Hank and the Shadows were my first ever favourite band in the 60's. The guitar sound was totally unique and set me on my path of musical discovery. The Beatles then effectively opened up my musical universe.

working them out from this video.. get's these delay times, if you want to make up your own accurate Hank Marvin delay patches.. be sure to play on the bridge pickup, and pick close to the neck. use lots of clean gain, and pick very very gently. I see people adding reverb and stacks of feedback to their settings, which is simply not the case. As Hank explains in this clip he used a Meazzi tape echo on those early hits. Meazzi was an Italian manufacturer, as was Binson, but they came from different factories. I guess it's like Bruce Welch stated: "There are now people who know more about the Shadows than Hank and me........"
After watching this i bought an echo pedal to use with my strat, Wounderful land and apache sound great now. The echo certainly give the music a dimension. I have listened to the shadows since i was four at 36 it is great to learn to play the shadows tracks.
The first echo I can emulate ( almost ) with 2 delay pedals but the second one.....( nonono)but it's a fun game to be fooling around with poor man's equipment and trying to emulate the sound of this great master ! Thanks Mr Marvin for those tips...
For the 2nd echo, you need 4 delays. (That how I set it up.) 1st delay: 100 ms. FB. 25%. Level, 20% find the sweet spot.) 2nd delay: 200 ms. FB. 20%. Level. 20-30% (find the sweet spot 3rd delay: 280 ms. FB. 40% level. 30%. (Find sweet spot) 4th delay: 360 ms. FB 45%. Level. 40% (find sweet spot). You probably can ignore the 2nd delay and just turn up the FB on the 1st delay to about 60%. Hope this helps :)

i have an epiphone Wildkat electric that has a bigsby vibrato. i can thank hank marvin for getting me to work with my bigsby and man a lot of things opened up on the guitar
Really enjoyed this one and it was nice to hear Hank talking about how the classic tones like Apache were created. Was also interesting to hear about the software for the Q2 which is the EFTP programme created by Charlie Hall which I use on my Zoom G2.1Nu pedal. It is really great to use and you get such wonderful tone every time without having to muck about trying to set the delay times for seperate tunes which can be frustrating.
@enzo2enzo2enzo Do you suppose it helped David Gilmour that he had a model, such as Hank Marvin? I don't mean to denigrate David Gilmour at all. He's absolutely one of my favorites. But it's a lot easier to follow someone else's example, even if you're "perfecting" a particular sound.
I never knew that Hank ended up in the States? I wonder how long he has been here? Seems to have picked up quite a bit of the accent. I have been here 30 years, but as far as I know my accent hasn't changed and that's even being married an American girl!
@isitrealgood hank mite have been before David Gilmour, but it does NOT mean he matches his skill with echoing or extending a note to heights with such a fluid gentle touch... Hank was a pioneer, Gilmour PERFECTED it! end of story
To my knowledge, Hank doesn't live in the States! Nobody know him here. And yes, Hank made mistakes and still make some today. It's normal. Listen to the apache's gallop on stage and you will hear he missed the beginning of the gallop.

Hank's tone is probably one of the greatest sounds ever from a Strat

It depends on what kind of tone you like. People are different, you know…

He doesn't make a mistake, because 40 years ago you couldn't afford to make a mistake. Tape was very expensive.

Hank let down Charlie Hall and his EFTP for a TVS3 and a JMI .He also use new Kinman pick ups and soon, he will use the Apache VSEE.

Gilmour admits his influence totally. Check the recent BBC doc about The Shadows. Also Pete Towshend and Brian May appear.

Hank used a binson on the shadows early recordings, didn't sound anything like what he is demonstrating.
In the mid to late 60s he used it. In the late 50s to mid 60s he used a meazzi echomatic
