I wish I'd watched this earlier. You are such a good teacher, you probably could have helped me learn Cakewalk basics. For some reason I've had a lot of trouble learning the basic editing functions and most of the instructional vids I've seen focus on more sophisticated aspects of the program. It's esp. frustrating for me as I used to teach college workshops in analog recording engineering and feel like the digital stuff is like learning an alien language.
Ken can I just say that this is one of the most in depth yet simply explained tutorials I have ever seen regarding "that" sound ....thank you sooooooo much. keep up the good work pleaseeeeeeee
Fender stopped supporting fender fuse, based off this tutorial I downloaded the free version of Guitar Rig. Thank you. this has become a viable alternative to Fender fuse, my set up isn't exactly the same as yours but does give me the Apache sound. Sidenote: my new PC would not work with this program It just gives a basic amp with no effects. My 12 year old mac desktop works 100% with the program and tutorial.
Hi Dave, Guitar Rig in my humble opinion G.R Pro is the best guitar app on the market right now...you can get so many different tones from it and it's very easy to use. Glad to hear you got it working and that you enjoy it. It's interesting to know that it doesn't work on your new PC, I wonder if Native Instruments have done something recently to alter it's functionality on Windows 10...I'm assuming that's your operating system? This is very well explained. If I might add a tip, that I found out during my years of trial and error: You should place the delays and reverbs before the amp. I know, unconventional, but back in the day, they didn't have effect-loops so that is how they did it. It adds a bit more spank to your tone, and makes the sound more unpredictable :)
This is amazing and beautiful ☺ I am playing an acoustic, and rather cheap, guitar (Yamaha F310) in which I have installed a pickup and changed the strings with Ernie Ball Everlast Light coated acoustic strings. I have followed your video instructions to the point and it sounds just fantastic. So you can easily say that the type of guitar does not really matter, as long as long as it have a good and clear sound. Another thing is that you have the ability to make an instruction that is easy to follow without you have to be familiar with all the music nerd expressions and words. That is so good, and that it is also very seldom. Thanks Ken - it is not the last time I have used your channel to make fantastic guitar sounds ☺

I am , a few years ago I was very lucky to be able to buy from the states a brand new still sealed in it box Zoom 508 which has all of the shadows ( Hank Marvin ) sounds for you to chose. when I plug my strat and amp for once I feel as if I know what I am doing he'll that's makes a change , no really it is a really great bit of kit . Great video. My "magic box" for Shadows lead guitar sound is the El Capistan by Strymon pedal. It allows me, among many other settings, to reproduce the intro to "Atlantis". No unit I ever owned was able to do that - and I've been playing Shadows tunes for over 40 years. At $300 it's not cheap, but absolutely worth it. I also own the Blue Sky reverb pedal by Strymon (same price), but more for vocals. It comes very close to an expensive studio reverb.
I've heard many good things about the Strymon pedals but haven't ever tried them myself, I'd seen some demos on TH-cam and thought they sounded great. Thanks for watching! Ken :-)
It sounds well but Hank uses a meazzi echo box and the sound is not the same, in my opinion to get more accurate efect you would need something less digital, i believe that the more analog the best sound you get, the diference between tape echo and digital delay are enormus! Digital delays repeats almost indentical the first note produced, tape echo produces a different space sensation that gives you the most Hank's original effect. I bougth a Behringer echo machine that gives you more acurate Shadows sound, just put the "Multi Tap 1" and adjust repeat almost in zero and Mode at 12 o' clock and turn the Time until you get it and that's it!! Shadows sound without any computer and software. Good luck.
At home between gigs I use an old zoom G1X pedal, with careful editing delays together with reverbs can produce satisfying sounds, saves useing the Volante, I bought the old zoom from a cash converters shop for £5.00 including power supply, wow ! The trouble with zoom effects units is that they are far too clean but add a touch of compression and you can session away at home for ever ! You need to play through a valve amp as hank has always done on stage for the creamy clean sound that only valve amps produce. Strymon Volante is a great echo unit to use but it's a lot of money but the gigs pay for it in no time. Best wishes 🙂
Thanks for helping me get closer to the Hank Marvin sound. I used a Vox amp with delay and an echo pedal. Don't waste your time replying to people who say that you only need a Vox amp!

Very clever, but, maybe it's me - turning a knob /flicking a switch seems easier......also, I think I much prefer analogue to digital with, of course, a good valve (tube) amp. Each to their own I suppose !
Hi Dave, yes digital isn't everyone's cup of tea. The benefits are that you don't need tons of power supplies and cables everywhere, it's easier to transport all on a laptop, and (depending on analog equipment) it doesn't generate heat making your studio too hot in the summer months. Personally I like both, but find that analogue can be quite noisy compared to digital, but analog naturally has more warmth to it. Thanks for watching! :-)

Good, but complicated. I played Shadows tunes since high school (I'm 75 now) and after about 50 years trying every echo thing that came out, I finally found the holy grail: the Strymon El Capistan.
WOW KEN - i sort of stumbled on your guide to computer generated sound possibliities as part of learning your SLEEPWALK version. It is mind blowing what digital can do today and your clear (as ever) and - as I have said before about your Tube - truly inspirational. You are a beacon of talent in a sea of wannabee mediocrity when it comes to passing on musical knowledge and skills, especially to the non-gifted but enthusiastic amateur like me. I met Bruce from the Shadows and he said Hank used 2 foreign delays that are no longer about!...but, a Roland RE-20 SPACE ECHO can get well close!...and a BEHRINGER Echo Machine EM600 can get near and a lot cheaper!!!....ava'guden ..
my Amp has a chorus and Reverb so it seems to sound like Hank I need pedals too! Wow Just learning Guitar at 68 so I have a long way to go. Hi Dennis, the only difference between the 2i2 and the 2i4 is that the 2i4 has MIDI input/output for recording keyboards and other MIDI instruments. If you are using only audio inputs i.e guitar, vocals or both then the 2i2 will work just fine!
Hi Ken, I've recently discovered your Shadows tutorials and covers ... absolutely brilliant, (I've also subscribed), I'm an 'oldie player I'm my 70's, resurrecting my interest, so dusted off my USA Strat Plus and bought a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Generation interface, comes with a free (light) subscription to Avid Pro-Tools, but would give Guitar Rig a try after seeing your tutorials. On question I have is with all the plethora of string manufacturers and gauges , 3rd wounds ( or not), there are many opinions by forum entries, and appreciate it's a bit of a personal preference, but just wondered what you are using mainly, I've heard (but not been able to confirm it) that Hank Marvin changes strings and gauges for various recordings ... as well as different guitars/setups etc., please keep the tutorials and covers coming, they are thoroughly enjoyable... regards, Roy
Hello Roy! My personal choice of strings are D'addario 11- 49's, they do the job just fine for me and the music I play. It is true that Hank uses different string gauges and guitars for various tunes he plays though. Thicker strings mean more sustain and a better tone but they become harder to bend and play on. The thinner strings sustain less and produce a weaker tone. Different guitars also produce different sounds due to the way they resonate and the type of pick-ups they have installed. I like my Stratocaster's for most of the music I play and my Telecaster for country. String gauge, type of pick-up, amp, or pick are just a matter of choice really...I would advise experimenting and find what works for you and stick to it. Hi Jim, thanks for your kind message! Getting into the electric side of things is great fun but can be a challenge to find the sounds that you want. There are so many different options and types of effects and amps. The best thing to do is go to your nearest big guitar store and have a look around. Most stores will allow you to try their products and will be able to give you some good info as many of the sales staff in these places are musicians themselves, and are more than happy to talk guitars and effects all day long! Hi Ken, regards from the UK, as most Hank fans I have been messing about for years trying to get "That Sound" using various delay pedals and amp settings. My software is LogicX and I have never been able to replicate that multi tap delay needed but after watching your video using Two delays I may be able to get somewhere near thanks to you. The sound he uses for his later stuff in the 90's is even more difficult to re-create, but I will be showing how to get that soon and hopefully making it easy to do. You don't need the Traktor's reverb Jim, the patches on my website don't use it anymore. When I realised people were having to spend more money for it I used the other reverbs that come with Guitar Rig which are just as good. :-)

Hi Kenneth, did you buy your version from Native Instruments or is it the demo? I recently helped somebody install their Guitar Rig and the process is a little complicated with the registration. If I remember correctly there is a piece of software you need to download from their site which connects to Guitar Rig and authenticates it. please help. i have been playing the shadows on and off since i was 12 i am now 50. i have not played a guitar for the last 12 or so years. i came across your videos by mistake and i must say, you are probably the best i have ever seen. and i have seen many. i would like to play again so i purchased a cheap fender strat and guitar rig 5. but will i be able to use a Behringer UMC22 U-PHORIA Audio Interface, and also what kind of speakers do i need. thank you.

Hi Alan, you don't necessarily need Traktor's 12 reverb, it's nice to have but the other reverb effects within Guitar Rig will do a great job also. The 'Studio Verb' and the 'Vintage Verb' work pretty good! :-)

You dont need an echo unit to get a Shadows sound. Take cliffs second album "Cliff Sings" there is no echo on it at all. It i all reverb & all the better for it. It is the first album to use Fender guitars as well a great contributor to the sound obviously.... Roy.
By no means am I a great guitarist, but I agree, many players go overboard on the echo, but plenty of reverb and a single delay sounds more accurate to my ears in most cases. I use the Keeley Abbey Chamber Verb, very nice pedal indeed.
Hi Ken! Thanks for the demo! I love your setup! I have been playing Shadow music since the beginning and am a total freak about, not just the playing, that's another subject altogether, but the exact sound! I can see you have the echo timing down to a tee That's really important and it makes the exact Hank sound! I do just that and just raise the echo volume level just under the guitar level And this is all you need to play perfect Hank sound! I may be the fly in the ointment here but I felt you had it mega perfect in every way, your sounds, settings and thorough explanations, until you added reverb! For me I really felt that everything you had was lost with the reverb! I may very well be very wrong and am now going to put on my tin hat!!! Cheers CC I must say, I totally love your recording setup! I could never afford the equipment they have today and had to make do with the cheapest Cu base setup I could afford with the other components needed to make it work! However I had to just make do! So congrats, Its really a dream studio!!!
Hi Charles, Thanks for your kind message, I welcome your constructive feedback. You may well be right regarding the reverb! I do like it thick and tend to put a lot sometimes. It's the sustain I am going for when I use it, I love those notes to ring out for a long time. Since I got the Kinman Hank Marvin pickups I must admit I use a little less reverb now as they sustain way more than the classic factory issue pickups. @@kenmercermusic I have many recordings I've don in my studio and live and i'd say 95% were done with three different delays and nothing live with reverb! Hank played only a handful of his tunes in the studio with no echo at all but with a very low inaudible reverb just to add a little life into it, like Dean's Theme, Bossa Roo, The Windjammer and more! His faster tunes he always used that echo you had there but a lot shorter, there but not above the notes he played! echo Because I played live, all my faster tunes used this echo to save me setting after every tune! For the slower tunes like Sleepwalk, Cosy, etc, I used an echo in the beat of the note you're paying like half a second apart and only two or three repeats and the volume of the echo just below the note I'm playing! This is my preference and like I said I'm in no way trying to influence you're style in any way! Ken this was a nice step by step process showing the use of Guitar Rig also. I have downloaded that software but have never set it up yet. I do all of my videos open-mic doing a similar process on my Mustang 3 modeling amplifier at this time. I want to Dabble with software like this. I see my buddy Phil appreciated this video also and he is a Shadows aficionado so that's a green flag as well. the other thing is the interface components between the guitar and the computer. There are so many kinds and they are also explained poorly in most advertisement unless you are already quite familiar and a tech-geek with that type of equipment.

I'm new at plugins. Can you tell me how you chain the reverb and delay plugins? Is it one serial chain or maybe the delay plugins in parallel with reverb in series? I'm betting the arrangement has some impact upon the final effect.
I normally select the Amp, Compressor, EQ, Delays, then lastly reverb one serial chain. After recording any audio track I usually go through a mastering process too. I hope this helps you. :-)

Hi Gary, if I understand your problem correctly your guitar when recorded sounds lost in the backing track? When recording a backing track or any piece of music there are some very important stages that occur. The individual instruments are recorded, then various EQ's, compressors and other effects are often added. Each instrument has it's own frequency range or space. The frequency of a particular instrument can often use part of the same range as something else and for this reason we often use Eq cuts or boosts to isolate or emphasise a particular range in the mix. Then comes the mixing and mastering stage which basically makes the music fatter and stand out more. When you are trying to add a recorded guitar to an already mastered backing track it can often sound a little odd or out of place...like it is not a part of it and it stands out. This is where you need to experiment with EQ and find the right blend to make it sit better. Reverb is another complex subject when it comes to mixing. You will also need to finely tune your reverb to not lose your presence in the mix. If the reverb is dry your guitar will be very up front and present. If it is too wet it will become thin and lost in the mix. This is just a case of trial and error, but you will understand it better with experience. Hi Ken are the delays in parallel or one into the other .Like delay 1 into 2 or visa versa.Also is the reverb in parallel with t the delay ? or after it?
Hi Stephen, I usually mix my guitar sounds in series (one into the other) with Guitar Rig. I always put delays first then reverb last. I like that wetness in the signal, it gives it a washy kind of tone that works for me. Do experiment though as you might prefer the sound in another way. All the best, Ken :-)
Hi Ken, I have been away from my guitars for some years and your TH-cam site got them back out. I was especially intrigued by your video on audio interfaces that I bought a Gen 3 Focusrite 2i2 and Native Instruments Guitar Rig 6 Pro. The sad part is I can't get the output to work. I believe the Focusrite is work but all I get through my speaker is what my guitar puts out. It's like what my Strat puts out passed through the Guitar Rig but doesn't change anything. The software sees my guitar, I see the ribbon registers go up and down. Please help. Bob
Hi Bob, your issue is simple I think. Please try one of these things: 1. Go to 'FILE' on top left side and select 'AUDIO & MIDI SETTINGS'. - then use dropdown menu to select your Focusrite interface and click 'OK'. 2. On the top center of Guitar Rig verify that 'L' (LEFT) and 'R' Right are clicked and highlighted - (where you see the INPUT/OUTPUT levels - they must be lit in order to make the sound work. 3. On the Focusrite front panel verify that the Master Volume and the input level (where you plug your guitar) are both up to a good level. 4. If all the above fails you might not have installed the Focusrite driver correctly or check guitar cables etc. Let me know if I can do anything else to help you. Kind regards, Ken

Yes you can connect analogue pedals at any point during the chain but with software like Guitar Rig I personally don't see the need for doing this as it already has everything a guitarist could possibly need. I always encourage experimentation though, sometimes you can find your unique sound this way. :)

Hi Jim, did you consider the 2i2 instead of the 2i4? It would be perfect if you are only using a mic or a guitar. The 2i4 has MIDI ports on the back which is only useful if you record with MIDI instruments. Anyhow both would be fine and any generation will work. Hi Hendrie, as far as I'm aware Guitar Rig works on both Windows 7 and 10 as I have used them on both myself and for some of my clients. The free version is made as a trial so you get an idea of how it works. It's not really a version made to use and enjoy too much. Hi Peter, It's very difficult to say not being there and seeing/hearing your set-up in person and the issue could be a number of things. I personally have no experience using the Ross Hall sounds or the Zoom G3 so I can't offer my advice on those unfortunately. What I can offer you is a one to one Skype call where I can discuss with you in more detail about the exact sound you are currently getting, look at and listen to your set-up, and offer you possible ways to improve it either with what you have, or with some other method. Hello Dave, that Cakewalk UA25EX Sound Card served me well over the last 7 years or so, I couldn't pick fault with it. It installs nice and easy and never gave me any trouble at all. My new Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is great and the difference is very noticeable, the pre-amps are very clear and plugging a condenser mic in to it is just something else. I would highly recommend it. The only issues I have had is with my PC not being able to power it sufficiently. I get some small popping sounds in my left speaker and sometimes latency can become an issue. Focusrite support were really helpful and connected up with me to help solve the problem, but the conclusion was that I need to alter the power options on my motherboard inside the BIOS page which unfortunately my PC can't do. I can still use it and it works really well most of the time, I will have to invest in a new PC at some point to get the full potential from it. I'm happy enough (at my age), to still be interested in using my PC for music, which I love doing...but can find it tiring and sometimes stressful, so i limit myself to what I do. Hi Nick, there are many good audio interfaces on the market that would work well for Guitar Rig, here is a link to some of the best ones of 2020: consordini.com/best-audio-interfaces/ Guitar Rig according to Native Instruments will not work on iPads. "Guitar Rig requires a Mac with OS X 10.10 (or higher) or a Windows Computer with Windows 7 (or higher). It is not compatible with iOS devices." I highly recommend Guitar Rig still as it still stands as the best guitar effects software to date. If the 2i2 is out of stock the 2i4 would work also but it has more features making the price a little bit higher. If you need help getting a PC set-up to use Guitar Rig I offer a remote connection service where I can do all the configurations for you and make sure everything is running correctly. Hi Alan, the best way to record guitar rig is by using it as a plugin within a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) i.e Sonar, Cubase, Pro tools etc. If you really want to output from your audio interface to an amp you could do it with a cable from the headphone output to the amp input although I wouldn't recommend this. Hi Roger, the settings in the software can be saved into presets so you can easily access a particular sound at the click of a button. As far as price goes, you can get an audio interface for as little as $40, maybe even for less on the used market. You will need a relatively good computer to run the software, the software itself (Native Instruments Guitar Rig) comes at a hefty price but well worth the money for what can be done with it.
So...do you use this in live gigs, too? I am feeling ready to do an open mic performance at my buddy's pub and he tells me they have mics, amps, and speakers there, already. I know I won't be able to get the tone and effects from his stuff because he usually hosts Country and Western Bands. I will probably use my own pedals and amp but it seems like this would be easier to haul around if it was loaded on a laptop. What do you do for your gigs...do you take your own amps and pedals or do you bring in your DAW and interface?
Hello Bill, I don't use this set-up for live gigs simply because I don't have a laptop capable of running it. At the moment my current gig laptop is used to play backing tracks through an external audio interface. I did try a couple of times to install Guitar Rig 5 on it but it doesn't have the processing power or the memory required. I'm sure would work great on a good laptop however and you could just plug straight in to any PA system with it. I play guitar through it on my studio desktop PC in real time without sound glitches or latency and also run backing tracks simultaneously. It works really well. When I gig I use the LINE 6 POD XT Live, you can see it on the thumbnail of this video. I plug my guitar in to it and a line out goes straight to my mixer which feeds off to the PA. I may at some point do a video of my live set-up too. I wish I could convert everything to a laptop for live gigging, it would save my back with all the heavy lifting. It's the wrong shade of red!!! ;) Enjoyed the video, not how I'd do it, but that's what everyone on youtube says, right? Try it with three delays - 123/430/600 ms with zero feedback on the first two and the feedback on the third. It's been a while, I forget the exact numbers, and don't go so heavy on the reverb... then again... you can go insane if you get too into the details. I love the CAR/Pearl combination - better than fiesta red IMO. Cheers

A 'live' sound is always a compromise, anyway - if you use software, you'll always be limited by 'acceptable' latency. In a recording situation, it's really easy, and doesn't have to involve expensive software - the only third party VST I used is an amp sim, everything else comes with my DAW, but the particular method I used relies on being able to record a DI track and then pile on an insane number of plugins. The guitar side is relatively lightweight and translates easily to most multi-fx boxes, but the 'post-production' stuff...
A question: do you gig and jam with friends, or just record for yourself? I'd be interested in that equipment if you can replicate Hanks sound. Thanks!

Your Explaining and Demonstration is in general one of the best! It's some years old now, would you still say the same for now? I played Hank's ( the Shadows ) music for long time in live-bands, stopped then, and I'm going to restart now. Hi Horst, thanks for your kind message. This method of obtaining the sounds digitally is still valid. The only thing that changed is that 'Native Instruments' released version 6 of Guitar Rig. Hi, the principles I show in Guitar Rig apply to all other hardware or software set-ups. Just set the delays at the same timings as I show here with some compressor and reverb. It doesn't have to be Guitar Rig necessarily. I don't own Pro Tools either so I couldn't do a tutorial about that yet sorry. Glad you enjoyed my video, regards, Ken :-)

I wish I'd watched this earlier. You are such a good teacher, you probably could have helped me learn Cakewalk basics. For some reason I've had a lot of trouble learning the basic editing functions and most of the instructional vids I've seen focus on more sophisticated aspects of the program. It's esp. frustrating for me as I used to teach college workshops in analog recording engineering and feel like the digital stuff is like learning an alien language.

Fender stopped supporting fender fuse, based off this tutorial I downloaded the free version of Guitar Rig. Thank you. this has become a viable alternative to Fender fuse, my set up isn't exactly the same as yours but does give me the Apache sound. Sidenote: my new PC would not work with this program It just gives a basic amp with no effects. My 12 year old mac desktop works 100% with the program and tutorial.
Hi Dave, Guitar Rig in my humble opinion G.R Pro is the best guitar app on the market right now...you can get so many different tones from it and it's very easy to use. Glad to hear you got it working and that you enjoy it. It's interesting to know that it doesn't work on your new PC, I wonder if Native Instruments have done something recently to alter it's functionality on Windows 10...I'm assuming that's your operating system? This is very well explained. If I might add a tip, that I found out during my years of trial and error:
You should place the delays and reverbs before the amp. I know, unconventional, but back in the day, they didn't have effect-loops so that is how they did it.
It adds a bit more spank to your tone, and makes the sound more unpredictable :)

This is amazing and beautiful ☺ I am playing an acoustic, and rather cheap, guitar (Yamaha F310) in which I have installed a pickup and changed the strings with Ernie Ball Everlast Light coated acoustic strings. I have followed your video instructions to the point and it sounds just fantastic. So you can easily say that the type of guitar does not really matter, as long as long as it have a good and clear sound.
Another thing is that you have the ability to make an instruction that is easy to follow without you have to be familiar with all the music nerd expressions and words. That is so good, and that it is also very seldom.

Great video. My "magic box" for Shadows lead guitar sound is the El Capistan by Strymon pedal. It allows me, among many other settings, to reproduce the intro to "Atlantis". No unit I ever owned was able to do that - and I've been playing Shadows tunes for over 40 years. At $300 it's not cheap, but absolutely worth it. I also own the Blue Sky reverb pedal by Strymon (same price), but more for vocals. It comes very close to an expensive studio reverb.
I've heard many good things about the Strymon pedals but haven't ever tried them myself, I'd seen some demos on TH-cam and thought they sounded great. Thanks for watching! Ken :-)
It sounds well but Hank uses a meazzi echo box and the sound is not the same, in my opinion to get more accurate efect you would need something less digital, i believe that the more analog the best sound you get, the diference between tape echo and digital delay are enormus! Digital delays repeats almost indentical the first note produced, tape echo produces a different space sensation that gives you the most Hank's original effect. I bougth a Behringer echo machine that gives you more acurate Shadows sound, just put the "Multi Tap 1" and adjust repeat almost in zero and Mode at 12 o' clock and turn the Time until you get it and that's it!! Shadows sound without any computer and software. Good luck.
At home between gigs I use an old zoom G1X pedal, with careful editing delays together with reverbs can produce satisfying sounds, saves useing the Volante, I bought the old zoom from a cash converters shop for £5.00 including power supply, wow ! The trouble with zoom effects units is that they are far too clean but add a touch of compression and you can session away at home for ever ! You need to play through a valve amp as hank has always done on stage for the creamy clean sound that only valve amps produce. Strymon Volante is a great echo unit to use but it's a lot of money but the gigs pay for it in no time. Best wishes 🙂
Thanks for helping me get closer to the Hank Marvin sound. I used a Vox amp with delay and an echo pedal. Don't waste your time replying to people who say that you only need a Vox amp!

Very clever, but, maybe it's me - turning a knob /flicking a switch seems easier......also, I think I much prefer analogue to digital with, of course, a good valve (tube) amp. Each to their own I suppose !
Hi Dave, yes digital isn't everyone's cup of tea. The benefits are that you don't need tons of power supplies and cables everywhere, it's easier to transport all on a laptop, and (depending on analog equipment) it doesn't generate heat making your studio too hot in the summer months. Personally I like both, but find that analogue can be quite noisy compared to digital, but analog naturally has more warmth to it. Thanks for watching! :-)

Good, but complicated. I played Shadows tunes since high school (I'm 75 now) and after about 50 years trying every echo thing that came out, I finally found the holy grail: the Strymon El Capistan.
I never tried the Strymon El Capistan personally but I only ever heard good things about it. :)
Boss me 80 has some grea preset t patches for Shadows in their library as well. It's called Casting Shadows
Your voice mic is picking up the direct unamplified sound from your guitar., there is a very thin string sound ringing along with the DAW sound.

I met Bruce from the Shadows and he said Hank used 2 foreign delays that are no longer about!...but, a Roland RE-20 SPACE ECHO can get well close!...and a BEHRINGER Echo Machine EM600 can get near and a lot cheaper!!!....ava'guden

I use a space echo & a boss dd6 coupled together.. They give a great delay sound. I dont use reverb with them as this seems to deaden the effect.
my Amp has a chorus and Reverb so it seems to sound like Hank I need pedals too! Wow Just learning Guitar at 68 so I have a long way to go. The 2i4 costs $200 but they have a 2i2 that is cheaper will it work or do we require that 2i4?
Hi Dennis, the only difference between the 2i2 and the 2i4 is that the 2i4 has MIDI input/output for recording keyboards and other MIDI instruments. If you are using only audio inputs i.e guitar, vocals or both then the 2i2 will work just fine!

Hi Ken, I've recently discovered your Shadows tutorials and covers ... absolutely brilliant, (I've also subscribed), I'm an 'oldie player I'm my 70's, resurrecting my interest, so dusted off my USA Strat Plus and bought a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Generation interface, comes with a free (light) subscription to Avid Pro-Tools, but would give Guitar Rig a try after seeing your tutorials. On question I have is with all the plethora of string manufacturers and gauges , 3rd wounds ( or not), there are many opinions by forum entries, and appreciate it's a bit of a personal preference, but just wondered what you are using mainly, I've heard (but not been able to confirm it) that Hank Marvin changes strings and gauges for various recordings ... as well as different guitars/setups etc., please keep the tutorials and covers coming, they are thoroughly enjoyable... regards, Roy
Hello Roy! My personal choice of strings are D'addario 11- 49's, they do the job just fine for me and the music I play. It is true that Hank uses different string gauges and guitars for various tunes he plays though. Thicker strings mean more sustain and a better tone but they become harder to bend and play on. The thinner strings sustain less and produce a weaker tone. Different guitars also produce different sounds due to the way they resonate and the type of pick-ups they have installed. I like my Stratocaster's for most of the music I play and my Telecaster for country. String gauge, type of pick-up, amp, or pick are just a matter of choice really...I would advise experimenting and find what works for you and stick to it. Hi Jim, thanks for your kind message! Getting into the electric side of things is great fun but can be a challenge to find the sounds that you want. There are so many different options and types of effects and amps. The best thing to do is go to your nearest big guitar store and have a look around. Most stores will allow you to try their products and will be able to give you some good info as many of the sales staff in these places are musicians themselves, and are more than happy to talk guitars and effects all day long! Hi Ken, regards from the UK, as most Hank fans I have been messing about for years trying to get "That Sound" using various delay pedals and amp settings. My software is LogicX and I have never been able to replicate that multi tap delay needed but after watching your video using Two delays I may be able to get somewhere near thanks to you. Hi Keith, I'm happy to hear that you have found my video useful. Getting that Hank sound is difficult to do especially if you have only one delay. The sound he uses for his later stuff in the 90's is even more difficult to re-create, but I will be showing how to get that soon and hopefully making it easy to do. Its a pity you have purchase the Tracktor Reverb to get this sound. What other reverb will work ?
You don't need the Traktor's reverb Jim, the patches on my website don't use it anymore. When I realised people were having to spend more money for it I used the other reverbs that come with Guitar Rig which are just as good. :-)

Hi Kenneth, did you buy your version from Native Instruments or is it the demo? I recently helped somebody install their Guitar Rig and the process is a little complicated with the registration. If I remember correctly there is a piece of software you need to download from their site which connects to Guitar Rig and authenticates it. Hi Alan, you don't necessarily need Traktor's 12 reverb, it's nice to have but the other reverb effects within Guitar Rig will do a great job also. The 'Studio Verb' and the 'Vintage Verb' work pretty good! :-)

You dont need an echo unit to get a Shadows sound. Take cliffs second album "Cliff Sings" there is no echo on it at all. It i all reverb & all the better for it. It is the first album to use Fender guitars as well a great contributor to the sound obviously.... Roy.
By no means am I a great guitarist, but I agree, many players go overboard on the echo, but plenty of reverb and a single delay sounds more accurate to my ears in most cases. I use the Keeley Abbey Chamber Verb, very nice pedal indeed.

I have been playing Shadow music since the beginning and am a total freak about, not just the playing, that's another subject altogether, but the exact sound! I can see you have the echo timing down to a tee That's really important and it makes the exact Hank sound! I do just that and just raise the echo volume level just under the guitar level And this is all you need to play perfect Hank sound! I may be the fly in the ointment here but I felt you had it mega perfect in every way, your sounds, settings and thorough explanations, until you added reverb! For me I really felt that everything you had was lost with the reverb! I may very well be very wrong and am now going to put on my tin hat!!! Cheers CC
I must say, I totally love your recording setup! I could never afford the equipment they have today and had to make do with the cheapest Cu base setup I could afford with the other components needed to make it work! However I had to just make do! So congrats, Its really a dream studio!!!
Hi Charles, Thanks for your kind message, I welcome your constructive feedback. You may well be right regarding the reverb! I do like it thick and tend to put a lot sometimes. It's the sustain I am going for when I use it, I love those notes to ring out for a long time. Since I got the Kinman Hank Marvin pickups I must admit I use a little less reverb now as they sustain way more than the classic factory issue pickups. @@kenmercermusic I have many recordings I've don in my studio and live and i'd say 95% were done with three different delays and nothing live with reverb! Hank played only a handful of his tunes in the studio with no echo at all but with a very low inaudible reverb just to add a little life into it, like Dean's Theme, Bossa Roo, The Windjammer and more!
His faster tunes he always used that echo you had there but a lot shorter, there but not above the notes he played! echo
Because I played live, all my faster tunes used this echo to save me setting after every tune!
For the slower tunes like Sleepwalk, Cosy, etc, I used an echo in the beat of the note you're paying like half a second apart and only two or three repeats and the volume of the echo just below the note I'm playing!
This is my preference and like I said I'm in no way trying to influence you're style in any way!
Here are three tunes I did,
The first one, CHU-CHI, with a very low reverb

Ken this was a nice step by step process showing the use of Guitar Rig also. I have downloaded that software but have never set it up yet. I do all of my videos open-mic doing a similar process on my Mustang 3 modeling amplifier at this time. I want to Dabble with software like this. I see my buddy Phil appreciated this video also and he is a Shadows aficionado so that's a green flag as well. the other thing is the interface components between the guitar and the computer. There are so many kinds and they are also explained poorly in most advertisement unless you are already quite familiar and a tech-geek with that type of equipment.

I'm new at plugins. Can you tell me how you chain the reverb and delay plugins? Is it one serial chain or maybe the delay plugins in parallel with reverb in series? I'm betting the arrangement has some impact upon the final effect.
I normally select the Amp, Compressor, EQ, Delays, then lastly reverb one serial chain. After recording any audio track I usually go through a mastering process too. I hope this helps you. :-)

Hi Gary, if I understand your problem correctly your guitar when recorded sounds lost in the backing track? When recording a backing track or any piece of music there are some very important stages that occur. The individual instruments are recorded, then various EQ's, compressors and other effects are often added. Each instrument has it's own frequency range or space. The frequency of a particular instrument can often use part of the same range as something else and for this reason we often use Eq cuts or boosts to isolate or emphasise a particular range in the mix. Then comes the mixing and mastering stage which basically makes the music fatter and stand out more. When you are trying to add a recorded guitar to an already mastered backing track it can often sound a little odd or out of place...like it is not a part of it and it stands out. This is where you need to experiment with EQ and find the right blend to make it sit better. Reverb is another complex subject when it comes to mixing. You will also need to finely tune your reverb to not lose your presence in the mix. If the reverb is dry your guitar will be very up front and present. If it is too wet it will become thin and lost in the mix. This is just a case of trial and error, but you will understand it better with experience. Hi Stephen, I usually mix my guitar sounds in series (one into the other) with Guitar Rig. I always put delays first then reverb last. I like that wetness in the signal, it gives it a washy kind of tone that works for me. Do experiment though as you might prefer the sound in another way. All the best, Ken :-)

I have been away from my guitars for some years and your TH-cam site got them back out. I was especially intrigued by your video on audio interfaces that I bought a Gen 3 Focusrite 2i2 and Native Instruments Guitar Rig 6 Pro. The sad part is I can't get the output to work. I believe the Focusrite is work but all I get through my speaker is what my guitar puts out. It's like what my Strat puts out passed through the Guitar Rig but doesn't change anything. The software sees my guitar, I see the ribbon registers go up and down. Please help. Bob
Hi Bob, your issue is simple I think. Please try one of these things:
1. Go to 'FILE' on top left side and select 'AUDIO & MIDI SETTINGS'. - then use dropdown menu to select your Focusrite interface and click 'OK'.
2. On the top center of Guitar Rig verify that 'L' (LEFT) and 'R' Right are clicked and highlighted - (where you see the INPUT/OUTPUT levels - they must be lit in order to make the sound work.
3. On the Focusrite front panel verify that the Master Volume and the input level (where you plug your guitar) are both up to a good level.
4. If all the above fails you might not have installed the Focusrite driver correctly or check guitar cables etc.

Yes you can connect analogue pedals at any point during the chain but with software like Guitar Rig I personally don't see the need for doing this as it already has everything a guitarist could possibly need. I always encourage experimentation though, sometimes you can find your unique sound this way. :)

Hi Jim, did you consider the 2i2 instead of the 2i4? It would be perfect if you are only using a mic or a guitar. The 2i4 has MIDI ports on the back which is only useful if you record with MIDI instruments. Anyhow both would be fine and any generation will work. Hi Hendrie, as far as I'm aware Guitar Rig works on both Windows 7 and 10 as I have used them on both myself and for some of my clients. The free version is made as a trial so you get an idea of how it works. It's not really a version made to use and enjoy too much. I do recommend you buy the full version as you can do anything with is and if you really want nice sounds it won't disappoint. All the best. :-)

It's very difficult to say not being there and seeing/hearing your set-up in person and the issue could be a number of things. I personally have no experience using the Ross Hall sounds or the Zoom G3 so I can't offer my advice on those unfortunately. Hello Dave, that Cakewalk UA25EX Sound Card served me well over the last 7 years or so, I couldn't pick fault with it. It installs nice and easy and never gave me any trouble at all. My new Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is great and the difference is very noticeable, the pre-amps are very clear and plugging a condenser mic in to it is just something else. I would highly recommend it. The only issues I have had is with my PC not being able to power it sufficiently. I get some small popping sounds in my left speaker and sometimes latency can become an issue. Focusrite support were really helpful and connected up with me to help solve the problem, but the conclusion was that I need to alter the power options on my motherboard inside the BIOS page which unfortunately my PC can't do. I can still use it and it works really well most of the time, I will have to invest in a new PC at some point to get the full potential from it. Guitar Rig according to Native Instruments will not work on iPads. "Guitar Rig requires a Mac with OS X 10.10 (or higher) or a Windows Computer with Windows 7 (or higher). It is not compatible with iOS devices." I highly recommend Guitar Rig still as it still stands as the best guitar effects software to date. If the 2i2 is out of stock the 2i4 would work also but it has more features making the price a little bit higher. If you need help getting a PC set-up to use Guitar Rig I offer a remote connection service where I can do all the configurations for you and make sure everything is running correctly. the best way to record guitar rig is by using it as a plugin within a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) i.e Sonar, Cubase, Pro tools etc. If you really want to output from your audio interface to an amp you could do it with a cable from the headphone output to the amp input although I wouldn't recommend this. Hi Ken, never seen anything like your set up before, stunning, what is an approx cost of the unit and are you able to put the settings into a memory so you can replicate them quicker ?
Hi Roger, the settings in the software can be saved into presets so you can easily access a particular sound at the click of a button. As far as price goes, you can get an audio interface for as little as $40, maybe even for less on the used market. You will need a relatively good computer to run the software, the software itself (Native Instruments Guitar Rig) comes at a hefty price but well worth the money for what can be done with it.

So...do you use this in live gigs, too? I am feeling ready to do an open mic performance at my buddy's pub and he tells me they have mics, amps, and speakers there, already. I know I won't be able to get the tone and effects from his stuff because he usually hosts Country and Western Bands. I will probably use my own pedals and amp but it seems like this would be easier to haul around if it was loaded on a laptop. What do you do for your gigs...do you take your own amps and pedals or do you bring in your DAW and interface?
Hello Bill, I don't use this set-up for live gigs simply because I don't have a laptop capable of running it. At the moment my current gig laptop is used to play backing tracks through an external audio interface. I did try a couple of times to install Guitar Rig 5 on it but it doesn't have the processing power or the memory required. I'm sure would work great on a good laptop however and you could just plug straight in to any PA system with it. I play guitar through it on my studio desktop PC in real time without sound glitches or latency and also run backing tracks simultaneously. It works really well. When I gig I use the LINE 6 POD XT Live, you can see it on the thumbnail of this video. I plug my guitar in to it and a line out goes straight to my mixer which feeds off to the PA. I may at some point do a video of my live set-up too. I wish I could convert everything to a laptop for live gigging, it would save my back with all the heavy lifting. Enjoyed the video, not how I'd do it, but that's what everyone on youtube says, right? Try it with three delays - 123/430/600 ms with zero feedback on the first two and the feedback on the third. It's been a while, I forget the exact numbers, and don't go so heavy on the reverb... then again... you can go insane if you get too into the details.
I love the CAR/Pearl combination - better than fiesta red IMO.

I haven't tried with three delays, I might give it a go though. That's the beauty of electric guitar, so many possibilities out there. It's a learning process right to the very end. All the best, Ken :-)
A 'live' sound is always a compromise, anyway - if you use software, you'll always be limited by 'acceptable' latency.
In a recording situation, it's really easy, and doesn't have to involve expensive software - the only third party VST I used is an amp sim, everything else comes with my DAW, but the particular method I used relies on being able to record a DI track and then pile on an insane number of plugins. The guitar side is relatively lightweight and translates easily to most multi-fx boxes, but the 'post-production' stuff...

I was playing professionally up until March last year when Covid came about. Now I work in IT and music has taken a back seat. I play just for myself now evenings and weekends. I use Guitar Rig (Native Instruments) software to get my sounds. Kind regards, Ken :-)

I played Hank's ( the Shadows ) music for long time in live-bands, stopped then, and I'm going to restart now.

and a VOX VT-50 Amp plus a TC ELECTRONIC GAUSS TAPE ECHO - Hank names it in one of his Videos.

Hi Horst, thanks for your kind message. This method of obtaining the sounds digitally is still valid. The only thing that changed is that 'Native Instruments' released version 6 of Guitar Rig. Hi Ken, thanks for a great instruction video to get the Hank Marvin sound. I just received my Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. Unfortunately it is bundled with Protools software. can you please do a similar video using Protools for the benefit of those without the Guitar Rig 5 software. Thanks
Hi, the principles I show in Guitar Rig apply to all other hardware or software set-ups. Just set the delays at the same timings as I show here with some compressor and reverb. It doesn't have to be Guitar Rig necessarily. I don't own Pro Tools either so I couldn't do a tutorial about that yet sorry. Glad you enjoyed my video, regards, Ken :-)

Guitar pro is a different piece of software used for documenting guitar music that has nothing to do with guitar rig.
