We spent the day with the legendary Mavic Neutral Service on stage 10 of the 2018 Tour de France. Starting in Mavic's hometown of Annecy, Stage 10 took in the only gravel climb of this year's race. From the outset, then, it was going to be a busy day for our friends at Mavic.
So, what do Mavic do at races like the Tour de France? As you might know, the riders receive service - in case of a puncture or other mechanical - from their team car. But, with two team cars per team in the race and the chance of many mechanicals or punctures on any given day, sometimes the teams can't cover all of the issues that their riders face. This is where Mavic's Neutral Service steps in. Their iconic yellow cars and motorbikes are there when the pro peloton needs them the most. Whether it's a wheel change, a loose saddle or a full bike, Mavic have the peloton covered.
Each car carries wheels to suit any of the bikes in the race; a task which has doubtless become more complex with the advent of disc brakes, and, they have bikes, complete with dropper seatposts for the riders, too. Each Mavic car carries a range of bikes with all the clipless pedals that the riders might be using; Speedplay, Shimano and Look.

When I was watching Froome get a wheel change, never imagined that Si was sitting in the Mavic Car. Really great insight and perspective.

Indeed! GCN is finding its legs as a more serious, documentary-style, journalism outlet with matching production values. I mean, I love the goofy, low to medium budget web series feel with guys and gals goofing off and being delighted enthusiasts. I hope that is never lost. It's also nice to have this new growth of quality in addition to the DIY, jump in and see what happens attitude.

@@gcn Are riders restricted to getting any needed help only from their team cars and these Mavic Neutral Cars? Or can other team cars help a rider from another team? Maybe that would seem to be against the interests of that team, but it would also be the more decent thing to do. Races should be won based on riding skills, not on mechanical misfortune.

How cool that GCN was allowed this type access, and great footage, considering the constraints. I can imagine the stress on the mechanic to get that wheel change, (or bike change) quick & right, if not, your in doodoo & on camera for all the world to see.

I'd say the sign of a real pro. Too tense & stressed usually equals less flow, rhythm & poise, for a quick change, (a bit like Nascar pit crews). That car handles good, but doesn't look the easiest to get in & out,

Yesterday I had the privilege of a front row view of the Prudential RideLondon Race from the Mitchelton-Scott Pro Cycling team car. What a day, so exciting. Simons video captures that excitement. (Thanks Zwift and Elite Trainers). The cars take a real hammering, when the call goes out from the race radio for one of your team, hold onto your seat OMG. Passing out bidons, exchanging items of clothing, listening to the race radio and the feedback to and from the riders, excellent. Simon didn't mention, make sure your bladder is empty when you start, because there ain't no stopping and it will be very full by the end.
I always enjoy your feature videos more than the weekly shows these days. Good one A+
