I was just planning on doing all my fuel lines.. I was almost set on just doing steel braided rubber because I imagined PTFE was hard to work with. "Harder" maybe, but you made it look easy! There's no E85 north of the border.. but I think I might go PTFE after watching this because I could theoretically cross the border and be at an E85 station within 1.5 hours from home. Even if I never run E85, im sure the possibility exists that some future owner will appreciate it being E85 ready. (This is an inheritance scenario btw, pry the DSM from my cold dead hands)

@@Jafromobile Do you ever have an issue with AC ripple and/or RF noise on your audio or ECU ? I bought a couple of isolators for the system I'm installing soon, get rid of the ground loop hum. They usually have RCA terminals, but can be clipped & spliced. RF can wreak havoc on a tune, AFR, hall effect stuff. Years ago- friend's van would have a misfire on a bass note; knock sensor was picking up! LOL.

16:00 you need a trailer hitch vise on that table. Tom Lipton (youtube content creator from the machining world) made one for a bullet vise. Worth taking a look. Doesn't clutter the top of your work bench, and can be hidden under when you're not using it.
Upvote because I totally agree! But unfortunately the legs and casters on this table aren't strong enough to do what I do with bench vises. I set an engine block on it early in this video and needed to put the table on an alignment rack afterwards because she now pulls hard to the left. There's a bench vise 80 feet across the shop in Matt's space I could totally use, I was just being dramatic. :D Lazy. Didn't want to move the camera. I like having a rolling staging table. I learned a lesson. Didn't exceed the load rating on the casters, but the table legs... Might reinforce the legs where the casters attach at some point. Maybe a bench vise once that's sorted?

Damn I wish i had neighbors like that! Cool info about the fuel system and ideas on how to redo my recent fuel system change. I need one of those tubes, for E85, it's hard to find a grade enough rubber hose for that purpose and I can only imagine the amount of pressure to blow off that tube.
just an fyi. from nhra rule book and most tracks. you need to add hard lines Lines: All non-OEM fuel lines (including gauge and/or data recorder lines) must be metallic, steel braided, or NHRA-accepted “woven or woven-pushlock.” A maximum of 12 inches total (front to rear) of non-metallic or non-steel braided hose is permitted for connection purposes only; individual injector nozzle and motorcycle fuel lines are excluded.
The PTFE hose is both steel and nylon braided, so it actually qualifies. PTFE hose doesn't have the burst strength to handle 300 PSI without it. It would balloon and split. There isn't an inch of non-steel-braided hose on any part of this pressurized fuel system, and my fuel tank vent hoses fit the connection definition, plus they're stock. So this fuel system fits the NHRA rule book. ;) I'm also very happy to have this here, because everyone needs to know the rules!
just a heads up.. the ethanol sensor is not an innovate part.. they are reselling a plain jane gm ethanol sensor that can be bought anywhere. the harness is also avail at most auto parts stores as a pigtail harness.
Here's a thought: At WOT I wonder approximately how much fuel _is actually returning_ to the tank? You'd have to disconnect the return at the tank, stand the front up, and punch it for ~5 seconds to measure the residual the engine's not eating.
I've never had a problem with a -6AN feed and a 1/4" ID (-4 AN) return. I've always had good base fuel pressure with it. What I'm making room for is the fuel being returned at idle. When I'm not using the ol' gas pedal. I just installed a pump that moves 200lph more fuel than the old pump. It was just a Walbro 255 and I needed more for all the extra ethanol we'll need to move. 450lph is enough. Some big injectors are on the way for WOT... but the fuel return is at its maximum flow at idle, under vacuum. That's when the fuel pressure regulator is the least restricted. So it's not just the consumption of the injectors at WOT... it's also the sphincter in the regulator limiting fuel flow at WOT to raise the fuel pressure. Curious question... I'm sure there's an awful lot of math.
My GSX has that feature, too! Had to use tin snips to make clearance for the lines to let me remove it, but I love it when manufacturers are so thoughtful to the people who work on them. It's like that's a lost art now.
that example of a bare aluminum fitting is actually zinc coated steel. that is a JIC hydraulic fitting, not aluminum. That's not to say you're not wrong, aluminum isn't that bad though. There is decent rubber lines you can use with e85. Been using ethanol with ethanol rated rubber lines for about 5 years now without any issues. That's not to say i won't in the future but yeah. Best to do it with PTFE from the get go.
You are correct. I did have an anodized fuel filter that was drilled out, and drilled out because all of the -6AN fittings no matter who you buy them from are still 1/4" ID. If you use straight fittings, some people drill them out because you can increase the flow. Old-skool trick. Can't do it with angled fittings, but you get the idea... The freshly drilled non-anodized aluminum inside the fittings that were drilled did the exact same thing as the zinc coated steel I showed, but I failed to include that dang clip of the fuel filter over this one in the editing process. I was just trying to solve all the blurry footage issues. I went through the trouble of re-shooting it and still failed to include it. I went through extra effort to fail on that one.

It uses Viton o-rings on a delryn bushing. With the heavy gauge wires on one side, and the smaller gauge on the pump I'm unlikely to have any electrical heat. The line I ran can deliver more current than the pump is capable of drawing. The load being drawn by only one pump shouldn't heat it up much at all. But if I had 3 fuel pumps in here along with a fuel level sensor to power, it would certainly be a different story.

To check the quality before you start, make sure the little silver pin isn't jammed in place. That's the only thing to look out for. If it's got a little play in it, it's unlikely to cause you any problems. There's been reports of leaks, but any fitting whose little silver pin at the swivel moves freely should be good to use. A couple have showed up like that, not in either of my kits, but we have seen it, too. Dangit, I almost included a scene of that but this video was already so long...

This will be the easiest hp / tq goals in mind for your bulid. Also, thank you for the excellent explanation on why not to use aluminum / regular fuel lines with e 85. So, on a non return system like my cruze that uses a pulse system to feed the engine fuel I don't have a choice of a return line to install a content sensor but you can still get 70 to 80 psi from the tank & even with a 1.4 t engine they can make 340 to 400 hp on a stock system which is impressive I think on a engine that the cylinder in just about the size of a soda can or 16 ounce water bottle. E85 makes cooler flame front , and higher compression & timing tables can be used. But also your turbo should be cooler & make more boost more efficiently as well. I watched the last time & you were making a boost, and you hit 22 to 23 psi during a shift from 3 to 4th under load you may be stretching a connection & may want to look for a boost leak. (: never give up & love your shop ! Be safe.
Yeah man! Now I can just pull up to a different gas pump, hit a 60% mixture and pour the power on with my credit card in about 10 minutes. Plus e85 is $1 cheaper here at only like 5 gas stations in my whole city. Certainly the easiest. A 1.4t engine isn't going to burn more fuel than will flow through that sensor even if you hit 3 bar with it. So it would be totally fine on a deadhead fuel system. The thing that makes that car potent is the 10 speed transmission that keeps it at peak cylinder pressure, but I wonder how often you'd have to rebuild those clutch packs at 3 bar? Certainly has potential! It took a while for the DSM crowd to figure their auto transmissions out. I think if you had goals over 400 horsepower, an external regulator and return system would offer much greater potential and consistency because fuel temperature also matters. You don't want to boil fuel in the rail between drag passes.
On my gen 1 I have 6 speed manual transmission but at 400 hp you are only using 1 / 5 on the track and 6 for highway speeds. Zzp has a 1.4 t in a sonic pushing 576 hp. And they have broken many parts along the way including flywheel bolts. I would like 250 to 300 hp in a 3200 pound car that's my daily driver.

There are electric cars from the late 1800's that still work, and if the elite are allowed to still have and enjoy those horrid atrocities, then dangit, I will have my antique also! I will keep driving it so long as they're allowed! I'll keep making it compliant, and forever fighting for our rights to keep our antiques! Even if I have to make my own parts I will pass state inspection. I think that's the example that should be set. Take a car that was not meant to be preserved, and try to preserve it. Or use it far beyond its intended design. Either way, I promise I'll use it all the way up before it's finished. Happy New Year!

With 3M ceasing production with PTFE and other similar chemicals, do you have suggestions for e85 compatible materials that are more resilient than rubber, but aren't steel, teflon, or annodized aluminum?
I seriously doubt PTFE is going away as it's the base of PEX piping which is a household construction standard, and there's no shortage of this fuel hose in automotive today on either on parts store shelves or in people's race cars. It meets NHRA certification for all automotive fluids. Either they've sold the patent, or DuPont is filling the void? I don't know for certain, but if I wanted a solid permanent all-fuel-safe zero-maintenance replacement for it, I'd go with stainless steel. It's just so hard to work with the effort isn't worth it on anything but a high-dollar build. And this thing ain't. :P. But there'd be nothing wrong with using this steel braided PTFE hose on a high dollar build, either.
Jafro, just how much cheaper is the corn juice where you are? If memory serves, it has less energy density than gasoline - meaning something like 27% worse fuel economy. Is the E85 cheap enough to counter this increase in fuel usage? Or should one save their money and just use it when you really want that additional power boost?
Gas just shot up 30 cents yesterday, so it's always fluctuating, but it's about a dollar cheaper. You'll fill up more often, but the same Sheetz with the e85 pump has a drive thru that serves a chicken parmesan sandwich topped with 3 cheese sticks. Hits the spot! Add that sandwich and it works out to cost exactly the same in the end, you're just doing it more often. And yes, horsepower at the pump. Whenever it feels right.
Every single swivel fitting I installed on my original fuel system has sprung a leak and been replaced with straight fittings and hard elbows. Fingers crossed your Amazon swivels hold up…
Is that PTFE hose safe? I read that you need to use the conductive/grounded one with carbonized coating for fuel applications to remove risk of static buildup. Apparently moving fuel through a PTFE line can "charge" it with static?

I know. It sure is! That's exactly what it says. But you shouldn't make your whole fuel system out of it. It doesn't meet NHRA requirements which someone else was nice enough to post here. I hearted their comment so it would float. I wouldn't feel good about running a non-steel-braided hose on the underside of the car, and it will fail tech at the track if the officials see it. If you use it within the NHRA standards for connection, then you're fine.

Is the FRP bare aluminum? Hopefully this isn’t a weak link in the system. Maybe what appears to be bare aluminum is actually anodized. But I didn’t see you verify or explain that part.
No, it's finished, but the rail itself is bare aluminum. People complain about their plastic fuel rails, but that law is why it happened. Many car manufacturers continued using aluminum on fuel parts because they thought the fuel standard was for E10 gasoline which is very stable and not all that corrosive. They didn't know it would soon be e85. So you continued seeing aluminum OEM fuel parts after 1994 until cars started being sold with "FlexFuel" badges on the bumper. They learned their lessons by then. But yeah, aluminum fuel rail still... and I probably won't do anything about it until it's a problem.
I'm starting to understand what I'm doing but I'm actually not any sort of tuning authority. I think my record proves it. You need a shop with a dyno, and if it's AWD, not every dyno will do. The EFI guys who understand it all have a dyno because it's how they test their work. Matt has a FWD dyno.
Measuring the depth for the fuel pump? What happened to "position pump as low as it goes on the holder, barely snug zip ties, lower into tank and push down until top can be bolted down...then remove, push pump another 1/8 - 1/4" higher to avoid rubbing on the tank bottom, and tighten zip ties fully. Job done, and nary a tape measure in sight. 🤔 Edit: Damn, you did virtually exactly the same thing - only with a Jubilee Clamp instead of a zip tie. Once again I talk too soon...oops. 😁
Quick question is posible used Walbro 525 and the thank and other extra aem fuel pump 400 in-line same fuel system I mean using the same fuel line 🤔 thanks in advance
Sure. The AEM works like a booster and needs a feeder pump. Normally you'd have it on the same line anyway. The 525 is a lot larger of a feeder pump than most people use with it, but I don't see any reason why that would be a problem? I doubt the AEM causes any kind of flow restriction? That should move plenty of fuel. It will be loud, too.
So I need to ask - has anyone else used these chinese e85 kits? I don’t see an issue myself as pretty much all the hose and fittings come from either china or india even for industrial stuff, but anyone else got real world feedback from them?
I wouldn't be surprised. You'd be shocked how much Hyundai borrowed from other Japanese manufacturers to build their 1g Elantras. Basically the entire driveline.

just a heads up.. the ethanol sensor is not an innovate part.. they are reselling a plain jane gm ethanol sensor that can be bought anywhere. the harness is also avail at most auto parts stores as a pigtail harness.
I noticed fueltech does the same thing. GM sensor.

At WOT I wonder approximately how much fuel _is actually returning_ to the tank?
You'd have to disconnect the return at the tank, stand the front up, and punch it
for ~5 seconds to measure the residual the engine's not eating.
I've never had a problem with a -6AN feed and a 1/4" ID (-4 AN) return. I've always had good base fuel pressure with it. What I'm making room for is the fuel being returned at idle. When I'm not using the ol' gas pedal. I just installed a pump that moves 200lph more fuel than the old pump. It was just a Walbro 255 and I needed more for all the extra ethanol we'll need to move. 450lph is enough. Some big injectors are on the way for WOT... but the fuel return is at its maximum flow at idle, under vacuum. That's when the fuel pressure regulator is the least restricted. So it's not just the consumption of the injectors at WOT... it's also the sphincter in the regulator limiting fuel flow at WOT to raise the fuel pressure.
Curious question... I'm sure there's an awful lot of math.
About to do this with gates barricade line, fortunately the miata pump is a trap door... inches behind my drivers seat.
My GSX has that feature, too! Had to use tin snips to make clearance for the lines to let me remove it, but I love it when manufacturers are so thoughtful to the people who work on them. It's like that's a lost art now.

that example of a bare aluminum fitting is actually zinc coated steel. that is a JIC hydraulic fitting, not aluminum. That's not to say you're not wrong, aluminum isn't that bad though. There is decent rubber lines you can use with e85. Been using ethanol with ethanol rated rubber lines for about 5 years now without any issues. That's not to say i won't in the future but yeah. Best to do it with PTFE from the get go.
You are correct. I did have an anodized fuel filter that was drilled out, and drilled out because all of the -6AN fittings no matter who you buy them from are still 1/4" ID. If you use straight fittings, some people drill them out because you can increase the flow. Old-skool trick. Can't do it with angled fittings, but you get the idea... The freshly drilled non-anodized aluminum inside the fittings that were drilled did the exact same thing as the zinc coated steel I showed, but I failed to include that dang clip of the fuel filter over this one in the editing process. I was just trying to solve all the blurry footage issues. I went through the trouble of re-shooting it and still failed to include it. I went through extra effort to fail on that one.

It uses Viton o-rings on a delryn bushing. With the heavy gauge wires on one side, and the smaller gauge on the pump I'm unlikely to have any electrical heat. The line I ran can deliver more current than the pump is capable of drawing. The load being drawn by only one pump shouldn't heat it up much at all. But if I had 3 fuel pumps in here along with a fuel level sensor to power, it would certainly be a different story.
I pretty much did the exact same thing to my gst fuel pump module.

Always a good time when a new Jafro video drops! I’m interested to see how that brand of fuel line works out. So far I’ve only bought some of their fittings for a project we’re working on.
To check the quality before you start, make sure the little silver pin isn't jammed in place. That's the only thing to look out for. If it's got a little play in it, it's unlikely to cause you any problems. There's been reports of leaks, but any fitting whose little silver pin at the swivel moves freely should be good to use. A couple have showed up like that, not in either of my kits, but we have seen it, too. Dangit, I almost included a scene of that but this video was already so long...

So, on a non return system like my cruze that uses a pulse system to feed the engine fuel I don't have a choice of a return line to install a content sensor but you can still get 70 to 80 psi from the tank & even with a 1.4 t engine they can make 340 to 400 hp on a stock system which is impressive I think on a engine that the cylinder in just about the size of a soda can or 16 ounce water bottle.
E85 makes cooler flame front , and higher compression & timing tables can be used. But also your turbo should be cooler & make more boost more efficiently as well. I watched the last time & you were making a boost, and you hit 22 to 23 psi during a shift from 3 to 4th under load you may be stretching a connection & may want to look for a boost leak.

Yeah man! Now I can just pull up to a different gas pump, hit a 60% mixture and pour the power on with my credit card in about 10 minutes. Plus e85 is $1 cheaper here at only like 5 gas stations in my whole city. Certainly the easiest.
A 1.4t engine isn't going to burn more fuel than will flow through that sensor even if you hit 3 bar with it. So it would be totally fine on a deadhead fuel system. The thing that makes that car potent is the 10 speed transmission that keeps it at peak cylinder pressure, but I wonder how often you'd have to rebuild those clutch packs at 3 bar? Certainly has potential! It took a while for the DSM crowd to figure their auto transmissions out. I think if you had goals over 400 horsepower, an external regulator and return system would offer much greater potential and consistency because fuel temperature also matters. You don't want to boil fuel in the rail between drag passes.
On my gen 1 I have 6 speed manual transmission but at 400 hp you are only using 1 / 5 on the track and 6 for highway speeds. Zzp has a 1.4 t in a sonic pushing 576 hp. And they have broken many parts along the way including flywheel bolts. I would like 250 to 300 hp in a 3200 pound car that's my daily driver.

There's nothing i hate more than having to buy the same thing twice. You've bought 3 sets of fuel lines for this vehicle so far, and at any moment it could become un-roadworthy due to your state inspection. That would suck :/
There are electric cars from the late 1800's that still work, and if the elite are allowed to still have and enjoy those horrid atrocities, then dangit, I will have my antique also! I will keep driving it so long as they're allowed! I'll keep making it compliant, and forever fighting for our rights to keep our antiques! Even if I have to make my own parts I will pass state inspection. I think that's the example that should be set. Take a car that was not meant to be preserved, and try to preserve it. Or use it far beyond its intended design. Either way, I promise I'll use it all the way up before it's finished. Happy New Year!
Why not put the FPR at the back of the car so you can dead head the system at the rail? That way you only need to run a vacume line instead.

With 3M ceasing production with PTFE and other similar chemicals, do you have suggestions for e85 compatible materials that are more resilient than rubber, but aren't steel, teflon, or annodized aluminum?
I seriously doubt PTFE is going away as it's the base of PEX piping which is a household construction standard, and there's no shortage of this fuel hose in automotive today on either on parts store shelves or in people's race cars. It meets NHRA certification for all automotive fluids. Either they've sold the patent, or DuPont is filling the void? I don't know for certain, but if I wanted a solid permanent all-fuel-safe zero-maintenance replacement for it, I'd go with stainless steel. It's just so hard to work with the effort isn't worth it on anything but a high-dollar build. And this thing ain't. :P. But there'd be nothing wrong with using this steel braided PTFE hose on a high dollar build, either.

Jafro, just how much cheaper is the corn juice where you are? If memory serves, it has less energy density than gasoline - meaning something like 27% worse fuel economy. Is the E85 cheap enough to counter this increase in fuel usage? Or should one save their money and just use it when you really want that additional power boost?
Gas just shot up 30 cents yesterday, so it's always fluctuating, but it's about a dollar cheaper. You'll fill up more often, but the same Sheetz with the e85 pump has a drive thru that serves a chicken parmesan sandwich topped with 3 cheese sticks. Hits the spot! Add that sandwich and it works out to cost exactly the same in the end, you're just doing it more often. And yes, horsepower at the pump. Whenever it feels right.

Is that PTFE hose safe? I read that you need to use the conductive/grounded one with carbonized coating for fuel applications to remove risk of static buildup. Apparently moving fuel through a PTFE line can "charge" it with static?

I know. It sure is! That's exactly what it says. But you shouldn't make your whole fuel system out of it. It doesn't meet NHRA requirements which someone else was nice enough to post here. I hearted their comment so it would float. I wouldn't feel good about running a non-steel-braided hose on the underside of the car, and it will fail tech at the track if the officials see it. If you use it within the NHRA standards for connection, then you're fine.

Schroedinger's fuel pump? lol What is the tool you used after you pushed the ferrule on to seat it? Might want that before I start my fuel system.
The tool I used was included with the hose kit. If you want a universal one that works on all the different size hoses, look up the Aeroquip FBM3646.

Is the FRP bare aluminum? Hopefully this isn’t a weak link in the system. Maybe what appears to be bare aluminum is actually anodized. But I didn’t see you verify or explain that part.
No, it's finished, but the rail itself is bare aluminum. People complain about their plastic fuel rails, but that law is why it happened. Many car manufacturers continued using aluminum on fuel parts because they thought the fuel standard was for E10 gasoline which is very stable and not all that corrosive. They didn't know it would soon be e85. So you continued seeing aluminum OEM fuel parts after 1994 until cars started being sold with "FlexFuel" badges on the bumper. They learned their lessons by then. But yeah, aluminum fuel rail still... and I probably won't do anything about it until it's a problem.

I'm starting to understand what I'm doing but I'm actually not any sort of tuning authority. I think my record proves it. You need a shop with a dyno, and if it's AWD, not every dyno will do. The EFI guys who understand it all have a dyno because it's how they test their work. Matt has a FWD dyno.

Measuring the depth for the fuel pump? What happened to "position pump as low as it goes on the holder, barely snug zip ties, lower into tank and push down until top can be bolted down...then remove, push pump another 1/8 - 1/4" higher to avoid rubbing on the tank bottom, and tighten zip ties fully. Job done, and nary a tape measure in sight. 🤔
Edit: Damn, you did virtually exactly the same thing - only with a Jubilee Clamp instead of a zip tie. Once again I talk too soon...oops. 😁

Sure. The AEM works like a booster and needs a feeder pump. Normally you'd have it on the same line anyway. The 525 is a lot larger of a feeder pump than most people use with it, but I don't see any reason why that would be a problem? I doubt the AEM causes any kind of flow restriction? That should move plenty of fuel. It will be loud, too.
