Hagen Quartet - Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F - Assez vif, Très rythmé (2/4)

- The second movement of 28 year-old Ravel's Quatuor à Cordes. He is said to have been meticulous in his writing, and, finally, a group of musicians have matched his efforts in terms of attention. This is, in my opinion, the best performance and recording of this piece.
The second movement is possibly the most known, as audiences remember the pizzicato opening; its usage in media, such as for the film "The Royal Tenenbaums" (W. Anderson) and as trailer music for films such as "Be Kind Rewind" (M. Gondry) also furthers its memorability. Assez vif introduces two new melodies; a rhythmic melody and a contrasting "sung" melody, which is both graceful and heroic. It is as though these are character motifs.
Hagen Quartet:
First Violin - Lukas Hagen (Austria)
Second Violin - Rainer Schmidt (Germany)
Viola - Veronika Hagen (Austria)
'Cello - Clemens Hagen (Austria)
Concert hall - Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria. (2000.)

honestly this movement is one of the most unique, groundbreaking and exciting piece in Ravels time, and it sounds refreshing even today.
yessir
Indeed! The opening pizzicato passage, spirited fast theme, and harmonic richness of the slow theme are all incredibly refreshing.
That unique tone makes me want to hop to the kitchen quietly in the middle of the night in order to grab some snacks.
such a good thought
why is that tune in the beginning soooo catchy
The tune that starts at 1:03 ?
@@Scriabinfan593 I think they mean the one that starts at 0:00
It's amazing how just four intstramentalists can sound like a whole orchestra
That pizzicato beginning gets to me every time. I hear it in my head constantly . Just lovely.
The cellist just looks like an older version of the 1st violinist.
But really, lovely piece. It's the kind of thing that seems to keep you guessing till the end.
+Laura Shelton They're related.
+Laura Shelton The two of them almost look like Brad Pitt.
Good eyeball, she's his sister. The other guy is a brother (without the beard.)
All 4 are sibs, according to wikipedia
Hahahahaha
Every time I get a comment in my inbox, I end up listening to the complete movements. Holy fucking shit this music is beautiful. Thanks everybody!
Totally. There is certain music that I start up just because I know I like it- and then I just freeze in place and can't do anything but listen.... This is one of those. Other examples for me are Mark Kozelek and Phil Elverum's music.
Aaand there you go again, fren.
Started as my least favorite movement but now i can’t help but adore it
This entire piece is probably among my top 5 pieces of classical music
this song makes me want to go on an adventure. I'm not sure to where but I know that old sneakers and a backpack will be recquired

*song jeez please learn the difference between a song and a piece
My god, it sounds soo 'fresh', vivid, and new... Ravel was indeed a genius
Wow. I will never understand how a human brain can produce this.
it doesn't. it only channels it from higher planes of consciousness

Efficient connections of neurons to each other! But even then it’s amazing how a brain can produce it 🤧

The person playing viola is... Phenomenal. Being a viola player myself, this is inspirational... I'm kind of dreading the fact that I have to play this song, I'm principal of my section. Also a middle schooler... I guess I got to test my limits yeah? This song is definitely one of my favorites.
same😂😂
Its a piece* not a song! please don't embarrass yourself.
hey shut up
@antonioboe
Antonioboe oh shush
Tanenbuams turned me on many moons ago, but watching them shred us mesmerizing. Been trying to get my 7 and 9 year old to appreciate how magnificent this is. If you are reading this, you are magnificent too. Having a great ear for music is such a wonderful quality!
Magnifique; un blason pour la musique Francaise et un des meileurs quatuor de notre temps; super interpretation!
There is something so pleasing about the 0:30 melody
Agreed. Amid the swift urgency of the previous material and the accompaniment here, the melody that emerges is heroic, graceful, loving, but also sad and aching.
This had to be one of the main inspirations behind Michael Giacchino's Spider-Man theme for the MCU right? That playful, adventurous and spidery opening is almost directly lifted.
Could you include a link?
@@Walls2008 search up MCU spider-man theme. It's everything to 1 minute and 23 seconds
I adore this movement. I wish Ravel had written more for strings!
Was this written for the Royal Tenenbaums? I'm interested in hearing more of their songs if they are all whimsical and diverse in style like this one is.
Nicole Lannertone
Considering that Ravel died in the 1930s, I'd say not. Lol.
You might really enjoy "Bolero" by Ravel. Give it a try. It's amazing!
He also wrote gorgeous trio.
Hearing this piece brought me into another world..beautiful and enticing
Other worldly yes- Like all great music, but to me it evokes heart rending sadness and even sometimes the violent and cruel march of time.
I was introduced to classical music at age 6 by playing around with an old Bendix 78 record player in my grandmothers attic. This section of the quartet was all that survived unbroken. I was hooked forever on this music.
This is possibly one of the best musical sounds ever made, so moving and will always bring on a tear. Perfect when it was used for the soundtrack to the camomile lawn.
The Royal Tenenbaums got me here. Love this. I miss my boyhood days in San Diego when I had a lovely life and a loving spinster aunt who took me and my cousin to see the SD Symphony, and operas. My favorite was going to the old Starlight Opera in Balboa Park. Not sure why this made me think of those youth years?
Ravel is awesome. I just wish impressionism would have stayed a bit longer :/
right????
The war changed everyone, and old forms seemed hollow, artificially beautiful in a world that had been torn apart. But it led to to new thoughts, the influence of jazz, more direct inspiration from 3rd world sources, unabashed willingness to use the sounds of industry and clashing harmony. Still, I wish at least one more generation had had the opportunity to write this way. As a side note, few would consider this quartet to be strictly impressionist. It's a slippery term anyway, and Ravel didn't enjoy being bound by it
Yes-- when you listen to the quartet by Ravel and the quartet by Debussy- you are witnessing the birth of modern Harmony-- and rhythmic syncopation- a few decades later- these Innovations would take the World by storm-- especially modern Jazz Harmony in America-- even down to this day
It was ironically called 'Neo-Impressionism' at the time. I guess we can call the Nuvo composers Post Neo-Impressionists. I myself strive to compose in this style with a modern twist. But I suck at it lol. This is why I became a rock/pop musician.
1:03 is my new phone ringtoneeee I love it
I'm new to string quartets, but upon hearing this, Ravel's piece has become one of my favorite all time string quartets. Incredible, very inspirational and very well played!
From 2:07 the cellist just makes that hair, string and wooden chamber SING! I get goose bumps every time. :)
What a viola! Best viola playing of this part that I have heard.
Man, this is certainly the best movement
I literally can't breathe. This is simply amazing
I wish that was true. You’re annoying
the changes in dynamics throughout the movement are remarkable
Absolutely amazing. It sounds so contemporary to me, like it was composed yesterday.
This must be the coolest quartet piece ever written, and Hagen Quartet does a beautiful job. I come back here often.
I am actually in awe of this violist!
Love this song, it's lively and has some very beautiful melodies! It reminds me of traveling through Italy and France for some reason, I must of heard this song while I was there and subconsciously think of it now.
Exceptional interpretation! Those two brothers have no doubt performed and practiced together all their lives. This symbiosis makes all the difference in an ensemble...they know what each other is thinking as they think it...
Brilliant Ravel, brilliantly put over by the Quartet ~
cant help following the melody like if i were playing the music myself....really good music!! :)
This is such a lovely arrangement. I absolutely love it. I can't stop listening to it. My favourite part had to be the beginning.
Ravel was one of the Great Masters. No doubt about it.
Agree!
Royal Tenenbaum bought the house on Archer Avenue in the winter of his 35th year.
I love the music but the quality of the picture is phenomenal!!! (I was on a delayed train this morning getting frustrated when I heard a woman's cell phone ring with the pizzicato melody, the thought of the music carried me away and I immediately looked up youtube to see if there was a recording, I was not disappointed)
I just searched Ravel playlist and this is the first piece I'm hearing in it... I am literally awe-struck jaw dropped by the music and playing here! -o-
Fantastic quartet. This second movement is absolutely brilliant!
this is absolutely amazing.
what a fantastic performance!! i really do hope people in the future will appreciate this incredible piece more
I love the music, and I agree the clarity of the pictures is just amazing. We can see exactly what the musicians are doing.
best violist i have seen on this piece
Cada vez me enamoro más de la música de Ravel
It is sad that people found it from a movie and think they're any better than people who found it from a commercial when really, it doesn't matter where anyone found it, just that they heard something amazing that they want to hear again.
This is wonderful! The music and the muscians! Im speechless!
Astoundingly gorgeous!
This is my very favorite performance of this piece.
Whos watching this in 2020 😀
This song is beautiful 😵
Amazing grip on this piece. Nailed it❤️
Such beatiful chords and resolutions. A real genius in my opinion.
This is a a very nice performance by this quartet. Emerson quartet does justice to this movement as well. They both play it in the perfect tempo. I have heard others slow it down tempo and it annoys me when some quartets do that. It has to be in this tempo.
Very amazing! The best performance of this piece for me also.
Excellent rendition of this wonderful composition!
Such a wonderful and illuminating music.
Great Music, Excellent Performance!!!
How fucking cool, like seriously. These musicians are amazing.

So incredibly moving!!!
So great that it can give that impression 109 years after it was written.
Nine perfect strangers got me back to this!💌
I've heard the pizzicato melody on numerous ringtones as well.
Glad you were able to find this video!
I love the sound that 'plucking' makes c: it just sounds wonderful

Great Audio for TH-cam. You ARE the good general.
fantastic recording!
Super like! Awesome!!!
I love my favorite quartet!!
They are. The first violinist, violist, and 'cellist are siblings. It's in the description.
I love this!
Amazing!
YES finally found this after years!!! :)
How did Ravel make a theme for an adventure videogame way before video games were a thing?!
