    El desolado inicio del piano en medio del silencio del resto de la orquesta es como un lamento del alma llena de tristeza, hasta que ese lamento es consolado por las voces delicadas de los más dulces instrumentos, e incluso de toda la orquesta, que con extrema compasión acompañan esa infinita soledad y dolor, que también llega a clamar contra la tragedia de su absurdo e infeliz destino, finalmente aceptado con el diálogo íntimo y paciente con el otro, que hace nacer la serena aceptación que ha de culminar, frágil y límpida, en el silencio... La experiencia de la muerte de quien más se ha querido pueda estar, quizás, aquí retratado.

    J'ai découvert cet adagio récemment, et m'étonne encore qu'il ne soit pas plus connu - quel chef-d'oeuvre! À la fois moderne et classique. Une interprétation sublime pour une oeuvre de la plus haute inspiration. Comme dit quelqu'un plus bas - c'est 'toucher au ciel' que d'entendre cela. Je l'ai écouté cent fois, je ne m'en lasse pas. Beautiful performance by Helene Grimaud of course; no real surprise there given her clear affinity with this work and the deep sensitivity of her playing in general. An honorable mention must be given to the woodwind soloists as well, though, and especially the oboist who gave an absolutely exquisite performance here. Wonderful.

    • @ariellealvarez-pereyre4723
      @ariellealvarez-pereyre4723 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not an oboe, it's an English horn 😃 same family, but the English horn (cor anglais) is slightly different and used by composers for its dreamy sound

    • @simondurrant1
      @simondurrant1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ariellealvarez-pereyre4723 Indeed, you're absolutely right in that it's a cor anglais, but cor anglais players are normally referred to as oboists in recognition of the fact that they invariably play both, and oboe more frequently, hence the label used. :)

    • @ariellealvarez-pereyre4723
      @ariellealvarez-pereyre4723 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simondurrant1 I just think it's a shame of depriving the player of their rightful title when they're playing cor anglais, especially when it is a solo, since so few people actually know the instrument. Also, some cor anglais players make a career out of it and that is their title in the orchestra. Maybe she's not an oboist... :)

      Yes, often we violists too are identified as violinists, much to our chagrin, but viola is indeed essentially an alto violin and cor anglais / English horn an alto oboe 😀

    After the hauntingly beautiful opening piano solo, the first-time listener might wonder how Ravel could possibly improve on such perfection. Then they hear the recapitulation, with the melody spun out elegiacally on the cor anglais with the delicate filigree embellishments on the keyboard, culminating in the long final trill on the piano over gently sighing phrases on the strings and they go "Oh..."

      It's the clarinet's entrance that does it for me and the way she looks up with such longing in her eyes. Utterly sublime. I think I may have listened to this piece over a hundred times and have yet to grow tired of it

    I don't know what he intended but I get the sense that Ravel is expressing the essence of Aging, Compassionate Care and Death in this movement. The disjointed piano plods along like the elderly. The first time there is treble fibrillation, the accompaniment comes in like compassionate caregivers. Then there are happy flights of fantasy (Alzheimer's?) in the right hand of the pianist, like butterflies. Until it ends with the final fibrillation and peace.

    For me, this music is a journey to a magical realm or state of mind. The solo piano part is when you try to enter the realm, as if you are saying a password. Then, when the rest of the orchestra starts playing, you enter this magical world that you didn't know before. The world itself is made out of light and happiness but also out of sadness, sorrow and desperation. There are no humans in this world, it's only nature. It merely depicts the profound beauty of this nature on its own. Life comes and goes, it literally goes by; everything "just happens".

    Ni Beethoven, ni Rach ni Tchaikovsky tienen en su catálogo una melodía tan dulce y emotiva como este adagio. De los pocos momentos que hasta pueden sacarte una lagrima de la emoción.

    Such intense and sublime moments, Helene Grimaud is such an amazing performer and look at the beauty of their looks to each other, sentimental. I couldn't even imagine how one and only Ravel felt when writing this magnificent composition. When Classical Music and Jazz are together as in this incredible composition, the intensity of music captures all the emotions of humans can feel at one time. Music is our universal language and as great Oliver Sacks emphasized "One does not need to have any formal knowledge of music - nor, indeed, to be particularly "musical" - to enjoy music and to respond to it at the deepest levels. Music is part of being human, and there is no human culture in which it is not highly developed and esteemed." and "Music is part of being human". Let music conquer our lives friends. The life is more meaningful when you dedicate yourself to an art form. Peace.

    03:35 is one of the most romantic moments in music, but listen to the entire piece. Its beyond magical, but that particular moment you can see in their faces.
