Over the last few years I've really felt withdrawn from the sport and I really could t pin point why it was. But with the recent departure of Francis, it really put the nail in the coffin for me. This video really sums up what I've been feeling about a sport I've loved so much. The other org's are great to watch and all, but if the top one is treating its fighters this way, it's gone be really hard to stay connected with the sport in general if things don't change.
Same way I feel brother! Lately I've been thinking about turning into bellator more. I usually only watch bellator when they have those veteran superfights, or a tournament, or if some of the old UFC stars are fighting like gay garb mousasi or YOLO Romero. But lately it's been very hard to stay connected to the UFC and the past several months watching all of the politics they've tried to use to screw over some of that favorite fighters has been really disgusting if you ask me. All the way from the favoritism to giving certain fighters the corporate push and different passes on breaching the laws or rules and the way they've been doing people with the last fight on their contracts is just horrible. The fact that they have them locked in as employees but won't give them any of the employee benefitsis dang near like indentured servitude. I don't like how they tried to screw Nate on his last fight, although it also occurred to me that I wonder if they never planned on making Nate verse hams at and they only promoted it that way to cause a bunch of controversy and to get a lot of eyes on that card, but had all along planned on switching it up at the last minute. Cuz I don't think they would have been doing anything for their reputation to try to get the beloved and Nate Diaz smashed in his last fight. I wonder if people start tuning and lessor start voicing their opinions more on how they don't like the operation once it get past matchmaking, if they'll change. People really need to start taking a stand especially with the way Dana is now feeling so untouchable that even after smacking his wife he's going to come out and say well any punishment they give me wouldn't hurt me it would only hurt the organization in the fighters. To me that was beyond cocky and his God complex is gotten way out of hand. No one should feel THAT powerful!
Ankalaev vs Blajovich is a prime example of the control the promotion has on the competitive nature of the title and ranking system. Dana just didn’t like the fight so he said fuck the rankings were going to book a new fight and call that the “title fight.”
Even outside of manipulating the fight matchups directly through refusing or cancelling fights, the UFC will absolutely show blatant favouritism depending on where they smell profit, and will set fighters up for failure if Dana believes an individual will make a more marketable champion or ranked fighter. Look at the Oliveria vs Islam fight, they did literally everything they could to prep Islam for the win, promoted Charles as the underdog, booked the fight in Duba instead of Brazil, and regardless of the actual skill matchup (Charles still had glaring holes in his game that needed addressing), that almost certainly had an impact on the fight. Imagine being the champion, holding the title, and your promotion is already treating your opponent like they've won before you step foot in the ring. The fighters themselves have no say, nobody has any say, nobody but the management of the UFC. Why did they do this? Because Islam as champion gets the HUGE Khabib fanbase and increased market value in the Muslim community. Even if Islam himself has the charisma of a rock, he's got the potential to sell far more PPVs just by fighting once a year so he's the clear choice. Would it have changed the outcome? Potentially but that isn't the point. The SOP is to have the fight be fought on the champion's home turf, have the champion be marketed as such, and for the challenger to be, well, in the position Charles was. It was very strange to see it all play out, and was a demonstration of the lack of loyalty the UFC has to any fighter, even if they've made them significant bank in the past. Oliveria, Ngannou, DJ, and more have all suffered from this in different ways. If being champion doesn't help, nothing will. The UFC has full control over almost every aspect of the fights, they control the date, the location, the payout, the matchups themselves, the title qualification, and it's almost certain they have significant influence over the judging as well. It doesn't matter about ranking because even champions have been screwed over regarding matchmaking and promotion. Nothing matters but profit. It's as political and exploitative as Professional Boxing, if not worse, in many ways.
Many years back when UFC tried to get the legendary russian Fedor Emelianenko, the whole thing fell tru as Fedor Emelianenko stated that he will not sign such one sided contract and that the money was below bad. It hasnt changed much since.
Its only gotten worse because fighters have even less leverage today than they did back then. Back then the UFC was actively trying to get the best fighters into the promotion, today they couldn't give a toss as evidenced by the fact they let-go Francis Ngannou.
It seems your the only channel that are talking about these issues, the amount of fact, research and quality of these videos are amazing and you have seen the future. Hopefully.
As a lifelong MMA fan, from the Pride days to the first TUF, I hope that the fighters are able to get this pushed through in some way shape or form. These men and women are fighting at the highest level of competition there is, sacrificing their bodies and overall livelihoods for our entertainment. They deserve to have fair compensation and benefits that will support them to continue to do what we all love. This was one of the best videos this channel has put together, and definitely the most important.
I stopped following MMA a few years ago so I had no idea this topic was still an issue. I assumed things had improved. Imo the first Reebok/UFC deal completely ruined the sport, fighters are still facing the consequences of that.
This is gonna have a long term ripple effect on the sport as a whole. Between the James Krause scandal, the judging scandal, ex champions coming out about their pay schemes, the rising PPV prices etc. shits gonna change, let’s hope for the better.
Its fucking insane that I thought exactly about this topic today and you guys just dropped this video. I miss freak show fights and different formats like tournaments. The fighters are better than ever but at the cost of the wild fun entertainment of past days. Keep up the good work. You where my entrance to the world of mma and still are the best on youtube.
@Tommy Toe Hold - Full disclosure when you started with more of the 'web comics' and jokes I never foresaw your ability to handle topics like you have been handling with such depth, skill and objectivity. Truly a pleasure. Keep it up. And thank you.
Maybe that’s why Dana is promoting Slap League. UFC fighters are getting smart and so he needs to find some not so smart people to exploit. And given the fact that slap league literally will make you even dumber, it’s the perfect recipe. Dana is indeed a business genius.
He’s not a business genius. The whole reason the UFC is a success is because the Fertitas pumped so much money into it after Dana’s habitual failures. It also went mainstream because of the likes of Conor McGregor. He doesn’t do shit.
This is really excellent. I'm a relatively recent fan of MMA, and I just can't get over how poorly paid the fighters are, considering everything these guys put on the line, how hard they train, and how talented they are.
I think a big part of the problem is Dana takes care of the top guys and big names which keeps them from banding together or speaking out. Just look at recently Michael Chandler praised the UFC, Sean O'malley defended them, DC has talked about how they took care of him many times, there's been lots of other ones too. Most of the time the people that speak up are ones that essentially nobody is going to miss. Plus the bigger name guys that do say something usually just do it to get offers elsewhere since ONE and PFL will generally pay well for established names.
One of my favorite philosopher. But I find it funny how the vid was using his quotes in side with the fighters, when it can very much be used in side with the UFC. No one should deny that UFC is what made MMA big(ger). MMA never was a popular sport. Yet, some people treat it like its boxing (with all its flaws, history, foundation of it is massive) or even some popular sports like football, NBA. It's not so, so of course what some of these people propose would either fail or have not enough impact. Socialism only works when everything is luxurious, which MMA still is not. But I can agree with the vid that some good still will come out of this. Not what some people want them to be, but more transparency and whatnot (it can also hinder from MMA becoming bigger, going the path of boxing even at this stage).
I've only recently gotten into MMA in the past 5 or 6 years because of Khabib being Russian and myself being Russian and this whole time I thought it was extremely weird how much power the promotion has over the fighters. I'm primarily a hockey and basketball fan where the players have most of the power and see at least an equal split in profits with the owners. So it always kind of struck me as weird just how this way of running a sport is accepted as "just how it is" among the MMA fans I have talked to. Its cool to see that people are coming to realize just how much of a raw deal the fighters are getting in the biggest promotion in the world, let alone how bad it probably is in smaller promotions.
Is he not from Georgia ? Or is that in Russia ? Sorry for my mix up of a question. I'm from England and I love Russia mainly because of the people I love how you all are as human's I see an average Russian and I can relate to that person and our countries have a similar sense of humour so yeah I love you guys. Best wishes from England 🏴🇷🇺
No we are not. Jake has 20 million TH-cam subscribers. If only 5% of them bought the PPV then he has 1.000.000 buys . This is just his TH-cam audience, without including regular fight fans or the fans of the people that he boxes. When Charles fought against Chandler for the the title , they generated only 300.000 PPV. When the fighters will generate as much money as Jake, they will be paid the same.
Boxing + clown show =/= MMA. That's called reality. MMA HW champ doesn't deserve more money when its boxing + clown show people are more interested and paying money for it. You can't even blame the viewers of that clown show when they may legitimately find those more entertaining. MMA is still not a 'popular' sport. I think some people really should get that into their head.
it was the other way around bud, Francis was champion for 2 years waiting for Jon then as soon as Francis left Jon comes back screaming hes the goat asking about Francis knowing dana would never do cross promotion.
Thanks for this video, I'm writing my semester long labor economics policy brief about a potential UFC fighters union and this video was super helpful.
I compare UFC to the WWE. The biggest powerhouses in both their genres and the brands are known all over the world. But there's many problems with how they treat their contracted talent, and the power seems to lie with one person. Dana with UFC and Vince McMahon with WWE.
Mma will change just like every other sport has changed in ways that can not be seen as of yet. Mma may be broken now and for some time to come, but that doesn't mean it won't be improved down the line.
Another phenomenal presentation, Tommy! Incredibly impressive. You are doing amazing work, my friend. Thank you for all of the time, effort, and research you put into this project in order to share it with us. If the fighters are ever going to see anything even remotely resembling fair and balanced treatment, productions like this are sure to help get the ball rolling. Keep up the good fight, kind sir! I think I speak for the vast majority when I say it is greatly appreciated -- and I'm not even a paid fighter -- just a fan who would like to see these athletes receive what they so clearly deserve.
The UFC appears to want the respectability that comes with being a major sport, but without the requisite administrative structures such as player associations, salary caps etc. It still can't quite shake the fact it was saved by gangsters. Respect to you Tommy for taking on the critique of John S. Nash and being constructive with his feedback. Most people just bitch and moan lol
We ought to be proud of Ngannou. The man who made it from the sand mines, travelled nine months to get to France illegally and became the Heavyweight champ of the world. Such people are not driven by money, they're driven by values. Ngannou wanted health insurance and athlete representation. He quit for that, not for money.
One thing many persons overlook, that some have beaten this system. At one point Mac Gregor was a feared and very good fighter, probably still are but not the same hunger. But the biggest victory I would say is how he played the game. As I understand it he was poor, now he is very rich. Jackpot!
I'm pretty sure you're right about the Right to a Speedy Trial being only for a criminal case. The government can't make you wait years for justice or punishment. But if you sued me, I could wrap it up in paperwork to take years to even read through. But, I'm no lawyer, so I could be wrong
I am interested to see what happens to mma in the next 5 years. If you look at the comments on these power slap videos 👋 that the UFC keeps putting out, it is flooded with people asking Dana to plz stop posting these under the banner of the UFC. His response has basically been been to give everyone the finger and just completely ignore the feedback from loyal fans, sometimes even going so far as to insult the fans. I used to be neutral on Dana as a person but this last year he has left nothing but bad impressions on me.
You're Dana's favorite and you get free wins like Suga or Paddy. Dana doesn't likes you and they won't book you even if everyone wants to see you, like Ngannou. Literally how tirants are made, you do good as a leader, power gets to your head, you destroy what you've created. It always happens like that. Sad to see it on my sport.
Here’s my solution: Someone needs to create a maintain an Elo ranking system for MMA (the system that they use in chess). That way, there is a ranking system independent of the UFC. The UFC won’t be able to drop fighters from the rankings or force them into bad contracts because the fighters have the security of their ranking. It takes away a lot of leverage from the UFC.
@@TextieruL The UFC definitely makes the rankings. That's why they often make no sense. In fact, they have dropped certain fighters from the rankings during pay disputes.
Maybe a part two of this: How the Ali Act changed boxing. Specifically for individual fighter pay and benefits. Then compare those specific changes to the current MMA situation. One thing I’ve looked at is undercard fighter pay. Looks like undercard boxers get hosed. Did the act really improve much of anything for the every fighter? Or, did it just give more leverage to the top boxers?
I would recommend my previous video on the Act called "This Could Destroy the UFC." It explores a bit more of those ideas, about the undercard pay and some other things like too many sanctioning bodies.
I feel like this video was a long time coming, with how long hardcore fans knew about the injustice being done to fighters. Videos like this need to get more attention from mainstream MMA media then hopefully there will be change. It may be broken but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fixed. Props to Mma on point for vids like these💯

The fact people think Ngannou was "scared" of Jones is mind boggling. Jones tried to duck Ngannou to fight Stipe before he got the belt, and when Ngannou got the belt he was the reason negotiations fell through. Ngannou is the worst stylistic matchup for Jones in his whole career.
Yea I haven’t really watched mma since the 2000’s. It seems like the combo of social media and ufc underpaying these guys so much it’s really killed the sport. As soon as a guy gets his name out there he hardly ever fights after that cause he can make as much money sitting at home endorsing shit on social media as he would putting himself through fight camp and weight cuts for a fight.
Ya, it ruined boxing. Ever wonder why there are 500 undefeated boxers now? They all pick easy fights. It destroyed the sport and made the richest boxers richer and the poorest boxers poorer.
Wow this was just simply amazing, is there something anything a random person like me can do to help other than continue to bring awareness to this topic?
On the one side I love the UFCs matchmaking. They make interesting fights and give us a chance to see the top fighters fight each other. On the other side the power of the UFC is frightening. We see some of the best athletes in the world sell their lives for peanuts compared to other sports. Something has to change, thanks MMA On Point for shining light on the situation!

@@OneWarriorNation91 I’ve been a fan since the original gladiator games in Ancient Rome and it’s been hard to watch the sport go down this path
How dare the UFC build an entire sport and then profit from being great
Ankalaev vs Blajovich is a prime example of the control the promotion has on the competitive nature of the title and ranking system.

Hopefully.
Considering they have a whole staff, they should be on top of it a lot more than other mma channels. That being said the quality is still great.
Check out Geekay and Jack Slack
There are more. Aforementioned Jack Slack and Geekay but you also got MMAI, Ariel Helwani and a few others I am forgetting.
That was a rollercoaster of ride. You can tell the hard work that was put into this, thank you.
Much respect 2 U.

Maybe that’s why Dana is promoting Slap League. UFC fighters are getting smart and so he needs to find some not so smart people to exploit. And given the fact that slap league literally will make you even dumber, it’s the perfect recipe. Dana is indeed a business genius.
And even if they come in smart, after a few slaps they'll be dumb enough to sign whatever
@@Timujen Correct me if I'm wrong but I think someone already suffered from brain damage in the very first episode.
Hard to belive that a person who signs up for standing still and getting slapped multiple with full force could become dummer.
There’s more concussions in boxing. Just saying.
He’s not a business genius. The whole reason the UFC is a success is because the Fertitas pumped so much money into it after Dana’s habitual failures. It also went mainstream because of the likes of Conor McGregor. He doesn’t do shit.
Shoutout to Jason and Luke editing this so well 👏🏻 Excellent viewing experience
Spot on
Sean O'Malley is UP inside Dana White. Snorkle action. Goggles foggy.

Wow you guys are taking production value to a new level
It’s the concept that’s a new level not the production lol. Unless you though the word art quoting Machiavelli was some serious S tier production.
Shout out to Nicholas Machiavelli, dude was spitting fire with those bars.
Machiavelli was a political snake, worse than the people he criticized. Check it out, it's on the history books.
Just no question that these are youtube's best MMA videos

When a guy like jake makes more money fighting than the worlds hw mma champ is crazy we’re in the twilight zone

@@Valeriuciocan18 let alone that he was the promoter as well.
@@Valeriuciocan18 not true, since the UFC gives fighters a lower percentage of the money the fight makes compared to boxing

I compare UFC to the WWE. The biggest powerhouses in both their genres and the brands are known all over the world. But there's many problems with how they treat their contracted talent, and the power seems to lie with one person. Dana with UFC and Vince McMahon with WWE.
The good thing about absolute rock bottom is that virtually any change would be an improvement, excited to see the fighters get something more

Mma will change just like every other sport has changed in ways that can not be seen as of yet. Mma may be broken now and for some time to come, but that doesn't mean it won't be improved down the line.
Yep, even major sports leagues like the NBA and MLB had to unionise and collectively bargain to get paid a higher revenue split.
I don't know how anyone can believe anything that comes out of Dana's mouth anymore, these people are lost causes.
This channel is putting out amazing mini documentaries. I have high hopes for all of your futures.
These athletes are amazing. I hope they all get to live out a comfortable retirement when they leave the sport someday
One of your best work so far, guys!
If you guys had UFC event media credentials, you don’t anymore😂 Great video you guys, super important.

Dana White using Stevie Wonder as a judge doesn’t help things.
but he really doesn’t give a toss about his fighters.
Excellent, excellent work. Many thanks for clarifying the reasons why it has become more and more difficult to be a fan.
Dana’s been a douche Nate Diaz been saying “ fuck Dana white “ for years
Hopefully other promotions step up, even though UFC is the WWE of MMA.
Dana white is a relic that holds back the sport
Thanks for the video! Not sure if you've made this one yet, but could you make a video talking about ways UFC fighters make money outside the UFC?
You're Dana's favorite and you get free wins like Suga or Paddy. Dana doesn't likes you and they won't book you even if everyone wants to see you, like Ngannou.
Literally how tirants are made, you do good as a leader, power gets to your head, you destroy what you've created. It always happens like that. Sad to see it on my sport.
This was so good. I learned so much in a remarkably short time.
You know it’s real when the stress violins start the content
Here’s my solution: Someone needs to create a maintain an Elo ranking system for MMA (the system that they use in chess). That way, there is a ranking system independent of the UFC. The UFC won’t be able to drop fighters from the rankings or force them into bad contracts because the fighters have the security of their ranking. It takes away a lot of leverage from the UFC.
I'm not sure, but the UFC has nothing to do with the rankings. I think the media does the rankings.
@@TextieruL The UFC definitely makes the rankings. That's why they often make no sense. In fact, they have dropped certain fighters from the rankings during pay disputes.
FightMatrix fits the closest description. I always check out that site for world rankings.
@@majortom331 FightMatrix is good, but their ranking system is also subjective. We need an Elo system that no one can argue with. Math is impartial.

Maybe a part two of this:
How the Ali Act changed boxing.

Jon Jones literally said all this like 3 years ago and then sat out for 3 years and now people swinging from Francis nuts like he invented it. Even 2 years ago Jones rejected the Francis fight because he believed fighters deserved more pay. Jones has now opened that door
