I respect your work Mattpat, but there are ways to get around this. You haven't included the amulet coin which doubles prize money, or O-powers which can triple you prize earnings and stacks with the amulet. There is also the move Happy hour. This move doesn't stack with the amulet but DOES stack with O- Powers. End result being *over 6x* what you came up with. Lastly, you can take away the costs of transportation since most trainers end up using Fly to travel most places.
Honestly, I was expecting the calculation to be based on the single, constantly proffitable item in the game that exists in real life, the nugget. A solid chunk of gold, would have DRAMATICALLY changed the calculations.
Daikataro Kamegawa that's not necessary for being a pokemon master. Buying and selling would not be something every trainer does, just yours. It would change the calculations but they would not be accurate. He calculated the ratings you make solely on your journey to the top, only using lemonade as a comparison tool to the real world.
Aroven Talmav That's the thing, I can't remember whether or not it is, or what references are given, since I'm not a theorist. Point is, the au lait is a real world item, modelled after the game, while the chunk of gold is a real world item, that already existed, thrown into the game.
Gamer, that's exactly my point; the au lait was born into the game, and shortly after, thrown into the real world as a novelty item, while the nugget, aka gold, has one, always existed in the real world and two, always been valuable, and a fairly reliable tool for calculating value. Just my opinion of course, but I stand that the nugget was a superior choice, when calculating the value of a pokedollar. NOW! Hold on a second we might have something in our hands. While the weight itself, is never stated, one, all the entries say it is made out of pure, high quality gold, and very important two, it has a fling power of 30, putting it on a weight scale with several other items. I'm certain Matpat could go on from there, I just won't since like I said, I ain't no theorist and am lazy.
Daikataro Kamegawa oh I'm sorry I actually read your first comment wrong. :-( what I thought you meant was that why didn't he put in items such as the Nugget as a reliable source of income. The only reason I can assume that he didn't use the Nugget instead of the lemonade would probably be because gold values fluctuate dramatically and very constantly as well as they differ from around the world.
Anyone else wish that MatPat would do a sort of post-Show livestream after theories where he would address questions or criticism for a particular theory? Because sometimes he gets a lot a flak or confusion from his fans and it’d be nice to have some clarification or follow up. I remember really early game theory where he actually had an episode dedicated to responding to comments and it was really fun. I know that there’s probably a chunk of people who won’t watch it but idk I think it’d be a fun way to connect with some of the more dedicated fans of the show
This is a great idea! I’ve seen posts discussing more about MatPats theories then MatPat does himself, like an analysis of his theories. Something like this would not only clear things up but improve his theories. Perhaps make a reddit post for it so it’d be easier to see comments as it wouldn’t be as crowded as TH-cam or Twitter. Anyway this is a great idea that I hop MatPat will see and take into consideration at least!
Ross Castaldi Maybe It could also reduce his work load because he can do these in alternation with Game Theory so he might have more time to produce game theories so he can better research some of this stuff and just have less flak in general.
That one person without a creative name Thank you but I want to point out that we don’t really know MatPat’s exact process in creating a game theory or running his channel so he’s probably thought of this before but decided not to a variety of reasons. For all we know that episode of GameTheory where he replied to comments could have tanked and just gained views over the half decade its existed so it looks like a success to us despite bieng a failure
Since Ash walks everywhere, I feel like you wouldn’t need to include transportation, and the Pokémon universe seems to have free healthcare so I don’t think you’d need to include those expenses either. That would probably cut about a third of the remaining price off.
Free healthcare is probably the least realistic part of the series. That many people out of the workforce having to be supported by everyone else doing jobs and being taxed to cover it all. That place would look like Venezuela.
@@qapiojg In many places in Europe it is very typical. The healthcare is free (at least for the most common services), but you have to pay a lot of taxes to cover it. Quality is another issue of course but the healthare is free.
Lmao I’m wearing headphones and at 0:20 when you had the soft voice singing along I go rely scared because I could have sworn someone was singing in my room 😂
I don't usually speak up, but there are actual restaurants in the pokemon games that you could've accounted for in the prices of food, also, most of the dishes, which the *people* are eating are made with the berries that you can find and grow in the game, basically, you can make your own food and supplementive liquids out of things you find on your journey, like Brock, if you are using the anime. Ingredients such as milk and eggs can also be found in the game (From miltanks and breeding) and I bet that there is a pokemon version of wheat, since cake and bread exist, so making your own food using survivalist type farming (which on a wandering journey you would probably read up on beforehand). Not to mention that in the anime, Ash travels with 2 Gym leaders, who both probably have paychecks from the pokemon league as you said, and Brock is shown making/providing the food for the biggest part of the show. So you could most likely cut the costs of food from the journey (or at least Ash's) to lessen the cost of it. Also, since you didn't cut transportation, which in the average I assume you are using (the one that includes gas prices for owned motor vehicles, which are not used regularly by the characters in the show) you could have at least cut out gas prices because the most we see is the occasional train/boat ride since most of the transportation is done on foot. There are also the rare treasures like the gold nuggets that you get and sell for the real big bucks, increasing your profits by a large amount, plus if you get a lucky amulet (which you do in the majority of games) it would double your battle income. Some games also tackle the low income of pkmn trainers by offering jobs in hotels, serving at those aforementioned restaurants, and even becoming a farmhand. So the overall losses of the journey would be much less than you calculated :/ That being said I don't mean this as harmful in any way, just as some points that could have been added for more accuracy, because I love your videos *thumbs up*
I just started the video, but wouldn't traveling through the wilderness, constantly on the move, be a bit more cost efficient than staying at home? With a house, you have food, water, electric, car, and house payments, and presumably less Pokémon to catch and people to fight in order to gain money. On the road, you don't have to pay a lot of those expenses, and meet more Pokémon and people to fight. Sure, hotels can be pretty expensive, but they probably spend a good chunk of the time on the road anyways.
Matt Pat completly ignores so much in this Video, it's laughable. He claims to research sooo much, but in the End, does he really? Just counting the very First Game is pretty dump. Jared Jones besides, you can sell all the random items you find on your way. all you really need are a few pokeballs and skill, that's it. heck, there are people out there that sell magicarps for 500 pokedollars (which is nothing and still considered a ripoff) so imagine how cheap magicarp meat must be. like come on, i am sure people in coastal towns in the pokeworld eat tons of fish just like in real life japan. and magicarps are so easy to fish aswell, like you dip your fishing rod into the water and mere seconds later a huge magicarp is on the other end of it. like, you dont even need a super fishing rod or anything, just the most basic one
Onetwo Threefour in the anime when stranded in the ocean I'm pretty sure Jesse, James and Meowth try to eat a Magikarp only to comment how bad it tastes and how it's nothing but bone but it's been a while so don't quote me on this
Wait, if parents choose to send out their kids despite MatPat's perceived loss of money, wouldn't that mean the vending machine he uses as a baseline is price gouging?
Amulet Coins, I don't care they weren't in Red/Blue, they were literally in every single game after. Pokecenters are free hotels for trainers, sleeping and eating is free. And in Sun/Moon you get paid a million if you get all the Ultra Beasts.
I feel that lemonade and fresh water are worth more in pokemon due to healing properties and due to the fact that pokemon can make rocks from nothing homes probably cost less
I want Ash's age!!!!1!!1! ...Yes, I did count exactly how many exclamation marks and 1s there were in the on-screen image to write this comment. You're welcome.
When boys start grow mustaches? So that is his age. And if it isn't obvious yet time of the show work different then real life. All series take place in spawn of maybe few years inside universe.
Well, the main problem is that the two worlds are VASTLY different, even without pokemon. Aside from looker in gen 4, we never see evidence of a cohesive government. Healthcare appears to be free (which may be covered by the corporations that profit from battling), and housing is scarce (seriously, you never really find any unoccupied homes). Needless to say, comparing our world to the world of pokemon is like comparing apples to imaginary oranges. Maybe lemonade is far more expensive in the pokeworld because of a shortage of fruit trees (think about it, how many have you ever actually seen). Perhaps on these tiny islands with small economies, that money is worth far more. In fact, I think there is good evidence that there is good money to be made, because everyone and their dog in pokemon tries it, and the corporations who make money off of those people are clearly well-off. Just a thought.
@Porter Sorensen Plus the world of the games is vastly different from the world of the anime so you can't really use the anime as a reference point either. (with several anime exclusive towns, attractions etc., making the anime's regions a lot bigger)
actually transportation and food should also be cut out since they only eat berries and cook stuff they find in the wild and they only travel by walking. Healthcare is also not an issue since they have hospitals free of charge, the only thing you should count is the extra part.
ash and company have to eat, and we have seem them on restaurants and brook have talk more than once about having to go to buy food. Even they buy their pokemon food. So yeah, I cant see Ash and company hunting pokemons to eat. We have seen them cooking on the movies like por example the first one. And yeah, Pokemon centers are free, but we are not sure about human hospitals, we only see one on one episode and it was an emergency so the money is not mention. And about transportation... in the game you have to buy tickets to take a boat, that ash and company have some free rides that doesnt mean that every transportation method is free. And for easy that it may look to just ride your pokemon it sure is not that easy to do on long distances, and your pokemon will get tired or will be very small to be able to make a global journey with you on their back.
me: watching youtube in my pajamas eating chips MatPat: calculating the net worth of a character from a fictional universe about catching small monsters
Please calculate Ash's age, MatPat. I'm very interested in finding that out...as well as if he has some sort of disease and that's why he never seems to get past age 10.
Objection, Matpat your theory was well thought out but you forget that as trainers travel they also find many valuable items such as the star piece or amulet coin which can be sold to the shop for a good amount of money and as for food the Pokemon centers offer free food and housing for trainers, and most times trainers eat any fruits or berries found around them as seen in Pokemon black and white the third episode with an apple tree , not to mention theirs always that underage gambling (special mini games) in the games, along with the fact that the transportation part of the cost should be cut as trainers use their Pokemon or get free rides where they need to go as shown in ORAS with the boat man with his peeko
I also feel like taking the amount of time for the journey from the anime but the amount of battles and money you get from the games to be not reasonable. The anime and games are too different for cross referencing.
Don't forget the trainers with a Pokèmon that has the ability pick up. Seriously, my last playthrough of Ruby had my linoone as mvp purely because of the free healing items and gold nuggets he was finding.
Actually, there are 5 things you forgot to mention in the video: the move Pay Day, the Amulet Coin, and the ability to rematch trainers, the Pokecoins from Pokémon Go, and the things you can sell (Stardust, Nuggets, Berrys, ETC…). Calculating the actual amount is pretty hard considering these.
I think they can get free food when they eat at rhe Pokémon centers. I think I remember in the original few series, it is implied that not only do they shelter, heal, and feed their Pokémon for free, they shelter and feed the humans for free as well. So that would cover food a lot of times. Especially if they're fine with the simpler meals they provide there.
I wonder how these Pokémon Centres are funded. Are all the adults in the Pokémon world with jobs subsidising the adventures of 10-year-old trainers through taxes?
Actually Nurse Joy has treated trainers in the past as well. Like if they were badly injured as well. She'd really have no choice but to do so or call a hospital while she's treating the trainer's unconscious pokemon
This is the exact reason Ash (and his mom, since he was only 10 at the time) signed a contract to have a camera crew follow him around and start a reality show of his own.

Didn't exist in Gen 1. Sure it would be different in other games.

Honestly, I was expecting the calculation to be based on the single, constantly proffitable item in the game that exists in real life, the nugget. A solid chunk of gold, would have DRAMATICALLY changed the calculations.
Daikataro Kamegawa Is the weight of the Nugget stated?
Daikataro Kamegawa that's not necessary for being a pokemon master. Buying and selling would not be something every trainer does, just yours. It would change the calculations but they would not be accurate. He calculated the ratings you make solely on your journey to the top, only using lemonade as a comparison tool to the real world.
Aroven Talmav
That's the thing, I can't remember whether or not it is, or what references are given, since I'm not a theorist.

I know that there’s probably a chunk of people who won’t watch it but idk I think it’d be a fun way to connect with some of the more dedicated fans of the show
DisasterRook YES that’s such a great idea!
That`s an awesome idea! Hopefully he sees this :D
@@qapiojg a million times worse than venezuela for sure

So the overall losses of the journey would be much less than you calculated :/
That being said I don't mean this as harmful in any way, just as some points that could have been added for more accuracy, because I love your videos *thumbs up*
And THAT'S WITHOUT HAPPY HOUR OR ROTOM MONEY
Damn that's a paragraph and a half
I just started the video, but wouldn't traveling through the wilderness, constantly on the move, be a bit more cost efficient than staying at home? With a house, you have food, water, electric, car, and house payments, and presumably less Pokémon to catch and people to fight in order to gain money. On the road, you don't have to pay a lot of those expenses, and meet more Pokémon and people to fight. Sure, hotels can be pretty expensive, but they probably spend a good chunk of the time on the road anyways.

Porter Sorensen that was really well thought out. Good job.
Porter Sorensen Holy mac and cheese. Matpat got outsmarted
Pokedollars = Cents
@Porter Sorensen
Plus the world of the games is vastly different from the world of the anime so you can't really use the anime as a reference point either. (with several anime exclusive towns, attractions etc., making the anime's regions a lot bigger)
not only is health care free but they are fed and housed at any pokecenter for free too I belive. Don't quote me on that tho
Okay, can we just agree that MatPat is a better singer than a lot of Grammy winners?
Heck yeah❤
actually transportation and food should also be cut out since they only eat berries and cook stuff they find in the wild and they only travel by walking. Healthcare is also not an issue since they have hospitals free of charge, the only thing you should count is the extra part.
They basically live like Man vs Wild (pokemon) with government fund support (pokemon center etc.).
Niochi hatake yep
Live in the wild and pay for hardly anything, and still don't have enough money. :(
Pokemon Centers in the games are for the Pokemon, they have no use for the humans other than its PCs.
ash and company have to eat, and we have seem them on restaurants and brook have talk more than once about having to go to buy food.

I think they can get free food when they eat at rhe Pokémon centers. So that would cover food a lot of times. Especially if they're fine with the simpler meals they provide there.
