We visited Sanibel and Captiva in 2008, it was beautiful. Had lunch at Doc Ford's (it's re-opened, yea!). I have to say, however, that I don't know, I know many hope that this is a one-off, that it won't happen again in 100 years, but extreme weather events like this are more and more common around the world. I have to say that if I owned one of those beautiful homes and it had been damaged, I'd get it restored, then I'd have to think long and hard about staying or selling.
The first time I crossed that bridge from Sanibel and Captiva I felt like I had dropped into a tropical paradise. I absolutely loved that place in all its glorious greenery. So sad to see this devastation. Glad to see they are making a come back!
I feel the same way, I don’t think we’ll be headed there this year, not sure if there’s anywhere else quite like our beloved Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
Thank you for filming Sanibel Island. I felt so bad when I saw all the devastation they experienced. I live between Buffalo & Rochester NY. My grand parents retired to Port Charlotte Florida in the early 60`s. I visited & stayed on Sanibel, the beaches &the island were so beautiful. I enjoyed the Bubble Room there, it was so much fun. I also went to the reserve that was closed you showed. My niece lives in Naples area said some of her students lost there houses @ that time. I was wondering how Fort Myers is doing?
It is amazing the recovery and restoration effort has been tremendous all through Sw Florida . ye sit will be ongoing with thousands of roofs left to be repaired , more debris to be haul away , lots of repairs, but it is happening
WOW... That Blind Pass bridge and 3 miles past deeper into Captiva was a Shaded Tropical roadway... Now, stripped and dead palms. Such a shame. Hopefully nature brings it back... but it surely will be many years.
The natural beauty will come back- but it will take years after buildings get repaired. What won’t be fixed for decades- if ever, will be all the trash and pollution blown into hard to get to areas- mangroves etc. In that respect, the entire region is polluted with material that won’t ever degrade. This is fact, and heart-breaking. Living in expensive real estate within a now massively polluted area is somewhat ridiculous. I’ve seen it with my own eyes too.
I remember the first time I saw Captiva Island in 1976…there was only one road onto the island, and the foliage was so dense, you could not see any homes….good to see the Bubble Room and Tween Waters Inn were still standing, but I wonder about the historic South Seas Plantation….
@@jonathonspiers8397 I flew over South Seas a month after the hurricane and it did not look good. Seeing the effects of Charley on South Seas, I can only imagine it will be 5+ years until the vegetation begins to fill in to a recognizable level

I wonder if the “bent tree” is still standing? My kids always looked for that tree heading to the Bubble Room.

you are right Dale, I saw so much debris in the forest, mangroves , very difficult get to
Spent lots of time at the bubble room… now destroyed…
Federal flood insurance is now bankrupt…

This really makes you think twice about buying in these areas as climate change is making a big impact as well as insurance costs go up!
