  • The best treks are ones that change you, that afterward you will never be the same, and let me assure you that after completing this trek "backpacker" is not the title for you.. have now earned yourself the title of a mountain man. But what will it take to graduate? ....this trek quite possibly be the one you have been dreaming about. High alpine passes, check... Meandering rivers....check. Hundreds of trout filled lakes...check. Exciting off trail segments....check. Going a day or more with out seeing a sole... check. There I said it, this very might be the best mountain region for high alpine trekking in the whole United States and I am convinced this is the best route through it. The Wind Rivers are a high glaciated range of mountains that run a 100 miles along the continental divide. The trek runs North to South from Green Lakes to Big Sandy along much of the continental divide trail. I've seen many posts from people hiking in the area that exclaim, "Next time I am going to explore higher up Titcom Basin, or I should have taken the detour into the circ of the towers." This route makes sure to hit the classic spots while taking you deep in between where few souls will be seen. Love high mountain country....let the planning begin...and dont hesitate to tackle this trek of a lifetime.

    I envy you for taking this trip. Always wanted to do the Wind River. Now, I'm 64 and 8 days on the trail wouldn't be a good idea (bad knee). I thank you so much for sharing this. At least now I know what it would have been like.

    Always an adventure in the Winds. My wife went three times with me and will never go again. Rough trails, and the weather can be brutal. The fishing is great and probably the reason I return someday for a solo trip.

      Just returned from the Winds. Green River to ElkHart with a few detours. Partner wanted to leave after 4 days He bit off too much. Well he stuck it out to see Titcombe Basin and we came out on the 7th day

    Hey man, this is really awesome thanks for sharing! Thinking of attempting a solo of your route this coming summer, and just wondering what you did for transportation since this is not a loop? Did you organize a shuttle and is there some kind of forum to find such folks? Thanks!

    • @JacksonAlvey
      @JacksonAlvey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Great Outdoor Shop in Pinedale does a shuttle service. I haven't used it, but it seems like they can meet whatever need you have. Their web site talks about it. www.greatoutdoorshop.com/shuttles.htm

      +Logan Deak Haha ouch. Then I suppose it's find some friends who will help, or pony up. Or don't go solo and you could split the cost between a group of people.

    I've run out of places to hike in Canada. I do similar long hikes in our mountains. This looks very interesting. I was confused at some point bicause you have place names identical to us in Alberta. Pipestone, Middle Fork, etc.. I guess early explorers had limited creativity. I've come across a dozen "Crooked" lakes in my travels. Where can I find more details on this hike? Cheers.

      Marty the books 'Wind River Mountains' by Joe Kelsey, Wind River Trails by Finis Mitchell, and Beyond Trails by Nancy Pallister are all excellent books on The Winds. Also the maps by Earthwalk Press and by Beartooth Publishing are excellent. You can also get customized maps by MyTopo.com.
