I think people with identity disturbance can relate to putting on a flashy, unique, beautiful identity to try and find something that finally feels right. (AKA the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. This is the source of every single one of them don’t @ me.) You try to become sunshine. But it’s wrong. It’s wrong in the pit of your stomach. No sunshine can last forever, and the sun sets. And you experience the darkest low yet. “I will be my sunshine, I will be my moon at night. Well who else could I be, when I can’t fucking see? I will be my sunshine, I will be my moon at night. I’m no one now, there’s no one now to be.”
So what’s the happy ending? Well it’s on the very next song on the album. Though intentionally it’s left vague. I think Will fought against the urge to have a satisfying answer to who he was, because as much as it hurts the real answer to identity disturbance is not to fight it. Not to dig down deeper, as in Hand Me My Shovel, I’m Going In! Not to desperately try to return to what you were once like, like on Self, with the resolution of “I’m gonna be myself again.” In fact, he contradicts this directly.
So on the final song, he sings:

Be. Not be nothing, not be himself, but to be. . Blank. It could be a blank space, for whatever he wants to be next. But I take it to mean: Just be. Don’t be the sunshine, don’t be the moon at night. Don’t search for yourself, because you won’t find it. A camera can’t take a picture of itself, after all. Don’t turn your identity inside out. Just be a point in time and space, and know people love you for you. Not for who you are, but for you. Just be!
