Susan Jacks truly had the most beautiful voice of any Canadian female singer, Along with Ann Murray.
She had a beautiful voice. She just passed away but what a great song
Rest in Peace Susan Jacks 1948 to 2022, You will be greatly missed.
Another worthy Poppy Family song is Where Evil Grows. Susan and Terry's voices blend so well together
"That's Where I Went Wrong" was another fine one.
Good Friends was my favourite
The same thing with A Good Thing Lost it really brings out both of their voices.
"That's Where I Went Wrong" was Her/Their other big hit from that time. Very dreamy and her lovely, innocent voice - you guys'll love it!
Where Evil Grows, Good Friends and lots of Susan and Terry's solo songs.
"That's Where I Went Wrong" is another great song from them!
This song was The Poppy Family's biggest hit song ever in America. The song did peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late summer of 1970. The former lead singer of this group was Susan Jacks. Her husband at the time, Terry Jacks, wrote and produced this song. She passed away around April of 2022. She was 73 years old. RIP Susan Jacks
Susan had a long beautiful blonde hair. May she rest in peace.
Need to hear Billy Don't Be a Hero by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
Need? Lmfao 🤦🏻♂️
The best version by far is by Paper Lace which went number one in the UK.
The best song by far IMHO by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods was "Who Do You Think You Are" .. Ultra catchy !
Or the original Billy Don’t Be A Hero by Paper Lace.
Early 70s pure pop. The radio loved this song.
Actually it was recorded in 1969
I didn’t know many people knew The Poppy Family. My dad used to know them because he was friends with the drummer so I’ve grown up loving this song.
OMG haven't heard this in ages....wow
I was thinking the exact same thing. " Poppy Family" didn't ring a bell, but I knew the song title immediately and the lyrics came flooding back and I heard that sweet voice in my head even before the music started. Music is an amazing gift !!! Oh by the way, it's been 50 years since I last heard this.
@@bgallagher8129 exactly...the name didn't ring a bell but when I heard the beginning I went omg...🙂
@@bgallagher8129ditto ✌️
Susan and Terry lived a few blocks from me in the 60's & 70's. Wonderful people and so down-to-earth. Underappreciated Canadian legends.
The Poppy Family had many hits at home in the early 70's, If You Go Away (Terry), Good Friends, That's Where I Went Wrong, Where Evil Grows. Susan had many hits on her own I Thought of You Again, You Don't Know What Love Is, Anna Marie, I Want You To Love Me, All The Tea In China...
"I'm Gonna Love You Too" and "Concrete Sea" were a couple more of Terry's hits.
Thanks Einstein!! 🤦🏻♂️
@@detectYou’re welcome Dufus.
Great song by the Poppy Family. Another great song from the era worth a listen is the New Seekers’ I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.
Beverly Bremer “Don’t Say You Don’t Remember” another voice I love
That is a fantastic song that I didn't fully appreciate when it was a hit. It's a classic.
Ne of my favorites
One
Great song, perfect for a female Friday. Early '70s hit that sounds like it's from one of the girl groups of the '60s.
Oh my gosh, I love that song and her voice, have not thought about that in years. I guess, don't say you don't remember.. you take it from there.
This song was Canada's contribution to the psychedelic 60's. It went to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Written & produced by Susan's husband, Terry Jacks, he had an even bigger solo hit in Canada with "Season's in The Sun' which has a very unique dark tone for what was pop music. He had produced it as a Beach Boy's recording but when they decided not to release it he recorded it himself. 'Seasons in the Sun' would be a great song for a reaction. I'll bet Amber & Jay have NEVER heard another song like it.
They’ve reacted to it. “Seasons In The Sun” is actually a Jacques Brel song which Rod McKuen adapted into English.
Shut up!!!
Brings back memories of my childhood. Susan Jacks was so beautiful and talented. Im in my sixties now and she was one of my first loves as a 12 year old kid.
This was a stunner of a hit when it came out. Just a great single.
Good friends is a great song. Susan Jacks was a treasure
Another Canadian couple to try THE BELLS "Stay A While"
The Bells was a group that for a time included Frank Mills. Their first big hit was Fly Little White Dove Fly and my favourite song by them is He Was Me, He Was You. Their hit song that followed Stay Awhile was Lady Dawn and it is lovely.
@@festidious2644 When I was a kid, there was a song I just hated, Love Me, Love Me, Love. It really used to upset me, like no other song. Later in adulthood I was amazed to find out it was performed by Frank Mills. His other big hit Musicbox Dancer also strangely got me in the feels. Later I got to interview him, lovely fella.
I was thinking of that very song!
Great suggestion! 😊
He Was Me, He Was You is really good too
Wonderful song! Still suggest from the 60s The Cowsills mom and kids Song" The Rain the Park and other things" this was a flower child song Then there was the Song" Hair" This was the real Partridge family.
Good call. I’ve suggested it a few times because Amber, the flower child at heart, would absolutely relate.
But you know what they say (or I say, at least), you can lead a reactor to a great song but you can’t make them listen. 😁👍🏼
I would start with Hair
Before casting actors for the Partridge Family the producers had looked at the actual family. The only one they thought they could cast was Susan. Seeing them later in life I can see why, they were annoying and dysfunctional as hell (likely for a good reason). Still they had some great songs
Yes Paul! I'd love to see Jay and Amber's reaction to The Rain, The Park... song, I absolutely love it, I feel transported back to the 60s every single time I hear it (even though I wasn't born til '67). And Hair makes me smile.
Don’t remember the group; do remember the song, especially the chorus!👍certainly remember terry jacks & seasons in the sun! Susan Jackson has a beautiful voice!
Wow! Have forgotten about this song. Love this. Actually remember the lyrics.
Poppy Family - Where Evil Grows
Terry Jacks - Concrete Sea
Terry - "I'm Gonna Love You Too"
The Poppy Family's That's where i went Wrong is also a classic song like this. And it also brings out Susan's beautiful voice.
I had this 45 as a kid - great memories.
Check out another Canadian group, The Stampeders "Sweet City Woman"
Yes!
I think they've already done it.
Yes they have, It's in their archives.@@Zebred2001
I was going to send them an email to say that Ronnie King (Cornelis Van Sprang) just died last week. I wanted a tribute reaction but couldn't really decide on a song because they had so many hits. A nice tribute song would be Oh My Lady or Minstrel Gypsy, although Ronnie plays a bigger part in Hit the Road Jack. For you Stampeder fns who many not remember try listening to Me and My Stone, great song the likes of which won't be heard again.
Perhaps everyone can email them and suggest the video called "The Stampeders - Oh My Lady"
I knew Susan,,what a lovely woman who was as sweet as her voice
OMG. This song was how my older sister and her cheerleading friends would torturing me with this song. They would constantly sing it to me. I’ve been scarred most of my life because of this song , what young teenage boy wants a bunch of older cheerleaders constantly singing this to you , I’m a victim. 😂😂😂
This song was released in March 1970 in the "United States" and in Canada it came out in 1969!
More Poppy Family!
Poppy Family - That's Where I Went Wrong (1970) and Good Friends? (1972). Another great one to react to is One Tin Soldier by another Canadian band - The Original Caste. This song, redone by Coven, was the theme for Billy Jack (1971), a movie you really need to see as a seriously-themed window into those times.
Hey, Terry Jacks.. the "Seasons In The Sun" guy! Forgot that he was in The Poppy Family.
Another good Poppy Family song is " That's where I went wrong" 😊 Might I suggest another female artist from around this same era 1969-70. The song is called " For the Love of him" the artist is Bobbi Martin. She has a great voice 😊
Another great AM radio song from my childhood. Susan had a beautiful voice that I never grew tired of when the song was played so much. Thank you for listening to it. I haven't heard it in decades.
Susan was the voice of the Poppy Family, a dynamic natural singer with many other songs to hear. RIP Susan April 2022
That's sad she died, I didn't know that. A very pretty woman.
@@VicMikesvideodiary Susan wasn't just pretty, she was an ethereal beauty.
I haven't heard this song in decades! Oh the memories it brings back. Being a kid and having my first little transistor radio, pulling in radio stations and hearing this song, and so many others.
The Poppy Family, we got to see them a lot on Vancouver Island, they were of course heavily played on local radio stations. They were and are great entertainers. Their music has aged well from back in the day until now. Dang I and an old person. 😎🍺☮️🇨🇦
Rest in Peace Susan Jacks. Always loved this song!
The original Poppy Family was a four-piece folk-rock-Indian band, with Terry Jacks on rhythm guitar, Susan Jacks on lead vocals and various percussion, Craig McCaw on lead guitar and sitar, and Satwant Singh on tablas. They stood out among all the Vancouver bands of the late 60s. Their recorded sound was more pop-oriented (and very good), but their live act was unique. Susan was indeed a beautiful long-haired blonde, and remained that way her whole life. I was Facebook friends with her (along with 4,999 other people, admittedly), and I had several good discussions with her online about music, politics and other topics. She is missed by many people.
OMG!!! Haven't thought about this song for a long time. It was one of my favorites back then and still makes me cry. So glad y'all reacted to it!!!
One of my favourite songs from the 60s. Their song "Where Evil Grows" is another one you've got to hear.
Loved Terry and Susan Jacks when I was a kid. Terry was a great singer/songwriter/producer, and Susan was a classic vocalist. Terry also wrote for a number of artists prior to leaving the music business. He then began to focus on the environment, and won an award from the UN for his environmental work.
I was 7yrs old, and my name at that age was Billy 8:05 and this song said Billy so often, i felt ... weird about it. Mixed feelings. Little kid. Today it brings back nothing but good memories. Love it.
Terry Jack's "Rock 'n' Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life)" is a deeper cut, kinda sad but still makes you feel good.
This song was HUGE that summer!
still have this great oldie in my ancient stack of 45's - it's one of a bunch that were my mom's before I got 'em in the mid 70's ... she married a "Billy"
Susan chose her brother's name Billy to replace Buddy in this song. In 2010 Billy donated a kidney to save Susan's life. "That's Where I Went Wrong" and "Where Evil Grows" also charted well on Billboard. They consequently followed up with numerous hits in Canada. In 1983 she released "Another Woman's Man". She was voted the best new country artist in Oklahoma for her song "Tall Dark Stranger".
Gosh..this is an oldie but goodie from the 60-70's? Sorry to hear Susan died...they had such a sweet sound!
This 1969 song was about a guy being sent to Vietnam and his girlfriend doesn't want him to go....the B-side of the 45 single was Terry Jacks performing his version of the 1958 "Death Disc" by Jody Reynolds titled "Endless Sleep".
Wow! This one brings back memories! I was 13 when this one came out.
You were right, Amber. Susan did have long beautiful hair!! I listen to this song all the time. Loved it since I was a kid. Susan's voice is gorgeous. 💕💕
"Billy, Billy Went a Walking" by the Beau-Marks, another great Canadian band...their best song was "Clap Your Hands" released in 1960...
Classic
So happy when I saw the notification for this song. I was listening to it just last night. Other great Poppy Family songs: Good Friends, I Thought Of You Again, That's Where I Went Wrong. Susan had such a great voice. Sadly she passed away in April of 2022 at 74 years of age.
It took me some 50 years to finally forget this song and now it's stuck in my head, AGAIN! Damn you! Damn you both!
Two years since she left us and I still feel the loss. Their best song was "Where Evil Grows" but I'd also like to suggest "Good Friends." Many good songs and memories from this duo.
I second Billy Don't Be a Hero! Great song.
I'm all in on Johnny Cash and his buddies! I literally listen to them 100% right now
If you guys want to hear more about The Stylistics, they have some amazing music that includes, "You Are Everything", "Break Up to Make Up" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New".
I had forgotten this song! Thank you for the memory.
I remember my older siblings playing this 45 record, I was nine. It's funny how a song can bring back so many memories, I remember Mom and my siblings loving music and playing LPs and 45s♥️🙏✝️✌️😎
I remember my mom had a few albums when I was little that she'd often listen to, but the unfortunate environment I/we were in made those albums leave me with unfavorable memories. One of those albums was “Poppy Seeds” by The Poppy Family.
A few years before my mom passed away, I was thinking to myself... “what could I get mom for her birthday?” I was wracking my brain trying to come up with something extra, extra special. So, I thought I'd do an online search for some of those albums that she had when I was little, that had been long gone. She had given them all away several years prior. I was really excited to find a CD of The Poppy Family ~ "A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973", which contained many of those songs she used to listen to.
Mom and I met for lunch at Applebee's for her Birthday, and afterwards we went out to my car, and she opened up her present, which was that CD and we sat there and listened to that music, and I felt such a connection with her. As I said earlier, all that music had less than favorable memories do to the unfortunate living circumstances back then, but here we were getting to listen to that old music together. I very much enjoyed it and I know she did, too. Those memories, to this day feel priceless!! Our most favorites are "Winter Milk", "Tryin'", "I Was Wondering" and "Which Way You Goin', Billy?" I liked your awesome thoughts and comments on that nationwide smash hit! I hope you will do more of their music in the near future. Thank you.
Haven't heard this beautiful song in years, it seriously taps into the emotions! You can hear a similar melody to this one on the song Summer and Lightning by ELO.
Yes, nice production. I probably haven't heard that since 1969. Beautiful song.
The best song The Poppy Family ever did was "Where Evil Grows"
Terry Jacks was insane for lettting Susan slip away. She was beautiful in every way. I can't listen to "Evergreen" or "Beyond The Clouds" without feeling my heart break.
"Beyond The Clouds" is still a favorite of mine all these years later.
Taking me back to my pre-teens, but it's so fun hearing this song again! This was The Poppy Family's biggest hit (here in the US anyway). The only other one I remember is 'That's Where I Went Wrong.'
a sad and beautiful song for a sad and beautiful world,
fyi In 1977, Susan met Canadian Football League player Ted Dushinski. They married in 1980 and had a son, Thad. The family moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 where she recorded the Juno-nominated song, "Another Woman's Man".[3] She was voted the best new country artist in Oklahoma for her song "Tall Dark Stranger". She became a staff songwriter for a Nashville publishing company and had several songs recorded, including a children's song on a Grammy nominated album entitled "Snuggle Up".
Susan was from my hometown of Saskatoon. Her second husband Ted Dushinski was my mom’s cousin and groomsman for mom and dad in 1961.
Wow!! I don't even remember the name 'Poppy Family', but I DO remember the song 'Seasons in the Sun'. But I don't think I've heard THIS song since literally in-the-day many decades ago!! Memory Lane! Great Choice You Guys! :)
Poppy family!!amazing
Susan had a solo career after the Poppy family split...she had some great tunes!
This was one of my favorite songs growing up. You should listen to more of their music for sure!
Love the Poppy Family. Thank you for doing a reaction & they have quite a few more beautiful songs.
I did not know what this song was but as soon as it started playing, I remember hearing it in my youth. Thanks for the memory again.
Such a lovely, sad song!! Lead singer has such a great voice. Terry Jacks also sang a lot of very, very sad songs.
Her husband was Terry Jacks who sang the song Seasons in the Sun that you played earlier
Interesting
Spot on!👍✌️
Another song that I forgot. But as soon as I saw the title I could instantly sing it in my head. Hadn't heard this in 50 years. Such were the times. Every detail comes back with a simple reference. Thank you.
Blast from the past! Good on you. :)
Where Evil Grows is a great Poppy Family song. Also check out Terry Jacks song - Seasons in the Sun. Not too many people (at least Canadians) who don’t know it. Staple of our teens ❤
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. Beautiful, awesome song.
True story Billy is Susan's brother Bill Pesklevits, The original title was Which way you going Buddy but Susan didn't like it so she said Which way you going Billy after her Brother Bill.
Amber. Another heart throb artist. "Puppy Love" Donny Osmond young
Wow…. Way back in the memory bank !
In the late 60's and early 70's there was a show called The Now Explosion which played videos made to match the song, way before MTV. This is one of the songs that played and stuck with me all this time. I was 11 when I saw it and I'm almost 66 now. Some things stick with you forever.
1970. Great year for music. Lotta of one hit wonders
The best. 1970
Great harmonies, love Susan Jacks. Check out 'Where Evil Grows', 'Beyond The Clouds', 'Good Friends?', 'I Thought of You Again', What Can The Matter Be?', Anna Marie or 'That's Where I Went Wrong'.
'There's No Blood in Bone' is the killer Poppy Family tune. Fire!!!
My uncle Larry played bass and backup vocals on Terry Jacks' previous band to this, 'The Chessmen'. They did a heavy version of 'Wild Thing' before Hendrix did! In fact, one of Jimi's guitars is from The Chessmen early guitarist who quit music to study.
I forgot about this song!! My parents had it on record. So lovely.
I miss their music. It’s sweet and soft!
There is a performance video of this song showing Susan and Terry singing that is definitely worth looking for on TH-cam. Susan was beautiful in such an ethereal way (matched only by her voice) the adds an additional element to this song that is missed when just hearing her voice.
I haven't heard this one in many years... Thank you so much for reacting to this one... Such a beautiful song...good job, guys...Keep Being Awesome !!!...
Geez!! I haven't heard this song in decades. Brings back a lot of memories.
A few years ago I was reminded of this song and did a deeper dive into the Poppy Family. Found some cool stuff -Beyond the Clouds and That’s Where I Went Wrong are two I remember.
This was played on the radio every thirty minutes when it came out
A beautiful song.❤️✌🏻🎶
"Evil Grows" is an amazing song. A must.
"Where Evil Grows" is a great tune.
good find, not many know this little gem ;)
omigosh, i haven't heard this song in ages!!!!! Thanks.
