I’m so glad you’re having success. I’m so confused. I just saw a doctor who went through all the many ways that pro Tien destroys kidney function. I also have watched Dr. Berry’s videos on how pro Tien does not cause kidney dysfunction. My mother just died from kidney failure and I don’t really know what the truth is or which way to go because my kidneys are starting to give me real problems now.

I went back and looked at my lab work over the years and it has tanked from 84 to 52 in the span of ~8 years. Not a big drinker. Never smoked. Always exercised/lifted weights/long distance running. And yet I had bladder cancer at 36 and now my kidneys are showing signs of CKD. I started the Carnivore Diet in October, but then started eating carbs again. I’m now getting serious about it and hoping maybe I might see my GFR go up. Oh and to top it all off I have Premature Menopause 🤦‍♀️ grateful for all of your knowledge sharing.

Dr. Berry, you should recommend a Cystatin C blood test if the normal Quest lab work looks scary! My eGFR was completely normal in this more comprehensive test. Also, since I did have a scare and my Dr sent to me to a Nephrologist immediately, he said they never rely on the Quest/Labcorp labs equations for eGFR-they use the MAYO QUADTRATIC eGFR calculations to properly access your eGFR.I was freaked out for 3 months, waiting to see the Nephrologist, bc of a Quest lab BUN?CREATININE level & its eGFR. The Nephrologist did an Ultrasound and protein urine and Cystatin C blood work. ALL came out Negative! He told me to leave his office and eat a huge steak!!!!!!!! I swear!!!! P.S.- the Nephrologist was Keto and OMAD!!!!!! xo

I'm surprised he didn't mention getting a Cystatin C test. Dr. Sean Baker has said his eGFR using the creatinine testing comes out to a 54! But, with the Cystatin C test his eGFR is over 100. So, if you are carnivore, & work out, you may need Cystatin C test to get an accurate eGFR number.

Kidney stone means pain in your kidney! But that’s a special case.

thank you Dr. Berry! This means a lot to me, it might be too late for me, 59 months of dialysis and four months of transplant, but I didn't have this kind of information back then, and you are protecting thousands, no maybe millions, with this invaluable information that will save lives and livelihoods; I do want to add though a couple things I have learned along my journey - on the urination, when I had that problem I was actually so overloaded with the swelling/retention on the bottom half of my body that it was not only painful and coming out the normal urination path but it was also coming from my behind, so I noticed that every time especially at work or when I was in my car, I would feel it always wet and I didn't realize my body was expelling fluid as much as it could any possible way, and another thing you're right about the BUN, and I would say the things that you would look for especially regarding kidney functionality would be that GFR and presence of protein in the bloodwork/urinalysis as well as the creatine, to me are important things, other indicators could be examining the diet/activity and checking the potassium level and of course that albumin and it would be good to look over at the hemoglobin and A1c as well for safety purposes

Dear Dr Berry, living in Germany, only single kidney left with CKD Stage 3a close to 3b. Calcium oxalate stones (1cm stone build in 4 weeks), a wewellit one and some unknown stones. Since total nephrectomy and low oxalate no more stones so far. My nephrologist is ok with Keto, aware of oxalate bad for kidneys but reluctant about carnivore, fearing I might set my way up to dialysis faster than with Keto. I sure can point her to all the vids and info but there’s not much about carnivore for people having CKD and only one kidney left. I would really appreciate if you’d do a vid about this as I found underneath many other vids other CKD patients wondering as well. Doc I think it's important to mention the Cystatin C test. So many people who eat a high protein diet, workout and have a decent amount of muscle mass, have elevated creatinine, which would signal reduced eGFR. Cystatin C gives a more accurate snapshot for people as there are less variables that muddy the water and give a potential false positive for kidney disease. I have seen so many people get their peace of mind back doing a Cystatin C test and finding their kidneys are actually completely fine, after first being told they have potential kidney disease on a creatinine test.

    • @maryanthony5659
      @maryanthony5659 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree. My Low carb Doc ordered a Cystatin C. My last eGFR was 72 mmol/L (Australia) and has hovered around this level since on carnivore.(apparently should be around 90 for someone my age) but the Cystatin C was 126mL/min. He said that this was good and he was happy that it gave - as you suggest- a more accurate and appropriate reading as the eGFR could be a little concerning.

    • @dancurran7669
      @dancurran7669 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This is critically important, so basically if you're creatinine and EGFR are out of range, you can ignore them completely if your cyststin c test is normal. This took years of going to internists and even some nephrologist didn't know about it. Another thing they can do is a urine sample collection for 24 hours and then they can see there's nothing wrong with you at all!

@PeCo333 CKD cats become very selective with foods and ones they used to enjoy no longer interest them. Not feeding dry, but currently he's only interested in pouch or canned fish varieties. It has to be very stinky, soupy and warm, otherwise no go. The biggest issue is getting them to eat at all, then worry about lowering phosphorus and sodium later. The best diet is whatever you can get them to eat. Proper cat diet isn't achievable at this stage.

I was doing a 72 and in a strong state of ketosis recently. I was also overcoming a bout of covid. About a day to 36 hr in I noticed my kidneys hurt, and my flow was low. I drank mostly water spiked with acv and lemon juice at that time. I know with autophagy and ketosis comes the shedding of fat, but that fat, I understand, often has toxins stored in it. Toxins plus covid shedding I thought, and the keytones themselves had to be processed too (4-8+ on average)...My kidneys were like Scotty on Star Trek shouting at me "Were givin er all she's got Captain" so I tried drinking plain water which helped a little. I stuck out my fast, doing only a little broth midway and a dozen frozen blueberries to keep my blood sugar safe. When I broke the fast, I thought to myself, "Okay, it's like a guy in a hot air balloon. I can't stop the covid shedding (add weight to the balloon) or anchor (stop keytones from doing their natural job) but I can put the break on ketosis by eating some carbs (letting some hot air vent). Sure enough, no more pain in the kidneys, but I hated to take myself out of ketosis. I'd love to hear your opinion, I don't normally have such pains, when doing day-to-day keto dieting. Thanks for all you do Dr. Berry! God bless...

It can be purchased OTC or online, no script required. Many thyroid docs recommend it now. It can help increase metabolism gently, triggering weight loss. HELP!
For context: I started the carnivore diet a month and a half ago. Before I started it, my skin was itchy after bathing and I thought I had an allergy to water, but now I have the same itching during the day, it burns and bothers and doesn't go away if you scratch it, it's worse. I am a person with dry skin.
I have tested positive for candida in the past. Five years ago I was vegan for seven years and this brought me low iron problems without anemia, and I was getting Petechiae outbreaks and I switched to keto carnivore, my body knows how to adapt to fat, since I ate regular I haven't gotten them again in the whole body and my iron rose. I discontinued a year ago and was on a regular whole grain omnivorous diet. Sometimes I think that the itch I have is mental, because if I am distracted it doesn't itch, but it isn't. In addition, last year I took a Dutch test, and it came out that my adrenal gland was under working. Functioning normally but producing little cortisol. So we moved to a sunnier climate and I feel better. My thyroid is always fine and my vitamin D is always low.
I am eating a ratio of more yolks than whites (eggs always pasture and organic) , uncured sugar-free bacon, (pasture, and GF, and regular red meat), organic chicken. It is possible that I have a slow digestion or low or high index of bile, I don't know. Should I increase the fat? I don't know, either.
I will take a perrier with ACV a day again. I am completely cutting out dairy products as of today because they cause my large intestine to bloat as if it were diverticulitis pain and gas. I have stools like a rabbit if I don't take 400mg of magnesium oxalate at night. This itchy skin issue, It could be a problem of oxalate or histamines, but the problem is not solved by eating fruits or taking benadryl. This itchy issue is also getting reactive with coffee, but I'm lethargic without it -_-, and now I'm feeling it even if I don't drink coffee.
Something that I also want to include is that at the beginning I had visible dead tape worms when evacuating, and I am not a person who consumes sugars, or fast foods, or wheat, not even boxed commercial foods, cereals ... I cook at home and I go for organic whole foods always because we have the budget. It could be that the parasites/fungal are starving and altering my nervous system, because in reality it is like a hypersensitivity in the skin, either circulatory or nervous system, that comes and goes. Today, after eating 4 yolks and 2 bacon strips, it felt better, barely itching.
I am going to try to increase to a gallon of water per day with the electrolytes to solve the constipation problem, and I will start taking charcoal to eliminate heavy metal contamination. I'm a 34-year-old female, I have a Mirena on, I'm 5'2 and I weigh 140. I'll appreciate any help you can give me!

Urine can also be foaming because of an infection in your urinary track.
    I've had that happen before.
I'm not sure how well my kidneys are working..
Some times i worry that i'm urinating too much..
Other times, my urine has a bit of a smell after eating quite a bit of protein rich food.
If you have too much protein in your body, you'll dump some of it out as it's not needed.. or so i've been told.
I know that when i cut back on meat or protein heavy plants, then the smell fades off and goes away.. then again, if i'm spilling protein i need.. that's worrisome..
I have not had dry itchy skin.. dry at times during extreme heat or cold? yes.. but not dry AND itchy.
I've also been told Kidney damage can cause some pretty bad Tinnitus.. not sure how true that is though.
And i've been dealing with a hissing in my head for awhile now.. then again, i'm a type 2 diabetic.. and damage to the nerves from being diabetic can cause this as well...

My doctor had me get a Cystatin C test to check my kidney function as well. What are your thoughts Dr Berry?

I have proteinuria, and foamy urine, but little if any other symptoms. My doctor prescribed a daily 2.5 mg dose of Lisinopril, to reduce my blood pressure. I monitor my BP every day with an average over 30 days of 108/67. Dr. has no idea of the root cause.

Your blood pressure is great! Lisinopril will do little to protect kidney function without fixing your diet.

    Uh-oh, I have these:
    Fatigue
    Trouble sleeping
    Dry itchy skin
    Urinate often
    Puffy eyes
    Muscle cramps
The cramps are the worst. Every night my feet and/or lower legs cramp and force me out of bed.
And I've been carnivore for over 4 years. I take magnesium daily and have for many years. I salt my meat heavily with redmonds.
I eat one pound of ground beef, twice a day. I've heard Bart Kay say that we need to eat a large enough bolus of protein at least once a day to elicit a large enough insulin response in order for our kidneys to properly regulate our electrolytes. Maybe I'm not getting a large enough insulin response daily and this is causing my electrolytes to be off?

If you haven't already, please try elimination diet, avoiding all processed foods as they contain many triggering chemicals. Investigate if you have a CSF leak in brain or spinal column. See Momming with Migraine on YT channel, see most recent videos (last 12 month).
My son had chronic migraine from childhood till early 20's. Docs never once suggested an elimination diet!. Not even the neurologist who we saw for his insomnia and absence seizures. It turned out to be MSG in so many processed foods, his favorite being ramen noodles, which is loaded with MSG unless you find the MSG free brands.
I get systemic pain from ingesting propylene glycol it is also in tons of processed foods, even things like vanilla and other flavors or extracts for baking. It's in beverages, liquids, beauty products, sun lotion, even many medicines: topicals & injectables. it's everywhere! What you put in or on your body matters. I hope you find your answers. ((Hugs))

When you have foamy urine it can just mean you recently switched diets typically to higher quality proteins
