    Great video. I'm the person who interviewed Randy and discovered the JUS4QIX licence plate story. You can read about that on my blog gingerbeardman - cheers!

      Hey that's awesome! Thanks for checking out my video! I checked out your blog and I'm surprised no one else ever reached out to him about QIX. Even though I discovered it through other means, it's a favorite arcade game of mine.

      @@SwooshxBear I know! It's crazy nobody had contacted him. I do wonder if a few years later they did for Taito Collection (this version of Volfied is cool).

    A brief correction: I mistakenly mention that EGM listed Qix as number 100 in its top *NES* games list, but the list is actually top 100 games overall, so that's an even greater reason to check it out!

    I remember Qix in the arcades in the '80s, among others (my personal favorite was Tempest). Yep, I'm that old.

      I really enjoy Tempest! I also got a kick out of Gyruss for having the similar "tube" direction format

    Kaneko, who went on to make a series of sexy Qix clones in Gals Panic, actually developed Super Qix for Taito first.

    So glad to have found this today. I love this series! Especially Super Qix and Volfied. And yeah, I found it out about the series through EGM issue 100. Still have that issue. I want a resurgence of this series. I have the Genesis release of Ultimate Qix and PS1 Qix Neo both CIB. Just beat Ultimate a few days ago and it’s always hard. Underrated series.

    I was introduced to the series with Ultimate Qix on Sega Channel. I could not for the life of think of the name or describe the game in a way that was searchable, but ended up finding it just looking through an online list of sega games with their covers.

    My introduction to Qix came in the form of a pornographic knockoff called Gals Panic that somehow ended up in the truck stop video arcade I often visited as a child. Instead of space landscapes or fantasy scenes, you uncovered pictures of a woman in various states of undress. I never got to any sort of R-rated content however because if you played poorly the woman would turn into a horrible nightmare fuel monster that would instantly scar the mind of any impressionable youth foolish enough to play a pornographic video game in a truck stop video arcade.

    • @MalamiteLtd
      @MalamiteLtd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Must've been a decent knockoff seeing as Taito themselves published the game in Japan.

    I learn about Qix (or more exactly, it’s gameplay) with the Fantasia series (the one with nude models on the background). Yep, I was like 10 years old, but aside from the explicit part of it, I really enjoyed the gameplay. Later I learned about Cacoma Knight and enjoy it a lot.
    Now, thanks to emulation, I can play every version of it… Even the XXX ones, lol.

    Qix reminds me of a better version of Snake. I freaking love that game and still play it as well. But Qix is something else. I love how many different versions we got just from this game. I can see someone make a movie about this game or at least the concept. Just like what they did with Tron. Pong and Snake was big insperation for Tron. Which is awesome and the movie The Last Star Fighter is like a classic Atari Space Shooter. Which we had alot back then in the Atari era.

  • @MalamiteLtd
    @MalamiteLtd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So which is better : Super Qix or Volfied?
    Also, looking at recent info from the Egret II Mini arcade site (where Qix and Volfied are included), it seems they pronounce Qix in Japan like "Quicks." Probably not the international standard pronunciation, especially considering what you mentioned as the name's origin.

    • @SwooshxBear

    The Game Boy version of Qix is cheaper because it was a big hit and it's therefore plentiful, that version became a million seller with 1.15 million units sold (published by Nintendo).

    Such an underrated classic! You did miss one game in the series in your overview, though. Twin Qix on the Taito F3 arcade hardware released in 1995. It's a Vs style Qix game that capitalizes on the mid-90's Vs puzzle game fad. Twin Qix simplifies the mechanics even further for this release for faster, competitive play. The US and Japanese versions, while playing the same, look quite different. Worth checking out if you're a fan of the series. :)

      And I'm here having searched for Qix, since I noticed from Gawr Gura gameplay that Bully has a Qix-inspired minigame.
      One thing I'm surprised of, is that there's no smutty mahjong -style bootleg Qix for the MSX system of computers. I would totally Kickstart a game like that now, though maybe the smut should be desexualized parody smut.
