Another item that I carry just in case is a small potable jump start battery pack. The ones with lithium ion batteries are small and powerful and can be bought at reasonable prices now.
As always, a clear, precise subject by a Corvette master. Lyle is always gracious and ready to help with questions. The only thing I might add to his "road kit" would be two shift cable grommets available from C&S corvettes. Ask me how I know that you might need one or both of these grommets. When my new to me C5 would not start, I checked everything I could think of. It acted like the neutral safety switch had failed. I called Lyle and he knew just what the problem was. He sent me two grommets which were simple to install once I got the car on a lift. The rear shift cable had disintegrated from age and the front one was not much better. A simple fix for an issue that would be difficult on the road. Thanks for all of your assistance. Please keep up the podcasts and helping us keep these great old machines road ready.
Great info Lyle, and much thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to show my wife and I around your awesome shop. Wish your son good luck at the race and see you next year! Happy Easter from Keith and Jeannie in Michigan!!
Loved the video, Great Advice........Speaking as someone who was once stranded in the Nevada desert between Winnemucca and Battle Mountain: Having basic supplies with you is a great help. Fred the wrecker driver was our guardian angel!! On Serpentine belts: Buy an American made high quality replacement belt. Install the new one on your Corvette. You have just confirmed that you bought the correct belt (and it was time for a new one anyway). Put the sleeve on the old belt (keeps the correct part number handy) and store it in your Corvette with your kit. Disaster averted!
A good gift for anyone is the roadside safety kits they sell in stores. has small tools, gloves, triangle, jumper cables, first aid, tow rope, and more.
I bring a 200+ craftsman folding tool kit. And you need pliers, flathead screwdriver and tire plugs. Saved me once already. Big tires pick up nails all the time
Hey! We both have jukes haha! I am about to post my thank you for 500 subs vid and I'm sitting in front of a 54 Seeburg HF100R I've restored! :) Love your vids.
Another great vid. Having bought and drivin multiple $200 cars from 1980 to 2000, I always kept all of the above. It's funny buying my 1st vette with 9k on her I am going to go back to my old ways.
I have AAA card and a complete tool kit with a air pump and blanket and a fire blanket and a rain coat and a radio and flashlight and a CB radio too I got everything the Corvette may need
Welding gloves are great for unexpected car work. Your cuffs will not get as dirty. Always have a small canvas painters tarp in your kit. I’ve found a big pair of channel lock pliers to be helpful, two in some cases. Only offering additions.
This is an excellent subject Lyle! Love the way you prioritized what one should travel with! FWIW, I do "travel" with my Vette, well, at least every other year. That's when I've gone to Bowling Green. That's a thirteen hour one-way trip for me. FWIW, I also like to do these long trips with a fellow Corvette Club or two or three. There's strength in numbers, or at the bare minimum, I like to know that if anything untoward happens to any of us that we're not alone. I'm going to do a print-out of your suggestions to have as my minimum number of items to travel with and then add my own personalized items to it. Save the Wave🙋♂️
Good video - potential additions, First Aid kit, knife or all in one tool, small role of electrical or duct tape, some type of personal protection The reason I bring up the knife is I ran over a grocery store plastic bag and it got sucked into the engine compartment of my Mustang and wrapped itself around the alternator and push the serpentine belt off. Needed a knife to cut it off. Lesson learned if at all possible do not run over ANYTHING!
NOTE; Fix-A-Flat it works by making the rubber soft from the inside out, so that tire will wear the tread off in only a few hundred miles after being put in a tire.
Howdy doody from Fort Myers. I am a new '86 corvette 4+3 owner and I enjoy your videos. I'm looking for a good shop to bring her to for things I cant not do myself or prefer a professional do, all fluids flushed etc...
Lyle, I think you should one more tool to your list-the appropriate serpentine belt wrench or 1/2” drive breaker bar to move the idler pulley with. Other than that, the video was pretty darned good!
Geof, I am operating under the assumption that most (new to the hobby) Corvette people do not have the skill to replace a serpentine belt on the side of the road and probably don't own any breaker bars, either. I also wanted to try to keep the footprint of this "kit" small enough to fit in the rear compartments without taking up luggage space. Lyle
Awesome video! I am wanting to take my C5 Corvette on a long road trip this summer but do have a question. I have roadside assistance with my insurance company, Geico. Is that good enough or is there a reason AAA would be better? Also, my road trip will be to Bradenton FL so I might just stop by C & S to see the showroom and check out some cool Corvettes!
@@Glide1992 True story: my Vette’s in for service at a dealership. Simple service. I don’t hear from them for hours. I phone for a Sit Rep. They haven’t even started to work on it. They’re waiting for Jack Pucks to use the hoist!!! I tell them There’s a set of my own in the trunk! Sheesh!!!!
@@davegregg1512 At least they knew they need pucks. I went to see a C6 Grand Sport at a stealership in town. They had it up on the lift with big pads on the hoist arms. Cracked the body right beside where a puck would be.
Avoid dickheads on the road . Service your car . Bottle of jack daniels . Coupla joints . Breakdown card , fixaflat n a non nagging missus . Cheers from Australia
My C5 Z06 came with fix a flat instead of spare and got a flashlight in owners manual if you going to carry a belt might as well carry a ratchet to move belt tensioner to install
Its what I have in my C5 Z06 FRC you probably have a hatchback . Sure you have a corvette and not a chevette. Seriously i can't hate on a corvette fell in love at 12 got mine at 58 even like the C4 now 🙃

Couldn't hurt to throw in a first aid kit as well.
Great idea!

My go to not mentioned...2nd set of keys with fob as needed

Lyle = Fix a flat does not work 4 Sh*t. Get a bottle of Slime or equivalent. MUCH better and will work
Have travels
Love your vids!
agreed
Thanks Lyle!
We do need someone to remind us these things, I'm setting up my emergency bag tomorrow, including a first aid kit.
That's it Lyle. I am never going on a road trip in my z06. Too scary now. ;-)
Thank you for the great advice- always so helpful

Unless you are willing to sacrifice the tire, DO NOT USE fix-a-flat!
Great advice. I also carry a cheap reflective vest
GOOD IDEAS. Thanks
I also carry a tire pressure gauge.
OMG thank you for the suggestion to carry around a serp belt! Why didn't I think of that?
Thanks for the tips! Good info.

What is a good run flat alternative.
@@michaelr.ingelsby1975 Google. Read Forums.
I couldn’t wait to get those things off my car, run flats are horrible
Petrol can (empty) just in case. You can always walk to a garage and get enough in there to get you going and fill up when you're back on the road. 😉
I take oil and belts and rubber hoses for the radiator and fluid for the radiator transmission fluid I Carry everything for my C3 Corvette

If you need a tow make sure towing company has ramps to get car on truck C5 Z06 only got couple inches clearance
Why ya gotta throw shade at Ottumwa? Its the pork and corn capital of the world and who doesn't like pork and corn?
I would put in vise grips instead of pliers and also a small coil of mechanics wire. IMHO.
You have a great speaking voice.☺️
Alsome information👍👍
Just bought a 2000 c5 corvette midnight blue 60k miles!!
Thanx for info
Is it a Pod Cast? Pod casts are audio only. You have a you tube channel video. Other wise we love your videos.
I have an Element personal fire extinguisher in every car.
I have Comprehensive insurance with zero deductible. 😉
I know what I need, a new drivers seat for my c5. 100,000k miles and still rollin'.
Good job.
