  • It's free real estate! Utility lands can provide players with free value, but how many is too many? We've collected the data for the most popular utility lands in the game, and checked some decks to see how many players tend to use, to find out when and why those numbers go too far.

    33:48 To explain Paliano, maybe: People often put drafted decks onto deckbuilding sites (to possibly rebuild them later to face the same players who have drafted from the same set, or just to remember their old drafts and mistakes/genius decisions made), and Commander Cube has become a thing, especially since Commander Legends and the Game Knights ep where that dude brought his in. So maybe those 29 decks are from cube experiences where Paliano was a fun, draft-based card in said cube, and the players stuck their decks on site for future reference. Also the "primarily Ramos/Golos" thing would support the cube idea, as these are great 5c commanders to include in a cube due to being colorless, meaning they are easier to cast than a WUBRG-cost commander.

    Yedora would also be pretty sweet in Obuun: Animate a trampling land with Obuun to swing in and if blocked and killed, as it is a non-token creature, Yedora will bring it back as a face-down Forest which will trigger the landfall on Obuun, plus you recover the mana lost by attacking with the land for the second main phase. As the face-down land is also a non-token the rigmarole can be repeated.

      Barring that you could run Trade Routes and just bounce em back to your hand and then recast them as creatures.

      @andrewsparkes6115 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zackkelley2940 Yedora making it a forest is linked to her bringing them back: only face-down creatures SHE RETURNS are Forests. She does not say “Facedown permanents you control are forests” or anything. Simply that she returns dying creatures facedown and THOSE SPECIFIC CREATURES are forests. So any cards you put facedown via morph/manifest/turn facedown via Ixidor will not be forests.

    My challenge the stats is firewild boarderpost in Borborgymos Enraged decks (and all other decks if Im honest).
    I considered this for my Borborgymos deck since EDHREC said players use it but I took the time to think it through before ordering it.
    Scenario 1 is I pay 3 mana for an artifact that enters tapped and can add 1 of 2 coulors next turn (any number of other cards do this and add one of anything)
    Scenario 2 is I pay 1 mana, return a basic to hand and firewild enters tapped (This didnt ramp me!). As a Borborgymos player I do benifit from having the basic land in my hand after this exchange which is nice... But I could have been using a guild gate in this slot instead and been more satisfied discarding that than the usless basic land I returned to hand, or a basic land could have been used in this slot.
    To add insult to injury my Borborgymos combat damage trigger is going to discard the wildfire where I would have kept the guildgate or basic that could be in this slot.
    If this doesnt support a land strategy like Borborgymos I dont think it can be justified in other land decks either but Id love to hear if someone has a corner case where this can be a bomb.

    If you run a bunch of utility lands that produce colorless mana in a dual/tripple color deck: One way to lessen the effects of having colorless lands is to include filterlands and signets. Obviously really useful if you run a ton of multicolored cards that require two different coloers. With a rakdos signet out you can still cast two 2-mana red-black spells turn 4, even if you played a high-market or whatever.
    Signets and Filter lands just aren't very good, if you/your deck tend to want to leave one mana open for Swan Song or other one-mana-instant interaction. So you need to keep that in mind. But if your deck is full with terminates and other two mana-removal instants that don't require two of the same color, you're golden.

    This is great timing, I’ve been finally making myself learn about utility lands for my Osgir deck, where I’m currently running 11. I’m also running a forsaken monument in there, so anything that can generate colorless mana is extra good. I grabbed a filter land, a pain land and a spire of invention as some fixers, and they can all make a wingding for the monument to increase. I usually only run 1 or 2 utility lands, and my Rienne, Angel of Rebirth deck has 0 because it needs so many pips to play all those multicolored creatures. I should probably add a Kessig Wolf Run, though.

  • @SWNJim
    @SWNJim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still like Emergence Zone as my #1 utility land. Yes, it costs 1 to activate and yes, you have to sac it, which turns a lot of people off, but it’s a Vedalken Orrery effect on a land THAT CANNOT BE REMOVED once activated. You crack it during an upkeep, even an opponent’s, and that entire turn you are playing at instant speed, including the end of turn when people have long forgotten about it. People routinely forget that it’s in play too, so you can always activate it to play a permanent when you normally wouldn’t. Have some awesome sorceries?Now they are instants.

    The discussion on blood moon gives me an idea for a custom MTG card:
    1R(?, could be 2R, but I'm not sure, since it is somewhat more limited than Blood moon)
    Enchantment
    Lands lose all Static and triggered abilities. Activated abilities of lands cannot be activated, unless they are mana abilities. Non-basic lands gain "T: add R".
    Not sure if this is 100% the way I'd want to go about this, but essentially it would be a blood moon for utility lands. Wouldn't shut off stuff like Cabal Coffers, and it's not 100% the "blood moon for utility lands" because it can't differentiate between utility lands and color fixing lands for its "T: add R" ability, but it's as close as you could get without the cludgy awkward alternative solution of trying to do something like "Non-basic lands that have Static abilities, or which have activated abilities that are not mana abilities gain [...]". Alternatively, instead of the "Activated abilities of lands cannot be activated" part, you could do something like "Players can't pay costs to activate abilities of lands" which would shut down Cabal Coffers, et al, but would shut down fetch lands and filter lands (which honestly, I'm okay shutting down fetch lands, but I have a perhaps unwarranted affection for filter lands, so it wouldn't be my go to solution for this version)

    Shouldn't saying terrible dad jokes if you're not a father be considered a faux pa?

    Reliquary Tower is a very underwhelming card in non-Blue/non-Control decks.

      I run it in my Zegana deck just so I'm not wasting her massive card draw ETB.

    Basic lands FTW. Main reason being that utility or fancy fetch lands are expensive and don't feel good to purchase. If I'm spending 10-20 bucks on a card I want it to do something fucking cool, not just mana fix me or create a zombie or something.

    I think for Yuriko it makes sense. She's fast, and she aggressively needs a lot of *fast* colored pips and doesn't want too many lands due to a low curve. That invalidates a lot of utility lands as the majority either tap of colorless or come into play tapped.
