I just think of the period after my funeral, when my stepson and his partner need to come in and strip the house for sale. The thought of them finding my decrepit underwear, defunct tech and smelly shoes motivates me to get to them first!!

Funny story Shannon on the "Shop Your Own Home"...my preteen decided she wanted a "room makeover". We ended up buying NOTHING. I followed her process and the "makeover" involved removing a bunch of furniture and decluttering her things. She wanted less things and more space in her room. The only "new" items to her room were things we repurposed from elsewhere in the house. I'm a big fan of "shopping your home." 😊

I love that! That is exactly how I usually "redo" my home too. Once in a while I will add something or stop by the thrift store if I want to switch things up. But I LOVE to shop my own home first.

@@shannontorrens1It was so interesting for me to see that the makeover was a "make-under". We just dropped off a big bookcase to the habitat restore. She decluttered most of what was on it and no longer needed it. Same with a nightstand etc. The lessons are getting absorbed! ❤

One of the biggest compliments I received recently is how clean our home is. I was confused at first because the visit was unexpected and our house was in need of some dusting and other things 😅 However, the “cleanliness” was actually being referred to how clutter free our home appeared. This really shows how visual clutter impacts not only how we perceive our home, but how others perceive it when they walk inside.

    2. Find a place to donate/ sell the items
    3. Embrace space not stuff
    4. Ask “what would u get rid off?”
    5. Challenge urself
    - put the item away and see would u use it or not

Clutter blindness is so real. It is like noise pollution or light pollution. You get used to it and only realize how bad it is when you go somewhere dark and quiet.
I used to enjoy watching shows about organizing and small space living with unique or hidden storage spaces. Now I realize I don't need more storage, I need less stuff. Game changer. I watch decluttering videos now and it is inspiring. There is always one more thing(or ten) that can go. The items stuck in the back or the cupboard or tucked into the open floor joists in the basement (yes, I'm talking about the laminated map of the US I've been saving for no reason, rolled up and tucked into the floor joists, out of sight and out of mind). Good grief.
    Thanks for sharing.

We put the paint on fb marketplace and was gone by the end of the day.
This then had me rearrange our kitchen.
Today I reorganized my makeup vanity.
Next is office items that is stored in boxes from our move last year in April 2022 when we left Temecula Ca and moved out to East Tn.

Here are a few benefits I've found to owning less/being minimal
    1) "Seeing with new eyes what you no longer love bc clutter is gone" :
I decided to replace the 2 throw pillow covers in the LR bc they felt off somehow...too white, too monochromatic...and also didn't match the new rug ;)
I dropped them off an hr ago while on errands. In the past, I would have kept them for "just in case." New ones arrive tomorrow from Amazon.
I no longer have "clutter blindness" but instead, I have "clutter night vision."😅
    2) "Waiting & not worrying" :
I'd rather go without or wait....instead of holding onto or splurge-purchasing. I don't worry if the throw pillows are not covered immediately.
    3) "Being creative/frugal" :
I also love to shop my own home. Yesterday I switched a few plants around to suit their light preferences & the rooms felt different afterward😊

I usually target 1000 items to declutter per year… this year I’m already at 1400, as we welcomed a baby in May, so I’m even more ruthless when making selections. It also helped that I donated a bunch of baby stuff left from my daughter, that won’t fit my son. And we got many baby clothes from family, that I’m constantly giving back once no longer use. So we are in a zero purchase mode for the most part. Everyone should find the method that works for them and stick to it. It’s magic!!! We also do cloth diapering this time, so we don’t purchase all the tons of diapers and throw them out. This gives me a piece of mind and is very good objective to work towards in preserving the environment, and be gentle to the baby’s skin ❤

I liked that you talked about getting used to having more space because this was something a little challenging for me. One of the best things I've done for decluttering/not bringing more things into my home, is I tracked for six months every single item I decluttered and every item I bought. Another very inspiring video Shannon
I’m always inspired to declutter and let things go ❤
Now me and my family are enjoying all the open space in our apartment.
Every time we have company they always say that our apartment is so HUGE 😮
thanks to you Shannon for inspiring me ❤

i have items that annoy me but because they are my hubby's and its something he loves (like a grandfather clock that I don't like, don't need and don't want) we keep it because it makes him happy....its so frustrating sometimes...

Same, i would love to get rid of the grandfather clock , but it was a kit, that my husband put together. It unfortunately will never leave.

What a beautiful home you have Shannon
My husband and I have decided to sell our condo and buy a single family home.
We are paying off all our bills so that we will only have a mortgage, and beginning (my husband not me. I decluttered and downsized significantly when I moved from IN to SC🏝️8 years ago!)
New subscriber and love your channel
    Don’t know if I mentioned before I too had 3 boys!!!💕😊

Oh that's ok, my mom had said that plant looked dead before we started filming that day. I decided that it had outgrown that pot and switched it out for something else. =)

Off topic - I love the inlay in your kitchen counter. Are you going to keep/repurpose it when you remodel the kitchen?

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

My husband made that wood piece, most people comment that it looks out of place LOL. We will be keeping that, but I am imagining it hanging as art.

Great video again, Shannon. I like the "how does it make you feel." There are so many things I'd love to get rid of but can't due to animals and bf. Lol. I've been thinking of you with that storm that came through. Did you end up having any flooding or damage to your home or town?

I can understand the backlash of borrowing. If it's something you need in a pinch I can understand borrowing; but if you need to borrow it one more time, it's time to buy your own. I learned the hard way not to loan things.

    I am a minimalist.
How do I get people to stop giving me unwanted items/gifts?...

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  ปีที่แล้ว +4

When we decided to declutter and become more minimal I talked with my mom and my husband about gifts for the kids mostly because I didn't want a bunch of new clutter coming in. We decided to dial it way down to just a few things for Christmas. When it comes to birthdays and holidays for me and my husband we already don't do gifts unless we really need something. If I have a party I just say no gifts on the invite. When it comes to our extended family we decided no gifts quite a few years back because it was way to much work and everyone was happy to give up the gift buying. I guess it boils down to just saying I don't want any gifts and lets just do something fun instead =)

I take a photo of my room. For some reason, framing it in a photo allows me to see the clutter that I have become blind to. I'll take a picture of my grand dog, and see all the clutter in the background.

I've heard this so much. Yes can be frustrating. My husband has more things than I do, but thank God he is a neat and tidy person. He's the greatest when it comes to organizing. I don't have to clean his personal areas, he does, so I don't fuss about his belongings. When I told him I still feel like I have too much he jokes that I'm going for that prison cell look. 🤣

He should have “an office” where he can keep his stuff on shelves, desk, etc. This can be a separate room or corner of a room. 😊
