Hi, this is Kathy, Shannon's mom. I have to say that I am really enjoying reading all the comments and I'm amazed and happy to know that so many other women are doing many of the same things as me. I seriously thought I was the only one losing hair on my legs and it's crazy to hear that there are so many others like me. This just shows that we are all doing what's right for ourselves without being told how to act, but doing what is coming naturally. The media and social outlets usually only talk about younger women/people, and trends. These 465 comments make me feel like I'm normal and so many are feeling the same, and we are really very happy with ourselves. Enjoy!

I'm 68 and a few years ago noted the hair on my legs definitely wasn't growing like it used to. I bought an electric lady shaver and use it occasionally in warmer weather if I decide to paint my toenails. I normally don't even wear shorts except around the house and yard. I quit coloring my hair somewhere in my 50s and have cut my own hair for years. I've never truly been much of a social butterfly and have done my own thing pretty much my entire life. I love my good old Revlon lipsticks and will usually put a small pair of earrings on to feel feminine.

My simplified life list at almost 40
    1) I don't colour my hair and haven't since 23 - money saver
    2) I don't get regular haircuts. I time my haircuts for when I'm going to a special event and need a blow out 😂
    3) I don't "shop as a hobby" anymore and have drastically reduced my wardrobe
    4) As a family, we've decluttered thousands of items from our home - simplified home = simplified life
    5) Simplified schedule - I don't say yes to every invitation anymore to be a people pleaser
    6) I also don't wear makeup every day and when I do it's only a handful of products
    7) Yes - I haven't cared about what others think in years lol
    8) I make sure the other people in the family are participating in taking care of the house
    9) I've really reduced my time on FB & IG too. And trying not to get too sucked into TikTok 😂
    10) Yes I've given up unrealistic expectations too. And I make sure I'm not following any DIY accounts. I find some people are never content with what they have and others can get sucked into that thought process too.
    11) Simplified holidays are a game changer and when you can get family to reduce the gift giving 😂
    12) I was shocked when my husband wanted to declutter our coffee maker - but I think we're moving to an aero press which is smaller
    13) I'm also better off sleeping in a bit rather than get up super early. People should follow their natural rhythms
    14) I don't wear any jewelry either. Not even my wedding ring.
    15) Just live the life I want to live

Plus, the endless violence we are exposed to via the news, etc. It's exhausting and raises the blood pressure! A simple and calm life is best for good health. Love seeing the two of you together. And I don't have to deal with hair salon drama 🙄 "Other people's opinions" is a big one for me to work on - thank you Shannon! You two are so blessed and a blessing to many!!

I'll be 60 years in January - so much your Mum says resonated! I don't wear make-up, colour my (greying) hair, care less about other's opinions. Having chemo helped my priorities - a lot of body hair is less/ finer/ absent, I realised (from going bald) how great I look with less hair (or none!) Plough your own furrow, don't look to what others expect.

Another 67 year old here (from the UK)! I love your mum and identify with her so much! Ageing isn't a bed of roses, but it's also very liberating. The things you cared about when you were younger no longer seem important - like looks, etc. Of course, other things DO become important, like looking after your health. Any bad health choices you made when you were younger will catch up with you when you're older. I'm very glad I never smoked, but I did put on weight over the years. I'm now actively reducing my weight and am feeling the benefits. Like walking uphill without pain, or feeling like I'm having an asthma attack! That's one reason why I cook from scratch, so I can control what I eat. Please tell your mum how lovely she is. She looks great and doesn't need make-up!

A really big THANK YOU, to both of you for helping me start to declutter my home! Really you did that!!!! (And boy did I need too!) I have binged watched all your videos and shorts over the past 2 weeks, and it's just as if you are here with me every step of the way. Having turned 70 years young this year, I've got a 'lot of cr@p' to sort through!!! Yeah, not having to shave legs were one of the plusses of the menopause, not wearing make-up, not colouring hair, not cooking big meals, flat comfy clothes and shoes, going to bed and getting up when you want, and yes, getting rid of most 'friends' too!!! Oh, I never gave a 'beep' whatsoever what anyone thought about me anyway! Keep up the excellent work and more videos please (I'm only 2 weeks in!) Love, Goldie. ps Your garden is looking great!

I’m turning 52 on Sunday. A lot of these things I already implemented into my life. Absolutely no news. It gives me anxiety. My husband and I sold our 4 Br 3 ba home 2 yrs ago for a 1000 sq. ft apt and I haven’t missed it at all. I haven’t let go of my hair color yet. I’m late to this party, but in the last couple of years, I have been slowly going in the same direction! Thank you for ‘permission’ to make my life easier. It’s hard not to feel guilty for my generation of ‘homemakers’ but I think it’s time to give myself a break already!! 🙋‍♀️👍🥰‼️

I’m still working on not taking on too much with the cats. Lol. It’s better tho. Most of them are pottying out in the back yard now. The “whinies” about the “good food” is a bit harder to ignore at times tho. 😅😅
I’m 55 and I still want to have fun with funky punk hair colors from time to time tho. It’s healthier than the permanent colors also. More like Rit dye, except it’s for hair. The only hassle is that it’s messy at times. Lol. So I do it when I’m feeling it and I don’t bother when I’m not feeling it. So I’m looking forward to it actually showing up Bcuz now my hair is still too dark. I get a pro cut about once a year.
As a single, I stopped caring about dating or finding a mate. Lmao. I find it to be way easier and far more peaceful without so much stress. (Speaking of accepting yourself. The world thinks we all need to mate but I now just think that is a load of BS myself lol). Is it menopause? Idk but I just don’t care. I like having things my way and doing what I want when I want without any flack or having to compromise all the time. And certainly not having to “tend to” anyone else (well except for the cats. You can’t really ever get out of the cat mafia tho once you’re in. Ha ha).

Coloring my hair - I started it in my early 40's, had a government office job, and needed to "look the part" back then. Once I retired, I don't color as often, no longer every 8 weeks, now only 4 times a year, right before my birthday and major holidays. It does grow out in between, but no longer care. Your mom has a great shade of gray and it looks very good on her, she wears it well!
Hair Cutting - OK, mom, how about a demonstration video on how you cut your hair? I would love to see it and do a better job of cutting mine instead of the whack job I currently do.
Make-up, also stopped that when I retired. Just moisturizer unless it's a special event, then some concealer and powder foundation.
Cooking - I'm so with you on No Cooking, it's a four letter word as far as I'm concerned. Never enjoyed it, it's more like a chore. Back when I was married, he cooked, I did the clean up. Now I just do very simple stuff, I'm vegetarian so that eliminates a lot of cooking too.
I agree with so many of the other things you both mentioned, no holidays at my house, either.
I stopped sending Christmas Cards years ago, everyone can connect daily on Face Book or other platforms if they want, was such a waste of time and money, people just throw them away.
This was a fun video, I love watching you and your mom interact, you both had fun doing it. P. S. I'm 71, no more frills!

I’m 63 and don’t have any leg hair either lol. I have one necklace I never take off. I only wear my wedding ring when I go out. I stopped wearing earrings during the pandemic because of masks. Also my hair is really long and curly so earrings get caught in my hair. I only go out a few times a week and my car is parked under a tree so it’s usually kind of dirty lol. We’re empty nesters but I like to cook food for 2 or 3 days at a time so I don’t have to cook as often. I also have no problem eating cereal for dinner. I would love love to simplify the Christmas holiday and stop buying gifts for my brother, his wife, his three children, their spouses, and now they are all having children. I have like 6 nieces and nephews. And I have one son and one granddaughter. So his family way out-numbers mine, and I do not want to spend money on the people that I rarely see. I cannot get them to stop buying gifts for me. I have asked and told them not to, but they still show up with all smiles and all proud of themselves for what they got me. Really ?? I have resorted to not getting them anything at all. Absolutely nothing. So I'm opening their gifts while they watch. How awkward. Why does family do this to each other ? Is this a boundary problem ? it feels like it's going against my wishes, shaming and guilting me into continuing this gift giving thing, and I want out ! Can you do a podcast on this subject ? family and boundaries ?

Hello, this is a tough situation. I would just be very blunt. I would probably say that while I appreciate you thinking about me with the gifts, I am trying to be minimal. I would love it if we could get together and have fun without doing gifts. This way, we all save lots of time and money and can have a stress-free holiday. Now if they still got me gifts I would probably insist on opening them once they left and then just donate them. Then it wouldn't be as awkward. (of course, this is just how I would handle my relatives, but we are all very blunt. Sometimes on the invite, I state no gifts)

    Things I’ve quit:
    Quit buying gifts for adults
    Quit using credit cards
Quit dying my hair just before my 40th bday
Quit all social media several years ago
    Quit explaining myself
Quit feeling obligated to say yes
Quit making plans with people who are always late
Quit doing favors for ungrateful people
Quit taking other people’s attitudes personally
Quit trying to reason with people
Quit caring if someone liked me or getting bent out of shape if they don’t like me.

I also realised the importance of taking time to just sit and talk with our youngest son who is 31 and has autism. No screens. No tv. No rushing off to do jobs. I just sit and give him 100% of my attention. I have found that decluttering helps him cope better, and even encourages him to try and sort his own room out.

At 72, I recently went through all my jewelry and accessories and passed most of it on. Not having children to pass things to and not wanting to leave a lot for whoever has to deal with my "stuff" after I am gone really impacts my desire to do Swedish death cleaning. This fall I will go through photos and sentimental things. Less make up or none, simple clothing, and minimal jewelry all make life easier and more enjoyable.

Have to tell you that I’m doing the same. But I’m having a hard time getting house items out of the house. My D-I-L actually wants loads of stuff but she’s 2500 miles away and prefers to ‘save’ it in my house. Not so perfect for my intentions of cleaning out the house. Regarding photos/letters/cards, geez, I’ve been working on them nearly nightly since January and I still have so much to go through. Got rid of duplicates, blurred , landscapes, about 50% but it’s really really tough. Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed.

Hire a small storage locker on behalf of your D-I-L and put all 'her stuff' in there. And congratulations on what you have done so far, keep going! Love Goldie X.@@chloeruegg2352

I figure I’m too old to waste time with those who don’t deserve my attention or time. Hope that doesn’t sound harsh. I agree with a lot of what both you ladies are sharing. 😁 When it comes to not cooking dinner and you have kids I worked into it this way: When my three boys were in their early teens I told them one night a week would be “Make your own” and Wednesday night would be each boy was to take a turn making a dinner for the whole family that they wanted to eat (within reason) but I would be standing by to teach them how to do it. As they got older and more involved in activities where they might not be home at dinner time, it was reasonable for them to either eat the leftovers or make something for themselves. Same went for laundry - I would teach them how the machines worked and they would do their own. They were also required to help clean the house alongside me and taught how to mow the lawn…required knowledge for soon to be adults. 😁👍🏻 Also, sharing in these chores is a requirement to being part of a loving family. In their 30’s now and are all self sufficient and helpful members of society. 😍

I love your comments. I also gave my teenage children a night to cook dinner for the three of us. I was close by, and they got to pick anything from my well-stocked kitchen. If they asked me a question, I would answer with " what does the box say? " , or " what does the recipe say?". So they learned how to cook and they both turned out to be much better in the kitchen than me. Same for laundry. This is how you sort, if you don't want to ruin your clothes. Here is how much detergent. The machine does the rest. Easy peasy. They were both responsible and helpful and turned out to be excellent humans. My two favorite people in the whole world. And I get to know that I prepared them for the outside world, knowing that their momma was always there and on their side. Sometimes letting others figure it out, or make a mistake along the way, is how best to support them.

If I feel like it, I might cook something and invite my two single kids. Or not. I've even gotten to the point of not going to other's homes if invited, if the weather is bad or I just need to be alone. Especially if it is family that lives farther away and I just don't want to do four hours of driving for a hectic dinner. Haven't exchanged gifts of any kind for years. So much less stress.

Two ladies that speak my language ! I'm 64 years old and I too have experienced many changes and without even thinking about it - we all change over time. What really stuck out was when you both voiced that you don't care as much about what other people think, you tend to do your own thing which is liberating ! Also, I'm just eating what I want and when I want as well. I don't go shopping out of boredom or buy things on a whim, only buy when I need something. I'm striving to live with minimalism but that is a conscience decision and I have down-sized a lot but still have a ways to go with that. Shannon I love your channel and love when you and your mother get together. You are both very down to "earth" and I really appreciate that. See you in your next video !
