    Great video, been an SRO for 3 years in Miami. You are so right about the magnitude of impact you can make. I believe the job makes you a better parent as well.

      I really appreciate it! And I agree about the parenting aspect, 100%. Be well, and do great! I'm speaking at the SRO conferences in Tennessee and NC this summer. Hopefully I can land a speaking gig at a FL SRO conference.

    I am currently working as a Deputy Sheriff inside the jail. Becoming a School Resource Officer is one of my goals after I complete mandate very soon.

      Awesome! As I mentioned, it was never on my radar, but when I did start in it, I was surprised how much I liked it since patrol was off the table for family reasons. I hope you get it soon. Make a good impact! 💪

      @@The10CodeMindset yeah I know what you mean. I use to work crazy hours with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice and it almost took a toll on my marriage. It was almost like I spent more time at work than I did at home with my own family.. I appreciate the experiences received while working there but I didn't see myself working there in the long run.

    I haven’t watched the video but when I had seen the title I got excited as officer Medlin was my resource officer a couple of years ago. During that time my views of my local police officers changed and because of him I have gotten to meet other awesome officers. You are the best!

    Yes, very true. You are right, pairing with the students is most important. This means students will see you as a person they like to talk to, and that is most important. they will build trust and look to you for advise. I work in many schools and there are officers in all the buildings. Definitely building connections with students will also have an impact in their community outcomes . Working police at school opens opportunities to detect problematic students and will help with early detection of prospective juvenile delinquents and will open the opportunity to implement proactive strategies to help those students before entering the criminal system. One of the most noble profession is a school police officer. I have seen them intervene at school when problems occur, and also have seen them when they are pairing well with the students, they are a blessing to our school systems. Thanks for sharing. Regards, God Bless you!

      I appreciate your insightful and sincere comments. The SRO's do have an advantage in that they can build rapport with students. It's much harder to do that on patrol because of calls and other activity.

    I worked on the street for 12 years and I'm now an SRO now. I absolutely love it. Yes it's tuff, I try to get through to young kids who don't understand the harsh reality of life. However, you got to be there to guide them. Let them know there is more to life than the silly antics of school. I love each one of those kids and would lay down my life for those kids. I know they love me the same. The endless fist pumps and high fives that I get, let me know the thing care just as much about me as I do for them. I'm truly blessed to be in this position. I work in the busiest elementary school in my school district but I have no problems with that. I look at it as a challenge. Kids that didn't want anything to do with me when I first started, are now coming up to me and asking me what's on your duty belt? How long does it take to be a cop? I want to be a cop when I grow up. That is outstanding. They get to see me break up fights, they get to see me talking to kids who are having a hard day, they get to see that I'm just an ordinary guy. That means more to be than all those years I worked on the streets.

      Can't thank you enough for sharing that. It is amazing how much of an impact the SRO's can make on the youth, from elementary through high school. And then needless to say the school's need the armed protection as well. Keep it going!

    Great video bro , I have had some bad times when I went to school, I didn't like most of the school resource officers, I have worked some school events as a security guard, I made sure that I tried my best to set a good example,

      I forgot to mention it in the video. When you get to your school, email the teachers and ask when you can come by and introduce yourself to their class. I did this when I started at a high school and after I told the students my primary purpose to protect, enforce when needed, and mentor…. I told them I liked doughnuts and was a Cowboys fan. It got some “feedback”. 😄

    The school resource officers in my city seem to refuse to wear body cameras when they're on the school property. I'm not happy with that is there any special reason they don't wear them that I should know about?

    • @The10CodeMindset
      @The10CodeMindset  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s odd, as I darn sure wore mine and am glad I had it. The only thing I can think of is juvenile privacy laws but I don’t believe that constitutes not wearing them entirely. Having said that, whenever there was an incident that we had to keep strictly confidential to uphold juvenile law and policies, we just tagged the videos as very restricted.
      Sorry I don’t have a definite answer for you as I don’t have much to go off of.

      This is going to seem so simple you will think I'm mocking you but I am not. The best thing I liked was when I student came up to me and extended their hand for a handshake and said, "Hello Officer Medlin, I'm 'such and such', nice to meet you." Give it a go, and strike up a conversation. Do good!
