I'm a year on and absolutely love it. I also work in a department that allows us to be proactive which makes the job more exciting. I understand I'm still in the "honeymoon" phase and over time the excitement may diminish but we have guys with 15 plus years on who are still getting after it and having fun. Like most places if you hang out with the shift slugs you'll probably develop their habits and that "this job sucks" mentality. There are negatives and most come from within the judicial system it seems but you have to learn to accept it. The advice I'd give those interested is to get some life experience first. The job isn't going anywhere especially in the current climate. Work other jobs first, specifically ones where you deal with the public. Learning how to talk to people is the biggest skill you'll use on this job. How you talk to someone dictates so much. You can talk your way into a car, you can calm a tense scene or you can do the exact opposite and not get in that car or end up fighting when you didn't need to. There are times where it doesn't matter what you do and you're not going to get the outcome you want, you just have to accept that and move on. Pick the right agency for you. Do ride a longs with more than one. These aren't the days where you have to accept the job you get. So many departments are short staffed, even the good ones. Ask what their retirement is, what their shift schedule is, and other opportunities for growth within the agency. Work at the agency that best suits you and your family. Money isn't everything. There's cops making six figures who are miserable. In the end you never really know if this job is for you or not until you actually do it. If it's not for you then move on, there's no shame in that. Trying is more than what most people in society do and at least you'll know. If the job is for you then find what you like and work towards being better at it whether it's interdiction, DUI, or just being a good all around patrolman.

If you're a petty officer please listen to this guy. The cop ego got in the way and he was butt hurt because the guy was helping the people by letting them know about the road pirate. He was being petty and retaliated with tickets and cuffing the guy.

That man did exactly what you want someone to do, even accepting a ticket for a law regarding unauthorized emergency lighting for flashing headlights.

It would've been helpful to give us some examples of this toxicity.

Sometimes I did thinking of becoming a cop in the States, maybe for sheriff office. But I'm not American. Probably gonna apply for citizenship. My granddad used to be a cop in my country after WW2.

There is no such law i believe in any state that flashing your hi beams to warn people that police are running radar. Im a retired police officer, and I've talked to numerous state police, county police and municipal police officers about flashing your hi beam to warn people about police running radar. Not signing your registration is not a crime. This cop is an arrogant idiot !

In my state you dont sign registration unless you're selling it to another person.

A traffic court judge convicted him of that"special restrictions on lamps" nonsense or whatever he ended up calling it, just so you know. Who cares that the law specifically mentions an exception for warning other drivers, why would that matter? If he is still pursuing civil action, it will probably take another 4 years before we hear anything about it, but so far everyone involved investigated themselves and decided they were all heroes, shockingly enough.

This cop was definitely bullied in school now he has a little bit of authority he has swollen head syndrome at its finest and an ego bigger than the Soviet Union times two. He’s an absolute clown.

Command Staff without legitimate law enforcement experience

Separation of powers gives officers discretion not to enforce BS laws, regulations, ordnances, etc. There are those by the book cops and cops with different philosophies I get it. But your job should really be to protect and serve as well as to enforce the law. But you get caught up in every petty thing. You will never have time to do anything else.

Once the ticket has been printed the traffic stop has finished. Any further detainment is illegal. Flashing headlights is a 1st amendment protected activity. This guy is getting a payday. Utah doesnt even sign their registration. Its just a printed piece of paper
