    How To Use Octodomes/Octo Boxes For Beginners: A Photo Lighting Tutorial
    By Jay P. Morgan
    In this Slanted Lens lesson we are going to take an in-depth look at 8 sided soft boxes or Octodomes. Each manufacturer has its own name; Octobox, OctaBox, Octa Softbox, Octa Bank, or Octodomes. I used Photoflex Octodomes to make all of the comparisons and demonstrations for this video so that will be our reference point www.photoflex.com.
    I wanted to explore what makes an Octodome different from a Soft Box. What is the area of coverage and quality of light. We put them through the riggers to answer these questions and ended the lesson with a few simple 2 light set-ups using Octodomes. I gained a better understanding about their place in my lighting arsenal and when they are better to use than soft boxes. Keep those cameras rolling and keep on click-in!

  • @eksine
    @eksine 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm pretty sure that the small octabox and large octabox covers the same area at 6 feet because of the shape of the octabox. If you replace that with a reflective umbrella, the edges are angled out more, meaning a more obtuse angle. They say it's about the size of the light relative to the subject, but this video proves it's also about the shape of the modifier

    I have no experience with the PLM. I would guess its a great product. I know I have used the Octbanks by Photoflex for years and they have always given great light and show very little signs of wear. The face stays white and does not yellow. I've heard with some boxes and Octo's thats a problem. Good Luck.

      There are a couple of options. Bounce the light into a V-flat so you can control it. Or, bounce the light into a white wall or ceiling, but you don't have quite as much control as a v-flat.

    Not sure why you discuss the background light effects and falloff. When you move the model six feet away from the background, as is a usual recommendation in the studio, what happens then with the octadome?

    I’m confused . If a larger light makes softer shadows, how can a large light cover the same area as a small light at the same distance? How can the size of light affect shadows but not the area of coverage ? What is it about the size of light that makes the shadows softer? This is assuming same distance from the subject

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The area of coverage at 8 feet on most modifiers is roughly the same. But when you reduce that to 6 feet a larger modifier wraps around the subject and fills in the shadow. When you reduce it to 4 feet even more so.

    Good and helpful tutorial... BUT. What was your hurry? Most of the Slanted Lens video's I've watched have the same problem... You shoot through the video as if you have a pressing appointment coming up and you have to get this video done as quickly as possible. Also, You're talking about the 7' Octodome/box, but I didn't see that box in your video. Same situation in other demonstrations. What's the hurry? And, let's SEE what you're talking about. Thanks!

    You mentioned you use both the Canon 7D and 5D. Why use both a crop frame and a full frame camera? (Actually, since you obviously have an unlimited budget for equipment, why use a crop frame at all?)

    • @Pepingco
      @Pepingco 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      He is also a sports photographer as well as a studio photographer - he uses the 1.6 crop for that extra reach in the field. I think I also heard him say that crop frame cameras have a higher synch speed than Full frame (the 7D does 1/250 whereas the 5D does 1/200)
      Mostly, If I remember correctly, he did write in a blog that said it was important to have the necessary tools for the job - and if that means having a crop for extra reach with telephoto lenses, then that's what you use. Full Frame doesn't mean better sometimes - Ive seen photographers who swear by Full Frame in the studio only to have the 7D in their backpack when they shoot sports. It is more common to see crops at sport (or at the very least top of the range full frames like the D4s or 1Dx... Its rare to see the 5DmkII or mkIII in a football match - the fps is good but not great as well.

    • @MrJueKa
      @MrJueKa 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pepingco
      I have a Nikon D700 Full-frame camera with a normal synch speed of 1/250 and there are other Full-frame DSLRs with the same synch speed - so that´s not the point.
      The most important fact to decide which camera is more usefull for shooting sports is the maximum continuous shooting speed (shots/second) - the higher the better. That´s why one rarely sees a 5D.

    • @Pepingco
      @Pepingco 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrJueKa Ive made money shooting with a 3fps camera. FPS means nothing - speak to any professional sports photographer and we rarely shoot in large bursts. I have my camera set to 8fps but the most I shoot is 2-3 shots during high action. Most of the time, Im still waiting for the moment and shooting one maybe 2 frames.
      For sports and wildlife its always reach and AF speed, accuracy and tracking - not fps. FPS is nice to have but if you look at any of the cameras used on the field, its cameras with reach, and AF ability. Its one of the reasons why a lot of new Olympus is releasing a lot of 300mm lenses as they offer reach and lighting AF for the price.
      Exceptions are D4 and 1D, but they are expensive options with little compromise.
      My original point was to show a range of reasons why someone wants to have multiple bodies. I still use my 5D3 and 7D and I plan on getting an Olympus soon for the times 300mm Canon lens cant get that reach as I normally shoot on a corner of a field. I also use my Leica for the times I am allowed into the locker rooms and for post game interviews

      Hi John, Thanks for the feedback. This lesson was from a period in our history when we were a bit heavy handed with the music tracks, but I believe we've gotten better with balancing the levels on background music. Glad it didn't scare you away!

    Next time you decide to destroy a camera drop me a line, I could put it to better use... such a waste of a good camera.

      With flash 1/60th is more than fine. His pictures are plenty sharp. Know what you're talking about before you spout nonsense on the man's channel.
