      Note to self...don't buy that brand softbox.

  • @inmaginej
    @inmaginej 8 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    Rather than trying to mount the softbox onto the strobe, set it face down on the floor and remove your strobe from your boom and mount it to the softbox... it is easier to remount both units to the boom than to mount the softbox to the strobe while the strobe is on the boom.

    • @AndresCuervoArt
      @AndresCuervoArt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +jason inman It might work for small light modifiers that mount to the strobe and not the boom, but for huge and heavy lights i.e. Mola euro or Mantti + Profoto B1 or D1 heads that require counterweights, its much more safe and easy to mount in steps.

    • @inmaginej
      @inmaginej 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Andres Cuervo yup... only for the little ones... but when the softbox is mounted to the stand or boom you don't have the same difficulties... it is easy to manipulate just the strobe head to where it mounts because it is small and easy to handle... as opposed to the big awkward softboxes etc... which are hard to hold, manipulate, and get a good view with all at once.

    Thanks for this informative video...i have a soft box that i use for occasional shoots...then i came across about these beauty dishes and suprised about the ease of use. Btw, can i use just the beauty dish without any additional flash and still produce good portrait results? I still dont have a flash or will use one anytime soon. Or will a flash will add more than with no flash single diffuser portrait photography? (Newbie here btw). Thank you.

    Hi Tony,
    So you mentioned about the size of the light source. In this video is a lot bigger than the beauty dish. I'm just wondering how much difference will it show if you use the similar size softbox compare to that beauty dish?
    Maybe try with only one (the main) diffuser as well. :)

    Using a grid with a soft box helps to focus the light a lot more.
    I was surprised how hard it was to fit your soft box to the light.
    I started off with Profoto systems and they are so easy to use. I manage it by myself all the time. It just slides over the light and you flip the catch to secure the soft box to the light and your all set.
    I do need to try a beauty dish at some point. I just fell in love with soft boxes and the light they produce.
    I have to say I have also been massively impressed with the massive umbrellas you can get. Have you ever used them for studio photos?
    I don't use profoto umbrellas as they are priced to high. Local camera store in Edinburgh has its own brand version and they are about 10 times less.

    Great video, but on a C stand with boom you place the sandbag (on the one 'upper' arm) on the same side (contrary to your intuition) as the strobe . This was an advice of Daniel Norton in one of his videos of Adorama, I checked it and he was right. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you did not do this in your video.

    Would you suggest using the octabox over the beauty dish for corporate headshot? Or vise versa? These images need to look nice and professional, but not dramatic and fashion-forward. Thanks!

    Tony, is that the Cowboy Studio boom you recommend in your Buying Guide? It looks more solid than the pictures on amazon. Thanks!

      James Washer No, clearly I need to update that in the Buying Guide :). The Cowboy Studio boom did work for a couple of years, but it did eventually bend and give up, so I finally bought a real C-stand.

      Tony Northrup Thanks! I'm looking for a real C-stand so I look forward to an update to the Buying Guide. When you update the Guide do you have release notes that shows what has been updated?

      Tony Northrup Thanks, very nice video as always. Can you please elaborate a bit on the C-stand you are using? I am looking for a boom and I'd love to hear more about it.

      James, I'm with Tony. Over the years we realize that the cheaper, lighter C-stands are flimsy and break down (not that it's all bad if you're okay replacing them and like the convenience of lightweight gear). Yet it's also comforting and make you feel more professional using higher-end stands that are super-solid, last for 20+ years and look great. I love the Matthews Avenger and 765140 (has locking pin) models. And at times it's nice to have the 10.5 foot height.
