  • In the monastery of Citeaux, founded by the monk Robertus, the rule of Benedictus was again applied strictly and faithfully. Bernardus of Clairvaux (12th century) lived in this monastery and became so influential in his time that he was named 'the second founder of the order'. The new order, called Çistercians was a reaction to the lack of discipline in monastereies. In 1833 the abbey of Bornem, named after Bernardus, was founded in Flanders. The nuns of the convent of Kolen-Kerniel, who are completely self-supporting, live according to the Cistercian ideal.

Had the privilege of visiting Kloster Korniel in 2010 as part of a group tour sponsored by the Crosier Order (Crutched Friars) as part of the festivities surrounding the 800th anniversary of their Order. Wonderful to see this...

Thomas Merton was a Trappist - hard core Cistercians - which was a surprise since he was so open to the truth in all faiths. Blessings to all and peace on your path.

When the peoples of the realized what their TRUE values are in life again, then there WILL be a rebirth of all these sacred Religious Orders . Help us all, St.Bernard.

Not simplicity but aristocracy behind a mask.
