ABC Railway is indeed a subsidiary of the Wheeling and Lake Erie that originally started out as the Akron Barberton Belt Railway before WLE soon purchased it afterwards.
Ah, home sweet New Castle Subdivision. I've got fond memories of watching the Coke Express trains running along that as a kid. A shame traffic along the line has dropped so heavily over the past decade or so. It used to be a good 40 or so trains a day compared to the 20-30. Strangely, I haven't seen or heard anything of HUs running along the line, either.
Also, Wheeling & Lake Erie is the parent company to ABC Railway. I worked for the Wheeling as a conductor for a little while. During conductor school in Brewster, we had a guy in class for the ABC Railway. Both railroads share the same training. However, at the time I was on the Wheeling, the ABC guys had a better deal. They made a flat $240/day and mostly worked daylight shifts M-F with occasional weekend extras. The Wheeling guys made less and had no life at all. Totally backwards...
you came to my neck of the woods, i used to live in akron and there were many tracks next to the firestone company and i used to walk and run there with my dogs. I used to live in cuyohoga falls, and used to watch the trains as I walked under the portage trail bridge, once I almost got run over at night time trying to cross those tracks because the noise of all that traffic and the lights on the distance I could not see the moving light I always looked for, I started to cross the tracks and i heard the horn.scared me to death.
Nice coverage of my hometown Jordie. Thank you. Those stone cars might have been spotted at Osborne's right next to Brittain Yard. Yes, I love EMDs.
Love the railroad
I lived a block from that opening shot with the pedestrian bridge in Kenmore
That radio convo at 2:25 was the funniest thing I've heard on the radio in a while. What radio code were you using?
