    Hope you liked the video and our start in installing our water maker! There is a lot more to come once we get our plumbing installed.
    Not only are we building a boat but for this video we went all out learning how to make the All of the animations and illustrations (which took an extra week to teach ourselves 😅)
    Hope you like the results! Maybe we try in after effects next time.l because that was a lot of work! 😂
    Let us know what you think! And if you have any experience or tips about water makers, let us know!

    We have a 27ft Antrim design sloop, due to her size we decided on a RAINMAN portable AC 140, 26-37gph, 115vac or 230vac, 1250wat which has 2 x 40" membranes and cost $5,080 with shipping. Having built this boat from Carbon fiber and racing her in the Bay Area, the cost of a water maker did not permit us an advantage. Again, enjoyed this episode and we hope to see you both on the water soon.

      At $7K for purification it can hardly be considered free , never mind the cost of maintenance , which by itself exceeds the cost of buying water on-shore at any location.
      Convenience , maybe.
      That's the only advantage if you have limited storage.
      My recommendation , get a large water holding tank or blatter if you want to get it closer to free.
      This vid is just deceptive click-bait.

    I love the way you marked your electric wiring. Most people are playing checkers when I am playing chess. Plants in big cities grow best because they get more carbon dioxide. If you burn plastic and return it back to the carbon that it was made from the Earth would be better off. I live in the Island City of Cedar Key Florida. WE have aero photos of this city from 1929 until today and the water level is the same. An electric-powered pressure washer produces 2000 psi if you turn down the pressure to 800 psi it is the same. If the bad boys try to board your boat and hurt you turn the pressure back up to 2000 psi with dingy fuel and they will have a bad day because these machines pump dingy fuel a long distance.

    Great video. We had a watermaker, but it failed after three years and we were too far away to get it fixed. We have 400l tanks, being so glad we can fill up in places that have good water, being the exception in Brazil, buying water in at the store, transferring it to our 20l jerry cans, taking it back to the boat. Normally we just fill up at the dock, but this is not possible in Salvador, Brazil.

      Thanks! We are weary of the longevity and maintenance of a water maker and will definitely be researching this. The products we chose is very interesting because it boasts that it has no complicated electronics. And looking at it in pieces, it’s true, the gauges are basic and the only electronic device is a small TDS monitor. The rest is made from replaceable parts that seem common enough. We’d be very interested to see what will happen and our honest review of it plugged in. We also will have two large tanks. Interesting that you have been able to fill up in many places during your travels! Can imagine that Brazil wouldn’t have this option, the water and sewage system here is not well made. And you must have a filter in your home.

  • @mazdarx7887
    @mazdarx7887 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The system placement looks very tight.
    Although the system is usually reliable, it is not uncommon to have to replace components.
    It don't take mush to screw up an osmosis membrane.
    I've seen filters fail, even when properly pickled.
    Come back from a vacation and find the system needs parts.

  • @lenwhatever4187

    Lucky us, we can just use a water tank. Most of the docks don't charge for water but the more interesting places we go do.... because It costs them to get that water either for fuel to pump from a well or to have it shipped in. I am ok with that. Sometimes smaller is better. making a smaller amount of water more often means fresher water, a smaller water maker, not having to worry about pickling (less maintenance costs). Should we ever get to the place we really want to go farther asea than around the Georgia Strait and Vancouver Island we will think about water making.... and probably a few feet more LOA :) Though not much. we are enjoying our little cabin on the water an immense amount even going across the sound for an hour or two to get to a place to anchor for the night. Keep it up, you guys are fun to watch. I might go less complex but our needs are not yours.

    You might want to put a mineral cartridge before your fresh water tank to put some minerals back into the water. You can get bone decalcification and demineralization by drinking too much reverse osmosis water.

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very good point. We had the same question about minerals and asked the owner of the company. They said that it wasn’t necessary to add minerals but we do wonder about the long term effects if that’s the only water we will consume. We will definitely look into this more. Thanks!

    would suggest some solar distillers or a manual unit in case of total system failure in the middle of the briny ocean

  • @marktanska6331
    @marktanska6331 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You do know that the wonderful system is available because many factories oil and plastics to produce this system for you to enjoy. I love what you are aiming to to and absolutely support your right to do it. No it is not green , water makers are not green. But they reduce plastic waste. Boating is not green, two people supporting home, living and travel is not green. China, one building housing 30000people is greener

  • @winstonwilliams4859
    @winstonwilliams4859 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    have you looked at engine heat distillation instead as both need a power supply?

  • @southernfriedkiwi7726
    @southernfriedkiwi7726 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I definitely lean more towards just having larger water tanks, with rainwater catchment from a hard bimini, and a small UV system for drinking water. The cost of these RO systems is pretty outrageous, not to mention how many points of failure that they have(and they all break, at some point). Plus, all of the filters and various other spare parts that you have to take with you. Add onto that the sheer amount of space that the installation eats up on your boat and I don't think that makes a lot of sense.

  • @lanetatom2701
    @lanetatom2701 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! We will be testing this and reporting back on our experience. We do know that it depends greatly on the quality of the water you are filtering.

    I find it interesting how the term "off grid" is used in all these types of videos. To my way of thinking, "off grid" means being totally isolated from connections with society and its communications nexi. In these cases it simply means being logistically self-contained. Odd thing, that.

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The definition of off grid in the dictionary is “not using or depending on public utilities, especially the supply of electricity.” So not being physically hooked up to utilities by wires, pipes or cables. Off-grid homes, and in our case a boat would therefore rely completely on their own energy sources and have their own supply of water.
      Though I do think we can consider different levels of off-grid - the extreme being isolation and total independence. However the base always starts with not using public utilities.

    "FREE WATER FOREVER" that is funny, nothing last forever, the membranes, the pumps, the pre-filters... you did not mention a TDS meter to check quality of your water, those are cheap... trying to jam all that plumbing and filters in a cabinet you will regret especially when it comes time to work on it...
