    Great job at cracking on with those boat jobs! There's always a to-do list, but it does get shorter and less overwhelming once you've owned the boat for a bit and dealt with the worst. You're doing amazingly.

    Keep being positive. Every morning and every evening, walk all around the boat and look at everything... doing a self-survey of the boat. Even though you don't know what you don't know, you will eventually be surprised what you do catch.

    I noticed on your list, there was something about "bilge pump hose." you may want to tend to that first, always make sure your pumps are working 100% of the time. After the boat springs a leak is a bad time to find out there is a problem with your pumps. Welcome to boating!!!! :-) Try not to run the water maker in the anchorage. Run it while you are soling. People tend to dump in the anchorage.

    • @patrickandmichaela
      @patrickandmichaela  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good advice all around! The bilge pump hose is a little kinked, but not blocked up. I went in and straightened it out, and water flows through it just fine, but eventually I would like to rerun a newer hose that wasnt kinked for a while, just for peace of mind :) Thanks for taking the time to comment, we really appreciate it

    Most schools would be affiliated with ASA, US Sailng and perhaps some other that I'm not familiar with. They all would have 3 level training courses. I've taken mine through J Would in Annapolis, working with US Sailing. They offer Basic Keel boat, Intermediate Keel boat and Cruising. All are combinations of hands-on practical lessons and exams. The Cuising part is literally a 7 day cruise with a captain, where the first 6 - is a learning/practice and 7th day - is the exam. At the end, you receive a log booklet with fancy stamps for each of the courses you've completed. That booklet makes you a captain and allows to charter boats anywhere in the would and be your own captain. Find a sailing mentor with actual experience of sailing. I would also suggest get a membership with a company doing boat deliveries, like offshore Passage Opportunities, and sail and ask questions and learn. This way you'll get sea sick and learn to deal with it, while someone else can take care of sailing part safety for all involved. Good luck and have fun by doing wise and right ⛵️

    After you Polish your brass , spray it with hear spray. It will keep nice and shiny for a very long time. Or you can use clear varnish. And you are very right about doing it more than once with the boat work. But after you learn how to do what you have never done before, you can do it once. But the first time it does takes a few times to get it right. So hang in there it will get better.
    So until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Aloha and cheers 🍻

It comes with a bit of acceptance, but once you believe in yourself to go give it an honest try, do some research, talk to people, there is nothing that can't be learned. And you are so right, the first time is the hardest in learning how to do it, then it's just building that muscle memory! Thanks so much for watching, and cheers ❤

  • @forgetn
    @forgetn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Look sailing can be unforgiving, and catamaran sailing even more so. You need to get a good sailing course there are too many things that cannot be guessed. Sure going to the Bahamas would be great, but don't cut too many corners. That rope that frayed should have been caught as soon as the outer cover became abraded. Simple stuff. You are lucky, modern technology will help, good systems and batteries will help, and a water maker is just about essential now. But take a good class on Catamaran sailing, it's essential. Finally, EVERYTHING on boats is expensive, and your lovely gas bottle may not conform to standards elsewhere...your shore power cable is the same. Take it slow and assume that the insurance company do this for very good reasons. Enjoy the ride Also if you think that cleaning an apartment is a chore, welcome to boat life, it is way way worse, everything rusts

      Appreciate you taking the time to comment! We agree, it is not something to take lightly. We definitely plan on getting well trained on our boat before taking it out on our own. Luckily we have experience living in a van and the previous owners were liveaboard, so we are pretty well equipped for some of the problems such as keeping it clean and doing our own maintenance / resource management, as well as having basically 2 of everything. I think we currently have propane bottles for EU / US / Bahamas :) It is going to be a learning experience but not something we are going into naively.

      Thalia really seems to be a boat that has been well cared for and loved by so many. So honored to get to keep her adventure going! We did indeed get her inspected before purchase! There are very few cases where I would say it is a good idea to buy a boat without getting it surveyed first. Our main concern was the condition of the hull so having a pro tap the whole thing out made us feel so much better :) Thank you for watching! We are so glad to have you here with us ❤

    WOW, you two are as green as they come. I look forward to watching you hit everything but the lottery(just kidding, well kind of). It's not rocket science and having lived the van life you won't be at each others throats because of the tight quarters. Get your ASA certification. I'm a licensed captain up to 500 ton and have all my sailing endorsements and that crap the insurance company usually wants, but I took the ASA course with my wife and it'll be handy for you for sure. 50 hours? When we took the course I bareboat chartered the boat and lived and slept aboard and he would come down every morning and we'd sail out of Key West every day for a week. We made a fun day out of it every day and I never caught so many lobsters and did so much snorkeling. He would go over lessons with my wife and she'd tack the boat and he'd ask who has the right of way when another sailboat was near us and take running fixes off of landmarks on the beach using the compass and finding her position in the geometric center of the triangulation on the paper chart etc etc.. It was a hands on course. He went over everything from knots to tying off a cleat and the must and shall of rules of the road and the pecking order of right of way etc. She would have to back the boat into the slip every day etc. I'd suggest you find a ASA certified instructor to do the same for you. I'm sure it'll be expensive but It's definitely what you'll need and fastest way to get the insurance company to believe you at least have a clue. Maybe the instructor can sail your boat to his or her location and you go through it locally so there's no commute for them. Get it done and get out there!

    The captains courses are all well and good especially for a couple with zero experience and suddenly finding themselves on their own vessel/home. Insurance company is going to be looking for those experience hours. Might pick a destination and then post up on one of the many sailing social media forums and see if you can find either a captain or if the insurance company will allow it, a sailor with a lot of experience willing to act as a captain. Second option and you might get away without having to pay a captain's salary, MAYBE. I have a profile on Co-boaters (as crew) and there are a lot of experienced sailors on that forum.

      Great. I'm just now catching up on the comments. Sucks that the insurance company required a certified captain. In this specific situation it's a prudent call though. I'm also a firm believer that things happen for a reason, even if we can't see it or may never even know of what was around the corner. Having been self taught, I have made EVERY single mistake there is when sailing, knock downs, multiple capsizes, running aground. I was just lucky to have learned those lessons operating day sailor sailboats and very little harm done except to my pride. Sorry for the long response.@@patrickandmichaela
