Phoenix is _WAY_ worse by your definition of "passive-aggressive". It was literally culture shock when I moved from the TCs to Phx. After too many years among those backstabbing schmoozers, I moved to central Vegas. It was culture shock all over again, because people here are much more like they were in MN 20+ years ago.
@@KaraCleveland Could it have changed since '98? I heard the term "Minnesota nice" even before I left MN, but never knew what it meant. In my experience at that time people were generally nice enough in the TCs and the out-state like Moorehead and Bemidji. And when they weren't nice, they were still genuine, not fake backstabbers. They were annoying for their settle-their-way-through-life attitude, but that never caused a problem. It just got tiresome to be around after a while. "Well, shit-yeah, if I can ice-fish a couple times a year, and fuckin'.... uh, not get bit by mosquitos, yeah, I guess I'm doing ok." Phoenix was culture shock because the Valley was (and likely still is) just _full_ of fake backstabbers. Meaning people easily offended for no reason who will never let you know about it, but you'll _hear_ about it from others. That almost never happened to me anywhere else, and it's almost never happened in Vegas. Just Phoenix, and it was consistent and it wasn't just me who noticed it. It was a very real thing, not imaginary, and happens among nearly all "ethnic" groups. Native Americans were ok, and native Arizonans were ok, as well as people from CA, TX and NY. The bad ones were who should have been "'my people" from MN and the upper midwest, but I almost never encountered them _in_ the upper midwest. One of the few I encountered was _from Phoenix._ No lie. I just thought he was an odd-ball and forgot about him until I moved to Phoenix where he was a common type. My theory is that people move to CA, Vegas and such to move _to_ things. People move to Phoenix to _run away_ from things. Certainly they run away from everything once they get there. I mistakenly went to Phx to move _to_ something, so there was a mismatch just from that. I don't think that's all of it, but I don't even have theories for the rest of it. What bugs me and makes me ramble is that I can't figure it out. BTW, the coolest on-average people I ever met were in western N Dakota. Ranchers, not bothered by anything, guns in every vehicle and no need to use them. Anyway, I certainly like the Vegas people better than Phoenix people, at least here in central Vegas and on Fremont and the Strip; it's no contest. The locals are like Minnesotans only without the settle-for-everything mentality. Visitors are here for a good time. All in all people are much more libertarian here in Sin City - go figure, huh? They are much more uptight and fake in Phoenix (and yet AZ is in some ways a more libertarian state). They are - or at least were - more DFL/democrat in the TCs (horribly statist, actually), but are open about what they stand for throughout the state. Bear in mind my date ranges are 1977 - 1985 in outstate MN, through 1998 in the TCs, up til 2017 in Phoenix. I definitely miss a lot of things about Phoenix and AZ generally, but oh well. Hmm, kinda sorry for writing a book here. 😐
@@KaraCleveland Hi again. I don't think the Phoenix backstabbers are so much actually trying to paint negative pictures behind one's back (if I cared about it more, I'd try to find a better term for them). I think they are just insincere backstabbing _types_ who act out their issue without any motive beyond that. I'm no psychologist or sociologist, but fwiw that's my guess at this point. I definitely think there is a difference between people who move somewhere to run from things vs those who run _to_ things. There are good ambitious things being done in Phoenix, but for a metro of 4.8 mil, you'd expect a lot more. Life is too short to spend it somewhere you don't like. Geographically and even for weather, I love Phoenix over the TCs and Vegas. It's a gorgeous southwestern area. But since I'm not a rancher or a hermit, I do need to care about the type of people who surround me. And the TCs and Vegas just have better more honest people on average. (Who'd ever think you could say that about Vegas?)
