Tarin: Tarin is essentially Mario. He likes mushrooms and is turned into a raccoon similar to his Tanooki form.
Goombas: Goombas appear as somewhat uncommon enemies found in certain 2-D scrolling sections. They can actually be defeated by landing on them too.
Chain Chomp: Chain Chomps appear in this game. The larger one is known as Bow Wow and actually behaves similarly to the classic Mario enemy by lunging and biting down nearby enemies.
Spinies: Spinies under the name Spiked Beetles are found as somewhat uncommon enemies. They attack by charging and can be defeated by flipping them over and hitting their soft undersides with your sword.
Shy Guys: These rare enemies are found in Bottle Grotto and the northern Face Shrine. They mimic Link's movements and can be defeated by spin attacking them in the back. They are called Masked Mimics in this game because of their masks and how they mirror how Link moves.
Boos: Found only in Bottle Grotto Boos chase Link and will warp away if attacked. If the torches in the room are lit the Boos become vulnerable to attack as they try to flee.
Yoshi Doll: It's a crochet doll of Yoshi representing his Wooly World appearance. This is exchanged for a ribbon.
Richard: Prince Richard is from a video game called For Frogs The Bell Tolls which was a GB game released only in Japan. The game served as somewhat of an influence in the development of Link's Awakening.
Bob-ombs: Known as Bombites in this game Bob-ombs appear in Key Cavern. The red ones will bounce around and explode. The green ones will countdown and chase Link before exploding.
Thwomps and Piranha Plants: A Thwomp serves as a roadblock and can only be defeated if ran into with the a Sword and Pegasus Boots combo. The Piranha Plant hides in stone pipes in certain areas popping out of them like in 2-D Mario games.
Pokies: The classic Mario cactus enemy appears as a rare foe found in Yarna Desert. It splits apart it's segments and bounces them around if attacked.
Gordos: Called Sea Urchins in this game they are found on Toronbo Shores. The classic Kirby enemies are notably weaker in this installment as they really just sit in place and are easily defeated with any weapon making them the weakest enemies in the game.
Thwomp: More traditional Thwomps appear in certain areas. They have a single eye but behave much like their standard Mario counterparts. Like the Pouncers from Wario Land they can be stood on top of but contact from anywhere else will damage Link.
Cheep-Cheep: Another Mario enemy. These just swim around in the water in certain sections but others may jump out of the water. You can also catch a glimpse of another Spiny drowning before Link enters the section with the Cheep-Cheeps.
Buzzy Beetles: The classic Buzzy appears in certain areas and are called Hardhat Beetles. They can only be defeated with either bombs or by knocking them into pits. A giant more mutated Buzzy called a Hardhit Beetle serves as an optional boss.
Bloopers: These enemies behave similar to their Mario counterparts propelling themselves forward and upwards after sinking for a while in a hope to catch Link off guard. A Goomba can also be seen here.
Wart: Wart from Super Mario Bros 2 teaches Link the Frog Song of Soul. He goes by his Japanese name Mamu but is otherwise largely the same character. Given the nature of the dream setting his appearance here doesn't feel out of place.
Henhouse Keeper: Sort of like how Tarin is Mario the Keeper is pretty much Luigi wearing the same colored green and blue as he does in the Mario series.
Thwimps: Thwimps from the Mario series appear as minor traps falling when Link gets close. They can be avoided with ease by dashing underneath them with the Pegasus Boots.
Kirbies: The Anti-Kirby enemy are basically evil versions of Kirby's species from the Kirby series and have the ability to even suck up Link and spit him out. They are pretty tough too as they are only vulnerable to Bombs or the Boomerang.
Lava Bubbles: Another classic Mario enemy. They leap out of the lava pretty much and can't be defeated. They are found in Turtle Rock. What appear to be frozen Lava Bubbles appear in Turtle Rock as well and can be melted with the Magic Rod. Also note the Goomba.
Hot Head: This is basically Fryguy from Super Mario Bros 2 under a different name. Strangely he has a new form exclusive to this game and no longer has his phantom mask like eyes.
Peach and Mr. Write: Mr. Write from Sim City serves as a character in the Trading Quest one of the items in the quest you give to him is a letter from Christine which actually has a picture of Peach from the Mario series.
Wind Fish Egg: The Wind Fish Egg resembles a Yoshi Egg having similar spots. It can also resemble even more the Mario Kart Double Dash version of a Birdo Egg.

I love how when ya attack anti-kirby, it just sounds like you're just tapping him instead! If you can hear closely, you can literally hear the tap noise every time! Plus, anti-kirby's just as cute as the original kirby!

Fun fact: originally chain chomps were going to be enemies in the zelda sereis, but they were scrapped and put into the mario series.

There is a Splatoon reference. If you talk to the Blooper statue it says that squids are hot stuff with the kids right now.
How is that a Splatoon reference? Nothing was added to this game other than graphics. That dialogue was in the original game, which came out way before Splatoon.

Also mr. write, is a simcity reference. The snes version made an advisor to honor Will Wright, the simicty creator. So an honor to maxis (now EA).
My theory: Since Koholint is a shared dream between Link and the Wind Fish, Mario's adventures are all just imaginary stories from this incarnation of link's mind. Support: the spiny-themed enemies also appear in Alttp and the oracle game, as well as chain chomps appear as enemies in alttp. All of these game feature the same incarnation of link.

This theory doesn't really go far. Oracle of Seasons and Link to the Past are both games that don't take place in any dream. Plus Link is in the Wind Fish's dream, they aren't sharing the dream. All the the Mushroom Kingdom counterparts existed before Link got shipwrecked.

Train could actually be Mario who is just retired, I mean he has the Italian accent and the mushrooms that he collects. Also the fact that he turned into a raccoon could be because he mistakenly use the tanooki power up.
Tarin got the raccoon power by eating a mushroom. Mario gets the tanooki suit by touching a leaf. But nonetheless the similarities are still significant :)

you know i wondered if they would sheap out on the Peach art in this game cuz they shafted the photograph side quest for no real good reason. turns out i was right and they just grabbed a pre-existing 3d render that looks alike a mod shoved it in here since it looks so unnatural with the rest of the game.

@@EndermanPierce I agree! I imagine his specials would focus heavily on bubbles. He could have bubble trap which would stun the opponent inside a bubble and another special could be concussive bubble blasts. Heck, to be canonical, he could take extra damage from Peach/Daisy's veggies, and veggie-based food could have the adverse effect on his health. XD
