I like the contrast of Vader telling Luke "You don't know the power of the dark side", between this film and the previous one. In the Empire Strikes Back, Vader said it as a means of tempting Luke with greater power, but here he's admitting that he's a slave to its influence.

When Leia said, "I know. I've always known" she didn't mean it literally. She wasn't aware of her lineage until that moment when Luke revealed it to her. What she meant by that line is that she had always known that she and Luke were connected somehow but wasn't sure what it was until that moment. Also, Vader had no clue he had two kids until Luke's thoughts gave it away. You'll find out why later on. And Luke did save his father, he brought him back to the light side in his last moments. He wouldn't have survived his injuries so redemption in death was the ultimate salvation.

Boba Fett didn't deliver Han to Jabba right away. Darth Vader stole Han back to try and lure Luke out again, to no avail.
The original ending had just the Rebels celebrating on the Forest Moon (with a different song) and Sebastian Shaw as Force Ghost Anakin. The 1997 Special Edition was edited to show celebrations across the galaxy on Tatooine, Bespin, and the Imperial capital world Coruscant. Then in 2004 it was edited further with Naboo from the Prequels and Hayden Christensen as Anakin's Ghost.

Tattoine was in fact modeled after the desert planet Arrakis in the Dune novel by Frank Herbert. We saw the skeleton of a sandworm in Episode IV when C3-PO was wandering after their escape pod landed, and the creature they try to feed Han and Luke to is a live sandworm. Luke's aunt and uncle were "moisture farmers", similar to the windtraps the Fremen in Dune used to collect water. Of course some details had to be changed for copyright and plot reasons.
@35:00 - Leia's outfit has been the subject of vast discussions over the last 40 years.
@53:00 - "How does he know how to drive these things?" - It runs in the family 🙂

Once you watch the prequels you will realize what a big heart Anakin had before he became Darth Vader.
As for the order in which movies should be watched, people who don't know Darth Vader is Luke's father can still watch the movies in release order and live the "I am your father" moment just like people in 1980 did. But the majority of people these days already know because it's popular culture, and in that case I recommend chronological order: I've seen people reacting in shock when they hear the name Darth Vader for the first time in the prequels and they learn it's Anakin.

1:31:02 Vader didn't know about Leia, but he could sense what Luke was thinking and feeling - especially his fears.
The Dark Side is founded on one's fears, anger and hatred - the "Dark" emotions.
As the Sith are devoted to using Dark emotions, they will always sense when someone is afraid or angry or full of hate.
Palpatine had always planned on replacing Vader with Luke. A Sith Lord is always looking for a stronger apprentice, and a Sith apprentice is always plotting to overthrow his Master. That is the trap of turning to the Dark Side: You and your fellow Sith are always plotting against each other. No trust!

The supposed Mandala effect line actually DOES exist, just not in the final cut of the movie. There is a Radio Play version of Empire Strikes Back produced by NPR, broadcast in 1983 which actually DOES have ' No Luke, I am your father's spoken.
The radio drama was written by Brian Daley, who to fill out the storyline to better suit radio was given access to all the early drafts and storylines from the movie. There are extra scenes in the radio drama to give more context, and these never made it to the movie.
The radio drama also had access to all the raw audio recordings pre movie edit, and so there is additional music by John Williams in the Radio Plays.
Many (though not all) actors returned to re-record their lines for the radio play.
So yes ' Luke, I am your father' was in the script at some point, and was spoken by Vader - just not in the movie. Maybe this contributed to the mandala effect (radio plays were like podcasts at the time - so pretty popular - I had them on cassette tape, and listened to them on long road trips).

The original plan was to have the final battle on Kashyyk, the wookies's home planet. Not sure why they changed; I wonder if they couldn't find enough super-tall actors. Kids + little people are a lot more common.

The "big hats" the imperial operator wore were supposed to be representing the "navy" of the imperial fleet. If you go back to World War 2 the American sailors on the ships wore "big hats" aboard the ships to deflect water as they were manning their stations on the ship during battle. It's not fun getting water in your face so these "big hats" helped the sailors keep a "dry" face. A lot of WW2 movies like Tora Tora Tora, Midway some sailors wore "big hats" too. I see only what a movie shows but never was in the Navy to know for sure. Help them out internet. Have a great watch !!!

RE: Luke and Leia being siblings - you are not the only one who did not see it coming. It was necessary to write it into the script after the filmmakers were able to convince Harrison Ford to return for a third film. Originally, Han was supposed to die (or otherwise be completely out of the picture) at the end of Empire Strikes Back with Lando taking over his role in the friend group, and it would leave Luke and Leia to have a classic romantic relationship (knight errant completes his quest and marries the princess). As an aside, a Luke-Leia romance was furthered by the first Star Wars novel, "Splinter of the Mind's Eye," by Alan Dean Foster, published after the first film and based upon a script that Lucas had prepared for a low-budget sequel in the event that "Star Wars" bombed; "Star Wars" was a huge success, however, so "Empire Strikes Back" was able to be made, and "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" became a novel (which was reworked in subsequent printings to remove the romance and therefore conform to "Return of the Jedi"). The return of Harrison Ford, and the consequent return of Han Solo, revived the love triangle problem that would have been resolved by Han's death; people really liked the Han-Leia romance from Empire Strikes Back, so Lucas cut Luke out of the triangle by making him related to Leia by blood so as to resolve it without needing to raise the specter of hard feelings either on the part of the characters or the fans.

Yeah I don't know what all this take about the 1st movie changing to episode IV is about. I've only known the 1st 3 movies referred to as episodes IV, V, and VI when I saw them in the theater. So we always expected the prequels to come out. And we only hoped the last 3 would be made (because some of us were skeptical about Lucas' intentions). An interview suggested a total of 9 movies but we suspected this was more of a ploy to get the 1st one made. But it eventually all worded out in the end.

*2. The scene at the Sarlacc pit was shot in my home state of Arizona in the middle of the Yuma desert, while the scenes on the forest moon of Endor were shot in the Redwood Forest of California.*

They got the episodes in starting with the release of Episode 5 (Episode 4 was originally only 'Star Wars' without any subtitles, but when George Lucas got the ok to make more movies in the galaxy, they put in the episode numbers 4, 5, and 6). George Lucas always wanted prequels and felt that starting with Episode 4 was giving the people the idea that the story was much more than what they'd seen already.

When they made The Empire Strikes Back, the original plan was for Luke's sister to be a whole new character, to be introduced in further films. However, during the filming of this one they decided to end the story and cut that story thread, the easiest way being to make her an already existing character. So the various kisses were only retroactively a bit dodgy.

in case no one posted it. The first Star Wars was released as Star Wars firstly, and in the 1981 re-release the subtitles Episode IV A New Hope were added to bring it inline with the release of Empire from a year earlier. It has been known as the 4th episode since then. Empire was always #5 and Jedi (this film) #6. iniitially i understand Lucas had intended to film the the 3 prequels pretty quickly after Jedi but realised pretty quickly the technology wasn't there and he wanted a break (Empire and particurly Jedi were very hard on Lucas with his inputs into the films) hence the long period until the 1st episode (Phantom Menace) came out in 1999. (of course Lucas did make changes to the originals in 1997 - which by the way is the versions you watched here)

I'm not saying it was perfect and there was no room for disaster, but they got R2 and Lando into place, they got Leia in and Han unfrozen (would've been a lot harder to recover him still in carbonite), and they got a chance to all see each other before all the lasers started firing. The main thing they were gambling on is Jabba not summarily destroying the droids or executing anyone on the spot haha.

Han's reaction when Leia kisses him isn't a realization that she smooched her twin, it's that she actually loves her f'up smuggler, sarcastic, outlaw,jerk-ass boyfriend. I just wish Chewie was there instead of the ewok. Of course, a wookiie slapping sense into a human could be fatal

I was born in the early 1980's... so the original trilogy was really all there was for me and my older brothers. It came on TV all the time, and we'd always watch. But news of the Prequels starting buzzing around 1997... and I remember it very clearly (because they had also re-released the original trilogy as "special editions" in the theaters). I was excited at first, but less excited with each new thing I saw (the Phantom Menace was a real let down to us older folks). Jake Lloyd's casting as Anakin made me very suspicious about the film's quality long before I even saw it.

There is no "Right" or "Wrong" way to watch the trilogies. It's not a competition. To each their own.
George Lucas began the Star Wars saga with the story of Luke Skywalker for a reason. He did not always plan to make a prequel trilogy. He made the Prequel trilogy because of the huge success of the first trilogy and because fans really wanted to know more about Darth Vader.

    • @Abdullah7536
      @Abdullah7536 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Stogie2112 Thats not true, actually.
George gave a lot of reasons why he started with ANH. It’s much smaller in scale, less reliant on advanced technology, George prefers to start in the middle instead of beginning with the part where he needs to do a lot of exposition(people at that time regularly told stories also from the middle on instead of where it actually began), and finally he also considered ANH a movie with the highest success rate as it was an all in bet.
Btw, George explicitly recommended watching from TPM first. There is no right and wrong of course, but I agree that starting from TPM is overall more beneficial.

    • @Stogie2112
      @Stogie2112 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Abdullah7536 ... Yes, it is true, and YES, there is no Right or Wrong.
Watching the Prequels first is more beneficial to YOU - not to everyone.
Lucas had originally envisioned three movies and the possibility of more movies. He settled on the original trilogy. The first movie was just called "Star Wars". The original theatrical film had no mention of "Episode IV" or "A New Hope".
When they were filming "Star Wars", many of the actors and workers thought that the film would flop. Many big time actors refused to audition for it. There was no expectation of the film being a smash hit.
Of course Lucas wants everyone to watch the Prequels first. He altered all the original episodes so that they jive with Anakin Skywalker as played by Hayden Christensen. He made a LOT of money by altering and repackaging all his films. It was a marketing tactic. It's all about the MONEY - not the enjoyment of the story.

The most emotional way to watch, specially who has never seen it and is watching the current remastered versions is to watch episodes IV and V then the prequels in order, and end with VI (Return of the Jedi). You avoid the main spoilers that the prequels may reveal and the ending becomes much more emotional and just a great / perfect ending for the whole series

Sam Whitwer (the voice of Darth Maul in the Clone Wars cartoon and multiple background characters throughout the various series and films) says his preferred version -- especially for kids -- is to watch the best arcs of the Clone Wars first (not the Mortis arc, obviously), THEN Episodes IV-V, then I-III, then VI. I agree this is one of my favorite movies of all time! However I think you misunderstood the Emperor's plan and how the Dark Side works. The Dark Side is like an EXTREAMLY addictive drug. You saw how the Emperor was intentionally making Luke experience anger and hatred. If you are feeling anger and hatred and use the force at the same time then you are using the Dark Side. Which technically Luke did use it a little. Many people would have become addicted to the Dark Side right there and wouldn't be able to resist the Emperor's offer to learn how to get more of the Dark Side. The Emperor was fairly confident that using the Dark Side even once would be enough because we do see Luke look at his robotic hand, struggle, and seem to consider the Emperor's offer but Luke was able to resist the temptation. However, the Emperor, Obi one, and Yoda who were old and had tons of experience were absolutely certian that someone who is as heavily addicted to the Dark Side as Vader would never ever be able to give up the Dark Side; that is UNHEARD OF! So while the Emperor was terrible and his plan didn't work it was a smart plan. Years latter I realized it might be even smarter than I thought because Luke cut off the hand of his own father and while it was justified it seemed to count as a dark enough act that we see Luke struggle to resist the Emperor's offer for a moment. So if that alone made Luke struggle then it is possible that Luke killing his own fauther under any circumstances would be an act so dark that it would have turned Luke to the Dark Side at minimum it would have become ALMOST impossible to resist.
