As Fran Lebowitz said, "coming out was never good news". I would think it's still not good news today in any family.

WHOA! I disagree. Many parents and families accept their LGBTQ family members. To say NEVER is totally wrong. Sorry, Fran. Plus, and more importantly, (when you are an adult) it is extremely important to come out, to not live a lie, or in secret. Closets or for clothes! Take pride in yourself and live life in the light.

@@JacksGayChats In her defense, in an interview she said that a gay son or lesbian daughter WAS never good news... in those days". In the 20th century (and earlier), I would think very few parents were happy about a gay son or daughter. Just like in my day, if you were a flamboyant gay man you could pretty well only be a hairdresser. Even waiters had to be careful.

@@JacksGayChats Yes... but yet we both advise young gay people to stay in the closet until they have left the home and are financially independent of their parents.

@@JacksGayChats In this case, I would have to agree with Fran’s statement %100. I’ve worked as a Spanish translator for a school. Most parents spoke very little English. I did that for 15 years or so. I’ve come in contact with at least 30 kids who identified as lgbt. Not a single parent took that as good news. Some had the usual religious reasons but many were just worried their kid was going to have a tough life. This is all recent. I’ve yet to meet a single parent who took that as good news. Whether people are more understanding and educated on the subject is a whole different thing.

The only time it was appropriate to out someone was politicians who voted against LGBTQ issues. It is up to the individual when their time has arrived to share their status.

I remember in the 1980s, there was a gay political organization that outed anti-gay people in a national publication. It was controversial, but, I guess, a good thing.

As well as religious officials who condemn gays publicly, but they get caught themselves doing exactly that. I remember one of those televangelists who was outed a few years ago. Mind you he was even married and had kids, but on the side he was seeing this male prostitute! I can't remember his name.

@@JacksGayChats I just remembered the name of that gay-bashing pastor. His name is Ted Haggard. He was known for his anti-gay messages, and later got caught sleeping with a male prostitute and doing drugs. Do a story on that son of a B****.

Why would anyone do such a thing to a kid? What an evil thing to do! Glad to know he survived the people around him. He should've OUTED him back as a broke loser! 🤣

Some kids have committed suicide because of idiots like that guy! If someone outed me at that age, I would probably be in that situation myself! Make someone’s life miserable and then ask them to loan you money. I’m so angry I want to punch that guy 😡

@@manoelcamillio9268 I didn't think of that, but now that you said it, I see how it could potentially lead to serious consequences especially for someone in a vulnerable position. It's such a messed up thing to do.

@@manoelcamillio9268 I agree. Being outted is awful, especially when you're a teen. But I am talking about just the importance of coming out as an adult. Whether friends, family or co-working hate someone who comes out, it can't matter so much. better to come out and be yourself. Make new friends and find a new gay family. I did.
