Not only is it EXPLAINED by natural selection, it's PREDICTED by natural selection. New 'features' can occur, because genes can be duplicated and then change, point-insertions can occur, and even retroviral sequence insertions occur (all the time). If you'd taken a biology course with fruit-fly labs, you'd have seen this -- additional wings, additional thoracic/abdominal segments and so on, in single generation.
