Hey coach I’m 12 6ft 180 pounds I am a knockdown midrange shooter I have handles and can slash and get in the paint. Right now I play small forward but sometimes play point guard and power forward. What position do you think I should play?
You will most likely be placed at Center but if you were on a team I would coach I would have you change throughout the game between forward and center
Hey coach I've been here before and was 5,6 good shooter and average ball handling but now i dropped of a little shooting wise and became a great playmaker and ball handler I'm 5,8 now. I'm taller than any one in my group but I play like a point guard and like getting my teammates buckets.
Hey coach! I've been training for my hs freshman team tryouts for a while, just trying to develop my game as a whole, but I'm still struggling to find what position to play two weeks ahead of tryouts. I'm 59, 170, very skill based, average or a little below average athleticism. The mid range, handles, and 3 point shots are my strengths, but when driving to the basket, my speed and quick first step make it very difficult. My post game is great, but now that the competition is much taller, I don't see that as a valid skill anymore. Cuts are average and passing is a little above average. I've been thinking sg or sf, and although i think i'd fit the sg pos better, the spot is being tried out for by so many, it would clog up my chances. Thanks in advance!
I'm 13 and 6'0 I currently play hockey but I'm getting interested in basketball, what position should i play? My post defense is mediocre and rebounding is below avg and i have a below average vertical. I'm also a big man and my strength is above average
You will most likely be placed as Center on average height teams or Forward on Bigger teams... I’m a good finisher and driver. I am an ok shooter and amazing dribbler and rack up steals. I play the wing (shooting guard and small forward) best position for me?
Shooting guard but you have to get 9/10 handles which can be done by putting a grocery bag over your ball and tie it and put socks on your hands and do dribbling drills and also increase your shooting to 8/10 or 7.5/10 and increase mid range
hello, great video coach. im 14 6'1. I have good overall defense, a good mid and im probably the fastest player. In your general opinion what would you say is an appropriate position
I'm 5'10, 137 lbs, 14y. I have a good defense I jump very high, I'm a good Mid Range shooter, I have a tuff lay up package, and I am strong. What position should I play? Edit: I forgot to mention that I currently play SF and SG
I’m a 12yo girl who’s abt 5ft and I’m thinking about joining my middle school’s basketball Team. I look a lot taller then I actually am because I’m really slim. I’m a good shooter, but I’m not a good handler ,but I’m working on that. What position do I think would be for me?
height might be an issue, but I bet your the fastest on the team... usually asian genetics makes you super fast with fast foot speed ... Use what you have and never wish what others have that you cant control for yourself... due to my fast growth I got Oscar slaughters which was explained to me as a sack of bone chips in my knee (growing pains) they are supposed to dissolve by the time your 20, well mine didn't and the sack ruptured and the bone chips tore up my knee which lead to 2 knee surgeries... Remember to love the body your in as it could always be worst on the other side of the fence
Hi Allen I'm 13 in 8th grade 5'7 135lbs I'm a decent shooter great ball handler and okay finisher but I need to work on my defense and passing what do you suggest me to do?
for defense, agility drills... for passing make a target on the wall and aim to hit it with 1 hand and 2 hand passes, dribble past the target and pass the ball, 2 ball dribbling hitting target with one ball

I am 16,5'7 and im a small forward,i have a very low percentage when it comes to shootimg even thou in perimeter range, should i improve and focus on my strength to drive in the rim ?
Hey, I’m 5’7, 12 years old, and I weigh 109 pounds, I can jump high and I’m ok at shooting, and the worse with handles, what position should I play? And what I should focus more on
I am a great overall player. I can shoot, finsih around the rim and all that stuff at around a decent level. However, I don't have a specialty, something that I can do better than most people. I'm 14 years, about 5'10, strong, not reall fast, can't really jump. Any suggestions? I'm considering being a post defender but I don't know how to guard the post when I'm not guarding a player who is posting up. Any tips?
Your still young I never started using my size as a guard until grade 12. Thats when I learned being a 6'2, and 205 pound guard made it easy to get to the rim, between that and shooting was my specialty. For yourself you may find yourself sliding more into a forward or guard position later on, so I would say keep working on your shot especially if its already good, it could become insanely amazing. Learn to use your strength to drive to the rim. Then learn to use your strength on defense, maybe look into Kyle Lowry and he plays for yourself. Work on agility ladder drills for quickness.
Is there any way I can get a position change at my high school. I am a 5'8" Shooting guard and 14. I want to play the point guard position but my coach says that there are many shorter kids on the team and that is why I have to play the shooting guard position. I can handle the ball, shoot very consistent mid-range shots and somewhat consistent 3pt shots, and play very good perimeter defense. I am asking this as my doctor says that I will most likley be 6'1". But most colleges want a shooting guard who is at least 6'4"
If your going to be 6'1 than you could be a swing guard (PG, SG combo... I used to play that I am 6'2). In your highlight tapes obviously show your defense, shooting, driving but also spend a lot of time one passing, look for players to get the assist even if your playing SG in Highschool you will still have the ball in your hands a lot of the time. So you will have a chance to get a ton of assists. This way you can prove yourself as a Shooting Guard and Point Guard. Your in a good spot because now you will have a chance to play 2 positions which gives you a greater chance of going somewhere in Basketball... The more positions you can play the better
Hey basketball coach allen, I'm 14, 6'2, weigh 132 llbs, my 3 point shots are pretty bad, my handles are getting better and I'm probably the best out of all my friends around the rim, my mid range sucks my defence is average, I have a tendency not to pass but my passing is pretty good, I don't normally get blocks but I do steal frequently, I have no clue what position to play and i really need some help.
This vid is over a year old, so I’m not sure if you check recent comments, but I’m 17 years old, I’m 6’5 and weigh 250(was 260 last month - been going lean for a little), I love shooting etc when it comes to the guard stuff, but when I play team ball 4v4 or 5v5 I usually get out at center(which is understandable)...I was just wondering what you personally thought, and a word of encouragement would help😁
6'5 in pickup games is usually a center (Im 6'2 and im a center in pick ups too unless im lucky and someone taller is playing) ... talk your teammates into spreading and running a 5 out or 4 out with lots of off ball movement and screens and cuts through the key for easy baskets. plus by spreading the floor it opens up the floor for easy baskets... but at the same time if you get a mismatch destroy the shorter players in the post lol ... 6'5 is a good heigh for a guard or an undersized forward so you could work on skills at all those positions to fit onto any team
Depends on the team, as a grade 9 and 6'2 you could be a center or forward, but if your fast, and able to handle the ball and shoot you could be an amazing Point guard or shooting guard
im pretty new but im 5'4 and so is my friend who's been playing it for ages and he says shooting guard is the best for short people if you can learn to push defenders further out either by ankle brakes or passing then you need to be able to hit from the 3 points line as taller players will be up front currentlly im looking as small forward in games cus im faster then defenders but if your not then shooting guard is best learn 3 pointers
I'm 12 5,4 I'm good at defence and finishing around the rim and mid range shots I also have good handles my mum is 5,10 and my dad is 6,1 what position should I play
I’m 14 I’m 6’4 and I think I’m playing the 4 next year but I can shoot solid I’m a really good rebounder and defender and I’m very athletic an can drive to the hoop what skills do you think I should work on right now
Shooting has become the number 1 skill to have, so definitely shooting. Core strength, foot speed, and lateral quickness. Then look into different ball handling drills as well
speed will be your friend at your size, playing strong defense looking to force steals and ball handling skills will allow you to attack the rim for layups... .then work on shooting to expand your game
I'm 13 years old in the 8th grade, 5'8, 150 lbs, and I'm a girl. I'm good at defense like blocking and guarding and I'd say that I'm pretty strong too (but I'm not the fastest at running lol) I'm good at layups and jump shots and I'm average at 3s. And I'm pretty okay at handling. What position should I play?
As someone who wants to get more into basketball, I really appreciate this explanation. One question: WHY does the Shooting Guard now have a roll similar to the Point Guard? What's the reasoning behind this? Wouldn't it make sense to have one person who can do that job and another person who can make the 3? Is it to make the offense more dynamic? Allowing the Shooting Guard to take a bigger roll when the Point Guard is out?
When the point guard gets pressured the shooting guard is the second option to get the ball up the court... All teams are looking to run more screen and rolls and dribble action plays which then works better with multiple point guards... A good example would be like the raptors with Vanvleet and Lowry
13 years old 5 foot 7 115 pounds, good shooter, solid handles and pretty agile, good court vision, and decent defense. What position should I play coach? (Oh yes, and I have massive thighs so I have one the best verticals in my school for my age. Average jump is about 27 inches. 30 if I’m really trying. Kinda insecure about the huge thighs so it’s kinda to find pants that fit well.)
Hello, I recently just made my team. I am 5'3 (14 yr. old) My team has me playing the two bc of my running ablility. I am a decent dribbler and shooter and I am quick on defense. Is this position right for me, and of so, any tips for becomeing better?
yes ... foot speed drills will help you gain an even bigger advantage on defense ... always room to improve shooting especially when shooting is becoming the biggest part of the game
@@bballcoachallen now I can understand a lot of the why's of the game. I'm an ocassional player but I'm helping my cousins with their game and what to do to get better.
Nice! Happy I can help... Since your helping your cousins make sure they become great shooters, shooting the 3 is one of the most important things today in Basketball
depending on team forward or center, but if you can handle the ball I would add guard to that mix... other guards at your age probably are 5'5 so imagine if you had the ability to drive on them, or if your guarded by big slow centers you could destroy teams
I play positions 1 and 2 depending if the team has a better ball handler or shooter than myself also mainly because I'm only 5'6". I prefer to adjust my style based on the personnel on my team and how the defense plays. P. S. I do love to shoot but i will not hesitate to pass to the best open man.
What position do you think I'd be best at I'm a 6.1 feet I can shoot a bit I've got pretty good handles, I'm a good defensive player and I can finished at the rim very well (I'm also 13 year old)
very similar to me at your age... right now your probably a center, would be interesting to know how tall your parents are and your wing span/leg length as that can give you an idea of how tall you may become, but is not always correct.... I would continue to work on handles, and shooting as those are both very important. Next I would work on overall strength and lateral speed, this will help with being a stronger more dominant player on the offensive and defensive side
@@bballcoachallen I'm pretty much my dad's height so we think I won't grow much taller and out of all my relative only my two uncles on my dad's side are taller then me but not much either so I don't think I'll grow past 6.5 feet max
shooting and dribbling I would say are the biggest things to work on at this point, overall strength will help you dominate as a guard as well. Lateral quickness can help you beat other guards off the first step and defensively help you guard multiple positions.... I was 6'2 when I was 13 and never grew after. I really worked on shoulder strength my entire life because I was always clinging to wanting to be a center (I love the position) but later on I used that shoulder strength to power through any defenders trying to stop me from driving to the rim. You could use that tactic as well but its a personal choice, not everyone likes taking contact. What type of a player would you like to become?
@@bballcoachallen I like the contact and I pattern my game after guys like Ja Morant, Kobe and Lebron mostly. I'm quite physical and quick which I think would help me as a guard. My coach puts me in center right now as I'm one of the tallest (I play with some older kids) what should I do because I don't really like center
What I noticed in the NBA besides Curry point guards really can't be the number one option on a championship team it's usually two-way wings LeBron James Kawhi Leonard KD
generally need 2-3 great players in different positions who can score and defend... Even when Toronto won we had Lowry (G), Kawhi (F), Siakam (F)... (Siakam is amazing playing off ball and 2nd option, but not very good as a main option)
Hey coach I don't know what position to play I'm 5'3 driving is an A shooting is a b- defense is a b handles is a A post scoring A speed B so I don't know if I should play guard or forwards
@@bballcoachallen I also have another question I am quite interested in being a power forward. Since I am tall and pretty strong and I can dribble up and down the court. I am torn between being a centre and being a power forward. Can you please clarify?

Hey coach I've been here before and was 5,6 good shooter and average ball handling but now i dropped of a little shooting wise and became a great playmaker and ball handler I'm 5,8 now. I'm taller than any one in my group but I play like a point guard and like getting my teammates buckets.
Nice! Thats good, keep working on shooting as thats become really important but being position less is really the new way of playing

Shooting guard but you have to get 9/10 handles which can be done by putting a grocery bag over your ball and tie it and put socks on your hands and do dribbling drills and also increase your shooting to 8/10 or 7.5/10 and increase mid range

Dam me hearing you being 6 ft in grade 8 really made me hella jealous I’m only 5’3 grade 7 dam having Asian genetics is really a disadvantage
height might be an issue, but I bet your the fastest on the team... usually asian genetics makes you super fast with fast foot speed ...
Hey basketball coach allen, I'm 14, 6'2, weigh 132 llbs, my 3 point shots are pretty bad, my handles are getting better and I'm probably the best out of all my friends around the rim, my mid range sucks my defence is average, I have a tendency not to pass but my passing is pretty good, I don't normally get blocks but I do steal frequently, I have no clue what position to play and i really need some help.
for your size and age I would say center or forward
I’m planning on playing next school yeah I’m a freshman and I’m 6’2 so would I get ready to play PG PF or C? Thanks and good video!
Depends on the team, as a grade 9 and 6'2 you could be a center or forward, but if your fast, and able to handle the ball and shoot you could be an amazing Point guard or shooting guard
im a freshman and im 5'3 lol
If you’re 5’4 in 8th grade, where would you recommend? I’m currently looking at shooting guard to potentially try out for
im pretty new but im 5'4 and so is my friend who's been playing it for ages and he says shooting guard is the best for short people if you can learn to push defenders further out either by ankle brakes or passing then you need to be able to hit from the 3 points line as taller players will be up front currentlly im looking as small forward in games cus im faster then defenders but if your not then shooting guard is best learn 3 pointers
Need more info
I'm 12 5,4 I'm good at defence and finishing around the rim and mid range shots I also have good handles my mum is 5,10 and my dad is 6,1 what position should I play
You will most likely be a guard or forward, shooting, dribbling, defense will be very important
Then look into different ball handling drills as well
It should be considered offensive to be THAT young and still THAT tall lmao. And I thought I was tall...
I’m 13 , 110lbs and 5’6 do Uno any roles I could play? Because I’m pretty bad at shooting and only getting started
speed will be your friend at your size, playing strong defense looking to force steals and ball handling skills will allow you to attack the rim for layups... .then work on shooting to expand your game
I'm 4'8 and 12 and I can jump high, I also can finish and slash good, but I can't shoot very well what position should I play?
at that age its hard to say, you'll be looking at either guard or forward
Dang this hard maybe SF but you might be undersized Naw go with Sf
I'm 13 years old in the 8th grade, 5'8, 150 lbs, and I'm a girl. I'm good at defense like blocking and guarding and I'd say that I'm pretty strong too (but I'm not the fastest at running lol) I'm good at layups and jump shots and I'm average at 3s. And I'm pretty okay at handling. What position should I play?
depends on team, and the needs of the team... but from what I have seen from girls basketball at your age you could be a guard or forward
@@bballcoachallen cool thanks!
Im 12 and 5'8 do u think I should play center?
depends on if the team needs it ... at your height usually... but learn all positions
A good example would be like the raptors with Vanvleet and Lowry
im 12, 5,4 too and im good at finishing, ball handling, passing, mid range shots but ok at defense. i can do post ups. what position should i be?

Hey, I'm 14 years old and I am 6 foot and 1 inch and I weigh 151 lbs. Which position do you recommend me?
depending on team forward or center, but if you can handle the ball I would add guard to that mix... other guards at your age probably are 5'5 so imagine if you had the ability to drive on them, or if your guarded by big slow centers you could destroy teams
I play positions 1 and 2 depending if the team has a better ball handler or shooter than myself also mainly because I'm only 5'6". I prefer to adjust my style based on the personnel on my team and how the defense plays. P. S. I do love to shoot but i will not hesitate to pass to the best open man.
What role would fit me? Im average at shooting, taller than average, fast on the court, decent at layups, and usually is the best dribbler.
maybe a guard or forward

Your like a point guard you sound like you similar to Gary Payton
very similar to me at your age... right now your probably a center, would be interesting to know how tall your parents are and your wing span/leg length as that can give you an idea of how tall you may become, but is not always correct....
I'm quite physical and quick which I think would help me as a guard. forward or center in most cases... but definitely learn guard skills so you can be aggressive on offense while staying in control of the ball
