How can you "keep it local" when an out of state company buys local land being used for local consumption? There needs to be more of a concerted effort between the State and agriculture. Groceries are already expensive and getting more so.

Doesn't really make sense to have a cattle ranch on Oahu. The big island has some of the largest cattle ranches in the US and already ends up exporting live cattle because there isn't enough meat processing on the island. There are feral cattle all over the big island. Molaki Ranch is 55,000 acres and hasn't had cattle in decades because they can't operate profitability over imported beef from Brazil.

This is so maddening. A Utah based company purchasing this is disgusting. I realize Hawaii relies on tourism, but start getting the land back and producing food and being sustainable.
I remember when Lahaina wasn't dried out, but lush and green. Stare taxing these millionaires. If their hugs parcels of land aren't producing products to add to the local economy tax them. It is time for Hawaiians to stop letting paradise be bought and run by outside interests. (This is coming from a Canadian who loves how Hawaii used to be.40 years ago.) Can't go back in time but you can start controlling how your country is being exploited. Get your local and federal representative involved.
This Maukele Ranch sale should have been blocked and never happened.
Hawaii doesn't need more housing for tourists it needs housing for Hawaiians.

    • @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
      @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Lāhainā has been arid since the plantations diverted the water and cattle ranches like this one removed native vegetation to replace it with dry grasses for their cattle to feed on… both occured in the 1800’s, there’s no way you “remember” that Lāhainā.
Also, Hawaiian refers to the aboriginal native kānaka maoli people only, NOT so called “locals” & this family is not Hawaiian, they are just more outsiders, like the vast majority of the population here are, and they’ve all had a hand in pushing Hawaiians out of our ancestral homelands and “buying” lands illegally stollen from us.

Some things in Hawaii should be protected as a historical part of island life.
That should be the Paniolo Working Museum,Cultural Center and Open Space Conservation Area.
The State should gladly pay for it.
Visitors would gladly pay for a horseback ride through those green fields. Hay rides for the kids. Sell local cheese, beef jerky and produce. Throw lasso, milk a cow, ride the mechanical bull. Learn the history of ranching, the life of the early Paniolos and their legendary skills.
Get away from the usual tourist places for a bit of old Hawaii and know your dollars are supporting a vanishing lifestyle.
These are things you can't get back once lost.
If the ships ever stopped bringing food everyone would starve.
It's critical to preserve agriculture, farms and ranches.

Look, I’m all for local don’t get me wrong but the viability of producing local is getting far too expensive. The only way land can pay its taxes is to generate high revenue and ranching doesn’t cut it. Only developers have the means to generate that kind of money. Blame the State for not protecting these local businesses. We’ve lost our dairies (used to be 2 major producers), our egg farms, and now our beef. Next, our ag lands? Pineapple and sugar cane, gone except as tourist attractions. Waimanalo greens, bananas, supersweet corn, watermelon, all gonna go too? BLAME THE STATE.

The Indian at least has a Reservation ( always of waste / bad lands ) he can waste away on. But you will slowly be forced out: food too expensive, water too expensive, property taxes more than you can afford, electricity so high you can't afford it. So you'll be forced to sell, or forfeit your land. It's a done deal, you're just waking up to reality. Best leave sooner than later. They'll burn you out if you refuse to sell. A big part of the problem are the sellers. Who owned this land and sold it to outsiders? Outsiders should embrace local values not try and change things. We are experiencing the same thing here on the main land in Ojai, Ca.. Land owners need to study who they are selling to before they sell. Not just sell to the highest bidder. They should be ashamed. No moral or ethical values.

So, if the ranchers can't move their livestock and equipment, they get kicked off the land and their legacy is stolen. This is sickening.

They were not forced. The lease was up and they had an opportunity to buy another lease and couldn't afford it. They NEVER owned the land. It was never their's to loose or be "forced" out of. Fake news

At least be honest about it.

Trying to speak as a non resident, of Hawsii.
Hawaii should be protected from invasive species. Even from their protectors.
I would not wish to see the outcome, if they were occupied by another country...
Availability of food for people should not infringed upon, by anyone, in any country.
Any developer, in Hawaii, should only be of their own, original, native residents.
Big money and power is so often misused and abuse the land an local people.

If you look at history, the upper class eats meat but prefers the citizens eat vegetables and wheat products which lead to a more lethargic mindset and and less energy. Top that off with the legalization of weed and you will see a common thread
