I`m a little suprized you choose to do a 100K so short after Chicago. I also ran Chicago and I always take 2 weeks off and than slowly build up my long runs again. I think you need a longer build up for a 100K to avoid injury, it`s a little risky. At the same time I know anything is possible, and sometimes you need to go for what you want. That beeing said, I think you would have had a better experience if you did a proper build. Good luck going forward. :)
If you're a fan of hiking, it may interest you that the most useful training for my 100 km ultra wasn't running but a 9 day hike. Each day I had about 8 hrs or more on feet.
No race, event, or challenge, whether you’re an amateur or professional, is worth risking significant long term injury. You’re so right that making sensible decisions is a skill. I have had to make them while seeking summits and everybody comes home. That’s the most important thing.
DNF isn't failing. You have a positive attitude! It takes time for your body to build the resilience for ultra. Good luck in your future challenges!😊🏃♀🏃♀🏃♀
Know the feeling. Attempted a trail 100 in Feb with my previous longest being 50km. Also DNF'd at 60km (58.8 at the aid station), but like you, took the positives and lessons from it. Decided that the only negative was the dnf itself, but all the wins like it being my longest run to date, only 6 weeks after a covid dose etc were worth the attempt. I knew it was going to be a maybe going in but decided that I'd rather give it a shot and potentially succeed than not try at all and definitely fail. This coming Feb, I have unfinished business and will go in better prepared. 🙂
Thank you for sharing this experience! That last part with the voice over was magical - so much wisdom and positivity- especially like ‘I know my progress will not be linear.’ I wish you a great recovery and success in the upcoming endeavors.
Thank you for sharing this raw, honest experience, Mary! I find it truly inspiring to see even the best navigating hard times. Most of all, I appreciate how you honored your body above all else. We are so often taught to ignore what our body is telling us so thank you for providing a much healthier and self compassionate example!! ❤
At least you dare to try! Now that's a big statement coming from you that rings deep into me. I have done some 50 km races, but til now I have not dare to venture into the 100km. You somehow manage to infuse the "dare to try" spirit into us. Thank you Mary.
It seems like you didn't fail Mary; you discovered a new limit you hadn't reached before. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and you've shown incredible resilience. Keep pushing forward, and I believe you'll achieve your goal on the next attempt. All the best, you've got this! 🌟
Such a good and brave call to not finish. So important to listen to you body and allow yourself to have a chance at your other goals. So many people totally break themselves running when injured. Such an important video reinforcing a really important message. Plus you still did an ultra distance despite everything! Amazing!
Fail forward!! Failure is the foundation of success. And by getting out there and consistently putting in the work means you are winning. True success is just getting up and doing the thing every day regardless of outcome. Along the way you learn a lot about life and yourself. Congratulations for doing something amazing.
Never forget you grinding it out past me just as were getting to first avenue in New York last year .. so there is no doubt you left it all out there you hero. . You made the right call, the race will be there for you again next time.
All the emotions, right? All the emotions... Mary, this video is so powerful, and the fact that you made and shared it with us demonstrates YOUR power. Ya gotta be strong to do that, ya know? And for what it's worth, on a day when I wasn't looking forward to going out for my scheduled run, you and your video helped remind me what a gift even a few steps are. So I'm going into that run with appreciation, openness and acceptance of whatever it brings. We're lucky to be doing this at all, right? Thank you!
Great new PB for distance! You pushed yourself into a new zone and avoided injury which is truly all that matters. I haven't run any ultras (so take what I say with a grain of salt), but it seems to me that you needed to slow down even more than you did. Given you have a 3:13 marathon PB, running at 7:30/km (or 8km each hour) would likely have been a more sustainable rate that you could easily do. Could do 3km at an easy 6:00/km pace and then walk 1 km. That would get you through 100km in 12.5 hours.
Oh Mary, thank you for sharing this , I'm signed up for my first 100km, & 1 know it's a big jump from 50k, but I'm being brave, g while I hope to enjoy it I need to prepare myself for a bad day too. Like you said, run today to run tomorrow 💪
The wrap up at end of the video 100% agree with and my conclusion when I had my first DNF this year at 75 miles going for 100. Unusual hot day, blisters did me in. Always love watching your videos for the inspiration.
I ran an 80k race a couple of weeks ago. Before that twice 73k runs and several 40/50ks. Most people have no idea how painful this feels after a certain distance/time - for everyone, even the elite. If you think you ran a Marathon and now you can run 100k, most of the time you are wrong. It's so different. It's good to see accomplished runners like you struggling with it, it helps to see things in proportion again. Thanks and congrats! 60k is a big thing.
Mary - thank you for your honest recap of your race. Perhaps this wasn’t the race that you hoped for, but in the things you learned - you should also know you inspire and encourage those of us who have had a recent race that didn’t go the way we wanted. I’m sure you will get the distance you were looking for the next time.
Well done for Toeing the line, and enjoying what you could. It amazing how your body can surprise you with what it can do, and sometimes what it can't when you think it should. I did TheLap September, and I found another event thinking it'd be a waste not to use my training to do a shorter distance.. but apparently my body wasn't up for a 33mile run withing 3 weeks of a 47 mile run 🤔😊. I finished it, but it was harder than it should have been, and my legs were struggling more at mile 30, then they were at mile 45 ... its easy to knock yourself for it, especially when you've recently accomplashed a goal. I have my first 100k in May.. i could have sworn you'd been further.. good luck on your upcoming adventures.
UTMB ✅ Dragon's back ✅ but you won't catch me on a flat lapped ultra - that must have been so hard on the body/mind. Congratulations for going as far as you did and you should be very proud - also means you can make the most of running with Kipchoge! Great call
Well done Mary! 60KM! The longest you ever run! I'm sorry you couldn't finish, but I'm sure you will one day! Maybe it was just too much so close after the Chicago marathon as you said! Well done!
Running intervals (Run/Walk) will prevail everytime including 100 milers. Gives sets of muscles rests. As long as there are no cutoffs or you stay in front of them, you can do a 60k comfortably. Of course training the right amount of mileage is smart too. Complex carbs, Potassium, magnesium and electrolytes are key! 🤩 Been running ultras for a few years now injury free! Congratulations!
Well done Mary. DNF = Dignity, Noble & Fortitude. To be able to achieve 60K is outstanding. To leave the house and be able to achieve 60k is just mind blowing and yet you did it. Bloody marvellous
@ You guys are amazing, I love watching your content and it’s helped me a lot to get faster! I can’t wait to run my first Ultra and I hope you are able to overcome this, Best of luck!
I think this is the most natural I’ve seen you Mary - really enjoyed this video, but sorry for you that you didn’t make the full 100. You definitely will some time tho 👍
Thank you for your reality check. I appreciate you❤. If we do reach our goal at a moment and we move on, we gain respect from others for your efforts.🎉
Mary Well Done on your efforts, you did brilliantly! This happened to me in Berlin, it felt like my sports bra was strangling my rib cage the stomach cramps got so bad. I hadn’t changed anything, wore the same gear and had the same fuel during training so couldn’t understand what went wrong!!😢
Thanks for sharing. Its so inspiring to know how hard it is even when you are as accomplished as you are. Im sure this experience will make your next attempt a success! Good luck ❤
Mary this is absolutely inspiring!!!! We should be going for goals and so what if it takes us many tries or we get to see where our bodies boundaries are that’s an accomplishment in itself!
well done, I once ran up to 60k on a trail event as well one week I completed Grandmas Marathon. yes it is hard but important to know when to stop. thanks on sharing
That was very inspiring Mary! One a side note, my Pro's suddenly started to hurt the outside of my foot as well and you did well to change shoes on the fly like that!
It feels good to be alive. 😢 Thanks for sharing this video. It really is important to listen to our body. Today's not our day. There's always another day ahead. We love you and we'll always look forward to finishing that 100K 🎉🤘
Great video, and great attempt. It takes such strength to recognize when it's time to stop and listen to your body. Not everyone has that. You are amazing. Proud of you!
Awesome Run Mary ❤️ choose your battles 💪🏻 ive run both 100km Road Champs and Trail.Road was sooo much harder.Respect to you 🙏 and all the best in your recovery 🥰 Thanks for an awesome video x
Wow Mary! 60K’s! That’s amazing and right after Chicago! I cannot imagine. I can feel the disappointment. Those side stitches and cramps are so debilitating.
Great job,thx for showing this as well to us! I always scared to push myself to the limit in distance...now I will try..for me is the marathon what I can't believe I would be able to archive
Great and inspiring video. I have DNF'd my very first marathon at 42.00km. I fainted and fell down. But I came back just two months later and completed the distance, and many times again since then. I do not know if I would be still running without that DNF.
@@conradburdekin722 Yes, precisely 200 meters. I guess could say that I have seen the finisline, but I can not recall as I was pretty much on auto-pilot after the 39th km mark. I screwed up my drinking strategy and I was so stressed the day before that I could not sleep. So my heart rate gone to the ISS right after the start. Basically I was running 95% of my max heart rate 25km and about 5km at 105% of my max heart rate until I fainted. Thank for sharing!… supercool video. 😎 Really inspiring. 😀 I’m interested to try a 100 k next year. I’m as well interesting to see how I react to the distance. (..and congratulations for your 60 k 😀)
Congratulations on your 60k, and your new PB distance! You were FLYING at the start... Maybe a wee bit too fast for a 100k? I tried my first 100k this year, and misread the course info to be 1,000ft of vert total... when it was actually PER LAP, with 5 laps. 😅 I dropped at 45 miles (72ish k). Longest I've ever run, though, so I was thrilled! Next year!
Every "failure" is an opportunity to learn. Don't be discouraged by this. Try to feel optimistic and look at this as a chance to learn what you could have done better/differently so you will succeed next time. If you never fail, you never learn and improve.
60 K is awesome! It took me 3 attempts to do 50 K. each attempt you learn something. So maybe the lesson from this race is that you need a little bit more recovery time from doing a marathon? Lessons i had learned were fueling better and staying hydrated. Also running my own race. The pace needed to be slower for me to go longer.
Difficult, but an excellent call in this situation! You'll get another shot and it will feel EXTRA rewarding when you cross the finish line next time! You just gifted yourself more motivation and a much sweeter feeling for next time!!
Well done! Phenomenal effort Mary - you should be so proud of yourself - you did a great job. Highly recommend Sally McCrae's podcast if you haven't heard of it/her - she's an ultramarathoner and been inspiring me of late :) alongside you guys of course! x
This is awesome video and beautiful win! Congrats, Mary ♥ It also reminded me how I tried by first trail run couple months ago. It was a 15 km run in the mountains. About 3-4 km in I had trouble breathing and started getting dizzy. Decision to stop was hard but I feel now it was actually the best decision ♥
I have 2 major humps in long races like this: First one is eating. I either get heat sickness and can't stomache the food or just can't eat enough. The second is the point of exhaustion. About 10 hours in my muscles give out and I can't run longer than a minute at a time.
Oh Mary! Sometimes it’s not what we want, but sometimes what we need. There’s always something positive to be found even in disappointment, & it sounds as if you have already found so many positives in this brave effort. You have had an incredible year, & you are so awesome-don’t ever forget that!! Thankyou so much for sharing!
@Mary What happened to the old sports rule of not doing more than 10 % more than your previous record? 50 k to 60 is a 20 % increase and you are lucky to not injure yourself doing that in normal situation but twice so so quickly after a marathon let alone a pb marathon. I did the same mistake of not being informed of the 10 % rule by riding a bike from 110k pb to 140 then 186 luckily without injury. Look how white thus blood deprived your face is before DNF vs after. That tells of a system shock of attempting a 100 % increase in distance over pb. TH-cam channel Therunexperience coach Morgan tried the same doubling of distance record successfully and she said that her feet soles were not ready. It felt like walking and running like on broken glass. Ouch! I have felt the same at work with black and blue foot on one side andb75 % of the surface on another side. I limped all the time.
This is one of my favorite videos. A brutally honest recap of an incredibly brave attempt. Thank you for sharing!

A night shift and a 100k, that’s a double effort. You did great.
Heads up Mary !
You are a beast!! 😮
I have 2 major humps in long races like this: First one is eating. I either get heat sickness and can't stomache the food or just can't eat enough. The second is the point of exhaustion. About 10 hours in my muscles give out and I can't run longer than a minute at a time.
Keep going!
You did 60k!!!! Less than 1% of people living will ever do this, therefore, you are special!!
Some days the body just says "nope, not today". Effort was there, and that's all that counts. Protect your fitness.
Courtney Dauwalter DNF'd her first ultra. You did great. 37 miles is a huge achievement.
I find that if I try to force too many ‘white’ carbs I get stomach cramps in general, not just running. Not sure if that’s helpful
Congrats for your PB: you've Never ran so far👍👍
