I remember being a around 10 or 11, that was the first coaster I ever went on, love the 1st drop, smooth and straight, you pick up speed as you go and then bank that 1st right turn feels like your sideways. For a 11 year old it's a blast!! What a great flashback. I left Chicago a long time ago and moved to Texas. What a flashback, thanks so much for posting, that is still my favorate ride, even if I'm more of a 'gang time" 1st drop junkie now in my older years. Still my favorate coaster
Many thanks for uploading this video of what was one of my fondest childhood memories. With a season ticket for the Santa Clara Great America, I rode Whizzer incessantly. Sadly, that one was remove and I'm happy to hear that Whizzer in Gurney was saved. It truly is a classic coaster, as it's now almost 35 years old and one of just two Speedracer coaster left in the world. It's also one of the vry few coasters in existence where the kids can ride it too. It was my very first big coaster.
This is the first ride I ever went on at G.A. as a wee lad in 1976 when it opened. I was 8.. yesterday my 2 boys, 6 & 8 rode the Whizzer and made it THEIR first ride ever ridden at G.A. This coaster is perfect for families, moreso than any other coaster that I can think of in any park. They MUST leave the Whizzer in the park !!
IT MIGHT BE A BABY RIDE BUT ITS THE BEST ROLLER COASTER AND ITS WAS THE RIDE THAT STARTED SIX FLAGS AND IT WAS MY FIRST ROLLER COASTER GOTTA LOVE IT ITS A CLASSIC!!!!!!!
I have watched many of your videos and you do a great job holding the camera during the rides. To bad the rest can't keep control of the camera as well as you can.
Thanks for the compliment. You got to figure there is a right way and a not paying attention way. To my credit i used a Canon Powershot for the videos and was able to fist the camera in front of me, but you really have to have a feel for where the lens is pointing. It is a talent, comes with lots of practice...
I heard that they were going to demolish this ride but a grassroots campaign saved it. I've been to Great America in the past and this is a fun coaster.
This coaster was supposed to be torn down in 2002 for the building of superman, but people complained that it was a classic so they tore down shockwave. you want upside down? shockwave= 7 inversions. it was a new innovation when it opened as the tallest fastest most inverted coaster in 1988. but now, what used to be the first thing you saw when walking in the parking lot, is gone. and this hunk-o-junk is still sittin there, looking lame, being lame, gettin stuck at the top every other time...
@MRHARDY1996 Sorry. You are wrong. And it's called Whizzer, not wheezer. check your facts: just google "Whizzer roller coaster" it's the FIRST thing that comes up.
they Almost took this ride out of six flags great america. It was in the news paper.but people called and complan about taking it out.So they decide to keep it.
photosbychristensen They removed an identical version from santa clara circa 1988 but I managed to ride it a few times before that. A very tame coaster by today's standards but nostalgic none the less.
