Was just in Colonia last February so was nice to be reminded of it once again in your videos. Saw the same procession of drums going down the street one night. Not sure if it happens nightly or not. However, it was a precursor to what we saw a few days later in Montivideo and their "Carnival". One of the most impressive events I've ever seen!. The entire event took 6 hours and lasted till after 2 in the morning! The costumes and energy were fantastic. Apparently that type of thing is a pretty big deal in Uruguay. Was so fortunate to have seen it!

I think Uruguay is, likely, the only place in the world where descendants of Europeans, urban dwellers, learned to play African drums massively and they massively do it on the streets of Montevideo on certain dates, including ther longest Carnival in the world. A beautiful case of cultural appropriation. I have been around and it is unique to Uruguay...

the colony actually has a very bloody history. the Portuguese originally founded it and built the impressive fortified walls to defend it from enemies. then over the course of the next 150 years the two Iberian powers fought over it, as the town changed hands dozens of times with the Spanish eventually taking permanent control. a lot of gory battles took place between the Spanish & Portuguese on those old cobble stoned roads

    • @samuelandaudrey

Good question! The Río de la Plata is called River Plate in English - same with the Argentine football team named after the same river. I think the plate refers to silver plated rather than plate the dish.
