Was just in Colonia last February so was nice to be reminded of it once again in your videos. Saw the same procession of drums going down the street one night. Not sure if it happens nightly or not. However, it was a precursor to what we saw a few days later in Montivideo and their "Carnival". One of the most impressive events I've ever seen!. The entire event took 6 hours and lasted till after 2 in the morning! The costumes and energy were fantastic. Apparently that type of thing is a pretty big deal in Uruguay. Was so fortunate to have seen it!

I really liked it there. I spent a couple nights between buenos Aires and Montevideo. Nice lane with good food. Great place to chill for a day or 2 if you need to get a little rest. They are a friendly bunch. If you guys get crazy, go to foz do iguaca. Wow. Getting there is the tough part. I took the bus from the Capitol of Paraguay but that takes a visa.

You can get to Foz do Iguaçu via Puerto Iguazu in Argentina, which has an airport and bus terminal. You then just have to cross the international bridge.

There is a history behind the chivito. It is said that long time ago in Punta del Este a tourist from somewhere in South America, got into a restaurant and asked them if they had "chivito". So the chef made up the sandwich. They say that the lady loved the sandwich, so "a chivito" was born!

Villa Gessell tiene unas vistas alucinantes. Tendrían que probar el pochoclo con manteca. Bien típico de uno de los lugares mas bellos de la costa sudamericana.
El color de los ríos es marrón, ya que su base es tierra, a diferencia de los arroyos que es piedra, los océanos y mares es arena. Debido al movimiento del agua el barro hace que el agua se vea marrón. La ventaja que tiene el Río de la Plata, es que al ser un estuario, muy ancho, su base es arena que arrastra hasta las costas el océano Atlántico. Pero desemboca en él, el río Uruguay, a éste el Paraná y otros.... y sus aguas contienen tierra. Según el día, a veces las corrientes oceánicas, hacen qué sus aguas se vean verdes.
El origen se le atribuye a Antonio Carbonaro, quien por casualidad lo inventó en la década de 1940. Según cuenta la historia, este hombre tenía un bar en la esquina de las calles 31 y 32 de Punta del Este, se llamaba El Mejillón. Entonces, una noche, una turista Argentina qué iba a cenar, lo consultó si no tenía carne de chivo. La respuesta fue negativa, pero Carbonaro se comprometió a compensarla: “Usted no se va de acá sin ser atendida”, le dijo. Entonces fue a la cocina e improvisó un plato con pedazos de peceto, fetas de jamón y algunos vegetales. Quedó delicioso. I think Uruguay is, likely, the only place in the world where descendants of Europeans, urban dwellers, learned to play African drums massively and they massively do it on the streets of Montevideo on certain dates, including ther longest Carnival in the world. A beautiful case of cultural appropriation. I have been around and it is unique to Uruguay...

Omg the dogs there. Lol one lived in the hotel door way. One would pull my sleave to play in the park. Uruguay, and that fort, changed hands between the Portuguese and spanish so many times the people are neither. Mix in some Italian and German and you have the people there.
the colony actually has a very bloody history. the Portuguese originally founded it and built the impressive fortified walls to defend it from enemies. then over the course of the next 150 years the two Iberian powers fought over it, as the town changed hands dozens of times with the Spanish eventually taking permanent control. a lot of gory battles took place between the Spanish & Portuguese on those old cobble stoned roads

Good question! The Río de la Plata is called River Plate in English - same with the Argentine football team named after the same river. I think the plate refers to silver plated rather than plate the dish.

Yup, that's the same Río de la Plata. It would make a lot of sense for it to be River of Silver, but the accepted translation seems to be River Plate. The football team named after the Río de la Plata also goes by River Plate.

It's called Parrillada El Portón. They specialize in grilled meat, but you can also order a great chivito!

I think Uruguay is, likely, the only place in the world where descendants of Europeans, urban dwellers, learned to play African drums massively and they massively do it on the streets of Montevideo on certain dates, including ther longest Carnival in the world. A beautiful case of cultural appropriation. I have been around and it is unique to Uruguay...
Would be very interesting to attend carnival.

the colony actually has a very bloody history. the Portuguese originally founded it and built the impressive fortified walls to defend it from enemies. then over the course of the next 150 years the two Iberian powers fought over it, as the town changed hands dozens of times with the Spanish eventually taking permanent control. a lot of gory battles took place between the Spanish & Portuguese on those old cobble stoned roads

Uruguay is pricier than Argentina. We were paying 2-3 times more in restaurants.
1 argentinian peso is 0,5 uruguayan peso. And Uruguay is more expensive than Argentina, maybe 2 or 3 times

Good question! The Río de la Plata is called River Plate in English - same with the Argentine football team named after the same river. I think the plate refers to silver plated rather than plate the dish.

Yup, that's the same Río de la Plata. It would make a lot of sense for it to be River of Silver, but the accepted translation seems to be River Plate. The football team named after the Río de la Plata also goes by River Plate.
