What Is The ARMSTRONG CURSE?

  • DAVE KNOWS that the Armstrong family is one of wrestling industry's most respected kin in all of WWE, WCW, TNA and NWA wrestling history. Unfortunately, your average fan doesn't seem to know who they are. However, maybe the fans aren't to blame for this. Maybe there is a more ominous reason as to why they made a stable living as wrestlers, but yet mostly failed to become mainstream. In this episode I talk about the legendary Armstrong wrestling curse.

    In terms of "family curses" at least it's not a tragic one like the Graham Family or Von Erich Family.

    The Armstrong's were one of those examples of each sibling excelling at one certain thing each. Brad was the 1980 prototype pro wrestler ready for prime time . Steve and Scott were regional southern workers who would have excelled in a southern non-wwf terittory (I.e. Smoky Mountain). Brian was the Armstrong who had his finger on the pulse of 1990's rebellious attitudes,and you could say he was the "Smartest" cause he found a persona that just connected on this massive level.

    I grew up watching Bob Armstrong on Georgia Championship Wrestling. I felt that both he & later Brad Armstrong deserved more of a push nationally. Brad lacked the charisma but he was extremely good inside the ring.

    The only Armstrong curse is that Bullet Bob and Brad were the only good wrestlers, and the rest were cursed by being infinitely worse.
    Honestly, I think Brad was held back in the 80's NWA by politics and his youth. If someone in Charlotte was smart, they'd have made him a Horseman. He def had the ability, and it woulda catapulted his career. Or, if hed have gotten in WWF before the circus/costume party phase, he couldve been a perfect opponent for Savage.

      The Armstrong Curse, whatever it may have been, was never ever a matter of getting over. The Bullet and the Boys got over like CRAZY whether they were in Boutwell Auditorium, The Omni, or in front of 100 people at a car lot somewhere. I saw all of them work many many times - Bullet, Scott, and Steve I saw work as up close as you can get, with me in Bob's sleeper watching Scott roll up my partner. Steve and I had an angle in the summer of 2000. Those guys NEVER failed to tear the crowd all to pieces. Lots and lots of noise. Never was it about getting over. It was about getting pushed. They could not get pushed.

    I remember watching Bob Armstrong in the late sixties on Atlanta tv and he was nothing but a jobber and he supposedly went to Japan and came back to Georgia and became a main event attraction in Georgia and then in Florida and in Alabama and was put over by some top stars of the time such as the Assassins, Ole Anderson, Abdullah the Butcher etc.
    I remember Gordon Solie always saying Bob Armstrong the only native Georgian to ever hold the North American heavyweight championship.

    Originally, Brian had no plans to become a wrestler. He planned to make the U.S. Marines his career. After he became a combat vet, in 1991's Gulf War, he changed his mind. He would've been booked as a jobber, in WCW. But, Vince McMahon saw potential in him. Thus, the least likely Armstrong, to become a wrestler, became the most successful one.

    I keep forgetting that if you didn't live in TN, NC, KY, VA, WV, SC, or northern GA then you didn't get to watch SMW. Bob Armstrong was the on TV commissioner, Brad was a 2 time SMW Heavy Weight Champion, Scott and Steve were a tag team there and Road Dogg wrestled under a mask there except for two matches where he used the name Brian Armstrong. You should watch SMW sometime man, I think you would dig it, 95% of the episodes are on youtube. SMW, USWA, and ECW (before ECW got on TNN) were the last 3 wrestling territories in the US.

    I think of them as the Von Erichs in reverse. The youngest of the clan, Brian, was the biggest, best talker, and most likely succeed, compared to the oldest, Brad. Brian was like David Von Erich in that sense. And like the Von Erichs, each one had their own skill set, but it was still the patriarch, Bob, who had the whole package--just like Fritz

    The Armstrong curse of not getting the deserved recognition even extends to this video. For example, that picture at 1:38 is not Bob Armstrong, it's Tommy Seigler who was a popular face in the Georgia & Florida in the Seventies. Armstrong was cropped out of the picture.

    echoing what Dennis Gabriel said I think they preferred to work with their dad and preferred the straight forward traditional nwa style wrestling and really honestly chose not to be huge but to make a living and be able to maintain their ethics and for that I respected them. Staying close to dad and their fan base in southern territories where they were happy,more important than money & exposure.I really think so. And Brad doing all that for WCW and Crockett,well,he is a team player,company loyalist and would do what's asked of him I expect.I understand WCW wanted to call him Spiderman until marvel stepped in.They should of anticipated that.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess they figured that there was already a Hulk, why not a Spiderman. Yes, I do respect the Armstrongs for what they've done for the industry as well. I made this video because when talking to a friend of mine who is a big wrestling fan, I found out that he didn't know what the Armstrong Curse was. I also then found out how little most people talk about it outside of extreme meta circles. So I figured that it deserved a video.

Brad did have all the tools and talent and if wrestling hadn’t ended with the territory’s he probably would have been one of the best known names in the country . Bob did drop weights on his face , but used the keyfabe story that Ted debiase had dropped the weight on his face to draw heat .

    Several of Brad Armstrong’s contemporaries say that Brad’s inability to achieve greater success in the business, was his unwillingness to work for the WWF because it would have required him to be far away from the South, where he enjoyed living and working. Given the backstage politics and culture of the WWF, I completely understand Brad’s desire to remain in the South, even if he could have made more money in Vince’s promotion.

    Here is a fun little factoid for my fellow wrestling fans and music fans, musician Ray Stevens got injured several times by Bob Armstrong back when he was Blue Cyclone, why? 1. He was a big fan of the wrestler Ray Stevens, during a match he through at Armstrong to keep him from locking the wrestler that shared his name in a sleeperhold, after the match the musician was beaten down and suffered a neck injury. 2. When he healed up he try to have two guys help him jump Armstrong in a wrestling bar, yet the two guys chickened out and got his ass kicked again. 3. He got jumped by Armstrong a final time at a concert, leading Stevens to write a hilarious song “Blue Cyclone” about his many fights with him, this led them to burying the hatchet.

    2 things:
    1. Larry Zbysko made the comment during a rematch between Dean Malenko and Armstrong. Armstrong had won against Malenko the previous week. This was after Malenko stole Rey Misterio's mask. Armstrong was having a hard time finishing off Malenko, and Zybysko made the "Armstrong Curse" comment.
    2. It was jobber to the stars Tom Zenk as 1 half of Dos Hombres, not Armstrong, according to Bischoff.

With the exception of the New Age Outlaws feud with Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie as soon as the Outlaws entrance was over I took a bathroom break or for some grub. So I would have kept him a manager and not a wrestler. That's why his time was relatively short in my opinion.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He was injured while filming that scene, but it wasn't a shoot. It also didn't end his career. While he was out with injury his WCW contract expired. He then returned to the ring and even worked for the WWE, mostly as a trainer, but he also did house shows from time to time

    There is nothing compared to the Von Erich curse. Armstrong curse? They haven't done too bad for themselves. They don't get over because they are too blue colored. Which is a good thing to me. However, people prefer the Rock or HHH or people like that. The only so called blue color guy to make it really big was Stone Cold. But he had a lot of things going for him that made it happen for him.

    I don't think the Armstrong sons were really cursed. Brad was a great technical wrestler (almost as smooth as Eaton or Arn Anderson) but had no mic skills and a lack of charisma to put him over. This became esp. hard for him to suceed as the 90s approached and WCW started to follow WWF's blueprint of getting into cartoonish gimmicks and going way from more traditional wrestling. Road Dogg was the complete opposite. He had tons of charisma and mic skills but was pretty crappy in the ring IMO. I think the guy had what. two or three moves (if you can even call them that).

      Dave Knows Wrestling well then if you wanna talk National tv....WTBS was in fact a superstation and had National tv in 1983 and Bob and Brad were over then to....But I get it the Armstrong curse was a thing that Brad and Brian did steer into....It was WCW incomprehensible leaders that looked at Brad and Scott and Steve (and Brian for a short time) as guys who were guys to get over other guys which speaks more to their talent than anything (also working shows with Bob and Scott some 15 years ago was a highlight of my life)

  • @zudemaster
    @zudemaster 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no such thing as a curse. The idea that this was brought on by some shrunken head that Bob stole from Abdullah is silly. The Armstrongs were great wrestlers in the ring, but just bland when it came to everything else. In wrestling if you don't have a good gimmick and a good ability to talk on camera you can just forget it.Brad had great in ring skills but just boring when it came to everything else. Road Dog was the opposite, He had ok ring skills and more importantly he could talk and had a great gimmick. This is why he was able to go further than his brothers.
