  • The Great Gatsby entered public domain January 1, 2021, and as such, we have a bounty of Great Gatsby theatrical events! Immersive Gatsby, The Great Gatsby at Paper Mill Playhouse, and Gatsby at American Repertory Theatre. What the heck is going on with these shows? Which will make it to Broadway? And what can a similar Broadway duel teach us about the future of these?
What do you think? As always, conversation welcomed in the comments.

I absolutely LOVED the show at Papermill but that might be because im a massive Eva Noblezada fan. The music was amazing by itself, the set was stunning by itself, the choreo is so entertaining that I had to even learn some myself once I saw the videos of the show. I had two go twice that same week because I was so in love. I just saw it in previews at Gatsby and I can't lie, it is SO MUCH BETTER. The bangers from the Papermill production are amazing, but do not compare to the updated versions. The new songs are so needed and fit the jazzy period better. The extended songs help with the story in my opinion, and the shortened versions keep the audience tuned in because it isnt the longest thing ever.
I really want to see ART's production of Gatsby just because i'm a huge fan of the book, movie, and musical. I want to see it all.

The team has been working HARD and it shows, doesn't it??? I love how much you love Gatsby--and honestly, same :)

@@itskatharinequinn The papermill production made me SOOO excited to read the book in my ELA class. I had to hold myself back from spoiling what happens to my friends. The Broadway rendition made me hate the characters a little more but you're not supposed to like them anyway since theyre all fake. So good.

As a theatre nerd myself (my old troupe used to call ourselves Drama Dorks), I kind of agree with all the points made here. I loved Papermill’s production - it’s such a fun night and I personally go love spectacle so I ADORED the sets (the tech was impressive) and the costumes, especially the ensemble’s. But I definitely do think it was a little on the nose and could have done with subtext. And quite honestly, I was underwhelmed by the music; I don’t remember a single one of the actual songs. Well maybe that’s not totally accurate, I remember maybe two, mostly because the lyrics made me face palm. (And “Daisy”’s reprise because of the way Jeremy belted TF out of it.)
So I personally would make changes, mostly to the music. That said, if the show went to Broadway as is and become a smash, I’d be beyond thrilled. Theatre can sometimes be just a feast for your eyes and a fun night out. I think it’d sell well in a smaller to medium venue, maybe the Hudson or the Lyceum.

So glad you loved Gatsby--I think it's such a sweeping, entertaining night at the theater. And I really do think there's room for multiple interpretations. Time will tell, I suppose... :)

The ART one sounds too weird and artsy and might not appeal to the average theater goer. The Paper Mill one sounds more tourist friendly and commercial. And I'd like to see Jordan get a break and finally win a Tony.

I don't know! The idea of teens singing totally fucked into microphones in little german clothes sounds really weird but Spring Awakening was a megahit nonetheless! BUT a lot of shows take big swings and don't hit that same audience. Time will tell!

We also had two Frankensteins on Broadway. Young Frankenstein and the Frankenstein with Hunter Foster, which unfortunately which never made it from off-Broadway.

I actually liked the show at Papermill. That first song is an EAR WORM that I keep humming. I think there are some things that need to get ironed out, either in the level of specificity or transitions from beat to beat, but overall… solid show (if it transfers, Noah should get top billing with the other two… JUST SAYIN…).
I think there’s also a place for both. I’m not sure what’s at Circle in the Square, but maybe that’s where ART could go?

I think there will be a place for both, too! just hae to be careful of them not cannibalizing each other. And I love your Noah hype--he's so incredible, isn't he?? And glad you enjoyed Gatsby at PMP :)

@@itskatharinequinn JUSTICE FOR NOAH!!! He is absolutely incredible and deserves everything the universe has in store. We Stan.
And yes!! I’m planning (if I can get a ticket…) to see it in Boston, but do truly think there is a place for both. I think it’s different approaches to the material that will provide the opportunity for both to exist. ❤

I saw the Paper Mill version yesterday and I thought Jeremy and Eva were fantastic. But I love pretty much anyone connected with Hadestown and I think Chavkin is brilliant, so I also want her version to succeed. I'm sure there's room for both versions!

Do you know when there will be any announcements about what’s happening with the PMP Gatsby?
