It would be interesting to test the tent on the roof rather than over the bed. You drive enough miles to get a good read on efficiency losses, wind noise, ease of use, etc.... I get its not ideal, but for the occasions that the bed needs to carry something larger it would be good to know.

Really cool setup.
Great video. Wanted to note the pins that came with your Maxtrax mount is made for the Extreme version of their boards. You have the MK2 boards which are thinner and that’s why you’ll notice they can move when the pins are rotated. You should be able to buy the correct pins from their site.

Great video as always. A few quick comments…1. I use bungies on the cab-side window awning to attach it to the most forward crossbar to open up that window and make the awning funcitonal. 2. If you turn the cab-side crossbar iKamper mounts 180º, you can use the included tool to tighten the mount on the crossbar from the tailgate without having to remove the crossbars from the truck.

Your goals and my goals are exactly the same. I'm trying rig out my R1T for overlanding and extended camping trips. We use to do 2-3 day camp trips in my Tesla Model 3, if you believe it. Now that we have the truck, we can go so much further.
Love your setup, you'll have to keep us updated on your thoughts of that Skycamp Mini 3! I have so many standard tents I can't, yet, justify pulling the trigger on a truck bed tent, unless it's truly amazing.

Thanks! I know Oregon has some beautiful places to visit but I personally haven’t explored there yet so no specific spots I can recommend. I do have a video on this channel called “Planning your first EV Camping Trip” that has some basic tips on how to get started👍🏻 Any specific questions you have let me know!
Great content! Is the Rivian capable of being further customized to include say a bushtec canopy or goosegear drawer system?
At this point I don’t see any products from those specific companies for Rivian - I’m sure over time more stuff will be available though!
Great video! Do you know if you would be able to run the Rivian through an automated car wash with the iKamper mounted on the back like you have?
Personally I wouldn’t risk it - it’s weather safe in rain and snow so maybe a touch-free automated car wash could work but not worth the risk to me of something getting damaged. I normally just hand wash or use a self service car wash 👍🏻

I actually did a video on how the rooftop tent affects range so worth checking that out. I haven’t noticed much of an efficiency hit from the other gear👍🏻

Hey! I don’t think the standard iKamper would fit it’s quite a bit longer than the truckbed
Since this video, I'd recommend using a Kammock for the awning. Also, you got to check out the Trelino composting toilet. It's a game changer.

Great video. Thoughts on rock sliders?
So far I’ve been fine without them but it’s definitely on my list of future upgrades. Unless you are doing some serious rock crawling they aren’t really necessary. I would prefer to have a simple rock slider and not a rock slider/step combo which is all thats available from the aftermarket currently. Hoping for more options soon!
Dang, you got the frunk 12V and the wood surround on the back of the headrests! Just got my R1T 3 weeks ago and it doesn't have either one.

Thanks! I use a bucket with a seat attachment that I picked up from REI - I believe it’s called the Luggable Loo
I just finished installing my Skycamp Mini 3 on my RIVIAN R1T and you don’t need to install it on the ground to be able to tighten the inside clamps. All you need is to feed the clamps with the bolts pointing the back of the truck and then reach from the tailgate and tighten the bolts with the long tool.

Looks great! is it easy to grab stuffs from Rivian truck bed? since it's blocked by iKamper. Do you have to remove iKamper every time you want to grab something?
It can be a little difficult if something is all the way in the front of the bed but hasn’t been a huge issue for me👍🏻
Have you noticed the vampire drain associated with the Rivian during your camping trips?
When I first got my truck yes I did notice some overnight drain (~5miles of range) but with recent software updates and the ability to turn off screens and other accessories in camp mode its much better 👍🏻

I was just day dreaming about having one of these cars. I think i would either design and build some kind of fold up house that I could mount on the back, or just pack a big bell tent. what might be a cool idea is an inflatable structure, like inflatable structural beams with canvas or tent materials as walls and with windows that you could inflate with the onboard air compressor. You could park up, open the truck bed with one button, and then press another and watch a big structure kind of grow into place on the back. Wouldn't be very wind proof but having a few choice poles added and you could make a pretty spacious thing if you designed it well. Could be a fun project. I think I'd extend it over the roof of the cab for the bed and have a living room bit further back.

@@ChargeOverland if that air compressor can be used in reverse then it would be nice and easy to suck it all back in again. Should be possible like those hoovers you can set both ways. Certainly lots of interesting options

Hey so this is like a genuine question, what do you do about battery life? It would be super dope if Rivian eventually does something with solar charging eventually.
Yeah that would be cool! I get 300+ miles with a charge which has been plenty to get to me out for multi day trips - definitely some really remote places I can’t access yet but so far I haven’t had any issues with running out of battery👍🏻
I know you installed it with the crossbar removed from the truck, but do you think it’s still possible to install it with the crossbars on the Rivian? Also, do you think the size of mini for sky camp mini or x cover mini can fit 2 adults + 2 young kids? Thanks for sharing.
I think it’s probably possible with the crossbar on the truck but would be tricky to get the tool in there. Both of the Mini series tents are probably going to be too small for 2 adults and 2 kids. You would need to opt for the X Cover 2.0 or Skycamp 2.0 which are going to overhang off the rear of the truckbed a bit.

What are your thoughts on the Rivian x Yakima Tent?
I had a chance to try it out and like the interior space/mattress but I wasn’t a huge fan of the setup time and overall appearance when it’s packed up.
Do you mount the tent backwards for aero purposes? I have a similar setup with my truck and Skycamp mini and I was wondering if that would improve my aero or not.
I actually ran some tests the aero is the same facing forwards or backwards (there’s a video on my channel) I actually prefer the look mounted how I have it and also having it open driver side👍🏻

There is no effect because the RTT is lower than the cab roof. If for some reason you raised the RTT(if Rivian adds lifts to make it level or higher than the cab), you'd definitely want the RTT facing downward slope to the tailgate as the video author has it...makes a huge aero difference.

Where is this location that you camped? I'm also in SoCal and looking for close-ish locations to make some first adventures in my new R1T.
This video was filmed near Santiago Peak but I didn’t camp here because unfortunately it’s not allowed - the closest locations for camping are probably going to Big Bear, Joshua Tree or Anza Borrego👍🏻
How much for the whole setup? I have a stock R1T but wouldn't mind getting it setup for overlanding
I’ve never actually added it all up but the iKamper is definitely the most expensive item at around $3700 from there probably another 2-3k for everything else 🤔
How did you route your phone mount wiring?
I’ve just got it running along the steering wheel column then over to the 12v under the dash - I have seen that the newer VINs don’t have the 12v under the dash sadly
@Charge Overland mine is missing the 12v. I think I’m going to make a usb c bulkhead connector right in that space

You could of mount the phone mount higher .
Looking forward to further developments of EV trucks with better battery packs. The issue now is that most our trips are 5-7 days off the grid covering over 500+ miles so there is no way an EV can handle that at the moment. We will have to stick to our Tacoma for the time being. It would be pretty cool to have our appliances and possibly air conditioning powdered off the truck's battery with EVs.

Love Rivian, but without VTL capability they really missed an opportunity.

More like $80-85K. Still a lot, but not nearly as expensive as the top end Ford Lightning $100K+ or Tesla X($115-125).
There is no way this can do water crossings that goes for all evs though not just this truck
It’s actually capable of getting through water 3+ feet deep - lots of videos out there showing this 👍🏻
I'll take a MB sprinter any day over the hype of a rivian.... better value and half the cost...

@Dixter in the grand scheme of things the company has made some pretty silly mistakes. Missing a spare isn’t so much a big deal. What they do about getting me a replacement is more important. Rivian should get a little leeway for doing their best and trying to satisfy as many deliveries as possible so that the company can stay viable. I get it.
And, For $80,000..You can have one, too! If you have $80,000 in JB's economy. Yippee!

You go into great length reviewing the iKamper mini 3.0...... but you haven't used it yet????? Why would you review a product you haven't even used? This is obvious at 12:15 when you review the bed and compare it to 2.0 but you quote company material comparing it to 2.0 and not YOUR experience. Is this a product AD? I love people showing me their builds. They live with them, give us, the viewer, their firsthand experience with the products. This is not that. First time seeing your channel, but it if you did proper reviews that you used in the past, then stick to that. If you did that with this, what is this? Pathetic. Live with the product, then tell us what you really think. Don't do this. If I wanted an AD, I would click on the AD
