I want to make a note about washing since nobody is talking about this. My first print was a large skull, it failed due to not enough resin in the vat so I did break tests with the printed 3/4. After a short wash and some curing it held up remarkably well for resin, surviving being thrown to the ceiling and landing on my Linoleum kitchen floor without damage several times.
Then later I noticed most of my finished prints were very brittle, one of them crumbling with little force after curing and being limp and squishable before final cure. I did some thorough testing and long story short, do not leave the resin in a water bath for more than 2-3 minutes, after 5 in the ultrasonic it is markedly weaker and after 40 the cured print crumbles like a cookie. I'm not sure if it is absorbing water/minerals or if something is leaching out, but overwash and you will be sad. Washed briefly and the resin is surprisingly strong.
I also tested air cure vs water cure, and while the water cured resin was slightly softer/more-brittle (most noticeably in thin supports), the difference was nowhere near as much as 3 vs 25 min cleaning. It looks like the resin is most vulnerable in it's half cured state right off the printer, if your UV oven is strong enough to cure prints quickly, you can probably still use a water bath if you want.

You should be using the basket insert in your ultrasonic. The idea is that the water or cleaning fluid is being vibrated and the model is not. the interaction between them creates the cleaning action and bubbles around the still model. If the model is sitting on the bottom and also vibrating the difference between the water and the model will be less and it will result in less effective cleaning.

With PLA, I can just melt it down into sheets and store it away for random projects and/or to await the day that a decent product for turning it into filament hits the market... with ABS, I can dissolve it with acetone to make ABS glue. depends on the resin, the standard photoresin is harder but more brittle than pla, the ABS like resin is like ABS, there is a TPU-like resin, and you can even get PC-like clears.
really you can compare standard resin to BPA-free water bottle material, like those Nalgene bottles. harder than strong.

I've mentioned this on another TH-camrs video on the elegoo mars. But chitubox doesn't let you know when a thumb drive is full. If there isn't enough space to store a sliced model, it will simply save up to the point the drive it full and you will end up with a model that prints till the sliced layers end and the printer will just freeze at that level. I was lrinting something solid that was a 12 hour print. About 6 hours in it just froze up. I was asleep while printing and woke up to a failed print. Cleared it off the build plate and just started it again to come back and find the same result. It wasn't till I decided to reslice the model that I discovered the drive was full.

Ok I have an odd question, when I use this stuff, if I pour (for example) 1 L of this resin into a vat, it seems like it is evaporating and losing overall volume. So let's say my print actually takes 1 L to print, at 10% of the print time it would mathematically be close to 800-900 ml usage (assuming I am printing a flat cube the whole way through the print), but it seems like somehow there is only 500-600 ml of fluid left and at 50% print time 1 L of fluid is empty...I noticed that the lid has a bit of a fog residue that I don't get with other types of resin. Do I have a watered down bottle that is evaporating or is this just the nature of this stuff, its not a 1:1 fluid to print usage? I notice in standard resin you need a bit more too, but nowhere near like this...if this makes sense? Also the room temperature is not really hot or anything, could be cold even and same thing happens.

The up side of using IPA is that it evaporates very quickly. So when it's time to dispose of contaminated cleaning solution you can simply leave a container open for a few days and the alcohol will disappear. Leaving dry cured resin to be thrown away. When using water, would you not end up with sludge and/or volumes of contaminated

  • @nosalis
    @nosalis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

To get rid of the waste, I heard the good with with IPA is that you can just leave it outside for the alcohol to evaporate and then you are just left out with residual hardened resin, that can be thrown out normally
but what would be the waste disposal procedure with water ?

    • @katanakid13

Largely the same. Leave the container of water out on a bright day, let the resin harden and fall, filter and repeat until it's clear water.

  • @jolliemark6294

Yes! The washing in the sink, put the water in a bucket outside and let it evaporate work be best, thank sc for saying something about the smell as I was wondering about that too. The plastic vats sound like a great idea too, but have heard that you get a little left in the lip of them, I was thinking that just let it set and put the vats out in the sun or cure it there might cure that problem. What are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing....Jack

Jeez this is great during the lock down. 90% Iso is super expensive now. Being able to use water would save a lot of money. My question is does this resin work with other printers like the creality?

Does the Water washable resin work with the Phenom Noir or L? ...or other large printers? I got an email back from Epax saying that water washable resin doesn't work in their larger printers because there is too much background radiation from the large screens.

water washable resin is the future. with more R&D, the current weakness (literally) of water rein can be overcome. but the advantage of not having to deal with (use of and disposal) massive volumes of flammable solvents cannot be overstated

    • @MrTobiable

What I have read so far, put it in a clear container and let the dissolved resin cure in the sun or under a uv lamp. Then it should be safe. Probably even better to filter out the cured resin pieces before putting the water it in the sink after that. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

I have a question if someone could answer it, I would be grateful. I just received my Mars a couple days ago and still learning about printing, during a print, a couple pieces that were to small to stick to the platform (my guess as to what happened) fell in the vat and I didn't know until after it finished, so the pieces that fell are now stuck to the clear plastic bottom of the Vat. What do I do to get it off?.

About to get an AnyCubic Photon delivered and I am yet to find someone that says what to do with the cleaning fluid (IPA or water based) after it becomes saturated. Many say that they cure the liquid to get the resin out of supervention and get rid of it with solid waste, but what do you do when your fluid itself has just run its course. For sure do not dump it down the drain, so what do you guys do?

You place it in a container then leave it somewhere safe so it evaporates. It'd be best in a place where there is direct sunlight so the water evaporates quickly and the left over resin is cured.
