- Dave gives the tour of his 2004 Peterbilt 379 Flat Top, inside and out. The truck has a 475 Cat, 3.70 rears, and has over a million miles on it.
Everything other than the exhaust system is original.
Turbo has been replaced twice.
Overall, it has been an excellent reliable truck..... unfortunate, 379's are no longer manufactured.

The 379 is a true Peterbilt. Reliable, goodlooking and very comfy. The 389 im not to sure about that Pete it has the oldskool design but the modern lights are a no go. Sir you have done a great job maintaining this Pete 379. And the 379 gives that back to you with reliability basicly showing her feelings by reliability.
Why not keep this truck for say truckshow events. Its rare to see a normal Pete 379 alot of them got all sorts of lights on them. This 379 is something special.

I don't know squat about heavy trucks OR the trucking business but THAT being said, I DO know a little something about business in general and vehicle durability factors.
This video leaves me with the impression that Dave is a time worn truck and trucking expert from the school of " hard Knox " who REALLY ought to be paid respect and attention to. It also looks like he has a real jewel and a keeper in that million mile " Pete ".
My second favorite truck next to its younger 389 brother. gorgeous truck, most iconic looking semi's on the road.

I have been driving for 15 years and the BEST truck I ever drove was a 2006 Pete 379 with a cat 500. The ONLY issue it had was likely overheating in the mountains. Easy solution replace old engine fan for radiator with electric fan. Great truck. I could see getting an old one and it costing like a new one restoring it. Would likely cost less over the long haul on being an owner op. also rides like a Caddy on the highways.

Beautiful 379 sir, I took delivery of my first truck purchased two months ago, a sexy 389 glider flat top, c15 cat rebuilt of course, straight 7" pipes, 280 wkheel base, 370 rear, low leaf, front air ride, smooth riding low rpm rollin train! next up is changing the seats out, ran out of money lol!
I wanted a 2000-2007 379 but went with a new '16 389 glider, kinda the same truck in a way, Keep that rig and show it off and pass it on to the kids and grandkids! Great video, and thank you for sharing this sexy Beast with us

Rumpa Stiltskin keep the HP down. Don't go 605, go 450 so the truck is working. That keeps the emissions equipment good.
That is my ideal set up in my humble opinion, always loved the Pete, knowing absolutely nothing about heavy trucks at all.
You didn't have trouble in a 1,000,000 miles because there was no DEF, and all the other crap the govt makes us do now.
I'm also a huge fan of the 379, though I no longer drive. Trucks that is. I recently went through CA on I-10 and I-5 on my way from Phoenix, AZ to Portland, OR, and I saw a lot of 379s on the road in CA. It takes forever to cross CA in a truck, because you are limited to 55 mph. In AZ, the interstate speed limit for all vehicles, including semi trucks, is 75 mph. CA is a truckers nightmare.

Thx for the video Dave, I've been trucking since 2000 as a company driver and im thinking about taking the plunge as a O/O. I find your videos very knowledgeable. I really miss the 03 pete I used to run, had real gages and plenty of them, none of the digital junk of today that are prone to premature failure.

I’ve always been a fan of those 379 flat top bunks. I’m now 19 and in college for diesel technology and one day hope to be able to buy my own 379. Not sure if I will ever haul anything with it but it’s just one of those things that I would love to have.
On another note, I really like how you logically think through things when specking out the truck you want to buy. It all makes sense to me
I would only do a mid-roof. I would use my bunk area whenever parked. Plus, the KW Studio sleeper is one of the best stock sleepers!

I am on your page man. I was at the auto parts store looking for a hand pump grease gun. You know the iron top with the long handle, just like everybody used before in the... um... simpler days. So I find one and go to check out. That's when I get the sales pitch on the latest and greatest Wonder Pumper 33,000,000 gadget. I told him that I want it to work forever and wasn't shopping for fancy. He just looked at me strangely, as he couldn't understand why I wanted the old fashion, labor intense model. But time has tested them and they last for centurys. I don't have faith that the Wonder Pumper 33,000,000 would make it that long.

CAT knew that the new regulations were going to cause problems and that's why they stopped building new tractor motors. I don't blame them. From what I've heard from numerous sources is that all this new emission equipment is making it nigh impossible for an O/O to even make money with the amount of down time for all the computer nonsense and resetting of sensors.
Out of all the major American motors (CAT, Cummins and Detroit) I'm glad I prefer the sound of a CAT over all else, since if I ever buy a truck, it'll be a glider with a rebuilt CAT under the hood. Something about that low rumble just makes me happy.
Oh yes, forgot to add, gorgeous rig Dave. Love that 379. It's the truck I grew up seeing everywhere on the road and came to love the looks of (even when I didn't really notice). While there is a huge advantage to driving a new aero cab (for people who pay for their fuel) they just don't have the looks at all. Even the new 389 just doesn't quite cut it.
Zeviander I've owned all 3 engines and certainly prefer a CAT. Yes, I've owned quite a few 379's over the years. Always loved the classic look... and still do. I'm getting used to the looks of the 389's but still not sold on them yet. (Dave)
Cat has a bad experience with emissions, just like everyone, lucky they had a choice on whether or not to leave the road engine industry, which they did. Maybe they’ll return someday soon? The industry sure could use another 600hp option. Volvo/Mack discontinued their’s. Heard first hand that their reliability sucked so no loss I guess?
I spent 10 years in a long nose C15, 13 spd, uni, 99-09. Best truck in the world. Almost 1.5M miles before a "in-frame". But with the fuel mileage and changing times, I sold it and went with the usps. If you can pull it off, there is nothing like a 379 long nose. We were the last "Cowboys". Times have changed, ELD's, full electronic's, auto-shift's, and 8 mpg's...really? Unheard of just a few years ago. Those were the days. Now, nobody even runs a 40 watt CB except for the Mexicans, and even they are a dying breed. No more stopping at the diner, no more stopping and backing up the logbook to stretch your back, kick the tires, or take an "illegal" piss on the side of the road. It has gone to hell. Trucks goverend at 67 mph, 5 scalehouses in 8 hrs. This sucks now, but what can us "old-timers" do but kiss ass and just keep on going...after all, we are still real truckers I guess. God Bless the 379!

You have a really beautiful truck Dave, who hasn't dream't of owning a truck just like yours. I know i have. But if i had to buy a truck today it would have to be spacious inside and be very maneuverable in tight places. I like the Volvo's with the I-Shift. I have driven them and man are they great riding trucks with space to stand and store stuff, a home away from home. But i sure love those classic Pete's and KW's. Thank you for sharing this video of your ride with us.
I have a 2002 Pete just like yours with the same specs except it has a 63 inch stand up sleeper. Motor has 1,450,000 miles on it. It's never been rebuild. I pull doubles with it and it gets 6.0 to 6.2 mpg. Best truck ever build
You are a very wise and experienced truck driver I'm sure you have seen alot and done alot. I'm a younger driver I drive for my farm . Loads going to the grain market and things going back to the farm. And I have learned alot from you.thanks

AJKandK Yes for sure. I'm experimenting with different mics and these GoPro cameras don't seem to like just any mic.... they need to be within a certain ohms range. I'm trying something different this week... hopefully there will be an improvement... sorry about the low sound. It's annoying I know. (Dave)

Yep. 2018 amd the truck is still running. That shows how relatively low stress life, regular oil changes, and of course the well engineered CAT engine can last long

I had a 2006 Model 379 day cab we used for heavy hauling. We were set up with a CAT 550 before that REGEN nonsense was in the mix. Two speed rears at 4.11 and 5.88. 18 speed tranny, and two Sisu axles on the tridem. WE pulled up to 13 axle traffic. Let's go to town, daddy!

I remember watching a wood truck in northern Ontario, my home, five axle trailer, driving down the road. Now, i heard it MILES before I saw it, i was at a truck stop. When this log truck came by, I couldn't believe my eyes: both lift axles had no tires left, duals, as it was 2010, steel rims, on the ground doing 90 km/h. Those rims weren't white when I saw them!

I love the older trucks, and hope to have a Glider one day. We have the 2010+ emission trucks and the ones that have just 400,000 miles on them are in the shop every week. I doubt these new emission trucks will ever reliably go over 1,000,000 miles
DrtyDiesel I've heard they are troublesome. When the time comes, I'll rebuild this motor, but refuse to buy new. Even those companies with their own shops, can't afford frequent down time. (Dave)
We have a KW t660 with the Paccar engine in it and it literally goes to the dealership every week. We get it back and it works fine 2 days and then it throws a code and back to the dealer it goes. It has 560,xxx miles on it
Holy Smokes. I was wondering how the Paccar engines were panning out.... I think Paccar had high hopes for them. That doesn't sound good at all.(:

It's definitely not. Guys from Europe have told me the Paccar Engine is a DAF design and DAF trucks over there are useless. Better to use the engine as a boat anchor instead of hauling freight. Because of these engines our company wont buy anymore KW's. I like the t660, but they need to order them with the Cummins engine at least. Someone at corporate most likely got sold on the "Better fuel mileage and lower cost" of the Paccar engine.
Paccar engines are rebranded Cummins. And, yes. Cat saw this emissions nonsense coming and decided to get out while the gettin' was good. We were an all KW fleet. The 08-10 they bought were all so troublesome, them sold them all by 12 and are now buying anything they can get their hands on with low miles /pre emission. Keep polishing that beautiful old girl of yours and rebuild major components as they break down. Not to be rude but you look just a little younger than me so I'm thinking you'll make it to retirement with what you have now. Keep it between the ditches! :)

Super singles DO give better fuel mileage, I've tested this on 3 different trucks.
However you're right to be leery, they are no good in snow. Pretty good in rain, though.

new trucks have become too complicated so the guys at the shop cant fix them, need to be online with the folks at the suport for that make of truck. my new volvo have been many of times in the shop and only 10.000 miles on it now. but i thought ahead and kept the old truck as a spare, that saved me from lot of problems having it to use. that is a 06 with full steel ride and as simple and durable as they came at the time, ewerything on that one is tested by time and works. last of the trucks with no after treatment.
its so good still i consider getting a driver for the new truck and drive the old myself fulltime for couple more years. following the latest trends just to be cool are not a good business plan.

I cannot WAIT until I can get an older truck, without any of the emissions and ELD bs. Currently saving up for one, but it'll probably be a while before I can afford it.
The modern trucks are too temperamental, and unreliable in general, although thank God I've had minimal issues with my Freightliner company truck. (The prior Kenworth T680 was horrific, and I traded it out ASAP)
But still, the more classic, manual, and un-automated the better IMO. I grew up with low tech machinery, and there's just something about it that's missing in newer equipment. Everything's gotta be mass produced and soulless these days. More important now than ever to keep the magic alive.
Had an '03 379 Extended hood with 600 Cat pre-emission/18 sp heavy haul triaxle, air suspension. Sure wish we didn't part with that beauty.

How’d you get around having the 280” wheelbase? I thought we were only allowed 244” in Canada.
Now see ,this is what I was talkin about when I said big truck..This looks like the ones we drove all the time, except we didn't have the flat top sleepers..but I cooked our meals on the truck goin down the road & I needed more room than what I had even..lol... but we ran hard & stayed right with it only stoppin to fuel..so this is what I call a large car..Oh,how I miss it but wouldn't wanna be out here now the way things are..but I hated runnin California..but if ya said anything about shuttin um down at the Port of Entry, no no,,those guys couldn't afford to miss one week of work..so had to keep goin,,, 55 mph...

Amen to duals! Had a company truck with super singles. They bought the better mileage baloney.
So then they went with a few trailers with them. Running a load from Michigan to New Braunfels Tx. Got near San Marcos running along in moderate traffic letting the 4wheelers flow past me a bit faster then I felt comfortable going
The TA north of New Braunfels has a habit of filling up on Sunday afternoons, and theres a small mom and pop in San Marcos I liked so exited and just as my trailer wheels went from the street to the parking payment there was a tremendous explosion with a feeling like something big in the trailer had crashed or something.
I watched a older trucker standung by his truck dive to the pavement.
Pull the truck and trailer brakes and jumped out. Going back on my side the rear super single had totally blown to shreds. Because I was barely moving the wheel was ok...But the mud flap and hanger were sheedded rubber ans pretzled steel on the ground. The Icc bottom was tore lose and drawn in toward the tire. I shivered thing what that would have been like running a couple minutes before around 70! The old boy who hit the dust came over and said his heart was racing and he's had a Nam flashback. A skinny guy and looked like he was pretty shook. When the survice truck had come and finished up the company bill probably cost more then running supper singles might have saved on fuel in a 100k miles. Don't even ask about trying to move the truck with those singles on in a few inches of snow around a parking lot with a empty trailer.
Just found a 1988 Freightliner classic with a double walk-in bunk customized sleeper from Micmac. 425 caterpillar 3406b nice looking truck well maintained has lots of paperwork for it thinking about buying it for my number two truck thinking about creating my own trucking company I have a health problem called Parkinson's so 35 years of driving it might be the end but I might start hiring

If that exhaust saved you half a MPG, thats like 15,000 gallons saved over a million miles. Well worth the cost I would say.
I love the olds but there’s been a lot of great things said and I’ve watched about the new x15 Cummins emission Engine I think some one had finally got it right

Do you buy your trucks in Canada or the US? For me, a non-trucker, a million miles sounds like a lot. How is that in trucking terms? Is that a lot or average for a used truck?
I bought my trucks in Canada, but the dealership here orders them to my specs and they are built in the U.S. A million miles is a lot, even for a truck, however the engines can be rebuilt and drive line components replaced and some trucks actually work for several million miles. Dave

Could you do a video on what truckers have to watch out for when it comes to getting fined? Of course there is speeding and American truckers can't mistake speed limits in Canada which are in kph not mph. I watched one video, a guys made his first run to California and came out with a $400 fine. He didn't say what it was for. He said different states have different rules. Do laws in Canada for trucking vary from province to province or is it all under federal laws?
No, the laws here vary province to province. It should be harmonized but Canada tends to be very backward in its thinking when it comes to trucks. Dave

How much did this truck weigh with a 53ft reefer ? I run very heavy with the company that gives me loads so I want a 389 but not sure If it will be too heavy.

Did you go to a Peterbilt dealer and spec the truck out are a website?
I go to the dealer and spec it with the salesman, then get a printout of the spec and check it to make sure there are no mistakes. Check the specs carefully, one by one. You've got to live with that truck for years and for the money you're paying, it should be exactly what you want. Dave
I'd buy this truck and build it...nice truck got all the bells and whistles..any classic pete with a c15 Cat is always a better truck...you should check out the 6nz Cat on your next pete...

I have a question for you that I've always wondered about... Why do OTR truckers prefer to sit so low in relation to the dash line to where the steering wheel is so high compared to where your shoulders are? I've seen almost all the truckers sitting like this. Is there some reason why this is the most commonly used seating position?

Your thoughts on engines now. I'm all about reliability over fuel economy or anything else. Would you go Detroit DD15 (595 HP), Cummins ISX 15 Performance Series (565 HP), Paccar 13L (505 HP); or maybe even the International A26 (505 HP). What would you pick and why?
Thinking Peterbilt 579 with the long & highest double bunks. Paccar MX13 at 510 HP with 1850 Torque.. Eatons Ultra Shift Plus 18 speed (because I'm new to the semi world), Paccar Axles with like 3.55 gears. And probably like 270" wheelbase. What's your thoughts? What would you change for maximum reliability, safety, efficiency and comfort. In that order.
Curious why did you spec a 475 and not a 600 cat?
If you were to spec a rolling glider now, what model would you get for your CAT?

LOVE your truck Dave. Very nice. I'm a huge 379 fan. I'm not a full time trucker, I just haul grain from our family farm for about 3 months out of the year. I have a question about my 1993 379 that you might have a little feedback on. You've probably had an older Pete like this in your lifetime. I think before 1994, these trucks didn't have air ride under the cab/sleeper. My truck beats me to death. I think it may need new shocks because it's a straight up and down bouncy ride. Feels like my head is going to hit the headliner sometimes and I have a Bostrom WideRide seat...and bridge/road joints sounds like the back axles are going to break off when I'm not loaded. Think the truck may need new shocks?
wjhuskey Check the shocks and the axle bushings. Without seeing the truck, it's what Peterbilt called their Airtrack suspension and it was a rougher riding system. It could be the shocks and bushings and they may need to be replaced. It's also possible to buy an air ride kit for your cab. (Dave)
