The Best Fish & Chips In Whitby

  • We recently visited Whitby where there are many fish and chip restaurants but the general consensus is that you either prefer Magpie Cafe or Trenchers. Naturally, we tried both....in one afternoon....to decide for ourselves.

    Went to the Magpie years ago and it wasn't great, chips and mushy peas were nice but my cod (largest on the menu) was tasteless so was disappointed, been to Trenches 3 times now and I love it, the staff are polite and efficient and every meal been top class. Perhaps I'll give the magpie another go . Both Trenches and The Magpie seem to get the longest queues in Whitby

      @@MeatsAndCheats I used to go there often. chips are a bit greasier but the only crinkle-cut chips in Whitby (as far as I know). They also serve haggis+chips, which for me is a nice change.

    I think three times I've been to the Magpie. Twice I got the upstairs table facing across the Quayside to the Abbey. Superb. Couldn't fault it. Generous portion of flakey fish in lovely batter with tartare sauce and lemon. Chips were great too. Must admit felt a bit stodgey afterwards. But a nice boat trip and a run up the 199 steps afterwards soon settled it. Looks like you were lucky with the absence of seagulls outside Trenchers ! I think your scoring was right .Magpie edged it......

      I went to the Magpie quite a few years ago, it was delightful, I had plaice and chips, (crinkle cut), I went there recently, bought some scampi and chips, bloody awful, for a cafe in a seaside resort to only sell haddock, cod and very mediocre scampi is a crime, and just lazy, frankly.

    I am 74. I love tish and fips - food of the Gods. I live 50 odd miles from the sea and 95% of the fish and chip shops sell crap. We have several well known highly recommended fish and chip shops but they are just not good enough or far too small a portion. I found one that served cod just like yours. It's a Turkish kebab takeaway. Funny old world init.
    I had found a packet of cod in the freezer at the bottom and my wife and eye had 2 fish each. I went to throw the packet in the bin and noticed that it was 4 YEARS passed it's use by date. OOPS! It tasted OK and we didn't die. We were very lucky but it does show how well food keeps in a freezer.

      @@MeatsAndCheats - Thanks for that. I cut out the packet and kept the evidence. Might have it framed. Stupid thing to do.
      There were cod once in the days of sailing as big as a mans leg. 50 odd years ago I bought a cod straight from the trawler sorted it, filled it with butter, wrapped it in tin foil and cooked it in the embers of a wood fire. I'll die with the taste of that in my mouth. Take care and don't let this evil bug bite.

Also on your review at the end near the pirate ship opposite to this is a posh restarant which is very popular and clean with the chefs wearing uniform and chefs hats not been in there either but looks GREAT if you want to treat yourself and as the old saying goes you get what you pay for ..once again great review.

    The Magpie wins easily as not only is the food fantastic, it's an experience to be enjoyed. It's a little unfair to compare Magpies dine in with takeaway. I'd settle for both but in the Philippines now, so unlikely. 😞

      We went last week to the Magpie and I assure you it's still as good as when you left old Blighty! Two medium cod and chips, large mushy peas, gin and tonic and a glass of wine all served by a charming waitress for under £40 . That is cracking value anywhere. That could be fair, based on what I saw in your Trencher's box. But inside, the portions are much smaller than in the Magpie, and the one time I went to Trencher's takeaway, admittedly close to closing time one day, the offering was so bad I had to throw it away, go home and make a sandwich: the chips were hard as a rock, and the fish had obviously sat around for ever. Obviously, I've never been back since.

    Not been to Whitby since the Covid in 2019 but been many, many times before that. Your trial did not compare like for like of course. Trenchers (sit in) simply the BEST. Went to the Magpie before the fire and found it very cramped - clearly Covid might have sorted that - but I ruined pair of trousers when eating their 'take away' on the pier , it was so greasy it soaked through the box. Trenchers inside is amazing, service is brilliant, the food is excellent whatever you have, fish cooked fresh to perfection, fish pie brilliant. And upstairs - I have never seen such spectacular loos - worth a visit just for that!

I noted the comment from another contributor about Trenchers portion sizes and being better under the old ownership. I have looked on companies house and discovered I must have eaten there with both old and new ownership - and noticed no differences. I used to detour off the A1 in order to get a Trenchers Fish and Chips on the way home to Derby from up t'North. The portion sizes you get as takeaways anywhere are smaller than inside I have found. INSIDE the restaurant I remember you decide between Small, normal and large fish. The large size - you need to starve all day to manage. But you MUST go inside and appreciate the decor and the Toilets upstairs are good enough to eat your meal in!

    Great vid folks. Born and bred in Cornwall and as a kid used to go fishing with my dad to catch Mackerel et Bass et Local fish and chip shop did the best ever 👍 and we've been around the UK AND abroad since.. 👀Fish on its own should taste everything you expect it to WITHOUT smothering it in sauce.. 🙄especially CURRY WTF!! 😶 At least they had 'Tartare' sauce.. The chips should be chips and not just CHIPPINGS.!! Lets all remember that the OIL used re frying can vary NOT forgetting how good, bad or indifferent the whole cooking process is.. 👀ALSO, lets remember that ALL reviews from whoever, wherever; are NOT absolute. The more good ones obviously the better.. but still NOT guaranteed apart from personal preferences, your taste buds etc! 😶 We also judge according to PRICE ie how much it stung your wallet and was it VALUE for MONEY?? Expensive might be acceptable for a couple but when its for a FAMILY?... 😶Stay safe, whoever, wherever you are.

Try Fussco's, Silver street fisheries, Eastside fisheries or the railway chippy rather than waste money on very expensive garbage..

    We have tried "Trenchers", and although it is very nice, it is way overpriced, also we have enjoyed the service and the fish and chips at "The Magpie" and again very nice but too expensive. Our favourite is "Hadley's which is near the Dolphin pub on the other side of the swing bridge, the fish and chips are superb, we go there every time now.

    Nope. Sorry. Visited the Magpie Cafe while on a trip from Australia after claims it had the best fish and chips. It didn't. The fish was oily, the batter ranged from gluggy and undercooked to thin and overcooked. The chips were equally unevenly cooked.

      Magpies may be the only place for fish and chips in Whitby (which doesn't say much for the options there) but I was told it was the best anywhere and, coming from Australia, that claim was never going to be stand up.

    • @antcox2006
      @antcox2006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bradad2026 when I say only place, I mean its head and shoulders above the rest. Yorkshire fish and chips is the best fish and chips in the UK - proximity to North Sea for cod, the history of Friday night chip shop tea and the shops that fry in beef dripping to give it that unique flavour. May be that good fish and chips is wasted on your or your palate ain't refined for our style of fish and chips

    • @bradad2026
      @bradad2026 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antcox2006 if you think refinement means eating fish for the taste of cattle fat then you need to get out more. I have no idea what ‘the Friday night chip shop tea’ has to do with the flavour of seafood but what I do know via first hand comparison is that we enjoy fish for ITS flavour, not the taste of the fatty clumps of batter that covered the fish we got from Magpies. You really do need to critically judge what you’re eating and resist living in the past.
