This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
I want to help make TH-cam the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere.

F.o.c. benefits accuracy because it pushes the center of gravity, of the arrow, closer to the front, allowing the fletchings to have more leverage on the broadhead. Higher focus setups also allow the energy to be more focused the tip of the projectile, which reduces deflection and improves penetration.

If you need to remove your inserts, there are a couple of videos about using a drill bit with nock removed. I just did 3 pile drivers and removed the aluminum factory inserts and replaced them with 100 grain brass inserts. I didn’t think it would work but it did!!! No heat needed. Took about 8-10 hits per arrow. Nothing damaged. All good. Ranch Fairy has a good youtube video on it. Just passing along. So now I have 100 grn brass inserts in place of about a 15 grain aluminum insert. They went in great and spin true. Just passing along. Made my day much easier.

I don't own a crossbow yet , but I have spent hundreds of dollars chasing the proper arrow sizes for my compounds. At first, I tried heavy arrows with heavy broad heads believing the "heavy" equals penetration theory. Those arrows had terrible trajectories. I found an article about FOC for arrows and I learned that 7 to 12 % FOC works best for Bows. There are two forces working on arrows after leaving a bow. Gravity and lateral trajectory. Arrows leaving a bow with a high FOC will nose over fast like a fat kid and a skinny kid on a seesaw. Plus the pull of gravity along the shaft pulls them down. I have found that the least FOC, allowing for stable flight gives better trajectories by reducing the lateral arc. My bow has 3 pins on the site. Middle pin is dead on from 10 yards to 40 yards. Bottom pin for 40 to 60. I don't shoot game at 60. Top pin is for tree stands. Dead on straight down to 40 yards. 12% FOC.

My excaliber calls for use of 150 grain broadhead which would give you a higher foc than your 100 grain! Perfect shot placement anything will work. It's the marginal shots where that extra punch from a higher foc will really shine. To light and it can simply deflect off a rib bone where a heavier head and foc will punch and plow through with way less effort

Great video. With a properly balanced arrow broadhead choice is much less critical in regards to accuracy and arrow flight. Excalibur has their stock stuff set up pretty good and outside of using a 125 fixed blade I stick to that formula also.

I agree that FOC is less important with a crossbow than a vertical bow. However, it provides better penetration guaranteed (in cases where you hit something like a shoulder blade) better accuracy in many cases, and a quieter bow. In many cases it won't matter. If you ever make a less than perfect shot, it might make all the difference.

I run a 500gr total carbon arrow with my crossbow but only 6.8% foc, I can guarantee it hits harder and has more penetration than your 400gr bolts regardless of what FOC you have. Total arrow weight is the major deciding factor in penetration, and as long as you have ANY foc above 5% your arrow will fly like a laser beam.

There has been some discussion about going with healthy FOC, AND shooting total arrow weights in the 650 grain category, tipped with a cut on contact, single bevel broadhead to achieve what most people don't/won't consider, and that is, taking quartering to shoulder shots. Supposedly, this total arrow weight has the potential to actually break the shoulder bone and pass thru the vitals. Anybody got any experience with this? My arrows are just over the 500 grain mark with a lighted nock and 160 grain two blade broadhead. I would take a slightly quartering to shot, shoulder forward, but would not aim at the should bone, only just behind it.

So, being a long time firearms guy and traditional bow guy, this got me thinking about ballistic coefficient and length of arrows. Now, DbB, I know y0u always recommend going with what the manufacturer recommends, BUT I'm wondering if longer arrows with longer (4") fletching might also help down range accuracy. Would higher F.O.C. + longer length (allowing the fletching to have more leverage, as williammocaby said) + 4" fletches allowing more surface area for stabilization create truer flying arrows? And there is the concept for your next amazing video!! (You're welcome! **WinK**) Hunt safely, my Friends!

Thank you and I very much enjoy all of your shows that you produce. I honestly wish you were a television show and or produced shows on DVD that I could purchase and collect for future references. That being said, I got the notion to get into shooting a crossbow and that lead me to your channel and I am hooked. I now have my crossbow and looking forward to the upcoming season... finally my question... you mentioned using a 100, 125, and a 150 gr. tip ? yet you dismiss the front of center theory... so do you use just a 100 gr. broadhead ? Or all three or ? I have a Carbon Express Pile Driver 390. I am pleased with it so far. It's smoking fast... especially compared to my late 80's compound bow... very accurate so far. I am a little dismayed that the manufacturer provided zero information on the arrow and broadhead selection or specs. But I am using as you say what came with it, same arrow and a 100 gr. tip and the luminous noc. What would be or would there be a advantage to using a heavier broadhead ? Isn't that the front of center theory? So as long as my accuracy is good, use of a 100 gr. broadhead is fine ? I never knew this stuff back in the 80's with my compound bow. My bowsmith set it all up and I sighted it in and it all worked lol... one last thing. I know you did a video when you upgraded your scope. Can you do another one showing more and current and comparable.... ? Thank you and continue to keep the programs coming. Very informative and professionally done. I am a retired Marine and a retired Gunsmith who is just enjoying life now and this crossbow stuff is a lot of fun and great addition to add to my hunting season. Gets me out in the woods again during archery season.

I feel like I could see the difference in FOC in the days when I shot a compound bow, and a 28" shaft. I could actually see the arrow settle down faster. With a 20" bolt I can not find any difference, except that actual weight of bolt changes performance.

Rich, as noted on my previous posts from some of your other videos, I will soon have my Micro 335 Kryptek Raid crossbow. I was informed by Excalibur's Customer Service (They have been great in answering my many questions.) that the Raid package comes with 150 grain field points. Now, I have to consider 150 grain broadheads. (There has to be a reason why Excalibur sends 150 grain field points with their 16.5 inch Quill arrows.) Naturally, that generated another question for Excalibur Customer Service: Is the factory package of 150 grain field points and the 250 grain Quill arrow rated at the stated 335 fps? The answer was no; the 335 fps was with a 100 grain tip. (They did warn not to go less than total tip and arrow weight of 350 grains with the Raid package.) So getting back to FOC, have you experimented with your setup to achieve the recommended (Who recommended?) 12% - 18% FOC?
Too many questions and too little time! Lol. Please keep the great videos coming! They are a lot more interesting than MSM!

I see your other videos (more recent) you install weight on G's ( not try to spell her name) arrows, so I see you started looking more into foc, I'm definitely adding more to mine but I need more weight any was because I'm shoot 200lb limbs and using 20inch pile driver's, I'm just trying to figure out what Is a cood whitetail set up for a CP amped, should I be around 650-700 gr minimum with that bow or heavier, 200lb x5( min gr) that is 1,000, I want it to stay together and quiet, I will mostly shoot within 30 in the hills of KY, can you see my predicament, how much and were should I add inserts?? Please help BUNJI

I do like heavier arrows on the slower crossbows like Bunjie and Genevieve's Bunjie, Jr. but on my newer one, Bunjie III, the Scorpyd Deathstalker, shooting around 400 ft per second, I have no interest in that. I just put on a 150 grain broadhead and call it good! Plenty of penetration and lots of speed. That is the benefit of modern crossbows.
