my puppy is 4 months old and she loves learning tricks! she knows: sit, down, touch, paw, high five, wave, stay, and to lie down and get on her side. sometimes when I see she has a lot of energy or wants to move, I'll throw some kibble and call her back. so she gets to run and we can work on recall! I also use this to break up training if she's struggling to pick something up and may want a mental break. otherwise, if she's already physically tired, we can just work on variations of paw, touch, wave, high five, sit, and down :)

Good morning sir, I just wanted to say that your videos are very constructive, I love that you break down each maneuver emphasizing on what’s a marker, to the command, to the fallow through and how to go about training step by step. My fiancé and I are hoping we can get a dog in a few weeks from a shelter, and your videos have given me a lot of confidence going forward on how to build a relationship with the dog while maintaining, and furthering training for both the dog and myself in a fun manner. I believe it’s going to be a great experience and I have you to thank. Thanks again!
If you're looking to learn more about dog training, maybe you can join my next trainer course. I'm planning to hold a dog trainer course once every six months, and my most recent videos showcase some of the training I've done with my current students. However, please note that space will be limited and the course will be offered only to a select few people. And if you're still exploring other options, I've heard great things about TRS as well.
Thanks for your videos Nate! 🙏 Watched this series before getting my puppy and slowly working thru it again now that he is here, and it has done wonders! By far the best training videos I have seen.
Wow. Great exercise for high drive dogs to get a training balance break. My dog is super low drive but I used some of these (like spin) to give her fun easy success, and praise like crazy to amp up her enthusiasm for the work.
What kind of dog breed do you have? My puppy works for her lunch meal and I feel like the idea that training tricks is really worth it has helped her also to enjoy training generally more.
That was fun to watch.. she was also enjoying it.. I need to find your video where you teach the "free" command.. I would worry about my BM nailing my hand in jump up.
Thanks! Here is the video on teaching the terminal marker "Free": th-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps and thank you again for supporting the channel. :)
Hi, I have a couple of quick questions. First, for the touch game/command do you have to ever worry about the dog biting your hand? Are there any tips to make sure your dog is just touching your hand and not trying to grab it? My second question is about the marker while training these three tricks. In the examples you use the continuation marker "yes" is there a reason why you would use this instead of the terminal one "free"? It isn't as intuitive to me because the dog isn't holding the spin, touch, through like they would a sit or down. Then again, maybe I am over thinking it.
Great questions Kaylee! For the hand touch, I never had a dog bite my hand instead of touching it. If they mouth at my hand, the I would withhold the reward until they did it correctly. If I'm still shaping a behavior and I'm not using the verbal command yet, then the stay isn't being practiced. I only require the dog to stay when I say the verbal command. Also, If the command can't be a stay, like the spin or through, then you can use the yes or the free. Hope this helps and thanks again! :)
@@kayleenelsen1280 I used the touch command and turned it into a kiss trick. I can make my dog touch my lips or the lips of any person that I point to. She has never bit me even when I was luring with the treat in my hand. I will say that she gets a little clumsy when she gets amped up. She has missed my lips and "kissed" my eye once - ouch. She's only 6 months and she's getting better every day.
The spin is counter clockwise in the right hand but clockwise in the left. That messed me up when teaching my puppy....just in case someone else is also wondering...
Yes, if you wanted your heel command to be on the right side, you can spin clockwise. If you have your dog on the left, like I do, then it’s always counter-clockwise. 😁🐶
Hey, Nate!! Your videos are so incredibly helpful. I've been training my two dogs for a year now and they've gotten quite advanced, but I loved your methods so much I decided I wanted to go back all the way to the start (teaching yes and free, and luring) to build an even better foundation for their training!! I was hoping to get your thoughts on that, and also, if I am right handed, do you recommend I do my heel on my left? or is it consistently better to keep them on your left regardless of your dominant hand? Thanks a lot!!
Love this!!!!! How do you keep the dog from biting your hand when doing something like the jumping up to your hand trick? I have a 3 mo old eager puppy who I feel would totally bite my hand every time trying to get the little training treats!!
Thanks! Start with luring and power steering. This will help teach the pup how to take the food from your hand without biting your hand. :) th-cam.com/video/Qq9KOcUlqN0/w-d-xo.html

Only if you're doing a sport that requires the dog to be on one side or the other.
