randomly got recommended this but i agree 100% thing is i thought everybody listened to music this way and it hurts my soul that this idea of consuming music and really listening is just lost now and it takes up so much space for artists and musicians that really create with a purpose and CARE about what they’re putting out. i’m glad you had this experience it opens up a whole world for your brain to listen to other genres and music its sick to see.

Facts. I like earl because i relate a lot to his thought process when it comes to music tbh. I'm almost physically incapable of listening to playlists. And I usually obsess over one album or artist for weeks to months on end before moving on to something else. I study the shit i listen to and love religiously. I have a personal bond with the music I love. Hard to do that with playlists (Although obviously not impossible, discovered a lot of great music through video games. Good times..)

I used to consume music this way for a long time until I got really into streaming music that completely changed the way I consume music now, to a point where I can’t listen anymore without having this overwhelming dread and distain for music no matter what I listen to. (Sorry for dumping on you but I think it’s a healthy way of listening to music and artists you love. Might have to go back to this)

when you think back to how music was commonly listened to before streaming, you realize that artist's intent was to follow the tracklist. skipping a song, shuffling, or jumping to the specific song you want to hear was never apart of the orginal idea. each song contextualizes the next. i was born in 2006 so i grew up with spotify and music videos on youtube, but recently i've started to go to the record store to buy my favorite albums. listening to them through the cd player in my car, or in my room, allows me to apprieciate the music more and gives me a whole different listening experience. the album artwork and inserts are always fun to look at and read, making it more immersive. buying the music with my own money gives it worth and makes me wanna listen to the album more thoughtfully. but on spotify i can be reckless and skip whatever song i want.

Nowadays, I try to listen to albums when I have nothing else really going on. Like on a walk or a hike or some place where you have no choice but to listen to the whole thing, and it's made me appreciate stuff so much more than if I'm doing homework or working at my job or something.

100 agree with everything. Whenever im listening to a full album i make sure to set aside enough time to listen to the whole thing front to back straight through along with reading the lyrics because i feel like that’s the only way to truly feel and understand the work. There is so much more to unpact than most people realize. Music is meant to be heard not only listened to in the background. Especially rap. like it’s not an aesthetic or something to post on your story with a pic of you to look hard lmfao that’s maybe just me though i need to isolate when i engulf in an album because I’m not trynna have random side conversations. Like you said, you wouldn’t do that at the movies. Music is no different if anything it needs More so attention physically, mentally and spiritually

I agree. I will spin individual tracks that are newly added to my collection of liked songs, but in general I don't listen to music on shuffle anymore. I mostly queue whole albums. Almost feels inauthentic to listen unintentionally. Like it's not that deep haha but at the same time I can feel the way it affects my psychology. I can feel it affect my relationship with listening.

Albums are great! Putting songs together inspires the process for the artist and the listener. When you get to see the songs as part of one larger piece you get more connections and thoughts with them. That being said a good playlist/mix can do that too fasho, shout out to the dope DJs. Hearing a well put together album will stick with you 💯🙏🏾

I knew I wasn’t bugging that I didn’t like playlists. I would always get overwhelmed to make one because I never knew what song to start with or making one that I can be like “ go check out my dope playlist” lol. Seeing everyone make one always made me feel I had I to make one. But that’s just not how I operate , I love albums , i love getting into the world of an artist you a gain deeper connection towards them and their art. And a deep appreciation of music and artistry , makes you open to different genres, different sounds. An album is supposed to be a soundtrack for your life when you see an album you have listened to it brings memories of a time and place you were in your life!!!

@@Otto2Wavyplaylisting is an art it’s self. the cover art, the song order, the playlist title. an album can have an incredible ambiance and as listeners we have the power to amplify that project by combing it with other work. My public playlist on here aren’t very defined but on Apple Music I have over 100. i like to make my own EPs in a way. sometimes I’ll paint my own cover for my playlist and upload it as the thumbnail

I’m really glad this came up on my recommended because I’m currently taking a break from consuming music for a month because I just wasn’t enjoying anything I consumed, even if I liked it before. I honestly blame streaming for the way I started to consume music and to my eventual dissatisfaction with it. I think having more intention with everything I consume will improve the way I appreciate a piece of work better with going back to listening to whole albums instead playlists of songs and the endless stream of music and artists that are recommended by an algorithm ( sometimes great recs don’t get me wrong). I love thinking of albums as whole movies that you have to watch beginning to end to appreciate the parts of the film you love that are more contextualised when you watch the whole thing. Quite a beautiful way to look at music. Thank you for this✨

If your just chillin vibin a playlist is great, but if you want to spend some time with music the album experience is richer. It’s like you say the attention aspect is key - when you give your attention to something and go with it all the way - movie, music, reading whatever if is - the nuance and beauty of the art itself is given the space to reveal itself. It’s like really respecting the vision of the artist and having the humility to give yourself over to it, that’s a way to experience things more deeply. preciate the thoughts brother. Also love those 2 chance songs you mentioned, How Great and Finish Line/Drown are underrated gems that can easily get lost in the mix on such a great album, like you say, because theyre slow burns. Beautiful songs. Cheers!

Appreciate your perspective, I also feel the same way that music should be appreciated more in album form the way it was intended, but I don’t blame people taking away certain songs and moments from the album that they really like, I mean I do it. And I agree heavy on what you said at the end, people who be playing albums from shuffle are crazy, like you wanna disregard all the effort the musician put into sequencing an album and creating an atmosphere, that’s like one of the worst ways to play an album.

I agree, digesting music in the format of an album will always be the best. I really felt like that when I started making music and it’s just a feeling of wanting to convey a a specific set of emotions and certain themes, I feel like that is missing a little bit in the industry today, that microwave meal analogy was kinda spot on,
Everything is easily digestible and simplified nowadays which I think takes away from an artists ability to connect with their audience on a deeper level and articulate themselves.

    • @Otto2Wavy
      @Otto2Wavy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

For sure, as I'm slowly finding myself in my art (imo) I'm learning that being able to articulate myself to myself through music is key - and then hopefully that translate to an audience (if i ever do have one)

I think we should all listens to albums. There for sure a point in what he is saying, but what I also love about music is that you can re-contextulize songs into playlists. Its sort of like creating your own dj-set.
However albums with a curated album deserves to be listened to chronologicly. I think most sane people does that, but I wish more did.
I have certain albums i mostly listen to whole rather than in playlists. But on a day to day basis its easier to listen to playlist.
Its linke binging the office or any other sitcom. Everything is familiar and it has its moments, but you dont need to pay attention all the time.

Dude... 1000%%% !!! Happy this got recommended to me
I know the Earl clip you are talking about - and it's made me do more album listening lately as I had gotten lazy over the past year or so
Ironically though, before Earl said that quote, he changed the way I listen to music with his albums
When I listened to I don't like shit and Doris at first when I was in high school, I was confused, and didn't like most songs, but I was intrigued by his artistry, and I liked a song or two on each. I kept going back and listening to the album front to back and every time I listened I loved it more and more. And a song would click and I would be like how tf did I not like this earlier?? Crazy how music works that way. Art!
The other artist I had that same experience with is Isaiah Rashad. Cilvia Demo, Suns Tirade, Doris, IDLS are all special albums to me because as Earl said in that quote, I "endeavored to understand their complete idea" each of those still has one or two songs I don't like that I'll still skip sometimes, but I used to think "lliking an album" was listening to it and grabbing 4 that I fw and putting em on a playlist.
    Anyways, great video.

Especially when you don't make musix, idk, living vicariously through music you don't make is weird as fuck too me, like, just because you like something thats creative doesn't make you any more cretor have depth, you're just simply listening too it.
Fans have weird audacity nowadays, listen to what you like, it doesn't need layers or a sense of deepness for something to be enjoyed...if you enjoy something, enjoy it
