In the ending, the Salesman implies that masks contained the feelings of the people who gave them to Link. The ending itself also hints that the masks actually have an effect on the New Day. If you don't collect the Couple's Mask, then you don't see the wedding. Almost like the masks cause the events to persist outside of the loop... which may be why the masks are carried over between loops. Also, the Song of Healing does heal. It heals the souls of their regrets and those regrets become the masks. Another example of the masks as representative of feelings. Finally, you need to give Link a little credit. He saved the Goron and the Zora before he pulled the Master Sword and it's implied he somehow stops Ganondorf in the past. That said... the Salesman can sense Link's collection of masks in the ending and remarks on them. Creepy as always
The implication of Link stopping Ganondorf in the past is that he was able to warn Zelda on time, that's why the game ends on them meeting, apparently for the first time for Zelda. The events being linked to the masks and, therefore, allowing them to happen outside the loop, does make a lot of sense.
He didn't even mention the creepiest and weirdest parts. A. He shows absolutely no surprise that link literally just walked out the door, then back in with his ocarina, and what's more, expects the mask too! he clearly knows that link can time travel, and is aware of it. B. If you get a game over from the moon, you hear him laugh, and say "You've met with a terrible fate haven't you" You get a weird slow camera wobble and you are back in the clock tower with him. not outside. THAT is a little bit weird? did he rewind time himself to save us or what?
Also, the Happy Mask Saleman moves poses without flowing through the motion, and makes an organ appear out of Nowhere. It is almost like he is out of sync with Termina's 3d reality.
That pose-and-face combo he’s doing... that’s a well-known expression in Japanese art. It basically signifies a “pushy salesperson” or someone whose pretending to be friendly and overdoing it. It’s a good clue he’s not what he seems.
I definitely feel it is a bit implied he is a evil wizard and a god of some sort, he is just trying to not let anyone know it. I mean, from my perspective, it seems wierd that he does not want to go out and get the mask. I mean, could he not go out and get the mask himself instead if sending a little elf kid to do it? lol. Who knows why he could not just do it himself if he really wanted majora's mask that badly. My guess is that he was hoping link would be able to bring the mask back in a weakened, but still revivable state. That would explain why he wanted it back, and why he seemed so dissapointed at the end of the game that the mask had lost all of it's power. He wanted to use it for world domination. But he is a mask collector as well after all. Or maybe, he is not a mask collector at all. He just calls himself that to give off the illusion of collecting mask as prized possesions. I mean, that is what i would do. Misleading people is atypical of a cult evil god person.
Notice when the mask salesman says the evil left the mask, he almost sounds disappointed. I think he stole the mask possibly wanting to dominate Termina.
Everyone thinks he's evil. I feel that's too cliche. He may have been disappointed or maybe just sentelmental. I feel the more likely theory is that he was one of the members of the ancient tribe who originally used the mask for hexing rituals. Maybe he holds regret and as one of the last members of his tribe vowed to keep the mask safe. So that it never is used for evil again.
A theory I've always liked, is that the Happy Mask Salesman is Shigeru Miyamoto himself, manifested as this bizarre entity or god within the universe of Zelda. I know that may seem kind of random, but it's been a prevailing idea in the community for awhile that his character design, specifically the face and hair, was based on Miyamoto (I think it was even confirmed once?), and that his aggressive nature towards Link is a bit of projection by the devs of Majora's Mask on how they viewed Miyamoto at the time (Miyamoto initially only allowed them 1 year of development time, not to mention Miyamoto was known to "upend the teatable," as Aounuma once put it). If he is Miyamoto, that would explain all his strange, and dare I say impossible knowledge, along with his unwavering faith in Link. Perhaps he's even aware of the player on the other side of the screen? His poetic line at the end of the game, about how goodbyes not having to last forever, to me felt like it was aimed at more than just Link. At the very least, the dude actually has a Mario mask on his back, so I think that's noteworthy. Even his profession as a "happy mask salesman" could be likened to that of a videogame developer. Not just any videogame developer, of course, but the developer of some of the most globally recognized and beloved videogames to date. That's a ton of happiness he's selling right there... It would be fitting that the true god of the Zelda series who pulls all of the strings was NOT Hylia, but rather, the man who birthed the series in the first place.
Take my thumbs up as well. I have never heard this theory before but it is excellent. I'll never look at the happy mask salesman the same way again. When I finished reading your comment the X files theme popped into my head.
Love this theory, also makes sense with him telling link to return back to Hyrule now that the game is over as in the developers should go back to doing planned games as scheduled (this as you said was a side project Aounuma wanted to do and Miyamoto somewhat begrudgingly allowed under crazy timetables). I had heard he theory of his model being based on miyamoto but had never followed that metaphorically to this game in particular, thanks for commenting!
with tat line "the evil has left he mask after all", I get the feeling he LET the skull kid steel the mask. He knew Link was there and knew he was the one to purify that mask.
He said that the mask was used by a tribe and that it was sealed away so my question is how did he get his hands on that mask and what was he planning to do with it because it didn't seem like he was happy when the evil spirit left the mask so I wonder what was a mask salesman planning to do with a cursed item like majora's mask
@@swayamdabral4877 he may have been collecting them to keep them from going to someone dangerous such as a one piece theory is shanks collects devil fruits to prevent others from using them for evil
Hey man, I drink beer for breakfast. Also, anytime I see an HG video I have to roll a joint before I watch it because the bastard tells me to get a snack and a drink. So a beer and a joint it is.
I agree. Perhaps the moonchildren represent the personification and illustrations of majora and majora's relationship with the happy mask salesman. That would make sense if he was indeed involved with past actions with majora. I feel that, majora and fierce diety were likely both involved in large scale battles somehow. Majora was sealed into a mask via the song of healing, as was fierce diety. Fierce diety seems to function like the other beings put inside masks. You wear it, and you gain all the abilities of the character. Majora on the other hand, seems to be on godlike demon status himself. Skull kid puts on majora's mask, and gets charmed and puppeteered by majora, presumably because skull kid has a weak and manipulative mind. So it does seem majora does indeed have the ability to bend minds to hid will to an extent. But what about a super strong mind? Would this be controlled the same way? If we are using the logic of the other transformation masks, you would assume skull kid would just straight up turn into the being we saw in the moon. After all, all the other masks in the game grant these features.
If the HMS is a deity, he may have made Termina as a favor to Link (for his help selling the masks in OoT), rather than a test. We see in Twilight Princess that the shade regreted not being remembered as a hero, so HMS gave him a quest. Furthermore, it could also be a sort of learning opportunity to remind him of all the good he can still do, and to process having done such a great good that no one remembers.
Me too. I think he's a guy who has come across some powerful things in his travels. He might have some powers over time such as foresight or time travel due to his knowledge and his jerkyness in cutscenes. He seems a bit insane, possibly die to all the things he's seen.
@@JadeJuno thing is, finishing the mask side quest in oot yields you the mask of truth. Why would he have that?...Unless he's of sheikah heritage? After all, the lens of truth were made by the sheikah as well. And if you compare the two with majora - who grows a third eye by the way when it goes incarnate/wrath mode - color palette wise and then look at malice and it's eyes in botw... Yeah, the sheikah has messed with powers of malice before. We never find out who the man that used to live where the well is. What's interesting is the song of healing is Saria's song backwards. She does say the forest connects to many places. One side, you could talk to the forest spirits, the other side you could "heal" troubled souls and turn them into masks. What if... redeads are made this way or a very similar manner? The mask's power ripped the soul out of someone and the song of healing made a mask out of it. Oh yeah, remember that "wooden mask" he loans you? Talk to dampe with it on. Highly sus Happy mask salesman has one of those as well.
Or maybe it’s a paradox😳 he says “you’ve met with a terrible fate haven’t you” because the time loop has already occurred for him where termina is destroyed. He already knows about everything that happened, and it’s why we always get the “you’ve met wit a terrible fate” line when we die.
I just see the initial saying as the start of the loop instead of a continuation, and all game over sayings of it are the loop starting over. Basically he traps Link into a loop he cannot escape without completing the contract with the Happy Mask Salesman. Though he is aware of the loop, he doesn't know every event of each loop because he is initially unaware Link hadn't gotten Majora's Mask from Skull Kid. Obviously he knows the secrets of certain "masks of power" because the Mask of Truth, a Sheikah artifact is the final reward for completing his "trial" by selling the previous masks in OoT. He follows Link to Termina (likely having sought him out after losing Majora's Mask) and begins the loop. What is never explained is WHERE the Salesman found Majora's Mask. Did he find it in Termina, or did he bring it from another land? If Majora's Mask originally was in Hyrule before being found and lost by the Salesman, then theories of it belonging to the Twili or Zonai would be even stronger as those are tribes native to mainly Hyrule. Maybe the Mask was how the Zonai disappeared? Maybe it was used as a weapon in attempts to steal the Triforce which led to the Twili being exiled to the twilight realm? The famous cutscene in Twilight Princess clearly shows many people betraying each other and faces change constantly in the scene (like masks). Maybe this event is why the Mask was sealed away (or someone was transformed INTO Majora's Mask). Maybe the Mask is like a prison (a premise that the non-canon manga hinted) and that concentrated malice overflowing drew the lonely and "betrayed" Skull Kid to it. The events of Wind Waker prove that in times absolute necessity, the goddesses will personally act upon the lands of the world. Maybe by dropping the moon upon the world, Majora was trying to specifically trying to force their hand to personally get revenge. What if the THEY led Link to Termina? Maybe the Happy Mask Salesman is one of their messengers or "agents" sent to observe Link. That could explain some of the inhuman "air" around him. But that's just a theory...
I feel it would be cool as a timeline split as well. We get to see the timeline that occured when link failed to save termina. Life would rebirth somehow at some point. Idk, would be an interesting game concept.
I personally think that possibly...the mask salesman is a time traveller, like Link himself, who witnessed the battle against Ganon, which is why he says to Link that the task of retrieving the mask will be an easy task for him
I agree with this. Also the way he kind of just teleports to different poses without you seeing him move could be explained by him just kinda skipping through time in short increments
In all honesty, i just came up with this theory, that maybe, in all actuality, the happy mask salesman, is not a happy mask salesman at all. Perhaps he goes under this alias to give off this illusion of him being a mask salesman, when in reality, he is a shapeshifting evil cult god like guy, that in actuality, has the power and ability to do a ton of wierd and unexplained things, perhaps for evil purposes. He could be a shape shifter as well.
I mean, him sounding surprised at the end of the game that the evil had left the mask for example. Why would that be a bad thing if he is a good guy? Or a good god if you will. I also found it kind of strange that instead of going out and retreiving the mask himself, he made a young elf kid do it. But yah, him being a time traveler i would believe as well. Perhaps he has a mask that grants him the power of time travel to or some shit. My guess is that he sent link on this mission, knowing that he would be able to get the mask back, but made some miscalculations or something. He was hoping link would bring the mask back in a weakened state, so he could revive it, and further use it's powers for bad shit without link or anyone really knowing. He underestimated how powerful link truly was.
To me, maybe he is not a time traveler, per say, but is basically the syth lord of the zelda universe. The entirety of star wars in the prequel trilogy has chancellor palpatine, who is actually a syth lord, pretend to be on the side of the goods to get his evil ambitions pushed through. He is basically pretending to be someone else to further his own evil goals. Star wars was very much relevant around the time that ocarina of time and majora's mask were out as well, so maybe this got influenced in majora's mask somehow. Maybe not, but i believe the happy mask sales man might not even be a mask salesman at all. He could just be a dude who collects masks, with the intentions of harnessing the powers within the masks, perhaps in some cases, being the reason the mask's have the powers that they do in the first place to further his own evil goals. Going out in the world, to get the masks, he goes out under the pretense of being a mask salesman/mask enthusiast, in order to get as many masks as possible. Then blesses them with whatever powers he wants to.
I would compare him to an Observer from the tv series Fringe. Observers are people that travel through time to witness past events. Also they are able to exist outside of time. The Happy Mask Salesman is a guy that can traverse time and space at will, but mostly stays in the background. That is how he knows about Link's adventures in OoT. The only reason he got involved with Link in Termina is because the Skull Kid stole Majora's Mask. As to why he had the mask in the first place, he could be immune to it's corruption because he exists "outside" of time. He also might collect and sell masks to hide the fact he has a power mask on him.
Definitely a Demigod. I feel like we’ve seen plenty of other characters that also fit that criteria as well-not all are benevolent and I always kinda loved that about the franchise.
@James Gravil actually, now that I think about it, the happy mask salesman would be a really cool character. If his power was turning people to masks he could kinda be like Kirby.
The Happy Mask Salesman mentioned that Majora's Mask came from an "ancient tribe" that has now vanished. One of my theories is that the Happy Mask Salesman's ancestors were members of that tribe and that the tribe's specialty is creating masks that contains the essence of a being. It would explain why the Happy Mask Salesman knows so much about Majora's Mask (where it came from, what it's capable of, the fact that he found it and has it in his possession) but doesn't have specific information on what happened to the tribe. Said tribe may have been the ones who created the Song of Healing and the Happy Mask Salesman may have learned the song through research or the song was passed down. Assuming that the tribe originated in Termina, it would explain why the Happy Mask Salesman is in Termina and why he's the only one in Hyrule who's fascinated with masks. As for why he's in Hyrule, perhaps he found Hyrule during his travels and decided to set up shop. The children in the Moon have a resemblance to the Happy Mask Salesman. Since we know that the Moon's interior is...off, it may suggest a connection between the Happy Mask Salesman, the boss masks, and Majora's Mask. If we assume that the tribe that created Majora's Mask can create masks that contains the essence of a being, we can assume that they also created the boss masks since each mask contains the essence of their respective bosses. The fact that the children look like the Happy Mask Salesman may be an allusion to his connection to the tribe. Lastly, 3 colors stand out on Majora's Mask (the mask itself, not the game): bluish purple, red, and yellow. The Happy Mask Salesman's design has a lot of these colors. He wears a bluish purple coat, has reddish hair, and wears gold jewelry. This design choice may be an indication that the Happy Mask Salesman's connection to Majora's Mask is more than "the guy who found it."
I never actually noticed how Majora's Mask and the Happy Mask Salesman have similar color schemes. I feel like that's probably a coincidence, but I can see the Song of Healing having been a product of the tribe. On the subject of Termina, there's a bit in Hyrule Encyclopedia that I feel is relevant. While the book is mostly known for stating how Termina is created by Majora's Mask and Skull Kid with its population based on the latter's memories and how it disappears after the ending, it *also* teases that Termina's culture may've been influenced by the tribe that had the Mask. At the least, that might support the idea that the tribe was associated with masks, since Termina and Clock Town have such a fascination with them. I like the sound of this theory, really. Biggest problem I see is the assumption of Termina having been a real place prior to the Mask being stolen, but even then that doesn't kill it entirely considering the tidbit about the nature of Termina's culture.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Yeah, I never read the Hyrule Historia/Encyclopedia. Maybe Termina is not real after all. I heard that the Hyrule Historia/Encylopedia is a fairly reliable source for Zelda lore, but Nintendo is no stranger to retconning. Maybe one day, they'll retcon the lore from Majora's Mask and confirm that Termina is a real place.
@@JCW5713 "no stranger to retconning" is right lol. Encylopedia even retconned the timeline from Historia, putting Link's Awakening before the Oracle games; I guess to dissuade any ideas that Link died after the events of LA. I've seen some theories that Nintendo might try to retcon the whole timeline with BotW and its sequel, but I kinda doubt it myself.
My personal theory is that he's an immortal magic-user who travels the world(s) looking for magic artifacts, and keeps them safe until he can find the right heroes to rid them of evil power. We've only seen him three times because only two incarnations of Link have interacted with him, and only one needed his help in only one adventure. Who knows how many adventures he's been involved in that we'll never see.
That theory will also explain how he is in the oracle games since they are in the fallen hero timeline taking place after ALTTP which would hundreds? Of years after OOT. Or maybe... He secretly went to the future with link and came back with him and that's how he knows it wouldn't be a big deal for him... Or maybe he has a mask that shows alternate timelines and thats how he knows... Oh I see the rabbit hole you spoke of now...
Or the mask could have some sort of life extending abilities like the ring from Lord of The Rings ( bunch of similarities there ) since in the down fall time line the mask was never removed from his possession.
Or, more simply, its not the exact same character. Just like how it isn't the same Link or Zelda in every game, or how there's multiple characters resembling Malon amd Talon even outside of OoT and MM
Perfect timing I was just checking for a new video on the Zelda series to get me in that Nintendo vibe for my sketching Edit mid-sketch: I agree with the God theory, and for my reasoning I’d like to point out the Horned statue and Malanya being referred to by themselves and others as Gods and I find it completely plausible that the Mask Salesman could be in that same vague class of “lesser gods” if that makes any sense
@@HyruleGamer thank you for the inspiring videos! It’s always such a relaxing thing to have a good Zelda theory playing while drawing, keep up the epic work!!
He cant be a normal hylian or terminain cause he knows about the deal made with Link 3 days before. The clock tower is strange as time does not pass there. but even if both conversation happen frozen in time there cant be two conversations happening at once at 5:59 am.
We Dark Souls fans have an explanation for the clock tower. "Time is convoluted in Lordran." It is a line said by an NPC to explain why you can meet people from the distant past or future seemingly at random in Dark Souls. Essentially it is a place where time is both infinite in all directions but also folds back in on itself. I think because the clock tower leads between Hyrule and Termina, it is magical and partially disconnected from either reality.
I don't understand your point there at all. Are you referring to the cutscene after the first three day cycle, when you learn the song of healing and speak to him for the second time? Because of course he knows the deal. You return to just after he made the deal with him. Simply put, from his perspective he offered to help you if you retrieved the ocarina and the mask, you left, and maybe a minute later returned with the ocarina. If that scene is not when you mean, then I have no idea what point you're talking about, so please clarify because you don't seem to have a substantial point
@@Kahadi after both conversations u leave the tower just at the clock strikes 6 am so tha means both conversations took place at the same time but the mask salesman knows the deal made during the last 3 day cycle
I remember what I always assumed was that time not passing while inside the clock tower wasn't supposed to be taken seriously; it's just that way so the player has a refuge from the time limit, and that the clock tower's interior was somehow exempted from the time reversal effects of the Song of Time (maybe because it's part of the connection to Hyrule?). This raises the question of how the HMS knows how many hours are left before he has to leave however (and why he reverses his count whenever you reverse time), and I don't recall if Link's interactions with him indicate or disconfirm anything of what I just said; it's been a long time since I played MM or paid good attention to the early cutscenes.
That could make sense sort like how Loki`s powers were contained in a mask in son of the mask. If go by that theory he is the light side of Majora and the mask contains his dark half. And fierce deity contains all the fears hopes and dreams of the people of termina and allows Link to become vengeful God of the people the master also seems to be fueled by the triforce of courage as you see it on his breastplate
Despite how courageous and brave of a hero Link is. You can imagine how homesick he probably feels in this game. We can't see it in him. But he's still just a kid and for the entire duration of this game. He is completely separated from Hyrule. The place he grew up in. The place where he had friends like Saria, Malon, Darunia, etc. I mean even I end up missing Hyrule myself. And even Zelda herself.
Wow, what a bombshell of a theory video! No, seriously. This is one of the craziest theory videos I've watched about Zelda, and it's actually really good discussion material! I had never thought about those three theories on the Happy Mask Salesman before watching this video! Nice job with this one, HG. Also, you have a girlfriend? Nice, dude! Hope you two end up having lots of happy Zelda moments together!
the theory I've heard is that Happy is part of, or at least a descendent of, the same tribe that made/used Majora ages ago. That is why knows of it, it's dangers, and why all the Moon Children look like him.
I mean, i just came up with this now, but what if the happy mask salesman is just pretending to be a happy mask salesman, in order to further his own evil goals? Perhaps he goes out into the world under the pretense of being a mask salesman/mask enthusiast in order to get as many masks as he possibly can, so that he can give the masks powers, and take over the world or something. It is a stretch, but to me, it makes sense if he is a smart dude of godlike twilight cult status. He knows an awful lot about majora's mask and how it got it's powers. Maybe he is part of the reason why majora's mask is majora's mask. Belonging to an evil being called majora. He even seemed dissapointed at the fact that, when the mask was returned to him, it had completely lost all of it's power. I bring this up to, but i find it a little odd that, instead of going out and getting the mask himself, he would rather make a little elf kid do it. Perhaps he was hoping link would bring the mask back in a weakened state, and it was not brought back in a weakened state, and was not enough for him to revive it later. He was dissapointed that the power was completely gone. Then again, he could be pretending that he is dissapointed also. Maybe the mask still does have power, and he knows this, he is just giving the illusion that everything is fine now, and is working on exploitation as we speak. Trying to find as many masks as he can, preserving the power's within, to further an evil agenda of sorts.
Honestly... him being a God would be one of the only theories that legit make sense. Never thought about it but yeah, it checks out to me lol. Awesome job man
One HUGE flaw with this theory, a flaw that disproves a lot of theories about this game that just about everyone seems to forget: LINK DID STILL SAVE HYRULE FROM GANONDORF. Despite being sent back in time to before grabbing the Master Sword and thus not fighting and killing Ganondorf as he did in the adult timeline, he did still stop Ganondorf and save Hyrule. And everyone knew of his deeds. The evidence is right in the opening of Majora's Mask, lines just about everyone seems to forget, ignore, or dismiss despite disproving a lot of theories (especially the stupidity of the Hero's Shade, but I won't get into that one). What lines? In the land of Hyrule there is a legend. A legend held dearly by the Royal Family that tells of a boy. A boy who, after battling evil and saving Hyrule, crept away from the land that made him a legend... Done with the battles he once waged across time, he embarked on a journey. "A boy who, after battling evil and saving Hyrule...", "Done with the battles he once waged across time" So what does this mean? This means that, despite Zelda sending him back in time, despite having never grabbed the Master Sword and been put to sleep for seven years, despite Ganondorf never taking over, Link was still known to be a legendary hero, his journey known by the kingdom. Seemingly INCLUDING his feats in the alternative future. Even in the Child Timeline, Link was known by Hyrule as the Hero of Time whom defeated Ganondorf. Hints of this can even be seen in Twilight Princess, but they're a little less direct. So, in regards to the questions posed around the 8 minute mark, why does the Happy Mask Salesman act as though Link is the only one capable of retrieving the mask? Why does he claim it should be an easy feat for him? Because, like ALL OF HYRULE, he knows who Link is and he knows, at least to some extent, what he did. He doesn't have to be some god or deity to know. As for the other discrepancies, how about some alternative explanations? Why does he need to leave in three days? Because he's a busy man. How can he be a busy man if he remains there doing nothing for three days? Because his business is not in Termina. As shown when you finish the game and return the mask to him, he has elsewhere to be and is just passing through Termina on his way there (or more likely, passing through the Lost Woods but had to side track through Termina after losing the mask). Being a mask salesman, he's likely traveling to set up shop elsewhere, but because Majora's Mask was stolen, he can't leave yet. But he only has 3 days to spare retrieving the mask before he needs to leave because he still hasn't even reached his destination and has a deadline. Why is he doing nothing? Because what would he do? He can't just set up shop suddenly considering how he did his business in OoT, not to mention that he would need a location to set up shop (I don't see any empty shops around Clock Town like he had in Castle Town). And he's not capable of retrieving the mask himself. So what else would he do but wait while Link retrieves the mask for him, hoping he does it in time. And of course he doesn't want to leave without the mask, especially when he knows the power it holds. How does he know the Song of Healing? Lots of characters are shown to know songs with magical powers, why is this one any different? I mean, I get the mystery of how the windmill guy knows the song of storms, but how is this any more of a mystery than how Zelda knows the Song of Time, or how the Composer Brothers composed the Sun's Song and the Song of Storms, capable of changing the time of day or bringing storms, or how Igos du Ikana learned the Elegy of Emptiness? There's so many songs with powers known by characters, the Happy Mask Salesman knowing a song that helps souls move on, with the side effect of creating masks, isn't all that weird. Besides, the fact that he has Majora's Mask is in its own the only reason he should know it. Even being a normal person that found it hidden away, it would make sense (it could have been carved onto a wall where the mask originally rested, for example). While he is mysterious and none of my points outright disprove the theory of him being a god... My point is just that none of those points are really evidence he's a god. Its a theory that has no basis or evidence backing it up, with no way of proving it any more than the theory he's a descendant of the ancient tribe or that he is Majora. But there's no way of disproving it until we're given an actual answer on who he is.
It’s implied Link saved Hyrule by warning Zelda in time of Ganandorf’s plans. And yeah, you could say that people were at least aware of his deeds since the quote implies he was made a legend that was passed down by the royal family (most likely Zelda telling the story), so it would make sense that the mask salesmen might know about and believe the legend. To be honest I think this theory about the mask salesman being a God is quite a reach but I also don’t believe he’s just a normal, completely innocent mask salesman like you presume either. For instance, at the end of the game after you return the mask to him, he just... disappears, like literally out of thin air. Some believe it’s because, like many others, he was also a victim of the mask; that it took his soul (kind of like the deku shrub) and who you talk to in game is either a ghost or the soulless husk of the mask salesman and at the end of the game, him vanishing is suppose to represent his soul being freed and him coming to peace after the mask that killed him has been purified. This is only one theory that may explain it, but I’ve seen other ones, some darker than that. And there’s a lot of other weird things about the salesman that suggest he’s more than just a normal, innocent bystander. The kids on the moon that resemble him is another thing. I don’t think I’ve seen a single theory explaining that to justice though. Also his erratic behavior and his urgency for Link to get the mask back is out of character and not a good enough excuse for him just being a “busy man” who needs to leave in exactly 3 days. The fact that his text plays, “you’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?” If the moon crashes and Link dies after running out of time is also peculiar. You can say a lot of this is coincidence but one things for certain, the mask salesman is still a little creepy whether that was intended or not and the mystery of his character have a lot of people rightfully wondering if his role in the story is more significant than is first presumed.
Remember the picture of Demise and the Demon Lords arrayed behind him, in the intro of Skyward Sword? One of them looks like the Mask Salesman... at least as much as those abstracted ink blots can look like anything. Just like one looks like Ghirahim. Could be that he's an ancient evil playing the long game, willing to actually help in the short term if he deems that it moves pieces for him in the future.
Here's a theory. What if the happy mask salesman is a god like in the video with the fierce deity being his counterpart like Demise and Hylia. But the fierce deity somehow died similar to Demise, That upset the balance in the world. So the happy mask salesman left to find a way to fix it, and ended up needing both skull kid and link to fix it. So he was the mastermind behind all of majora's mask.
I always see the Happy Mask Salesman as Gaunter O'dimm in the dlc of the Witcher 3. An evil identity that can exhause the wishes of people because in Ocarina of Time you deliver the masks to people that wish to posess a certain object or power like the guard of the death mountain for his kid.
The god Theory seems to make the most sense, whenever link is involved in a "Other World." It involves a higher being of some sort. In Link Awaking we encounter the Wind Fish who is a God of the dream world, in Phantom hourglass there is Oshus Who is a Whale deity, similar to the Wind Fish. The story beats are very similar. Link is traveling outside Hyrule -> Link Mysteriously ends up in a new land -> sticks around to defeat the Evil so he may leave.
HG: Ancient tribe "choughs" zonai "coughs" again Me: that was funny then me it possible zonai could have been around and or working with the sheikah or goddess hylia before SS
If the happy mask salesman is a god/immortal, maybe he knows Link is capable because he recognises a connection between him and the Fierce Deity, who he would have also sealed into a mask.
My theory is the Mask Salesman is a sort of time deity. Perhaps even a reincarnation of the Goddess of Time, though that's a bit of a bold claim. Let's back up though, there are several clues indicating that the Mask Salesman has some sort of time-manipulation abilities. First is one of the most obvious: when you talk to him as you would any other normal NPC he says the exact amount of time until the moon will fall. Granted he might just be really good at tracking time, but consider this: time flows almost everywhere in Majora's Mask, even inside buildings, which is very different from Ocarina of Time, where time only flowed in certain locations such as Lake Hylia, Desert Colossus and, most famously for its stalchildren spawning at night, the main area of Hyrule Field. The only places where time doesn't flow is on the Moon and the entire intro of the game up until you leave the Clock Tower. And since the Mask Salesman claims to have followed Link, it would make sense that time wouldn't flow around him if the Mask Salesman is around (the moon, however, is probably more of a coincidence). This would also explain the reasoning behind his knowledge of Link's previous adventure as well as why Link returns to the Clock Tower when the final day ends and the moon falls.
I like the idea of the game being a trail for Link. Kinda reminds me of the Sheikah trails. The reward is freedom from the darkness he felt for not getting credit / being abandoned by his friend and being completely healed and recognized in the form of Fierce Deity. Since the mask holds all of the love and appreciation of the people he helped in Termina.
The real threat in Majora's Mask isn't the moon crashing into the Earth, it's the fact that only Link and Skull Kid wear masks. Everyone else catches corona by the third day.
i think you are onto something! if we go by the logic of the spirit of the hero which is basically "defeat evil and bring peace to the land" its very possible that the goddesses deployed the salesman as a agent to fulfil Link's now erased destiny! but take a moment and instead of seeing him as a god maybe try seeing him as a puppet to a bigger plot, think how the salesman corners Link into the adventure but seems helpless himself, we know this man is pratically a ghost as seen in the ending so what if curse layed on Link's spirit caused the events of majoras mask to begin? regardless if it was the curse of the goddesses 1 thing remains:the fact that the salesman fades away in the end, perhaps he isn't dead but rather this version of him isn't really the same person but rather something using the face of one of the most innocent and trustworthy people in Hyrule to lure Link right into this adventure. its possible the Majora is 1 of the "lesser" evils that demise's curse seem to cause in the same vein of Vaati, Bellum and Malladus, if thats the case its possible the Majora started to act up after it realized Ganondorf wouldn't fulfil his part on the curse until his execution in TP so it attempted to fulfil that by luring the Skull Kid into this, this is gonna sound crazy but what if the THMS we see in MM is created by Majora itself? if we assume Majora is the reverse of the Fierce Deity in terms of how its made (with FD holding all memories and feelings of Termina and all pointing directly into obliterating Majora) then we can assume maybe the tribe's hexing rituals were in fact all of them putting their memories and feelings into the mask and as it passed down people it started to be able to copy and materialize other's memories (such as Hyrule Historia pointing out the Skull Kid's memories were mixed with Majora's to create Termina, of course this could be false but it still a point to think about) so with all this huge info dump i bring in the idea:what if THMS we see in MM is actually Majora's own creation, made specifically to put a halt on the mask's destructive wrath as it knew it would exhaust itself and no longer be able to be sentient, its worth noting the game ends at the 4th day...almost as if the THMS knew the mask's power could only go so long as 3 days until it would either destroy the world around it in a fit of rage or become powerless, it could be why he disappears in the ending...because the power of the mask left it and this version of him no longer needs to exist and soon enough faded away, all he taught to Link, all that knowlodge he had about Link and all the weird things could simply be that the mask had enough omnipotence to know about Link and THMS targeted Link specifically to help him out to get the mask before it was too late basically THMS's identity is that he's a remanant of the real one created and modified by Majora to preserve itself after it started to act up on the behalf of the curse put into the world of Zelda and the entire adventure ended up killing the mask's magic and by extension this version of him, its a weird and compliated theory but i always thought of him in this way because to me it made sense he was an illusion, heck Termina doesn't seem to have a proper contrapart to him which seems weird since its culture revolves around masks
A minor god of masks would make sense for the Zelda universe given the importance of masks throughout the series. Sure in OoT the masks didn't grant any sort of power, but their power wasn't needed as we see several masks repeated that now have a special addition to them. There's also things like Midna wearing the Fused Shadow as a helm (and Zant has his own mask) and having to go through great lengths for the Hero's Mask in Wind Waker. And it's obvious that while we know where the Mask of Truth came from (the Sheika) the usage of masks in different games and lands as a means of power isn't limited to one tribe. Also the question of if Mask Salesman had the power to cut off Majora's power why put Link through all this, I've a feeling that he knows it wouldn't solve anything. It wouldn't get Mikau's children back since they were stolen by the pirates not by Skull Kid. It wouldn't bring peace to the numerous souls already lost before Link's journey like the entire cursed land of Iakana or help the dancers or Darmani. There's even the question of if a curse can be reversed once it's placed or would cutting off the power simply stop anything new from happening but Kafei and the Great Fairy and the four giants still be in suffering? Would the moon really have stopped? And most certainly taking away his toy wouldn't help Skull Kid at all since he'd just be mad and upset and possibly get worse now that even more people are mad at him? Majora may have been a cause in some of the suffering but removing it doesn't undo what happened to these people. There's a lot of healing that can't be fixed with a switch. Link needed to handle these one on one to set things right. From entire kingdoms to a broken home. And he needed some healing too. The theory that the Fierce Deity is merely Link being able to channel ALL of the pain and hopes and joys and fears of Termina, the connection he had to build with these people to truly feel it, in a way gives him a means to regain his old self. Figuratively and literally it's no coincidence that this mask turns him into Adult Link, his real self, the form of the hero he had to wait to become because he just wasn't strong enough as a child. The forgotten hero who'd been returned to a Hyrule where he had no home and few friends and was no longer needed found a purpose and reason to rise again. Ugh I didn't mean for this to turn into an essay but I love this game so muuuch.
I wonder if the salesman could be a descendant of the tribe that made the mask. That would explain why he sought it out. Maybe he’s the last member in the bloodline and wanted to preserve his culture.
To be fair, even without knowing about the upcoming disaster or the time loop, a regular traveling salesman might have also planned to leave after 3 days since that would have been the day of the annual festival that Clock Town was preparing for throughout the game, where he would presumably have been planning to sell his wares before going to his next stop.
Great video! I think there is definitely something un-earthy about the happy mask salesman, especially at the end when he vanishes into thin air. But if he was just testing Link, why would he get so angry with him when he doesn’t return with the mask? 🤔
You are wrong about the song of healing, while it always does involve a mask, there are two cases where it does indeed heal and break curses, with Link (whose example gets overshadowed by the curse using the Deku Butler's son) and the scientist who falls to a Ghibdo curse. Even with the two other transformation masks, the cutscene shows them being healed of all of their emotional trauma and regrets. Even then the assumption that the soul is trapped in the mask is conjecture, it could instead be the suffering of the person it heals, which is why Link screams every time. Personally I theorize the Happy Mask Salesman to be a sheikah considering his purple color scheme, red eyes and having the mask of truth in OoT.
First off, nice video bro! Very well constructed and laid out. The two theories I go back and forth on are that he is a 'God' or that he was part of a lost people who worshiped Majora (I don't recall which TH-camr I saw that Theory from so I apologize for not giving them credit!) I wouldn't though call him a 'God' persay, but more of a deity, I do like the idea that the masks have powers because of him, but I wouldn't say because he, himself, grants the power, but that through his work and experiments he created Masks and the Song of Healing. But I do think that Masks in the Zelda Universe some do inherently have magical properties, like the Fierce Deity and Majoras mask, which would have led him to his research that a soul can exist in a Mask. But that's my input on the matter, I would love to know if anyone agrees or disagrees and hear the counter points! :D
Okay, so you mentioned 3 theories, but I have another. While many masks pospossess powers, many can be innocuous outside their prescribed uses. A big part of masks in OoT, is seeing what reactions you get for each mask. Without a guide or internet, this would be how the Mask Salesman's side quest is carried out. I'd say in Termina, there's 3 kinds of reactions. 1: character is fooled by any mask you wear. 2: character is only fooled by the transformation masks. 3: character is fooled by no mask, seems to understand what you are to your core. The Mask Salesman falls in this third category of people you meet in Majora's Mask, these are either people of great power or great experience. One other point of interest, the Song of Healing performs a very different task when played in the beginning then it does later on. It can even be used to restore sign posts to their proper form. Some people suggest that the Deku mask is also the result of the death of another character, one whose only seen twice, and mentioned once in game. My theory is the Heart of Darkness Majora's Mask had bound itself to the Salesman, he fell victim, and someone saved him with the Song of Healing. His knowledge of the mask, and the song with powers of restoration and healing, come from a singular experience.
Maybe its confirmed that skull kid killed the deku butlers son to turn link into a deku scrub and the corpse of a deku scrub at the start of the game but the power of majora was so strong that it corrupted the salesman and skull kid instantly so I'd doubt he would be able to play the song on something before being takin over
@@Hirabeatz my suggestion is that the Mask Salesman learned the Song of Healing when someone else saved him from Majora's Mask. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" is this game's "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this." By which I mean: ICONIC my mini theory: the majora's mask has these bulging eyes, these eyes remind me of Koume and Kotake (Twinrova) - the two Gerudo (?) withches... MajorA, TwinrovA, both ends with an A, but that probably doesn't mean anything... So, I was thinking: maybe there is some connection to the Gerudo and Ganon(dorf)... That's all I have, really >:D
The fierce deity is nobody’s specific creation. In an interview with eiji aonuma he said “The best I can give you is just a suggestion. The best way to think about it is that the memories of all the people of Termina are inside of the Fierce Deity Mask.” I believe this to mean all the suffering and hopes of the people brought this mask to life and majora is just the easiest way for the game to give it to you. But if your theory is true then it still would be the happy mask salesman’s existence that gives it its awesome power.
To be fair, the design of the FD Link is... specific in a way that seems intentional to me. Even if the mask itself is formed from the people of Termina's memories, I'm not sure if that leaves out the possibility of the transformation being (loosely) based on someone or something. I also don't know if we want to just brush off the Moon Child wearing Majora's Mask being the one who gives it to you as a "gameplay reasons" thing, either. I still thumbed this up though, as it seems that many people either forget this bit of lore or are ignoring it in favor of more edge-I mean different theories of the mask's origins.
@@LonelySpaceDetective the design itself probably played a bigger role in the original concept but the game suffered time restrictions so anything that could have been is unfortunately lost to time
@@broskimoski9775 Fair point I suppose. Though something that makes me pause is that in a couple of pre-release screenshots you can see Link has what seems to be an Adult Link mask on his C buttons. It may've just been a regular Link mask for transforming back into Hylian Link after using another transformation mask, but it's shown as being usable when as normal Link, and Hyrule Historia has some concept art for an MM depiction of Adult Link. This all suggests to me that Fierce Deity Link was a relatively late inclusion, so they probably had a reason to design him the way they did. Though honestly, the reason could have been as simple as "Adult Link wasn't cool enough of a transformation to be a reward for getting every mask".
@@LonelySpaceDetective also including adult link most likely would have been just so you could use items only adult link could previously use, but that’s rather pointless if you just make young link able to use them. But by that point you already have the basic model and function of the mask so why not make something awesome
They have a creation story manga of Majoras Mask written by Akira Himekawa back in 2001 and I highly recommend reading it, it's at the end of the Majoras Mask legendary edition manga and it's really good.
Ok ok ok, you know my whole take on this theory - we talked so much about this character and all the possibilities 😍 you know, I can go on for hours about this, literally, haha.I love this video so so much, just like you 💜
I think it's also just as likely that the powers of the masks comes from the person the masks came from, much like how the champions from BOTW each had a power that came from the depths of their souls that they could give to Link. We know that gratitude in the Zelda series can take a physical form and accomplish miraculous things like making Batreau human, perhaps that's what gives the masks filled with gratitude their unique abilities rather than it being sourced by some god (unless we're suggesting that the salesman is the god of gratitude). It's likely the reason that the song of healing makes masks is because it soothes those who hear it and their gratitude creates the mask much like how people could produces gratitude crystals or force gems in other games. As we can see in the case of Mikau his soul was still around even after he supposedly became a mask meaning it's likely not his soul that was used to make it but rather his gratitude (that's also arguably why the deku transformation only becomes a mask you can put on and off after the song of healing was played). On a different note it's possible that Majora was made from the malice of the ancient tribe or some ancient being long long ago hence why unliek the other masks that only give benefits, Majora possesses a Malevolent will that corrupts it's user. Hatred is a feeling from a person that wishes to enact ill will no matter what so it makes sense that whatever entity Majora originated from is still trying to inact it's will through the mask, the last remanents of it's feelings left behind. Fierce Deity acts as it's counterpart because it represents the Good will of everyone you helped in terminal, their powers combined attempting to do good by protecting the land from evil.
It was so weird how the Happy Mask Salesman knew so much about the mask and it's origin and just suddenly vanished at the end of the game right after he got the mask back. I think the Happy Mask Salesman is one of the people from the tribe that created Majora's Mask. Hell, he could actual be one of Majora's Mask's creators and kept his real identity secret to make sure things didn't become more complicated and dangerous.
He could be in fact, perhaps using perception, such as pretending to be a mask salesman/enthusiasist in order to obtain masks. I propose that he might not even be a mask salesman at all. Just using it as a pretense to get masks to bless powers onto maybe. Hiding his true evil nature. Waiting until the time is right to strike. He knows the song of healing. I feel like majora and the fierce diety were likely turned into masks at some point using the song of healing as well. Likely during a large scale battle that went terribly wrong or something. The moon itself is interesting, and it seems like majora is projecting his illustrations inside of the moon. Every kid running around the lone tree, looks like the happy mask salesman, perhaps symbolizing and personifying majora's relationship to the happy mask salesman. The inside of the moon seems like an illusion, but it might not be at the same time. It could be very real.
I agree that he's likely a god or has some sort of god powers himself. Like have you ever noticed the resemblance between him and the children inside the moon?
I personally think the Happy Mask Salesman is just a guy who has come across some powerful things in his travels. He might have gained some powers over time such as foresight or time travel as seen in his knowledge and his jerkyness in cutscenes. He seems a bit insane, possibly die to all the things he's seen.
This is just a thought based on the fierce deity mask being the Terminian counterpart to Link but if the mask salesman does grant power to masks, what if he created the fierce deity mask based off the Link of Termina to counter the power of Majora? It might explain why he knows about Link and why he knows Link is capable of regaining the mask since he knows about the Terminian Link. This is just an idea since I still haven’t completed Majora’s mask and am about to do so in my first play through after I completed the Anju and Kafei side quest (the best one in gaming imo)

Great video dude. I'm new to the channel, and I have to say, it feels great to hear a Scottish accent talking about my favourite game. May the Goddess smile upon you.
Good video! But i have another theory, what if the Happy Salesman was actually an representation of Shigeru Miamoto in the zelda series, that is why he is so similar to Shigeru and why he has a mask of Mario, but he is like a god like the first theory that you mentined, that is not impossible because that already happened in another medias like in marvrl's comics there is a god called The One Above All, he is a represemtation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And that would explain why he knows everything about Link and the masks. And i'm sorry if i misspelled some words english is not my primary languge.
I like to think that the mask salesman is actually an omnipotent being. not like a god though. His design was based on miyamoto, right? so what if he was like a representation of him/the zelda community who knows much more than anyone in lore would know? This would also explain why he can seem to appear anywhere and still knows what is going on (in termina and hyrule).
Personally, I think the Mask Man actually is Majora. Even in the remakes, the kids on the moon are exactly like him with his real name never revealed to Link. He has the power to trap emotions to a mask and already knew he had to leave Termina in 3 days time. I really believe he's Majora
@@yba_xoxo lmao. HG did say there are some vids that will come soon in a community post, so I’m hyped! I proposed a theory and I wonder if it’ll get in a video 🤔
The second theory was a theory I initially had about the mask salesmen. Your conclusions would seems different from mine, which based of the ending of the game: Termina was a lesson for The Hero of Time, a lesson about moving on; a lesson about time and friendships; a lesson that even if a departure is permanent or temporary the only thing that matters is how that person touched the lives of others there. The happy masks salesmen was that teacher and Tatl was the person that he was talking to though, but it also applied to Link and Navi: the reason that Majora's Mask took place. So we think that Link continued his search for Navi, but after finishing the game, I concluded that too at first; however, I later reflected on the end of MM, and realized that Link actually was ride back to find the exit, Hylia and The Goddess of Time created the world; however, if that's the case then they created the Lost Woods teleportation ability and removed it during that time of the child time-line so The Hero of Time could have a child that would allow The Hero's descendent, Link, to take over in the battle against Gannon in his place: a biological relation is slightly stronger than a spiritual relation, a combination of the two is purely powerful. the happy mask salesman might be a fractional God of Time, blessed by the God of Time.
If the HMS was a god, I believe he would be the god of identities. Believing we are all empty shells that can be filled with whatever personality traits that we encounter, this makes more sense. He allows Link to change his identity by wearing the masks he sells. He's either the god of identities or he's a collector of relics.
Not necessarily. We don't know the details of the timeline there, namely the time between Link going to sleep and Ganondorf taking over or the time between Link preventing Ganondorf's attack and his encounter with the Skull Kid. Depending on these timings, its possible that instead, Ganondorf ended up killing the Happy Mask Salesman and/or Skull Kid before Skull Kid could take the mask and become controlled by Majora
Maybe mask sales man is the physical manifestation of his idea, since if we count majoras mask as a dream in links head,he basically knows everything about link like his adventures and etc dispute not being there or having a spy ,it's like when one of your emotions/thoughts manifests itself as a person you have met with, that's my idea at least

The Happy Mask Salesman is...Majora. The mask is "Majora's Mask". As in, it _belongs_ to Majora. - Who owned the mask before it was stolen from him? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who "found" the mask after it had been tainted by tribe(s) unknown and made evil? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who do the children on the moon look like under their masks - the ones who will grant Link the Fierce Deity Mask? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who does the 5th kid on the moon look like under his/Majora's Mask? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who knows stuff about Link that never happened in that reality? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who is the only character with purposefully jerky animations as though his body impossibly teleports from one pose to the next? The Happy Mask Salesman. - Who teaches Link a clearly magical song he shouldn't by any right know? The Happy Mask Salesman. - How long as the Happy Mask Salesman been following Link at the beginning of the game? Since Hyrule Castle Town? Since Hyrule Field? Since The Lost Woods? Since falling into Termina? Since he entered the interior of the Clock Tower base? - Is he the "Happy Mask Salesman"? - The "Happy Mask" Salesman? - The "Happy" Mask Salesman? - Why do the kids on the moon look like the Happy Mask Salesman? The scene shown is of a singular tree on a plain green hill - typically in Japanese media this is an allusion to being within an illusion of ones mind or soul - Link is not so much within the Moon as he is within the mind/soul OF the moon. Meaning that the Moon is an aspect of Majora. The Moon is the Happy Mask Salesman. The Happy Mask Salesman is The Moon. The Happy Mask Salesman is Majora...AND the "Fierce Deity", the mask created by The Moon/The Happy Mask Salesman/Majora to be his opponent...his rival...the "bad guy". I think Hyrule Gamer is dead-on that the Happy Mask Salesman is a Deity. And that Deity's name is Majora. And he is also the Fierce Deity, whose power Link borrows to cleanse his mask.
Ya know what’s interesting, there is someone very similar to the Happy Mask Salesman. In Phantom Hourglass there is a ship that’s located to the east. He is named the “ The man of Smiles.” My personal Theory is that he might be the happy mask salesman but in a different form and world, he may not recognize Link but there are possibilities that he may know who he is. But judging how confusing the Legend of Zelda timeline is, who knows.
It's the same in the Oracle games where a mask salesman like person is a primary side character zelda has parallel characters and references but they never reference majoras mask besides small Easter eggs so it must mean something...
One thing I absolutely love about this game is how everyone has a different interpretation about basically everything. Most of all the atmosphere. Some people think this game is creepy but some think it’s hyper and basically most things you could describe a game’s atmosphere as and it would still fit this game. Even after 20 years we still have different interpretations. Absolutely brilliant.
I always assumed that he is able to preform some sort of dark magic/witch craft in order to give those mask their abilities or that he was secretly working with ganon
I always thought that the Happy Mask Salesman was a Sheikah in disguise, as we have seen people can switch in and out of a Sheikah look (Zelda/Shiek). I always saw him as a very mysterious guide who does his own trial (selling masks/ BotW shirne type of quest) for the hero of time with the goal of gifting him the Mask of Truth, which in return reveal the rest of the secrets from the gossip stones created by the shiekah. That was my theory for his OOT appearance. Now, on this Majora's Mask appearance, I truly loved your last theory that we was setting up another trial for the hero of time now that his main quest is over. He probably knows the Fierce Diety, Majora's Mask and the Goddess of time are probably a parallel of the golden trio (Link, Ganon, Zelda) within Termina's dimension. I also thought that this Trial was the way Link earned the power to leave the lost woods, as all kids who get lost in the lost woods end up as a skull kid; therefore, for me, Majora's Mask is an allegory where Link fights the Skull Kid from OOT, as a reflection of what he could become if he continues to focus in the past (Navi and his lost childhood) instead of focusing in his present and future role (Twilight Princess Cameo)
Another key mystery to the HMS is that, he does not question how Link gets back his Ocarina so fast. The 3 day cycle does not activate until Link walks through the door and when he resets time, Link is again, at the door. So from the HMS' percpective, Link just walked out the door and comes back with the Ocarina in mere moments, and he also assumes Link has the Majoras Mask as well. The HMS MUST know about the time traveling.
TBH I think that the Happy Mask Salesman is a divine entity of happiness, and Majora represents rage and hatred. Everything connected to Majora is to do with anger and rage while the Mask Salesman is seemingly obsessed with joy and happiness.
While it may not be accurate and easily disprovable, I for one always had the headcanon that the Mask Salesman was actually Majora itself, or at the very least the being whom the Mask was named after. If I may delve into fanfic territory here, I imagine that the Salesman/Majora was a powerful being within the Mysterious Tribe's society, possibly viewed as a god. However, this 'god' was not like the others in Zelda's Lore, being more malevolent and mischievous than the benevolent gods of Hyrule. (perhaps even being akin to the demon Ghirahim) Eventually, a tribesman wielding a powerful double-helix sword attempted to get rid of Majora, ultimately sealing the false god's power within the Mask itself and leaving Majora itself as a powerless being. (Perhaps that cool double-helix sword could have split Majora and its power in two.) This hero would become known to the tribe as the Fierce Deity, and after his passing his soul would be immortalized via a Song of Healing that had been written during Majora's reign. However, despite this victory the tribe would eventually fall to the power of Majora's Wrath. Over time, the Mask was given sentience thanks to the combined power of hexing rituals and the evil sealed within. The dark powers housed within the mask drove it to vile deeds surpassing even the evils of its origin, as the Mask held only desires of pure destruction. Majora himself had by this point fled from the realm of the Tribe, presumably Ancient Termina, and started anew in Hyrule eventually becoming the Salesman. (This being because Majora had essentially been reduced to an unaging mortal by the Deity, thus making him unfit to retake the sheer unrelenting amount of sentient malice that was Majora's Mask.) Eventually the Mask, using a poor victim as a host-body, ended up discovering a path to Hyrule, and would be stopped in its tracks by something, presumably either an unknown version of Link from after Skyward Sword, the Sheikah Tribe, or maybe even one of the first incarnations of Demise's hatred (threatened by the sudden appearance of another, independent Face of Evil.) For this scenario, we will go with the Sheikah option, as it seems to line up the most. So, if the Sheikah got a hold of the Mask, they would soon realize it's dark potential and want to seal it away. Thus they would seal it in a place where it's darkness would be shrouded from any who wish to detect it: the Shadow Temple (or rather, the dungeon that would eventually be known as the Shadow Temple.) Thus, the tale of Majora's Mask had ended, the power of a false god sealed within a mask of darkness, now hidden by the Malice of Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred. Or so it seemed... Eventually, Majora heard rumors of his Mask's fate, searching far and wide for the temple but ultimately unable to venture inside. Until one fateful day, when a certain Gerudo King enacted his plan to obtain the Triforce... Using the Gerudo King's plan as a distraction, Majora sneaked into the Shadow Temple and acquired his mask, now dormant after multiple centuries (if not millennia) without a host. Knowing far too well of the Mask's independent evil, Majora decides to not put on his mask when he gets it back, as the sentience may lead to the malice overwhelming his mortal form. Thus, Majora tucks it between his mask collections, and leaves for Termina (possibly intending to find a way to fully transfer his power back to him without allowing the Mask to cause issue). This plan would never come to fruition, as the Mask would wake from its slumber. Realizing that it would perish without the malice that fuels it, the Mask manipulates a certain Skull Kid into attacking Majora and taking the Mask away from it's original source. And thus the events of Majora's Mask begin. Using what little magic he still had in Termina, Majora (now posing as a "Happy Mask Salesman") used his powers to aid Link, healing him of the Deku Curse and resetting time to their first meeting in the clock tower should he fail. At the end of the story, when Link unknowingly returns the Mask to its source, the Malice and Evil that powered the Mask had been destroyed. This was a major blow to Majora, as he would never reacquire his power of yore; and yet it was a victory as well. The demon that birthed from his sealed power had been vanquished, leaving him with no known threats of his past left alive. Majora could start regaining power anew, without worrying that someone could discover his past and stop him, or worse that someone would take his former power for themself. Thus, Majora leaves the 'hero' of Termina, now set to grow his power and bide his time till the right opportunity finally strikes for him to regain his control over the mortals.

I like the creepiness of the game also how short it is I like it, easy to replay the game.
Twin towers boss fight
Creepy as always
he can also read your memory card content and comment on it... oh, wait, wrong game, oops, my bad, sorry
Healing regrets would also mean Link's desire and regret wanting to be recognized as a hero became the Fierce Deity.
@@ThePsychicPsycho_uZ That's actually a really cool idea!
@@ThePsychicPsycho_uZ Wow, it surprisingly makes sense...
The implication of Link stopping Ganondorf in the past is that he was able to warn Zelda on time, that's why the game ends on them meeting, apparently for the first time for Zelda.
The events being linked to the masks and, therefore, allowing them to happen outside the loop, does make a lot of sense.
The identity of the Happy Mask Salesman is nearly as mysterious as the disappearance of the fairy that lead us to Termina.

What about Astor? The “seer”
He didn't even mention the creepiest and weirdest parts.
A. He shows absolutely no surprise that link literally just walked out the door, then back in with his ocarina, and what's more, expects the mask too! he clearly knows that link can time travel, and is aware of it.
B. If you get a game over from the moon, you hear him laugh, and say "You've met with a terrible fate haven't you"
You get a weird slow camera wobble and you are back in the clock tower with him. not outside.
THAT is a little bit weird? did he rewind time himself to save us or what?
Also, the Happy Mask Saleman moves poses without flowing through the motion, and makes an organ appear out of Nowhere. It is almost like he is out of sync with Termina's 3d reality.
Maybe termina is a dimension created by mask salesman, thats explains why people in hyrule and termina are basically the same..

So like a con man?
Notice when the mask salesman says the evil left the mask, he almost sounds disappointed. I think he stole the mask possibly wanting to dominate Termina.
Everyone thinks he's evil. I feel that's too cliche. He may have been disappointed or maybe just sentelmental.
I feel the more likely theory is that he was one of the members of the ancient tribe who originally used the mask for hexing rituals.
Maybe he holds regret and as one of the last members of his tribe vowed to keep the mask safe. So that it never is used for evil again.

Haha, same.
My mom saw Link screaming with the mask, and my mom said “Nope!”
I didn’t get to finish playing it till Majora’s Mask 3D.
Aw yes your zelda theory that you put tons of thinking into and then gets lost in a sea of youtube comments. Well take my thumbs up.
Take my thumbs up as well. I have never heard this theory before but it is excellent. I'll never look at the happy mask salesman the same way again. When I finished reading your comment the X files theme popped into my head.
I recall reading that Miyamoto acts passive aggressive with a fake smile to his developers. lol

He said that the mask was used by a tribe and that it was sealed away so my question is how did he get his hands on that mask and what was he planning to do with it because it didn't seem like he was happy when the evil spirit left the mask so I wonder what was a mask salesman planning to do with a cursed item like majora's mask

The moonchildren looking like.him adds something to this.......
I was waithing for that to be mentioned... but it wasn't! DISAPPOINTED!
@@ArinJager1 It is also wierd, that the moon itself, just seems like an illusion or something. Like it is not real.
I think he's just an extremely wise person. He's really intelligent and knows what powers the mask has.
Me too. I think he's a guy who has come across some powerful things in his travels. He might have some powers over time such as foresight or time travel due to his knowledge and his jerkyness in cutscenes. He seems a bit insane, possibly die to all the things he's seen.
Could be the case :)
But then how does he know that Link is capable of bringing him the mask? Being wise=/=Being omniscient.
I dunno he dodnt even know any real things about majora beside legend and him being smart doesn't correlate to all the info he knows
Perhaps!

The happy mask salesman is just Link’s stalker. Another one who fell for that pretty, pretty face of his.
His deku scrub face

Oh maybe maybe!
like your theory!
Perfect timing I was just checking for a new video on the Zelda series to get me in that Nintendo vibe for my sketching
Edit mid-sketch: I agree with the God theory, and for my reasoning I’d like to point out the Horned statue and Malanya being referred to by themselves and others as Gods and I find it completely plausible that the Mask Salesman could be in that same vague class of “lesser gods” if that makes any sense

Hylia herself is technically a lesser god compared to the three golden goddesses, so it makes a lot of sense.

He cant be a normal hylian or terminain cause he knows about the deal made with Link 3 days before. The clock tower is strange as time does not pass there. but even if both conversation happen frozen in time there cant be two conversations happening at once at 5:59 am.
🤔

I wouldn't mind an hour long episode to be honest. In fact, I'd LOVE an hour long episode of just majora's mask theories
Maybe he ended up becoming the cursed statue in botw
Agreed
@@qunt100 MatPat what are you doing here?

I feel like the happy mask salesman is either an evil cult god, or a nice god. But a god nontheless. He has to be one of the two.
One HUGE flaw with this theory, a flaw that disproves a lot of theories about this game that just about everyone seems to forget:
LINK DID STILL SAVE HYRULE FROM GANONDORF.
"A boy who, after battling evil and saving Hyrule...", "Done with the battles he once waged across time"
So what does this mean?
To rebute your Hero's Shade bit
It is actually confirmed that Hero's Shade is OOT Link.
Are you disputing the proven fact that the heros shade is OOT link? Lol
HG: Ancient tribe "choughs" zonai "coughs" again
Me: that was funny then me it possible zonai could have been around and or working with the sheikah or goddess hylia before SS
Huh
Lol
God that Engrish broke me.
I figured it out! The happy mask salesman is actually.......Tingles step-dad.
LAFMO 😂😆☠️
YES
I like the idea of the game being a trail for Link. Kinda reminds me of the Sheikah trails. The reward is freedom from the darkness he felt for not getting credit / being abandoned by his friend and being completely healed and recognized in the form of Fierce Deity. Since the mask holds all of the love and appreciation of the people he helped in Termina.
Honestly the Happy Mask Salesman always scared me-

The real threat in Majora's Mask isn't the moon crashing into the Earth, it's the fact that only Link and Skull Kid wear masks. Everyone else catches corona by the third day.
Lol elegant joke
i think you are onto something! if we go by the logic of the spirit of the hero which is basically "defeat evil and bring peace to the land" its very possible that the goddesses deployed the salesman as a agent to fulfil Link's now erased destiny! but take a moment and instead of seeing him as a god maybe try seeing him as a puppet to a bigger plot, think how the salesman corners Link into the adventure but seems helpless himself, we know this man is pratically a ghost as seen in the ending so what if curse layed on Link's spirit caused the events of majoras mask to begin? regardless if it was the curse of the goddesses 1 thing remains:the fact that the salesman fades away in the end, perhaps he isn't dead but rather this version of him isn't really the same person but rather something using the face of one of the most innocent and trustworthy people in Hyrule to lure Link right into this adventure.
its possible the Majora is 1 of the "lesser" evils that demise's curse seem to cause in the same vein of Vaati, Bellum and Malladus, if thats the case its possible the Majora started to act up after it realized Ganondorf wouldn't fulfil his part on the curse until his execution in TP so it attempted to fulfil that by luring the Skull Kid into this, this is gonna sound crazy but what if the THMS we see in MM is created by Majora itself? if we assume Majora is the reverse of the Fierce Deity in terms of how its made (with FD holding all memories and feelings of Termina and all pointing directly into obliterating Majora) then we can assume maybe the tribe's hexing rituals were in fact all of them putting their memories and feelings into the mask and as it passed down people it started to be able to copy and materialize other's memories (such as Hyrule Historia pointing out the Skull Kid's memories were mixed with Majora's to create Termina, of course this could be false but it still a point to think about)
so with all this huge info dump i bring in the idea:what if THMS we see in MM is actually Majora's own creation, made specifically to put a halt on the mask's destructive wrath as it knew it would exhaust itself and no longer be able to be sentient, its worth noting the game ends at the 4th day...almost as if the THMS knew the mask's power could only go so long as 3 days until it would either destroy the world around it in a fit of rage or become powerless, it could be why he disappears in the ending...because the power of the mask left it and this version of him no longer needs to exist and soon enough faded away, all he taught to Link, all that knowlodge he had about Link and all the weird things could simply be that the mask had enough omnipotence to know about Link and THMS targeted Link specifically to help him out to get the mask before it was too late
basically THMS's identity is that he's a remanant of the real one created and modified by Majora to preserve itself after it started to act up on the behalf of the curse put into the world of Zelda and the entire adventure ended up killing the mask's magic and by extension this version of him, its a weird and compliated theory but i always thought of him in this way because to me it made sense he was an illusion, heck Termina doesn't seem to have a proper contrapart to him which seems weird since its culture revolves around masks

hi merlin!
🤟
Wassup Merlin!!
Hey that's me!
Thank you :)
This could also explain the Moon Children considering they all look like him.

The Happy Mask Salesman is the devil at the crossroads.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" is this game's "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this." By which I mean: ICONIC
my mini theory: the majora's mask has these bulging eyes, these eyes remind me of Koume and Kotake (Twinrova) - the two Gerudo (?) withches...
Ok ok ok, you know my whole take on this theory - we talked so much about this character and all the possibilities 😍 you know, I can go on for hours about this, literally, haha.I love this video so so much, just like you 💜
Oh yes dear, I KNOW your take on this and honestly can't wait to talk more on it haha! Thank you so much and thanks for the help, LOVE YOU! 💜
Awwwwwww.
Fair enough
This is just a thought based on the fierce deity mask being the Terminian counterpart to Link but if the mask salesman does grant power to masks, what if he created the fierce deity mask based off the Link of Termina to counter the power of Majora? It might explain why he knows about Link and why he knows Link is capable of regaining the mask since he knows about the Terminian Link. This is just an idea since I still haven’t completed Majora’s mask and am about to do so in my first play through after I completed the Anju and Kafei side quest (the best one in gaming imo)
What about the moon children could the happy masked salesman be one of theme.
Oooh true true, maybe!

I just commented the same thing without realizing, oops! I really think that it is possible for him to be a representation of miyamoto
I like the idea of him being an Indian Jones type, but he knows too much, like Tom Bombadil, so he's probably an angel at the very least.

What if the happy mask salesman is reincarnated like Link and Zelda? He could be reincarnated into kilton in botw.
Possibly and there is a Oracle character that Is the same and a another character...
If the HMS was a god, I believe he would be the god of identities. Believing we are all empty shells that can be filled with whatever personality traits that we encounter, this makes more sense. He allows Link to change his identity by wearing the masks he sells. He's either the god of identities or he's a collector of relics.
I just realized when link slept for 7 years mask man went to termina and termina was destroyed.
Damn

Hey, look who’s back! Great upload.
Thanks :)
Yeah, I agree Hamster. Good vid HG!
I always assumed that he is able to preform some sort of dark magic/witch craft in order to give those mask their abilities or that he was secretly working with ganon
Me, every time you say "you lovely human": ... how do YOU know I'm human? -.-
Haha fair enough Kat 🤔🤣
@@HyruleGamer Lol he speaks truth. Don't be alienist (if that's even a thing)😆
@@jacobh6239 speciesist. Or Xenophobic, I suppose.
I’ve been wondering about this... also like the longer video
Hope you enjoy!
@@HyruleGamer I did thank you! Very interesting
Hey burdbrane it’s me Expired Soup
@@atgu_19 hello there
THEORY: The Happy Mask salesman used the "Song of Healing" on Mario, and THAT'S why he has a Mario mask! :O
4 mins in and realises that I am here within the first five mins of the vid being released... Huh, that's new...
Nice one!
Yes in the begginig he says he has to go in three days the exact amount when time would reset he must have knew about the ocarina
Oh no! he missed the opportunity to make a lord of the rings reference.
Oh!?
Indiana Jones, star wars, majoras mask is basically the one ring
TBH I think that the Happy Mask Salesman is a divine entity of happiness, and Majora represents rage and hatred. Everything connected to Majora is to do with anger and rage while the Mask Salesman is seemingly obsessed with joy and happiness.
We all know his real identity is Frank Sahwit.
I honestly think its Fred Fuchs
Thus they would seal it in a place where it's darkness would be shrouded from any who wish to detect it: the Shadow Temple (or rather, the dungeon that would eventually be known as the Shadow Temple.)
Thus, the tale of Majora's Mask had ended, the power of a false god sealed within a mask of darkness, now hidden by the Malice of Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred.
Gotta re-read this later but I do like the idea of he himself being Majora :)
The revenge of the masked god... to be continued in botw2 🤣🤣🤣
Huh haha
Maybe the cursed statue of hateno village is the happy mask salesman?👀 JK, JK.
