    Thanks for the video! I have an Nema 17 hooked up to a L298n and an Arduino. I have no issues operating it, but I'm having problems powering it. If I use a 5v 1a supply, it works but torque is low. If I use a 12v 2a supply, the torque is great, but the L298n pulses ever second or so which sends power to the motor. It doesnt appear to actually turn the motor, but it makes a buzzing noise which is VERY annoying. Do you know why I'm getting this pulsing from the driver?

    I am an octogenarian and have recently started to learn to write Arduino software. My hobby is making electromagnetic clocks which I design myself. What I trying to find out is if it is possible to use Arduino as an alternative to Mach 3(Wizard) because I have put a couple of steppers onto a small metal lathe and need some software to drive them. It is not something I have done before. I got close to getting Wizard to run but my parallel port computer died and getting Mach 3 to run from a USB is possible but more complicated.

    What is the reason for connecting the ground to both the power supply ground and the Arduino ground. Isn’t ground just ground? Isn’t it risky to send a say 6V power circuit back to the Arduino ground? Sorry for questions, I am still only learning.

    • @robojax
      @robojax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is a good question. we have circuit. electronics go (by convention) from + terminal to - terminal. if we use 1 wire, electrons can't complete the circuit. if we have just signal wires to Arduino, the circuit is not completed and it wont' work. it is the same if we san connect 1 wire (the positive wire ) from battery to a bulb and expect it to work.

      the voltage doesn't matter as you can go up to 24V. But the current is determined by your motor. if you motor need 0.1A then just a little higher or if your motor is 2A then have 2.5A power. So it depends on your motor.

    • @robojax
      @robojax  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      that number has on meaning unless you get the datasheet, see the voltage and current requirement of the motor. For example in this datasheet www.cui.com/product/resource/nema23-amt112s.pdf you will see this item has multiple models and model NEMA23-17-15PD-AMT112S has phase current of 4.2A and operating voltage of 5V. so you pick a motor driver that can handle that current. you will search for "stepper motor driver 10A 5V" or "stepper motor 8A 5V" you must select current 20% or higher than the required current.

      yes. that is what I said. Watch them and learn it. You can do it . watch both videos. here are my stepper related videos th-cam.com/channels/kcBSig_Iu4ZnAIeCeG1TVg.htmlsearch?query=stepper

    • @robojax
      @robojax  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to work. 1000s of people used it and it worked. Your wiring must be wrong. You have put your wiring in correct way. Do you hear any sound from motor? Have you supplied external power to the motor? Arduino can't run this motor.

      if the current exceeds 2A, then you need to have extra heat sink. otherwise this should be good. By the way it shows you have not subscribed. Spare a subscribe click. I have spend over 5 hours on this project. You need to spend 5 seconds to click on "Subscribe"

    // for your motor
    // initialize the stepper library on pins 8 through 11:
    Stepper myStepper(stepsPerRevolution, 8, 9, 10, 11);
    void setup() {

      either over loaded or when it stops it consumes. There are two types motor stop. hold and brake. look at other videos for stepper on my channel. here is how to Find Specific TH-cam Video in a channel bit.ly/findTH-camVideo

    Hi Ahmad ! I own the same kind of L298N board but mine has jumper connecting EN pins (to idk what). I am not sure what is the diagram of this setup so i cant described more than this :/ My question is, do you think in my case, it is a necessity to connect the EN1 and EN2 to arduino the way you did it, and if not, is the 5V GND wire from the L298N to the arduino still necessary ?
