This is a wonderful book. Sad that people never change and this 2000 year old book about war is still so relevant. I suspect it always will be. Great video!

If only warfare itself could become ancient history.

Really enjoyed reading it with you and Mark! Great review as always. Thucydides is definitely different with Herodotus. I agree that Herodotus is a more fun read, but I appreciate what Thucydides did and tried to be as an accurate as possible - as well as the political theory and analysis. Looks forward to more buddy reads, but let’s hope a war doesn’t break out next time. 😉

This is an outstanding volume!! I’ve had it for close to a decade and love the resources the Landmark edition provides. Thanks for sharing!

I'm just finishing The White Ship by Charles Spencer and reading about the reoccurring land grabs. I've been thinking about how we have a stunning capacity to refuse to learn from history. Different subject...nice sword! I particularly like the cross guard. Beautiful form and the detail has a precise contemporary feel.

Thank you! The sword is a replica of a Greek Xiphos.

I remember when the first Gulf War started in 1991, the BBC broadcast an evening with actors reading extracts from the Peleponnesian War. It was very moving, and also pointed to the futility of what was about to happen.

That’s a very poignant memory. Thank you for sharing.

I have just got a copy of this book. I an so glad I did. Your video was very lucid and made me want to get on with reading my copy. Thanks for the additional reading suggestions you made in the video. That is most useful.

Great review. I've always wanted to read it. I've read The Peloponnesian War by Donald Kagan, which I liked. Creepy oligarchs! Then again it is a greek word !!

I have Kagan’s book but I still need to read it. Thanks for watching!

How about the reading experience between the hardback and softcover?

I only have the softcover, but it held up well to reading.

That's an interesting sword. Can you say where you purchased it or what company made it? Thanks.

It’s the Greek Xiphos from Devil’s Edge. It can be purchased pretty cheap from Kult of Athena.
