I love this book! I read it with Jack the RR last year. There’s something for everyone. I missed Herodotus when I finished it. My favourite story was the wife who needed to see if her long haired husband had ears. Read the book to find out why! Thanks, Deb

I've never heard of Herodotus, so I really appreciate this video for educating me about him. Historians do such important work and I'm glad he was able to document all that fascinating stuff. Without him, who knows how much of that would have been lost to time.

It's so funny you share that copy. I bought this exact copy about a week ago for my Ancient Greek history class for fall semester. I'm so excited to finally read him, since I've heard him mentioned quite a bit when learning about ancient history! I also just bought the same edition of Thucydides as well.

Herodotus always seemed like a guy that presented with new facts.....his mind could be changed. Which I liked.
Whereas Thucydides seemed like a person that thought he was so smart that nothing could change his mind.
Reminds me of a lot of people I know. IMO.
Very Nice, and Interesting Video 👍😁👍

    Superb. Added to the list.
I did just hear about a website by a Spartan casual historian who is trying to change the perceptions of what Sparta is remembered as: Sparta reconsidered. Did not have time to get into it much but you may enjoy.

At 3:00 The word "barbarian" in Herodotus Histories from the Greek language is actually incorrect, Herodotus uses this word for a lot of people, a more correct word would be "foreigners", even Tom Holland who translated the penguin classics for Herodotus Histories said he used the word "barbarian" because he wanted to make a distinct difference between Greek/Hellenic culture and The Achaemenid Persian Empire but this really shows he has a lot of bias in his own translation and pushes his own agenda, and it seems a lot of other have translations have copped him like Herodotus Landmark the one you reviewed in this video.

Herodotus is wonderful, although his style takes some getting used to, as it is very disorganized and he has many, many long digressions. He's best described as a Storyteller and Traveller

Hugely interesting video. You've made a compelling case again, I'm on board and want to buy it. There's just one problem - Australian book prices !!! 😥😥😥 I bet Herodotus doesnt mention the Australian book gods. But a serious question. I have struggled with the Illiad (poetry !! - why??😴 ). Please tell me this isnt written like that. I expect the writing will reflect the time it was written, but from what I could see of the pages it looks like it's written in a more conventional style. I hope so.

Whose translation is this? Rawlinson? With some clever editorial comments added? Or is this a new translation, backed by recent research? Most texts are simply the Rawlinson translation with some nifty maps thrown in; but without the notes and essays of the original Rawlinson edition (1885).
Unless this is a definite improvement of that edition, i will pass on this.
