This is great. The stitched image really illustrates the point.

4:20 thank you for mentioning tracking with peripherals. I think getting players to use their peripheral vision to track the puck on their stick is significantly under taught.

Absolutely love this! Perfect timing as today’s focus for u8’s was eyes up!
This morning I was asking my son u8: what does he see when he picks up the puck off a dump in (after a shoulder check(s)The nearest opponent or the whole ice of players? He said he sees the whole although I like his confidence...I think he sees the first layer very well. But this video...I love the picture and it’s explanation! Spot on!!

Thanks Nick, glad you enjoyed the video. Have you trued setting up a drill to force your players to read second layer options? I'm interested in learning about what others are doing in regards to deliberate visual tasking within drills/practices, so please share if you have some tools, thanks!

Timely topic Mike. I've got our Peewee team doing 10 minutes of stick-handling practice at home every night. 5 minutes of this is specific to keeping your head (chin) up. Kids get a point for doing it with a plan to give out prizes every month. We're just coming up the first month I can already see the difference between those working on this skill ... and those that don't. At practice yesterday, a theme running through every drill was keeping one's head up. For stick-handling, rather than fully horizontal, we start them with a target (like a puck) maybe 8' in front. The plan is to move this further and further out as they develop comfort.

I’m in my third year of playing hockey and just made JV. I’m a 5’ 7” defenseman. Any advice on how not to get destroyed when I’m going into a battle along the boards?

Hey Alex, check out the video "races and retrievals", there is a technique that needs to be deliberately learned and practiced when racing to pucks against the wall. If you could find a way to get a video example of your problem to me I could break it down, what position do you play, what zone/area is this happening and what is the situation?
